Subject: 2008 Poli Football League

  Posted by: taxman - [30741123] Sun, Aug 03, 2008, 02:44

To summarize, I volunteered to handle waiver claims for 2008, MITH has resigned from the league, no one has stepped fwd to commish for 2008, only 3 or 4 returning managers have checked in.

Obvious question...will there be a 2008 Poli Football keeper league? Now would be the time to make that call.

We have a long history of being a 'late-to-the-gate' league. The only time we ever failed to gel was when for whatever reason we dropped out of roto-basketball permanently it seems, much to my consternation.

OK, just read the other thread where Baldwin declines.

I would volunteer myself, but running a business(that's about half of 2007 sales) as well as raising two kids solo(actually three, since my 17 year old nephew is living with me full time) leaves me scraping for time just to do the research necessary to field a team.

Traditionally, PD has come to the rescue of poli sports leagues, and Tree has also stepped up when asked.
MBJ is about as trusted a political gurupie as there is, and Taxman took the effort to start this thread.

Those would be my top four candidates(I'm guessing bili is too busy being daddy - if not he would also be a top candidate).

Tax is right, we need to get a commish and a replacement for MITH this week!

We also need to confirm that Punk, Wiggs, Boikin and Clyde are still in the fold.

Since only Boikin posts here regularly, maybe e-mails to the others requesting confirmation is a priority.

As for a replacement for MITH:
Coldwater Coyotes
bibA
azdbacker
Razor
Jag
Boxman
Wilmer McClean
Texas Flood
Deepsnapper

How come regulars like Sarge, Seattle Zen and Nerveclinic aren't in this league?

thanks for the vote of confidence PV, and while i will remain in the league as a player, my desire to be commish is practically non-existent.

i felt i busted my butt to be as fair as possible at all times, and every year i got reamed for it. my energy to deal with it just isn't really there.

hopefully someone will step up, because it's a very fun league to play, and i'd hate for it to go away, because playing-wise, year in and year out, it's my favorite.

With the election coming up, I won't have time to commish (will barely have time to play!).

I say Baldwin should take his turn at the helm.

If no one steps up, I would be willing to volunteer as commish.

Besides the issues I mentioned above, these other things come into play:

> I have never been a commissioner of any fantasy sports league. Veteran commissioners would be needed to guide me and perhaps co-commish when necessary

> I have a rather large job in Albuquerque this fall, which entails at least one flight there in September, and a trip there in October(including a stop in remote Fish Lake, Utah for installation of a vacation home, weather permitting) for two days of installation. Days away from home - 5 to 6, with no internet most of the time.
November 17 - 21 I will be on a cruise to the Bahamas that I won from a manufacturer. I'm guessing internet will be limited, and even if not, I doubt my girlfriend would appreciate me abandoning the romance of the Carribean for the thrills and spills of fantasy football. Of course there's still time to dump her and invite one of my sports-addict buddies. Maybe we could hook up with some cute designers - female ones, hopefully ;)

I usually go to California for Christmas, but have no plans set yet.

Maybe these things won't be an impediment, as usually once the league starts the commish gig diminishes substantially. If the league agrees, and someone commits to helping me with the set-up and responsibilities, then I'm game to try.

If needed, I'm happy to set the league up and cooridinate the draft. Most other league matters have generally been handled by vote or general assent, anyway. I will be away from the country, but should have nightly internet contact for about a week from late September into the first week of October.

I would seem that the most pressing matter is to get a replacement for MITH. I nominate PV as League Recruitment Direcor.

Things are getting a bit easier these days, so I can pitch in now and again, but probably nothing too consistent or time-intensive.

I agree this is a great, competitive league.

It's frustrating having the best team every year and not winning, but it's my cross to bear with the head-to-head format. ;)

Without getting a consensus, I accepted MBJ's challenge -I nominate PV as League Recruitment Direcor. and have found a replacement for MITH.

He is regular poster here, so that should work out well. Before I post his name, I'd like to get at least a few league managers to agree that I'm not overstepping my position by offering this opening.

OK

Building 7 has agreed to join the league as MITH's replacement. He will be on vacation from Aug 7-11, which shouldn't be a problem.

Bldg 7 has been an annual contestant in the RIFC leagues, and should be a committed and formidable addition.

Unless there any objections, I suggest we formally offer the position so we can move on to setting a date to declare keepers and start the draft.

Lessie if I can cut and paste, assuming you are getting MITH's team:

We keep 4 offensive and 2 defensive players. Pretty standard scoring, iirc, except you get 1 pt/catch and returners are a bit more valuable than you'd expect in some way, but only if they have a regular gig as well.

The cool thing about football is a good draft an a couple fortuitous injuries, and you make the playoffs. And then anyone can beat me!

Didn't see if you guys need another - wish I had seen this earlier. If not, keep me in mind for next year, I'd enjoy this.

