One quarter of adults aged 18-50 have a tattoo.
I thought it would be interested in hearing who amongst us have a tattoo. According to the story - People who drink, do drugs, have been jailed or forgo religion are more likely to be tattooed - so as you might have expected, I have a tattoo. Only one, got it on my 30th birthday. It is the Chinese symbol Tao on my right chest.
I might get another some day. |

i've been planning on a tattoo for the past year or so, since my dog passed away. almost got it on the first anniversary of her death, but didn't want to deal with a new tattoo over the summer, so i'll probably get it come the fall.
it's a fairly simple design, and i'll try and upload something today...

I've got a couple. Got one on my arm at 18 and the other on my back at 19 or 20 yrs old. Both were impulse choices picked from the albums in the waiting room. In each case I was in the tatoo parlor with a friend who was getting one and I decided to get one while I waited. I like the one on my arm, the placement and design of the one on my back were poor choices.
Despite all the warnings that I would greatly regret my tatoos, at 33 I really don't mind having a tatoo on my body that I don't care for. And I still think the one on my arm is kind of cool. Really I'd like more, as I believe additional work around both pieces would make them look much better but on the list of frivolous things that I'd like to spend money on, tatoos aren't currently very high.

I have 3...all done after my 50th b'day!
Upper right shoulder blade - yin/yang symbol (or pisces symbol in purple & teal)
Upper left thigh (outside) lacey vine with tiny flowers and 3 hearts.
Outer side of left ankle - Chinese tranquility symbol inside a sunburst (my son's design).
Funny thing is after I got the first one and told my son - he said "You can't get a tattoo! You're my mother!" LOL This from the same kid who told me I couldn't go to an AC/DC concert 'cause I'd get hurt. Right...
BTW - Sarge has no tats, no piercings.
I've never been arrested/jailed...the rest? hmmmmm

From the article:
"A generation or two ago, Yu's tattoos - to say nothing of his pierced nose - probably would have placed him in a select company of soldiers, SAILORS, bikers and carnival workers.
And yes, I have 8.
Upper shoulders and upper back.
None can be seen unless I have on a tank top or no shirt.
2 were done stateside and the other 6 at Pinkies in Hong Kong.

I have 7. Canadian Flag on my right shoulder (we're born with these in Canada though ;-)) Irish armband on my right arm, New Zealand fern leaf on my right breast, the Japanese symbols of Love, Health and Freedom on my lower back, and 'gnothi seauton' or 'know thyself' written in greek on my upper back. Wearing shorts and t-shirt, you can't see any of them, unless the t-shirt is very short sleeved. I don't regret any as of yet, as they all mean something quite important to me (save the armband...that's just there to look cool) But check back in 10 years and I'll let you know what I think then...

5.
L shoulder high, the Japanese kanji (the Japanese calligraphic pictograms derived from the Chinese) for patience superimposed over a full color koi.
Beneath that to the elbow, three samurai in B/W line only - it's too intricate to throw color into.
R shoulder a large dragon in color.
R arm to elbow, an olde english script armband Semper Fidelis
A belly button centered kanji ki. (Chi) That's the only one I'm even remotely considering maybe someday regretting, as it forces me to do situps still...

bmd - Finally at home. Just finished a 10 month trip. This one took me to Europe (2.5 months living in Berlin, some travel to Switz, Belg, Holl,) SE Asia (Thailand 2.5 months, Malaysia 1.5 months, Vietnam 1 month, Cambodia 10 days or so. Also time in Brunei and Singapore), and two months in Western Australia. Last year I was in Mexico, Belize and Guatemala for 5 months or so and the year previous I was living in New Zealand for about 7 months.
To answer your question, I think 17 countries altogether. I work my ass off in the summers (starting tomorrow) and take off the rest of the year. Not sure where to next year...

I have 3 more I'd like to get:
1. Patience kanji (not sure where, maybe on left shoulder) 2. Tiny rose vine w/1 rose circled around my thumb. The gal who did my 1st tat had this and looked just like a thumb ring. 3. Small line drawing of a sleeping cat - on top of my foot.

I took my son to a waterpark yesterday and it seemed like 90% of the people who looked older than 15 had at least one tattoo. I was surprised at the number of older women who had one. I have one on my left shoulder blade. My three best friends and I all got the same one before we deployed to the desert. I don't regret it even though I never thought I would get one.

