Taxman had the gall to Ask how we do our waiver claims, back in the defacto draft thread, so I thought I'd start an in-season thread with the rules at the top (this is just a cut and paste, for the most part, so the names haven't been changed to protect the innocent). Not sure if we go pay for the plus thingy, this would be easier:
For new league members who are not familiar, here is the gist of Toral's explanation of the system from 2006.
We decided last year to opt out of Yahoo's default system where free agents can be picked up anytime. The major reason I believe was to avoid the situation where RBs 1 and 2 go down on Sunday and a player suddenly becomes valuable and goes to the 1st person to go to the computer. Some people are away many Sundays, some aren't near a computer and some just don't want to have to follow all injuries and rush to the computer when a player suddenly becomes valuable.
Requests for players are handled through the manual waiver system. Managers who want to pick up a player must make a request to the commissioner or his delegate (myboyjack was the delegate last year and has offered to do it again) by a stated time each week (usually Tuesday at 9 P.M. Eastern). mbj sifts through the requests and produces a report on which claims have been approved, publishes it on the message boards, and sends it to the commissioner. The waiver priority is bottom up, last to first based on the standings as of that time. Multiple claims and alternative claims (i.e., DROP Joe Blow PK and pickup John Doe PK OR Joe Schmoe PK) are possible. Alternative claims address the possibility of some other manager claiming the player you want before it's your turn to claim.
Adding to that, once any NFL game starts, all free agent players on those teams are officially "on waivers" and cannot be added to anyone's roster. If you want to add a player to your team after his game has started that weekend, you must submit your request to the (currently unestablished) delegate via email.
The waiver schedule we used last year was that the claims had to be emailed to the delegate by 9pm EST Tuesday nights. That night the delegate (Waiver Master?) processes the claims and announces where all the players landed in a Rotoguru thread designed specifically for that purpose. (Last year's thread here)
We all then have 24 hours, until 10pm EST Wednesday to add the players we've claimed off waivers. At that time, 10pm EST on Wednesdays, all players not currently on any fantasy team's roster then becomes a free agent, until kickoff for their next game.
Also, when emailing your claims to the Waiver Master, please be sure to list your claims in order of preference and include the first and last name of players involved and their positions and teams. For example:
1. ADD: Joe Namath, QB, NY Jets DROP: Fred Dryer, DL, LA Rams
2. ADD: OJ Simpson, KWM, Buffalo Bills DROP: Fred Dryer, DL, LA Rams OR Bill Bergy, DL, Phil. Eagles
This manager wanted to acquire both Joe Namath and OJ Simpson. Note that, knowing that he might not get both claims through the waiver system, and preferring to lose Dryer over Bill Bergy, he made Fred Dryer his first-choice player to drop both times. In case the Namath claim was successful, he listed a second player to drop for OJ, since Dryer would then no longer be on his team.

I guess I plan on pushing the magic, shiny, candy red, "StART SEASON" button at 3:00 EST today unless I'm directed otherwise.
Is there anything I need to do to the waiver order in the meantime?

Here is a fun free game I suggest as a bit on the side. If anyone wants to play it and form a league let me know. You don't need a league to play it however.
It's a player stockmarket game combined with a game stats scoring game.

Just figured out that wiggs jumped the gun this past week on claiming FA before the 10PM EST Wednesday. Explains why bili didn't get Weddle, whom he won in claims Tuesday and why garcia wasn't still around Wednesday night when I went looking.
Last year ...I had my team shut down by the then Commish for the same offense (albeit multiple times). It would be appropriate for our current league commish to point out the transgression by e-mail to wiggs and request that he abide by the few rules we know.

i think this is a really difficult situation, but i think Tax is 100 percent in the right.
Garcia was an illegal pick up, and thusly, shouldn't count. Obviously, the results tonight could render it null, but, if Tax ends up down by 17.13 or less, it is a big deal.
i don't see any other option other than dropping Garcia from Wiggs' roster, and unfortunately for him, he plays this week without a QB.

1)I posted # 64 at 1:30 AM Sunday morning
2)Tree posted @ 9:00 AM Sunday morning and sends e-mail notice to wiggs about illegal pick-ups Weddle and Garcia
3)at 9:59 AM, Sunday morning, Wiggs drops Weddle but not Garcia...available as FA QBs are: JaMarcus Russell, Gus Ferrotte, Kerry Collins, Joe Flacco, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Dan Orlovsky...he had choices and was there several hours before kick off..if he wanted to make it right.

