This year I think if you did it by Thursday though you should be OK since that's when the commish said the draft would start and MITH just decided to pick early.
i expressed concern to the commish about this, as i had plans to call someone up, but all of a sudden, the draft started...

I was sure hopin someone would say that but I was worried because I had to declare him a keeper again before this draft. I picked up Fukudome the first day the system would let me and before this started.
Anyone else see this the way Nerve does?
I don't think there is even a debate Baldwin. You added the player to your yahoo roster before the draft started. The rule has always been that you free up a prospect slot if you do this...where's the controversy.
Tree if PD acknowledges you contacted him about adding a prospect to your roster before the draft then I don't see a controversy there either although you should have posted it in the draft thread to the whole league and added the player to your roster.

In 2003, nerve declared:
Anyone in the minor league or who has been drafted to be in the minor league (We never said this but I would think no amatuers) can be drafted as a prospect. (post 29)
Likewise, our last two prospect drafts included this note in the first post of each prospect draft thread:
The player pool for this draft is limited to professional baseball players who meet all of the following qualifications...
If the rule was changed I haven't found it yet, and if so we've ignored it the last draft or two.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday.
Why should Nerve's post 29 from that thread be considered binding? In fact teh parentheses portion confirms that this was merely his interpretation of the rule and that he was the first to express this assumption.
As Boldwin points out, I'm pretty sure Upton was an undrafted high schooler when he was selected as a prospect in ths league. David Price might also have been. And I believe Jared Weaver was, as well.
Why should this particular musing from 5 years ago be considered binding over 5 years of contrary practice since then? I have no idea what Nerve could have been thinking that day but can anyone think of a good reason for why this should be a rule? Why we should even further handcuff the productivity of the above-and-beyond research that some dedicated managers do to keep a competitive edge?
I'll hold off from my next pick until PD makes a ruling. Someone please text me when I'm up: 7one8.too49.seven0o4

If this is a rule(no amatuers), then I will need to re-pick, since Alvarez is in college this year. BTW, David Price was his teammate last year. Most of the top college players were drafted out of high school but deferred to attend college. Some are drafted multiple times before actually signing.

But we've also allowed college players. They are essentially players that "could be professional" age wise etc. but have chosen the college route instead.

I think the point is there might be a distinction between college and high school but I don't know if it's ever come up.
I know we discussed and agreed at the time of Weaver that college wasn't an issue. The point did come up and obviously I was able to keep him.

MITH
MITH 2003 was probably the year when we formed the league, I was commish and was probably just thinking out loud about rules. I'll go back and look at the context in the thread.
I know we've allowed college. I know it came up when I picked Weaver. It would seem silly to disallow college players since they are the same age as minor leaguers, often older, but have often just chosen to get their degree. It doesn't mean they wouldn't of been drafted by MLB.
I don't recall any high school discussions but that is probably more due to my lack of memory then a concrete belief it was never discussed.

In looking through a lot of posts, two things appear:
-wherever it was specified, the limitation was on professional players (minors, MLB, Japanese, wherever players are paid to play).
-we have ignored this limitation.
This seems to fall squarely into the commissioner edict area, I think, and so I will rule that the pick is permitted. I will also propose a rule to allow non-professional prospect picks.

Obviously that makes sense, especially considering that we hold our prospect draft prior to the MLB draft.
Banning non-professionals eliminates any player in the College World Series(or any stand out college player), say a Mark Prior or Ian Kennedy, who made major league rosters in the same season they wrapped up their college careers.

I'm not sure what the question is, Baldwin. You had one prospect (Fukudome) that you called up after the draft began. While you are always free to call up a prospect at any time, this doesn't give you another pick if you did so after the draft began.
Zen used his final pick to bring up a prospect, and so got another pick in the prospect draft because this was done before the prospect draft began.

because your waiver priority is 10, and mine is 3?
he wouldn't go directly to the free agent wire. he'd go to waivers, and there are 9 owners ahead of you, at least one of whom would certainly make a waiver claim to prevent you from attempting to circumvent the rules.

Baldwin everyone knew the draft was Thursday. You had a week to move him to your team but you waited until after the draft started.
Yeah MITH started early but the draft was officially starting Thursday and you waited then until the to make the move. It's been the rule once the prospect draft starts you can't open a prospect slot by moving someone to your team.
If you can move someone to free a slot after the draft starts I might consider moving Ellsbury...but I can't.