Matt S...your were in school forever..and now on vacation for ever...nice gig. PD toooo funny.
For me, nada..tats, piercing etc,...guess Stuck and I shared the same...Are You Experienced...60's moment. Hmmmm, no tattoo, but I do/have suffered some of the symptoms. Funny... my 3 kids 24, 34, and 36. None with TT, but youngest 2 (the girls) share the piercing bug, middle one in navel and ears (multiple in each), youngest, tongue and bottom lip.
Even though I played in a rock (Rolling Stones imitation) band every other month or so in Vegas from 1995 to 2000, I never had the desire for skin art...and my kids hammered me to NOT get pierced.

I just got my first two weeks ago actually. A large cross with a thick black border and a yellow ring in the middle with "Isaiah 54:17" scripted above the cross. It takes up most of my left upper arm above the sleeve line right up to the shoulder.
Ten minutes into it I turned green and we had to take a break. After that we resumed and everything was fine. Not sure why I turned green either.
I wouldn't describe it as pain. It closely resembles being rubbed with sandpaper but it was far less painful than I had imagined.
I have plans to get another in less than two months in time for my birthday but I'm thinking about the design. I'm going to have this one put on my left bicep and then another put on the inside of my upper left arm.
I'm saving my right arm for a 1/2 sleeve job which is years away. I'm deliberately saving space on my body because once I run out, I'm out. I don't want to be out of the fun only two years after getting my first tattoo. After my left arm is done, I'll do one a year until I get the coverage that I want.
I loved being in the tattoo shop. Loved the sights, the smells, the whole feel of it all. My tattoo artist (Named Art coincidentally) is great.

I went ahead last weekend and got the second tattoo. On the back of my left arm, the same arm as my first tattoo, I have a wooden nail with a wooden crown of thorns around it with blood dripping down the nail. I have "Php 4:13" scripted above the tattoo. It goes from the top of my arm at the shoulder to the sleeve line.
I had the same tattoo artist do this one and I am extremely happy with it.
I had no issues during the tattooing like how I had last time. We were laughing about that. The artist just took a break every now and then to have a cigarette.
I'm planning on going back there sooner rather than later to have a "modern" Guardian Angel done on my left shoulder. I need to pick a scripture and finalize a design. By "modern" I mean an angel wearing modern clothes, yet still tasteful.

Katietx: Yes they certainly are. :) A good addiction in my opinion. Not nearly as painful or stressful as I initially thought. I would actually call it fun. I'm really looking forward to my next one. The really weird thing about it is that I could see myself sitting around the tattoo shop just watching people getting inked. A lot of these tattoo artists are really underrated as a form of art goes. You don't get an eraser or a new canvas to work on, one shot and that's it.
Seattle Zen: Posting from Pot Fest? Anyway, have fun mocking Christians and then tell us some more about a liberal utopia where everyone is "welcome". I bet if I were a Muslim homosexual getting a rainbow crescent on my arm you wouldn't have a derogatory comment to say.

Katie: I really want Ami or Chris Nunez to give me my next tattoo ;-)
That would be great. I would love for Kat Von D to ink me for obvious reasons. Do you have similar reasons for wanting Ami or Nunez to ink you too? ;)
Seriously, Kat Von D is extremely talented. I don't think I'd ever want a portrait done, which is her strong suit based on the show, but I'm sure she capable with other designs.
I am secure enough in my straightness to say that Nunez is cute and Ami is a downright looker. I just wish us white guys would look great with shaven heads too, but the stereotypes about whiteys with shaven heads is too strong.
Some of the 1/2 or full sleeve jobs that they do are unreal. My career would never permit a full sleeve sadly, but I'm saving my right arm for a 1/2 sleeve later in life.
Compromise with Sarge. Let him oogle at the women on the beach while you get inked. Everybody wins!
Everyone on that show seems highly talented. I'm not sure on Yoji, but he's an apprentice, I'm sure he's great too otherwise Ami would just throw him threw the window.
I love Miami Ink. They do make the process look a lot easier than it really is. This Old House, Extreme Home Makeover and Trading Spaces are all guilty of that too.
Did you see the recent one with the new applicant for the Shop Manager job? This was a college kid and they had a friend come in and act like Nunez owed him $$$ while they were all at lunch. The kid handled himself well, but the guy walked off with a wall painting. They told him at the end. Hysterical.

I'd really prefer Chris, more of a looker. But, Ami is a real bad a$$ - its the bad-boy thing. Lots and lots of "edge."
Kat is awesome. All of them are true artists and she is so incredibly talented. Sarge thinks she's a little on the *fluffy* side (weight wise), but to me she looks like a woman. Get tired of all the little skinny things. ;-)
Yeah, he'd love sitting on the beach oogling.
I have at least 2 more I want to get. Hopefully will be getting the one around my thumb before the year is out. Just need to visit one of the many shops here to see some work. Being a military town, there are probably more tattoo shops than churches.