This year the NFL feels like fantasy football to me. Packers trade away my hero, so I have to watch the Jets play every week. Cardinals might compete for the playoffs. Bizarro world.

We're getting down to the wire here. We need to set a date for declaring keepers and a draft start date, as there may be conflicts.
We need to set up the league at Yahoo(plus?)and decide if we're going to use the the dual policy of drafting here as well as at Kafenatid, which worked well for baseball.

We have to make sure that everyone's e-mail is up to date and on file, including our new member Bldg 7.

I'm going to suggest that keepers be declared by Sunday 8/17 and we start the draft on Wednesday 8/20. That gives us a couple days to see who's available and develop a draft strategy.

Any thoughts?

Laurence Maroney
Michael Turner
Donovan McNabb
Dwayne Bowe

are all DEFINITELY on the trading block.

Brandon Marshall and Drew Brees are all also potentially available, but probably fetching something absurd in return, so they're not likely to be traded...

also...

unless someone has begun setting up the league, i'm going to go ahead and do it.

as last season's commish, i'm pretty sure i can just basically hit one or two buttons, and viola, we're good to go with all the same settings.

additionally, there is a new function this season that will let me hand over the reigns to someone else.

i'm going to load it up shortly.

We should be looking into a way to include Azdbacker and Boxman into this league. In a weaker moment I might even be tempted to give my team to one of those specific managers.

Boxman was offered a spot in the league last year when we had an opening. he rejected the offer, as did Walk and SZ.

i do not recollect AzD being a major contributor to the boards last year, so i don't believe he was considered at that time.

i recognize your insinuations. they're false, because, as i said, Boxman was offered a spot in the league and turned it down.

I better understand Boxman's positions.

Be that as it may...I've never had a business (or otherwise) agreement with an Aggie that I required be reduce to writing. Ethics (excepting politicians such as current Gov. my hand is in your pocket Rick Perry) and ability to accurately remember agreements run long and deep in the graduates of that Institution.

My recollection was that SZ threatened to quit if Box was invited.

NO. he turned down the offer. if you'd like, and it's that important to you, i'll find the email.

in fact, this was last season, and SZ was not in the league last year. i believe first we offered a spot to walk, then to sz, and then to box, and they all turned it down.

this is one of the reasons i stopped being commish, because sometimes it seems like people like to stir crap up where there are no problems.

So we're having an online fast draft?

that is the current setting, but it's definitely something that should be discussed within the league. i just wanted to set a time in case we went that route.

Only 8 teams have even registered for the league.

But don't fret. I'm good with my choices. I mainly pointed out the benefit of not being timely.

just saw this in another thread, and it lends itself to concern for a number of reasons:

We need some help in G24. PD has missed two picks and is about ready to miss his third. We need someone outside the league to come in and make his picks for him. Ideally this person will also have a CBS account to make things easier. We have no idea when he will return. Send me a note if you'd like to assist. Thanks!

Mon, Aug 18, 2008, 13:33 OK, am filling up my queue right now.

Turns out the cottage I am staying at not only has no internet, but no phone line. Grrr. Will pack in about 50 players on the queue, and should be able to check in once a day to refill.
Safe to say we can safely not check this board every ten minutes hoping to see PD's pick#1 nor is there any point in digging for his phone number in the short term.

wiggs posted this in another league we're in:

i will be going on vacation Saturday til Sat- I will have my phone, but i will have 0 internet access.

More to contend with. Even if we did a fast draft next Wednesday, wiggs would have to autodraft.

So, I'm going to make PD's first pick with the best of intentions so we can get rolling. If PD is AWOL for pick #2, someone else should make that pick, maybe bili or MBJ.

Can it be possible PD has no cell phone? And why can't Wiggs draft via cell phone? Personally I'd even push it till after Wiggs came back if need be rather than pick for someone else. It does beat the way REF's league is treating PD however.

I hate to say it - but with at least 3 managers nowhere to be found, and with no end in sight for the current situation, a fast draft may the only way to go.

i would be more then willing to do my picks by phone, the only problem is if I dont have my phone how long the wait will be. I really thought we would be into round 10-12 by now and then i could leave a queue for 2 or 3 rounds and it wouldnt be an issue. We have done nothing this whole week and that makes it impossible.

right now, i've set a live draft to happen Monday night at 10 pm eastern.

but someone else has to volunteer to input the keepers before then - and for any owners not there, it will autopick.

we're definitely running out of time here.

I've expedited several dozen drafts by phone and as long as everyone is willing to haul around their cheat sheets and their phones there is no reason this can't still be done as slick as owl poop as soon as everyone turns their cell phones on.

Baldwin - the deadline to finish sooner is because i am not around labor day weekend. it's a holiday weekend. i have no clue if i'm going to have computer access.

it wouldn't surprise me to know other people are not around as well.

MBJ - yahoo now allows you to change commissioners in mid-stream. i could simply hand over hte reigns to whomever will be taking over.

