I really am going to be out of contact except for 9-5ish PDT, so don't hesitate to call. After 7am (10 eastern) please. My boy usually gets me up well before 6, but there is the occasional treasured gift hour of sleep.

I will do my best to leave Qs, but given I haven't yet gotten a chance to do any research (and probably won't, except on the fly), they will not be long Qs. 5 will probably be the max I'm willing to go, at least early on. I'll have a name or two in my head while away from my computer, however, so give a ring.

OK, I'm still working through the trades in OTC, but the first round is right and so I'm opening it up for everyone to use. I'll be out of the office for about 2 hours and hope to work up the rest of the trades in OTC then.

You know, trading away my first round pick wasn't that bad an idea. Every year, despite spending so many hours preparing for this draft, I always assume some player was kept when he wasn't. This year I had thought that both Furcal and Harang were kept. I'd be kicking myself if I had drafted someone, then Tree takes Harang, who I really like.

Hope that jinxes him ;)

Terribly sorry. I got up last night at 4:30am to make this pick and my computer wouldn't boot. It had this problem last week, but I thought we had solved it. Recycled Spinal Fluid brought over his ancient laptop as a backup and THAT wouldn't boot, either. Two computers - no access. I need to talk to RSF today and hope to figure this out. OK I have to ask the league.

I just picked up Joe Mauer at pick 117 in our draft.

Now I know he's had injury problems (Zen sure knows) but he is top 80 at worse on every cheat sheet I see, many have him in the 60's and 50's.

What gives?

I like him, but I needed a pitcher and Shields was my target from the beginning. There are two camps, those who totally hate catchers and postpone drafting them until the very end, and those who use a high pick to get one of the few decent ones. I think most of us are the former.

I have him ranked 105th on a Rotowire generated cheatsheet taylored to our league parameters.

Beyond that, the anwser to why Mauer and a lot of other players last longer than expected (or dictated by cheatsheets) is pretty simple. Cheatsheets can never take into consideration runs on scarce remaining positions. Consider, with the number shortstops remaining on the table, Furcal, Guillen and Tejada become much more valuable than Mauer, since every catcher is still available. Cheatsheets can also never take into consideration runs on players who rack up stats in more specialized categories, such as base stealers (consider that Juan Pierre was kept by a team as loaded as Zen's) and closers. How many closers does your cheatsheet rank in the top 117 compared with how many are off the table right now?

since every catcher is still available.

Except for the three (VMart, McCann, Martin) who were keepers. I think that this makes Mauer more valuable.

I knew I should have checked that. Still, the more realistic inclusion of closers bridges the difference between my sheet and this draft.

I think Mauer was a good solid pick here - he's a good young hitter who has keeper potential. I looked at him, but felt i had other needs that were more pressing.

All other catchers pale after my man Martin, and should be taken in the 14th round.

Any opinions about keeping Martin in my other, 4 keepers league? The alternatives are slim - stupid pitchers, Adrian or Andrew Jones. I figure I gotta keep Martin, but it seems crazy to keep a catcher with only 4 keepers.

bili...glad to know someone feels screwed in this draft. I do.

Last summer, before I understood the value of "assets" in this league, I traded Rollins for Billingsly, (Manhatten for $21 ring a bell) and then wound up not keeping him through a series of very bad decisions on my part.

I am surprised/pleased to get him back...for his potential. If he can cut his BB/9, he get to elite pitcher status.

Or not.

BTW...I may be out of pocket from after dinner tonight through tomorrow night. I'll leave aqueue for PD. If it runs dry, hopefully he can call me on my cell.

Man, finding out that I don't have a 4th round pick really messed me up. I definitely would have used a different pre-draft trade strategy.

I seriously considered punting saves considering I only have 3 picks before the 5th round and that I'd have to blow two of them to secure two guys with solid holds on a closer job. I probably would have been much better off.

Yeah and everyone overpays in this league because they know how many vultures there are during the regular season circling for fresh meat to throw on their bench as soon as there's a whiff they might be the new closer (Bili).

Lots of Roto Gurus say "oh, don't over pay for closers you can grab some of the waiver wire"...yeah well they haven't played in this league. Grabbing the "next replacement closer" is like tracking the Lochness monster.

