This message forum used to be real good, lots of insight and knowledge and hoops knowledge being passed around. Now it just sucks. Too many stupid NBA player drafts, leagues, etc that no one cares about. Back in the day it used to be about Smallworld and TSN Hoops, (again!) now it just sucks. |

Vent on brother.
You can either try to make the forum a better place, or exit stage left, allowing the remaining people the awesome burden of trying to make this fourm, and the world in general, a better place.

And your post changes that how?
I won't argue that the forum is not what it once was. Mnay vets long for the Good Ole Days, but times have changed and many of those vets have moved to roto leagues. There are no rules prohibiting discussion of roto-leagues or their drafts. In fact, Guru himself has started and participates in some of those leagues. I don't think the boards "suck" because of this. I think in some ways it's a better place because there is more than one interest. Competition is now more personal and in a lot of ways more fun. The TSN format wears on you after awhile. I'm still playing, but it isn't as much fun as it used to be. In fact, if I didn't firmly believe I could win $100+ I probably wouldn't play. I'm simply a sucker for a 100% return on my investment and a glutton for the grind that is TSN.

Pissed, I hear you. People seem a little less likely to give out information now. Maybe the spirit of learning the game (as we all did years ago) led to more freely sharing information. It might also be that the paid nature of the Ultimate TSN game means that the player information (for instance) has some real value now, outside of making this forum value-added.
I don't have the answers, frankly, though I share the frustration a bit.
Mike D., these might help. And increase productivity as well!

This issue crops up at the beginning of just about every season. There are obviously three non-destructive things you can do about it:
1. Accept the forum for what it is.
2. Do something to improve it. Provide the type of info or chatter that you'd like to get from others.
3. If neither of those are palatable, then leave silently.
Obviously, I'm not out to chase people away, and I don't want option 3 to sound sarcastic or testy. But I do realize that there are some people whose needs will not be fulfilled by this forum, and I can't make it all things for all people.
In fact, if there is one thing I've learned in the 5+ years of hosting RotoGuru, it's that the forum is very difficult to steer. I can make suggestions, promote some standards of decorum, deal with abusive behavior, etc. But I cannot control the substance and tone of the threads. Those grow out of the Gurupie community, and while all of you can collectively control that, I cannot.
That said, it does not appear to me that the forum is dying. In fact, current server bandwidth usage is about 20% higher than either of the past two years (for the same time period). It is also higher than at any time during the past baseball season. So someone must be getting some value out of it.
The shift away from TSN/Smallworld chatter has been gradually occurring over several years. I'm sure there are many reasons, most which are repeated every time this topic resurfaces. Suffice it to say that if you aren't also giving what you like to be receiving, then you have no gripe. It is unfair to expect this to be a place where information flow is one way, and then complain about it.
That said, there still seems to be plenty of value here. Some of the daily chatter and discussion happens in the various division threads - Belly, EuruGurupies, Patron, Puget Sound. Just because you might not be in a specific division doesn't mean you can't read (and participate) in those threads.
A lot of people have gravitated to roto-style games, and while those are more difficult to develop universal tools for, I have been trying to make the forum more useful for that game style. If you haven't taken advantage of any of the open invitations to join one of those leagues, then maybe you are missing out on something you'd enjoy.

Dave has done and continues to do a great job with the site. I started a thread before the season on a similar topic. Three does seem to be a "members only" or "invitation only" type environment with so many "private" leagues and divisions ruling the board. This isnt a bad thing either since many of these players have been playing against each other for years and enjoy the tough competition but it does leave others sitting on the "outside" looking in. I think newer patrons just have to realize that none of these are really private and all are welcome to join in on discussions.
btw, the tools are still the best anywhere and can only improve with new ideas.

Of course, I'd go from making 2-3 treys a night to making a 100 or so. :-) Okay, so maybe not such a good idea. Did you have something in mind penngray?