There truly are a ton of good tatoo artists out there.

Katietx, make sure you catch the new Miami Ink tonight. It'll be a favorite of mine for sure. The commercials show Kat at a party living it up.
Also, it's looking like Labor Day weekend for my third tattoo, the modern Guardian Angel on the back of my left shoulder. A good friend of mine is getting what he calls a "horror movie version of the Superman 'S'" on his arm and so we're going to get inked at the same place.

No clue, if I got one like that it wouldn't be with horns, not sure i'd get one with the flames either, maybe just an arm band like that with the skull.

Great choice, Punk. Classic, timeless, sure to fade well. Don't take off the horns, it would completely throw off the symmetry and impact. Same with the flames. The eyeholes in the skull would look awfully dead without the color.
What is the meaning behind Punk42AE anyway?

Now since i'm still not sure if you were being serious or not Zen I had thought about it more.
Now sure how much different color inks and everything fade and what not. But what if it was like that Tat pic I linked... Get the armband and skull minus the horns, then the flames like blue and gray instead of the orange and red.

Timeless... well, that might be a stretch ;)
I'm far from an expert, but yellow/orange doesn't fade well. Blue might work better.

My new tattoo - hopefully Memorial Day weekend or week.
As Tree says, a tramp stamp across my lower back just below my waist (thanks for helping me decide which one!). The kanji will be side-by-side with tribal swirls in purple on either side.

Totally psyched!!!! I have plans to travel to Tampa FL over Labor Day and its seems that we will likely take a trip to Miami a the same time.
YES indeed, I'm giving some really serious thought to calling Chris @ Miami Ink and making an appointment.
This new tat will be a gift - so why not get one from the best. :D
But, if this fantasy tat doesn't happen over Labor Day, it will happen sometime in early Oct. in Austin.

Sounds like fun Katietx. I have some recent additions to my body that I'll post once I take some pictures of them.
Oh yeah, I'm sure your interest in Chris tattooing you is strictly professional right?
Who are you kidding? ;)

I'll probably faint if I get to do this. ;-) Not getting my hopes up as I imagine they are very, very busy and likely can't get an appointment.

Got a new one last weekend. Awesome work by a young artist. Small rose (pink) with a heart. His line work is extrodinary! The vines and leaves have really delicate lines. Sorry no pic as its in a somewhat delicate area. ;-)
Next one is the "tramp stamp" (as Tree calls it-lol) hopefully in August. :D

George Carlin:
Just because your tattoo has Chinese characters in it doesn't make you spiritual. It's right above the crack of your ass. And it translates to "beef with broccoli." The last time you did anything spiritual, you were praying to God you weren't pregnant. You're not spiritual. You're just high.

I have no tattoos and will never get one. I think they look pretty trashy in all honesty. If I see a girl with a tatoo I immediately think she's loose, especially if she has one on her lower back. If I see a guy with a tatoo I immediately think he rides a harley and hangs out at biker bars. It's just a first impression that's all.
Then we have the issue of older people getting tattoos or wearing earrings. To me these people are trying to compensate for getting older - it's rather sad. Kind of like Lindsey Lohan's mother hanging out with her daughter's friends at bars. The worst is gray-haired men wearing ponytails.
My question is, if you're 50+ and you get a tatoo, piercing, etc.... what exactly are you rebelling against?

probably why many people think you're an absolute idiot. ya know, first impressions and all.
the lower back tattoo is affectionately referred to as a "tramp stamp", btw.
that being said, if you are going to think a woman with ink is a whore, or a man with ink is in a biker gang, then i really feel sorry for your closed minded little world.
it reminds me of when i was a teenager and got my ear pierced, and my dad asked me if i was gay or a convict. i told him i was both.
20+ years, several earrings and other piercings later, my dad accepts the jewelry as much as part of me as my hands or legs or what have you.
Then we have the issue of older people getting tattoos or wearing earrings. To me these people are trying to compensate for getting older - it's rather sad.
while i have no doubt plenty of people get body jewelry or ink to compensate for getting older, i'm sure plenty of people get these things done for various reasons that are important to them - the most important thing about a piercing or some ink is what it means to YOU, not what it means to some dickhead on the street. i couldn't give two $hits about that moron.
My question is, if you're 50+ and you get a tatoo, piercing, etc.... what exactly are you rebelling against?
i was 16 when i got my first earring, 17 when i got my second (both on my left ear), 19 when i got my third (on my right ear), sometime in my early 20s when i got the other two earrings, 22 when i did my eyebrow, 23 when i did my tongue, 24 when i did my nipple, and in my early 30s when i got the double orbital in my left ear cartilage.
i will be days away from my 39th birthday when i get my first tattoos this winter.
for me it was never about rebellion. i wanted my ears pierced. i got my second earring when i saw all these other guys copying me because they were in israel and away from their parents so they saw it as a chance to get an earring without their parents around. i got the eyebrow ring because Mike Patton had one, and i'd never seen one and it looked pretty damned cool.
then i started studying body modification and what other piercings i might get, because i really liked the experience. all the non-lobe piercings were done in winter, because for me, it was sort of a renewal as the seasons turned from winter to spring.
i'm amazed that in 2007, when 50 percent of Americans between the ages of 21 to 35 have either a tat or a non-ear piercing, that there is still the type of close-minded discrimination that Ukula is describing.