Very true. I had unbelievable luck last season with saves. I kept Chris Ray (oh, boy!) and drafted Brian Fuetnes, yet managed to finish second. Jose Valverde was my savior, but I was able to make two waiver wire pick ups. Coldwater had just cut Brian Hennessey when he was named the Giants' closer. I had the second waiver priority, behind YOU, and I gobbled him up. Likewise, I headed the sage advise to pick up J. Soria right before the trade deadline when the sages were saying that KC was likely to trade O Dotel away. They did and Soria kept me in a few saves. Very lucky last year. The odds of finishing second in saves again this year are shrinking as the closers come off the board.

I had Capps (I think it was him) before he was closer and after I dumped him while he was on the waiver wire, he was named closer and someone scooped him up.

I had both capps and hennessey at some point very soon before they got the job, but I churn too much, and had cut them for marginally higher potential relievers.

I'm just hoping to finish in the top half with saves, even with two closers already in the stable.

Will pick in about 10-15. Sifting through a lot of queued players right now.

#101: I paid the ten bucks already for OTC, and there's no need to reimburse me. In fact, since most payments I'm getting seem to round up the amount owed for the Yahoo Plus league, I don't think I'll be out anything anyway.

I was the one who had Capps most of last year, and almost kept him before the Hamels deal came up. Originally I was going to keep one starter(Oswalt) and two closers between Street, Capps, Jenks and C Cordero.
I'm plenty happy Manny Corpas dropped to me, though.

I was moving Vazquez up to the top of my cue.

After the page reset he was gone.

I thought it was a mistake so I hit the back button and moved him up again, again he disappeared.

Then I realized...

OK I picked. Here's the deal, it's midnight here, I will be up in 8 hours, about 12AM EST. Will this draft get back around to me?

I can leave a short cue but I hate to make a decision that is 13 picks away. Part of my process will be what positions are taken.

This draft is going fast. does it seem likely we get through 13 more in 8 hours...yes.

Maybe I leave a 5-7 man cue and hope one is left.

Also text my cell phone, I will hear it and get up to draft.

I think there are a couple of mistakes in the trades you've made for the 4th (11th in Kaf) and 5th (12th) rounds.

I do not have pick 4.12 (or 11.12 in Kafenatid or #54 overall). That's Tree's pick.

I should have pick 5.03/12.03/#59. I got that from Punk42AE when we exchanged 1st round picks.

Punk should have pick 5.12/12.12/#68. He got that pick from me in the same deal after Tree traded it to Sox last year along with some magic beans.

I actually was deciding between Gordan and Kendrick with my last pick. The only reason I took Kendrick is only 7 managers had picked 2nd base but 10 had taken third. I thought he had better odds of falling but I suppose everyone's read the hype.

The way I see it, we should be getting through three rounds a day. I should be making a pick in the early morning either from my Q or after I awake and I should get through two more rounds. At that rate, we should do rounds 8, 9 and 10 tomorrow, 11, 12, 13 on Friday and finishing Saturday. That's ideal as we really have had a hard time rapping this thing up on a weekend in the past.

So far we've avoided any major hang-ups. Congrats to all. Now, quit taking my guys!

MITH: The indication on OTC is "Queue Unavailable: Filled" Unless he designates me as a DP, I don't have access to his queue. I can, as Commish of course, pick a player for him on OTC, but I wouldn't know if that is who he wants!

Ooops. I am sorry. My trip this AM cancelled due to dead battery. I turned off the OTC queue which is loaded with 20 names. Son called around 4 hours ago and I left and went to shoot shot guns with him. I had been waiting for Pauncho's pick, and he must have clicked just after I left. The bad part is I didn't turn my queue back on before leaving.

I am sorry...that will not happen again. It is not my style to hold up drafts. Never has been, never will be...but I sure screwed this up. If I am away from the computer again..my queue will be on for everyone in the league. My bad.

Arg. Okay. I'm off to smack a silly rubber ball around and then out for beers with my son.

I've slapped down 10 names, but I really only want one of them, so keep your filthy, nasty, grubby fingers off him, Tree and Zen. I mean it.

If it somehow comes around to me twice without me checking in, don't draft two players from the same position.

I've given ALL of you viewing powers over ALL of my choicest, tastiest players, so if I for some reason don't repeat as champion, we all know the reason why.

really effcient and fun draft this year. PD's hybrid OTC/Board draft was a stroke of genius.

I agree, except for my last two picks. Last night I indicated I would be gone most of the day and left instructions for my picks, one of which was to not double up on positions, especially back to back. With the two different types of "available" offered on OTC, the one I chose allows to search a que so as to avoid this type of situation.

As it was, there was a position besides outfield left in my que. In the future, designated pickers need to carefully read the entries in this thread before making a pick.