We need Punk's communication desperately, and Bili to get close communication with Clyde.

I have another idea as to how we might pull this off.

If we can set up two or three nights in the next week where everyone is available either by computer or phone, we can have a couple of psuedo fast drafts where we can pound out 4 or 5 rounds at a time. Shouldn't take longer than an hour per session.

Bili, isn't your B-Day around now, the same time as mine?

I'm thinking we should find a good cheat sheet and use that to pick PD's next pick. Anyone have a suggestion? A Yahoo ranking perhaps? We should avoid injured and possibly even avoid bye week conflicts for him.

personally, i feel like you have to go with an RB again for PD. at this point, in the 8th round, with only 2 RBs, would be cause for concern for me.

Does everyone feel that was a decent interval to give PD before we pick for him?

Actually that was me crashing.

Going by the top page of ranked players on Yahoo...

The first available would conflict with PD's other WR's bye, the second would conflict with his RB's bye, the next is a QB but he already has a QB, the next WR conflicts with one of his WR's. That runs it all the way off the first page and quite a few picks down.

Since we can't give him a pick near where we are at in the rankings without conflicting a bye, and since we all end up with quite a few WR's anyway, I am suggesting we give him the highest ranked player just this once even if he does conflict and that would be Welker. Any objections?

This is going by Yahoo's ADP.

I need a first motion and a second motion that that is a fair process and that PD has had a decent interval to pick.

I will point out that we often turn off the clock on weekends. I will also note that PD hasn't shown up on any poliboard thread for a week. I will also point out that we are way running out of time and I think if I were him Welker would feel like a real good pick even with the bye conflict factored in.

188Boldwin
      ID: 176322815
      Sat, Aug 23, 2008, 18:50
I would also point out that before this pick PD has 2 RB's, 1 WR, 1 QB, 1 TE...so a WR pick would be about right in the balance dept and we aren't throwing him off balance in that respect.

The other option is to go Tree's suggestion, RB.

The first, Willis McGahee just threw off his crutches from his second knee blowout and is just now running in a pool, and the next RB available is 30 yr old Edge.

That either means he is getting desperate for a 3rd RB right about now anyway and those would do, or by my lights I'd rather have Welker any day over that dreck.

Do I hear motions one way or another?

i definitely dont think bye weeks agould be looked at this early.

as for McGahee, he's not available. he was someone's keeper.

there are other RBs available, and i hate listing them all here, because they're undrafted players, at least one of whom i considered a better option than James, even if the guy i'm thinking about is in a RBBC.

i guess it's a strategy question here. i feel like you need three RBs to compete, and they're going fast....but Baldwin has another strat...

Wierd ctl-f malfunction there...must have mispelled it.

I don't feel Edge is all that bad a pick actually and I for sure don't think we should be gambling on rookie RB's in RBBC for him.

Since you pick directly after PD I suggest you don't pick the guy we steer PD away from for appearance' sake. Maybe we need 2 other opinions.

Clyde - what you need to do is this

1.01 Pani Roe, wrecking ball, Evergreen

except where thare is a "[" or "]" in the above statement instead put a "<" or ">", respectively.

(I can't actually put those, otherwise it would just bold it, and you wouldn't be able to see the html code).

Give 'er a try.

Boikin is walking home and won't make a pick for an hour. He'd be willing to let us skip him but I told him that wasn't neccessary. We've made good progress today and if we were on Kafenatid we'd be giving an hour leeway to pick anyway.

Besides I can really use the hour's sleep.

PD stole his Gerrard or we'd be moving again.

Fri, Aug 22, 2008, 14:38 i would be more then willing to do my picks by phone, the only problem is if I dont have my phone how long the wait will be. I really thought we would be into round 10-12 by now and then i could leave a queue for 2 or 3 rounds and it wouldnt be an issue. We have done nothing this whole week and that makes it impossible.

Amazing the values still being dug up in this round. I was so gonna take Warner but snatched out of my grasp at the last possible pick.

We really need to know the changes to the regular draft order in the last rounds.

Chris Johnson was my real target of all the rookie RB's and you can't have them all. I watched highlights of them all on U-tube and CJ and Slaton impressed me most far and away. Then again I am always tempted by the great runner whose coaching staff feels can't stand the rigors of being an every down back.

Getting WR2 production out of the TE slot was worth more than the risk of a rookie so I wasn't gonna pass on Tony Gonzalez for the second or third rookie RB on my wish list.

B7 doesn't have his VM set up so tho I called...

it can probably be knocked out in an hour, maybe two...

you can set it up where you enter round by round, or one team at a time.

i'll hand over the reins shortly, so you can scope it.

I'd prefer he pick now. See post 99.

If a major RB breaks his leg tonight, he has gained a large advantage.

I'm not going to insist, but it would avoid potential disgruntlement.