Tree - You're more messed up than I realized. Just imagine what I, or the average person on the street, would think of you if I saw you walking on the the urine-drenched streets of New York. I tell my kids to stay away from people that look like that, I tell them they're bad people. Just my own personal beliefs, that's all.
You even admitted that you got your first piercings to get back at your heavy-handed father and now you think I'm off-base by suggesting that people with tattoos/earrings are rebelling against something?
Compensating. Is it a coincidence that Katiex got her first tattoos at age 50, a big milestone for most people, and you'll be getting yours at age 39, approaching another milestone year. I guess it really shouldn't matter what other people think, as long as you and your boyfriend are happy that's all that really matters.
If those tattoos are called "tramp stamps" then most other people must have the same first impression that I have.

i realize you're a troll, but you haven't been to NYC since about 1985, if at all, have you.
I tell my kids to stay away from people that look like that, I tell them they're bad people. Just my own personal beliefs, that's all.
well, it's a disgusting way to live your life, and i feel bad for your kids. you might as well be saying "i tell my kids to stay away from black people, because they're bad. hey! it's my personal beliefs, that's all!"
You even admitted that you got your first piercings to get back at your heavy-handed father and now you think I'm off-base by suggesting that people with tattoos/earrings are rebelling against something?
i'm sorry. what? i said that was how my father reacted. i took an action, he reacted - several months after the fact, btw, since my father lived in another state.
there was no rebellion on my part - in fact, my mom went with me to get the piercing done because i was under 18, and she had to sign a parental waiver.
Is it a coincidence that Katiex got her first tattoos at age 50, a big milestone for most people, and you'll be getting yours at age 39, approaching another milestone year.
you'll have to ask Katie. for me, it's an issue of the fact that i've spent a good 15 years wrestling with whether to get a tattoo because:
1. it's permanent, so i want to be sure i get something i'm happy with. 2. my people were given tattoos in an effort to catalog dehumanize them, thusly making the mass genocide of them seem like an "acceptable" thing to do.
When i get them, i'll be 38, approaching 39. my age is totally irrelevant to when i'm getting the tattoos. the reason i'm doing it in 6 months as opposed to now is because i really like the artist who has done the work on my brother in Canada, who i'm going to visit late this year.
I guess it really shouldn't matter what other people think, as long as you and your boyfriend are happy that's all that really matters.
and that statement pretty much sums up why most people think that you're an ignorant clod.

You seemed to have forgotten the policy that Rudi G. put into place in the late 90's where the New York Dept. of Sanitation changed the plumbing of Yankee Stadium and the Garden, directing the urinals to dump directly onto the streets surrounding the stadiums. It was an effort to keep Red Sox fans out of the City and it was a smashing success. It's policies like "Urine-Soaked Streets!" that make Giuliani the favorite of so many Republicans.

Not only that statement, but others as well. Each and every one of my tattoos has relevance to me. I don't give a flying rats tail what you think of them. If you saw me today...at work...you wouldn't even know I had one tat, let alone 5.
I consider it body art. Why at 50? Absolutely none of your business. Its MY business. As for my b/f thinking they are ok? Yes, since he got the same one. I'm not some nasty biker chick - yes I do ride on the back of a bike - but the b/f does ride a Harley (has 2 in fact) and not sure if he's ever been to a "biker bar."
I feel truly sorry for your children as they will be growing up with ingrained prejudices. Sad.

Tattoos have become more and more popular and spread to many different groups of the population.
Go back 20 years in time and you would have found the males with tattoos to be a very different subset of who now has them.
I find the biker comment to be very interesting.
20 years ago more military had tattoos than any other group. Still would probably guess that is the majority.
And meeting me on the street, you would never know I have a tattoo, let alone 8.
And I got all of them long before my 50th birthday.
No plans to get any more, but you never know what might tickle my fancy.