PD to your point about people making their own last pick.

What if they turned the que on thinking "well that's that, the league will take my top pick". Now they are away from the computer, not thinking of looking because they know their que is on?

After hearing of people doing this for mock drafts, I am going to enter our drafted squads into an ESPN league and let them be to see what the results will be at the end of the season. I'm curious to see how everyone does compared to the real final standings, should give us a little incite into who made the best moves during the season.

Haven't decided if I should enter every player, including the bench, or just starting line-ups. Suggestions?

I used to do this, using an amalgum of rotowire stats and my own biased stats, if you remember. No time anymore, but what I did was take just what I decided were the starters and just use them.

My trouble was taking into account the different mix of starters and closers, which has a pretty big effect. If one person has 4 closers and another has none, it's hard to adjust for that imbalance.

Zen Maybe if a starter gets injured you move him to the bench and bring in a drafted replacement.

Nope, I'm not going to do a thing once they are set. If one of your keepers or high draft picks goes down, in the real world you make a change. It's the changes I want to measure, the measurement is the difference between the unaltered ESPN final results and our results.

I now realize that I have to only do starters. What good does it do to have totals from the ESPN league that has four extra players (the bench)?

The rule has always been you have to announce it before the prospect draft starts...that's why I asked PD to give us advance warning.

We should probably lock all the teams until after the Prospect draft is complete so that doesn't happen.

Punk we don't lock the teams and in fact you will likely see a flurry of activity right after the 2 day waiting period, it's part of the fun of the league.

Everyone has an equal shot so it isn't really an issue.

I'm putting players into Yahoo right now. However, there is one player (so far!) that was drafted but is not currently in the Yahoo database. In the past, when this occurred, it was caught right away and corrected, but here we are days after the draft.

The draft rules call for only players currently in the Yahoo database to be drafted. Obviously this was a mistake not to have noticed this player wasn't in Yahoo. Nevertheless, I have no choice but to declare tree's 8.12 pick of Johnny Cueto to be null and void.

Tree, you may pick a replacement player at your convenience.

If not, I'll give him the #1 waiver priority so that his replacement player is what he'll get (and I'll move his priority to where it should be after his pick, should this all come out this way).

and no offense to PD's effort, but *this* is why using two different databases to draft with sucks.

Cueto was in OTC, so there was no pause on my part to look elsewhere, because, quite frankly, he was in the automated database that we were using for this draft.

Tree I understand the problem with OTC but we were only using it as a supplement. We all agreed the real draft was the one here.

Besides the issue has always been how can you draft someone who isn't in the database for the game we are using? This has come up before and the rule has always been you have to drop the player.

If the game we use is Yahoo, and the player isn't in Yahoo at the time of the draft, then relying on OTC without checking is nothing more then an honest mistake, but a mistake never the less.

This will give us a couple of days to play around, add/drop, etc. Remember that all players start out on waivers, and there is a two-day waiver period.

This comes up every year. Or at least every year that I've been in the league.

Each time the debate is the same. Everyone not in favor allowing us to draft players outside of Yahoo's database fallaciously argues that you can't have an active team in Yahoo unless all of the roster spots on that team are filled.

Then it's always pointed out (usually by Tree and me) that this is a gross misconception, that you may indeed have an active team with only 20 or 19 or 12 or 3 or 0 roster spots filled. We've gone through the same stupid dance every year I'be been involved with the league and Nerve is probably right, you won't drum up the votes.

The Politics forum baseball league is the only one I've ever been a part of that conducts it's draft outside of Yahoo and disqualifies all players not in the Yahoo database.

#428: I don't know that anyone is making the argument that you can't have an active Yahoo team. I'm certainly not. My argument was that changing the waiver priority around is a pain in the ass in order to make Tree the #1 waiver priority (so he can get his replacement player), then put him back into the proper order while other managers have put in waiver claims themselves in the meantime. It is far better to get that name from him before we open up the waiver wire.

I don't see why we should change it

1. The rule was set in place to prevent a problem that we've repeatedly proved never existed.

2. It is a limitation that discourages the extra research that some of us do. One of the basic concepts of fantasy baesball, especially in a league that is on the deep side (such as this one) is the reward of finding deep sleepers and gems that other managers will overlook. This rule actively discourages this. Tree should be rewarded for finding Cueto by being allowed to draft him.

That's not true; Brandon Lyon caused the same problem a couple if years ago. There's never been a problem with picking up prosepct eligible players who are in the database.