You've got it backwards, Nerve. I'm not tryig to free up a prospect keeper slot. Im trying to put him on my prospect keeper roster by dropping him from my regular squad and then drafting him.
I find it impossible to believe the rule is written so airtight that it excludes picking him off the waiver-wire during the propect keeper draft. But if that is the way everyone thinks it should read then the lawyer who someday formalizes these loosely written and unwritten rules of ours should make a note of this discussion.

Boldwin - you do not have a 5th round pick. as has been previously noted, you called up Fukudome after the prospect draft had already started.
stop being intentionally obtuse and ignoring several other members of the league, because it only serves to discredit yourself, and cause disharmony within the league.
Several owners have commented on this, and the commissioner ruled on this.

I picked Fukudome up the instant the system would let me. You will notice the only way I could have done it sooner would be to have asked the commish to do it for me and go around the WW waiver time-limit. I honestly thot I had gotten it in time but I now see MITH had one pick in Wed. That bites. I thot you yourself had agreed with me in post #2 that the issue was obviously in my favor and hadn't noticed since that anyone had disputed it. I thot I had beaten the clock and Tree was the one who missed the deadline. That was the flavor I got from his comment.
Did MITH and/or the commish intend to kill the chance to clear the prospect rosters of obvious call-ups?

You know, Perm Dude and I have actually been plotting this since last year. Baldwin - All you have to do is post your intention to call him up here on the boards, as all other managers, this year and previous years, have done.
Nobody screwed you except you, for not paying sufficient attention to this league in all it's complexities.

see, my problem is this. i too, waited until the last minute. i didn't trade for the starting CF of the Twins who is a serious speedster so he could languish on my prospect list.
but, thursday came around, and i didn't call him up. i had every intention to call him up, but didn't.
the rules were specific. the draft started thursday. all prospects should have been called up prior to that day.
if you're going to start giving people breaks because they meant to do something, but didn't, then we have a problem, not the least of which is that i want my third round prospect draft pick, which negates the entire fourth round.
you also need to grant MBJ another prospect pick because he called up Josh Hamilton the same day Baldwin called up Fukudome.
the can of worms you're risking opening here is large.

Baldwin could have communicated better but, IMHO, he should get his fifth pick. tree is right about the rule, such as it is, but we have always been more insisent on the spirit of the rule when a managers intentions have been made, or are inherently, clear.
in reviewing what Balwin posted and did it seems mnifestly that he was trying to call up his prospect before the schedled prospect draft without losing his waiver priority.
this is another problem caused y not stating the prospect draft immediately after the regular draft, i think.

Exactly. We've had a couple of bumps because of this (and because of the very early start to the season).
I'm not exactly certainly why Baldwin didn't put in a waiver wire claim instead of waiting until waivers were cleared. If he had put in a claim then the timeliness issue would be clear. But he didn't. I have to mull this over just a little bit.

Then why didn't you post on here and ask PD to put him on your roster?

Why should you have to put in a WW claim and lose your position..."
Because you want to get another prospect draft pick. Look, no one is doubting your ability to pick up your own prospect. There is no limitation on that. So if you want to drop your claim on an extra prospect pick we're done.

I am so sick of farm systems that screw me over I could scream. Do whatever, try and be consistant and don't give Tree the same deal next year that I got screwed out of this year.

No no, lets just leave it that no one gets to drop a prospect to his regular roster at the start of the year to clear a slot on the prospect roster. That works perfecly.

Nope, a little Kirsty Hawkshaw and I am just fine. I've seen the light. We should always do it this way for ever and ever. Don't know why I ever had a problem with it.

Just make sure to drink whatever it is before you go into the voting booth, Baldwin. I think you'll only vote Democratic when high on something anyway.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to this. With my mother-in-law sick, Obama-mania here in the Keystone State, plus a stupidly busy day Friday (including doing work on a very interesting book that tells evolutionary theory through a religious lens) it just wasn't possible to read over all this again and digest it all.
I have every reason to believe that while Baldwin should have done things differently to ensure he was within the spirit and letter of the rules, I have to allow that the Liberal Republicans who form this Administration and rule the RNC probably have addled things for him and therefore a little leeway while he considered drinking the Obama kool-aid is probably in order. So five picks it is.
Next year we will certainly go back to back drafting with no break, and that'll elliminate these problems. So there you go. The Commish Has Spoken!

Thank you, and I don't vote ever so there's one vote Obama supporters don't need to worry about.

No, I didn't ask or post bjork videos.:)
I never made my intention clear on Hamilton, unlike Baldwin; I was too busy. My loss. NBD.