I don't care how many leagues, drafts or rant-and-rave threads there are on here. IMO there isn't ANYWHERE where you can information at the speed and accuracy that it shows up here. This site makes all games easier to manage especially for those of us with limited time. Many of the ones providing the insight and information are those who had great success in the past and present. And certainly, if its good competition you're looking for, you will find it here.
Ive seen some people get stomped on here and there, and thats a little disheartening, but for the most part people are polite and try to help. I've only been around for about a year. I appreciate and enjoy this site and the tools, and I'm not going anywhere. Thanks for the great job that's done here.

First of all, I weigh 160 points, not 150 as beastiemiked stated. Yes, I did weigh 136 as a six foot sophomore in college.
RSF is totally incorrect. The basket was TEN feet high. Ten foot basket, four foot fence, six foot person, you do the math.
There are ALWAYS fantasy sports to play. Rather than looking for lesser athletes in the usual sports, I recommend finding a sport that's not so well-known. Come to think of it, I know of a fantasy Pro Wrestling league that might have any opening...
Finally, one more myth to debunk. These boards are not dying. If people aren't talking about something you wish they would talk about... well, there's an option at the bottom of the page to start a new topic (wow, Guru must be a genius or something). If you want to talk about the Chicago White Sox, then do it. If the topic is interesting, people will respond. If it's not, well, you probably aren't bringing much value here anyway. Actually, that's not true. But still, the discussions there if you want it. No doubt about it.

I like penngray's idea of starting a new fantasy game. Personally, I'm really into boxing. Maybe there already is fantasy boxing - I have no idea. (Even if there already is a boxing game I think I'd rather play with rotoguru junkies). Rather than just having a pick 'em league, my idea would be that each player in a given league take on the role of "trainer", and everyone would draft a number of boxers from each weight division (enough that you would have fights fairly often). I think a rotisserie category system would be more interesting than a simple point system. I don't know if anyone else would be interested in this, but if so I call dibs on Mayweather and Mayorga. :)

1) In any internet community people usually eventually move on and for those who remain permanent members of the community this always produces nostalgia for our buds we miss and irritation at newcomers who don't seem up to the pedestal we put those oldtimers on.
2) For every new troll that comes along and irritates you with his substandard rants there really was one to match him in years past but you forget.
3) There prolly was something especially hardcore about the first people to find this site and make it their home. Each one of us regulars can look at ourselves and wonder if we ourselves aren't giving the Guru that nostalgic feeling for first year guys he himself misses.
4) When TSN went pay [along with half of the great fantasy sports internet sites] many were driven to other fantasy formats and I for one am thrilled at the development. This is my favorite fantasy sports community but TSN is not a favorite format for me. Instead of bemoaning the lack of focus on TSN, widen out and experience the full range of fantasy sports. I learn things in Swirve I wouldn't learn in TSN. I learn things in Roto I wouldn't learn from TSN. Even if your main focus always stays on TSN, widening out will make you a better TSN manager.

#24 start a new game for this site to use? How about www.kafenatid.net? Isn't that a site started by a gurupie for all gurupies to play so that they had games other than TSN to play? IMO he has some great games to play and anyone can join the leagues and get into the competition there.

philflyboy, very true. I just wanted to see if there are ideas out there for us to maybe create a new game. We have all the talent and skill needed for it and if people are bored with Ultimate games or with Rotoleagues maybe there is something new?? I really dont know, I still love the ultimate game, the $$$ side keeps my gambling addiction active ;)
#25, I have many projects on the go now ($$$ ones and free ones) like creating draft tools (auction, simple live draft, etc), creating custom TSN league tracking, Betting style leagues etc. I dont have a specific game in mind but Im a software developer so if someone needs something developed we can develop it!

Couple of things: 1) probably not constructive to use the words in the title to spur a constructive discsussion 2) doesn't help the perceived quality of the forum 3) didn't like most of the responses - however people could have been pissed by pissed's approach) 4) the most helpful point was that the quality discussions have moved to the league threads - i didn't know that as i had the same feeling as pissed - but when you go to those threads you get the same quality discussion TSN and Smallworld fans are used to 5) one just has to weave through more stuff - due to the popularity