My memory of the origins of this rule was that everyone just thought it would keep things simpler; it's a vestigial rulem IMO, and I wouldn't be opposed to getting rid of it going forward. T

Pros:

Limits the potential draft list to a discrete set of players available to all

Much easier to administer

Enriches the prospect draft pool

Tradition--draft strategies in the past have the assumption of Yahoo database inclusion.

Messes up the waiver order to take players after the draft when they come into Yahoo (unless the rule change makes clear that a manager would have to use a waiver pickup for the player(s) in question).

Cons:

Makes the use of OTC dicey if we cannot cross-check against Yahoo's database.

Discourages research and the risk of taking prospect-level players in the regular draft

Not just prospect level players, but many players who simply didn't appear in an MLB game in the previous year. This year Juan Gonzalez is locked out. I recall Robb Nen was not included a couple of years back when he attempted a comeback. MBJ brought up Brandon Lyon. Any player returning from a stint in the Japanese League, for example would most likely be exempt.

No. A typo is a misspelling. Nix is intentionally there, including a recent update flag next to his name and his "stats" (all dashes since he hasn't compiled any yet) are there as well. absolutely not. it's based on the fact he's likely the third starter in the Reds rotation. it came from this passage from rotoworld...

Johnny Cueto shut out the Phillies for the final four innings to secure a save in the Reds' 6-1 win on Wednesday.

The Phillies used the same nine for the entire game, so Cueto was facing some close to their regular lineup, making this another very impressive performance. It may be time to pencil him into Cincinnati's rotation along with Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo, which would leave two spots...

AF - I agree and to be perfectly honest what displeases me is Tree made the mistake, then he comes on here and all he has to do is drop a name but instead he wants to "research".

fine. I'd like Evan Longoria on my team. or maybe Cameron Maybin. Oh, wait, they're already somebody's prospects? i'm sorry, didn't realize that, as i didn't have time to do some research.

look - i'm getting screwed out of a mid-round pick. i ultimately take responsbility for that, but instead of me tossing out some name willy-nilly, how about giving me more a little time to find a suitable replacement?

Longoria, one of the top prospects, is in the yahoo database. Fukudome, Rasmus, Bruce, just to name a few others, have never played in an MLB game, and are all in the Yahoo Database.

this is one of the main reasons why i find this old and outdated. there is no rhyme nor reason as to why a player is, or is not, in the yahoo database, and it penalizes owners who do their research.

You're intitled to your opinion but that's has never been the case with this league to my knowledge.

Well, he needs to make his pick today so that PD can activate the league and we can get the Prospect Draft started, as suggested. The idea that he needs a ton of extra time to make the last pick of the draft's a little silly.

Now might be a good time to clarify who can be picked up on waivers during the propsect draft. My memory of the "Prior Rule" is that prospect eligible players may not be picked up on waivers until after the completetion of the prospect draft. My understanding is that one of the reasons put forth for holding the Propspct Draft directly on the heels of the regular draft was to keep this rule from unduly holding up the waiver selection of such players during the season. The "Prior Rule" was also in place, in part, because of the problem of such high profile players not being in the Yahoo! database. The need for the Rule still exists, obviously....

I'll be lucky to get a pick in before I leave the country, BTW.

I don't know that he has proposed anything yet. I see is a bunch of names being thrown around and a lot of rambling but no alternate database.

We have a method in place for proposing new rules or making rule changes. I would like to hear all arguments if that's not asking too much. This league has worked fine in the past using the Yahoo player queue as a drafting standard. If you or anyone else have discovered flaws in this system then please point them out and give me a better alternative and then I'm with you.

never, at any point, did i indicate that i wouldn't make a pick today. i got home last night after midnight, after being out of town since Friday morning.

Tree said he'll make his pick by tonight. PD has said that he will start the prospect draft on Thursday. While I don't know why we must wait until Thursday, I also don't see how rushing Tree (rather than giving him until tonight) will help PD get the Prospect draft started any faster. Do you?

And I certainly don't see why it is necessary for Action Figures to demand 4 times this afternoon that Tree make his pick, much less chide him for stating that he wants some time to look it over.

The issue isn't the prospect draft, the issue is getting the league started so if we want to make some moves we can.

I have a move I likely want to make and once PD starts the draft it will still be a 2 day waiting period. The longer we wait, the more time the rest of the league has to catch up on research.

That's all.

I think it's reasonable Tree gets some time to make his pick...I just don't think saying "take your time" serves any purpose but aggravating those who are anxious to get active.

This whole discussion is getting petty though.

