Subject: OT: Movies about University

  Posted by: Hershy - [31635315] Thu, Feb 07, 2002, 17:51

Hello. First off I want to thank all those who answered my OT: Anti-Police Songs thread.

My next 'anti-media' assignment concerns how univeristy life is portrayed in movies.

Can anyone name University movies in which the participants are portrayed in a bad/unlikely manner? Can you name a movie in which university life is portrayed in a somewhat truthful manner?

I'll skip the obvious "bad" depiction, suffice to say "roadtrip!!!"

As for a truthful movie about preppies, where the hell is Dean Wormer, anyway?

2 of the best I can think of (not including Animal House, which is now somewhat behind the times, even though it's still hilarious):

1) Dead Man on Campus. It's a really funny movie, deals with basically blowing off school for beer, drugs, and women. My kind of movie.

2) PCU. I know it was already mentioned, but this is one of the best college movies ever made. Also about blowing off school. Deals with "intellectual climates" (at least that's what it was called a Carolina, referring to people's diversity concerns and interest in school-related matters, rather than drinking and drug-related "fun" stuff).

University movies with people in a good light.

The best I got is "With Honours" Brendan Frasier, Joe Pesci, I believe Wynonna Rider before she was a shoplifter....

Somewhat believable. Sure, he lets a bum live with him to get his thesis back, which, some would do...the living quarters part is true- not a ton of room, living in a van, no chance of getting time in the bathroom.....

Thats as good as I get.

But for me, Dead Man on Campus...

Academic Probation- not good times....bad times.

PCU was good.
My band played a few shows while calling ourselves "The Merkins" (dude...don't be THAT guy) in ode to this one guy that came to most of our shows wearing our t-shirt (at least he could have bought the latest one!).

Son-in-Law is one of my all time favorites. Starring a young Carla Gugino. Pauly Shore is one of the most misunderstood modern day geniuses!

Not only pauly shore, but Tiffani Amber-Thiesen's big role was also nearly oscar-worthy...

How about the one with Rodney Dangerfield as a freshman. No, it wasn't "The Stupids." Can't remember the name.

And then there's always Love Story. Pretty lame, with hockey and morbidity thrown in for dramatic effect.

Koo-Koo-Ka-Choo.

'Higher Learning' is one of my favorites. It deals with almost every college stereotype in a very serious manner.