I believe this refers to prospects who get added to yahoo who were not in the draft time database. There is nothing stopping us from picking up someone on waivers who was available for the draft right?

The rule was always to prevent people from grabbing prospects who were dropped into the data base between the draft and the prospect draft.

Is there anything inaccurate about this statement?

I don't think we can pick up any "prospect eligible" player until after the draft. I don't remember a disinction (or an easy way to discern) between those added before and after the draft.

We used to have a problem with such players being picked up - like PD said, that's why we oushed the drafts together.

MBJ what I mean is, there are a couple of players I almost took during the draft, who were in the yahoo database at the time of the draft. I always thought these were fair game. The problem started when we had 2 months between the draft and the prospect draft and "new" prospects were added to the pool.

That was always the controversy, not players who were available in the draft time data base.

It's easy to check short term because Yahoo logs a list of new additions that can easily be checked.

Nope, Nerve. Until the prospect draft is over, no one can pick up any player who has not had 300 AB's or 125 IP's. You could have drafted one, but you can't pick one up now.

Zen 482...I think you are wrong.

I still challenge the rule that we cannot pick up a prospect before Thursday as long as he was part of the original draft day database.

I actually went back through all the rules and as late as 2006 found this in the rules Madman wrote up for us.

j) Prior Rule. Until the Prospect Draft is concluded, no prospect that was ineligible for the regular draft can be acquired by any team.

That's exactly how I remember it. Was there a rule change?

As long as the player was part of the yahoo draft he is eligible to be picked up.

Someone show me a different rule, I can't find it.

The reason we "moved up the draft" was so that new prospects that got added during the season couldn't be added to rosters. It was too confusing to keep track of the newbies, but the originals were always allowed to be added. That is what rule J The Prior rule states.

Someone please show me were this rule was changed or I am reserving the right to draft a prospect that was in the original draft as I believe that is the correct rule.

I think injuries are gonna force Hu into 3B immediately. I looked into him myself. Between 1B and 3B, the Dodgers are gonna open the year really scuffling for healthy effective players.

Heh. That's funny!

You may be right, Baldwin. IIRC, LaRoche is out for a few months, and Nomar has a broken hand.

... well Nomar can play through the micro-fracture of his wrist, rotowire claims. Odds are he'll get hurt again however, playing 3rd ever day. His bat's anemic these days anyway. Hu would likely be an upgrade, if he can hit in the majors. Or even if he struggles for a month or two.

Got the queue, nerve.

AF is up. I just made MBJ's second (and last) pick.

I'm off to Mass in just a few. Will pick when I get back if AF has already picked.

Dunno how I missed that Balentine wasn't already on a prospect keeper roster. It happens every year that I am just sure one player must be a keeper already and I overlook him.

This draft is not moving. Doesn't someone have the ability to contact AF...I remember him posting that during the regular draft.

I will be gone (sporting clays tournament) tomorrow from @ 9-2PM CST. I'm not going to leave a 50 man queue, so if draft hasn't reached by tomorrow early AM..it will be shut down untill 3-4 EST

Hey, Perm, do you still have Nerve's Q? He's up.

I'm going to be on the road this weekend with limited access Saturday night, Sunday morning. I'll be at a Draft with Biliruben, actually, so I will have my notes with me. PLEASE call (36oh) 5six2-1171 and I'll make my pick over the phone.

I have three picks this year as I called Phil Hughes up before the draft. With Bili only having two, that means I have the last pick. I will make the last pick Sunday night, if it gets to me.

I think we are going to have to formalize the calling up process a little better. The fairest way to do it, I think, is exactly as Zen is doing: Declare the regular and prospect keepers, call one kept prospect up during the regular draft (in exchange for their last pick), then pick an extra player in the prospect draft.

What I'd like to avoid (or even ban), are callups during the prospect draft.

That's been the rule, you have to name prospect u r calling up b4 draft to get a replacement pick.

I picked up Fukudome before the prospect draft began but I dob't see how that effects the draft one way or another. I don't get to reuse that slot in this yars draft anyway as much as I'd like to.

why wouldn't you, you called him up before the prospect draft started?

That has always opened a slot...as long as you did it before the first prospect draft pick.

This year I think if you did it by Thursday though you should be OK since that's when the commish said the draft would start and MITH just decided to pick early.

I was sure hopin someone would say that but I was worried because I had to declare him a keeper again before this draft. I picked up Fukudome the first day the system would let me and before this started.

Anyone else see this the way Nerve does?