Was Garcia a game-changer?
yea, unfortunately, he was.
Wiggs won by 9.81 pts. Garcia scored 17.13...
of the free agent QBs out there, every single free agent starter save for Wallace, Collins, and whoever was under center for KC scored over 9.81.
also - regarding Garcia - was he claimed by anyone in the official waiver process?
(this is why i'm looking for lots of input here. i don't want to be Solomon.)

bili....yes the illegal Garcia did make a difference. It was bye week for McNabb, only QB on wiggs roster prior to picking up Garcia. He did not submit a waiver request on Tuesday. FA pickups are barred until Wed 10:00 PM, he picked up Garcia at 9:00 AM Wednesday @ 13 hours early. I looked for Garcia @ 11 PM Wed , but he was gone, I didn't think much about it until Late Sat/early Sun when I found this whole mess had occurred and started posting 2008 In Season Football thread.
Final score: Tax......164.82 Wiggs....174.63
difference...9.81
Garcia.....17.13
Why doesn't wiggs chime in on this thread? By the way..wiggs posted an apology to bili Sunday morning at 11:ish acknowledging that he took Weddle by mistake...still he doesn't address illegal pick up of Garcia.
Again..who is commish?? Are we playing by the rules or not?

i think the commish can drop a player from a roster, retro to a certain week, and i think it changes the scores accordingly.
currently, i have commish powers. but no one is commish. that's why this is being discussed Tax.
it's a dicey situation, because as bili pointed out, Wiggs might have had time to pick up another QB if he had known earlier. adding to it, is the fact no one claimed Garcia in the waiver process, so while it was early and illegal, it didn't technically interfere with that process.
still, my inclination is that Garcia has to be dropped from Wiggs' roster, and he unfortunately gets a zero in that slot, but, again, i'm not the commish, so i think getting as many opinions as possible is important.

The reason I didnt correct the mistake of picking up garcia was because the only reason I notice the problem with weddle was because Tree emailed me and said it was an illegal pick up. As soon as I saw it I changed the problem. I never saw the problem with Garcia.
I think this problem is ridiculous it sat there for 5 days with no issues, you say you went to check it and yet said nothing until sunday morning. I didnt get a chance to check all the messages sunday morning. If you want to take the win away from me so be it. I will be playing out this season and I will be done with this league. I have never had as many bs issues in any league besides the poli leagues. I get bitched at for not making enough moves in baseball and lose games because I picked someone up.

Wiggs..when I look for a player that winds up not being listed with other FA available, I don't go back and look to see when that player was picked up. I discovered the illegal pick up and posted in this thead 18 hours before Garcia's game and 12 hours before the others AND you were notified by Tree. Once you saw a problem a prudent man would have read the 2008 In Season thread also and/or looked to see if my other claims followed the rules. The FA post waiver pick up rule was posted as recently as 10 days ago in the 2008 Waiver Claims thread.
That's why I started bitching....it became more personal once I saw that you and I were up against each other this w/e. You made the illegal grab...which is a wrong whether discoved an hour after you made the illegal pick or not discovered until after the games are played. An illegal pick up is always an illegal pick up no matter when someone discovers the move.
Either we have rules or we don't. I don't remember rules being interpreted on whether or not damage, mistake, forgot, error of judgement applied...only whether the action is allowed by rules. Akin to baseball, the hit ball is fair or foul under the rules.
If the league thinks the action is not a problem, I am in step. I've already made the stupid "I quit" remark, and sheepishly apologized after I recognized who made the mistake (btw...I made the same mistake of claiming FA early..it is the reason I volunteered to be the Waiver Whore/Master).
You and I have been friends a long time and I don't see this changing that. That's what I have learned about POLI leagues. The POLI rules are different from every other league I've been in and as such are a continuous opportunity to screw up/break the rule. But it is a league among gentleman...gentlemen who argue/quibble with each other daily..hell..by the minute, not to mention name calling etc. But at the end of the day we value each other and wish each other well and to be out of harms way.
In the POLI leagues, we have in the past valued the rules, and we still wish each other well.

My vote is to disallow the points produced by the player picked up illegally.
Obniously there is nothing personal involved here, as I've played with wiggs in numerous leagues over the years and respect his abilities and committment.
Hopefully he will reconsider his leaving the league.

2 things about this, 1) if you have noticed, my apology came in the other thread. I never even saw this thread until I just recieved an email about. Tree sent me a message, late sat or early sunday and said your weddle pick up was illegal please fix it. I immediately did so and apologized about it. No one mentioned the Garcia thing to me. As I am sure it was for everyone, I was terribly busy this weekend starting Thursday night and continuing through sunday night. I am not going to get into it now, but lets just say it was family and more important than fantasy sports. There was at no point intent to pull a fast one on anyone. If I would have seen it i would have probably picked up, JaMarcus Russell, or Flacco in his place. I know for sure I dont pick up Senaca Wallace or Kerry Collins. I guess it doesnt matter what happens, I made a mistake and I really dont have any other defense for this except I made a mistake.
2) Tax, this will not affect our friendship so dont worry about that.

It does seem surpassing strange to not bring up Garcia until after the fact and for everyone to go off about Weddle of all people all week long.
Too bad this issue actually made a difference. I lean towards not disallowing the points but since I have studiously avoided commish duties, I'm not leaning too hard.
I guess we need a policeman to catch and rule on this sorta stuff at least 24 hrs before the games begin.

Obviously wiggs broke the rule and there should be a consequence; I'm not convinced that that menas he should get a zero in the QB slot for the week though. I'm for an equitable solution for an innocent mistake. Maybe wiggs should get Garcia's points removed but be given the average score of the remaining starting QB's from Sunday? I dunno. Was wiggs emailed once the Garcia thing was discovered?
Taxman - when you say that you wer "looking for Garcia" and noticed him gone - do you mean that you were going to pick him up?
I am one who was largely responsible for the current waiver process that we have in this league. I was wrong to support this overly work intensive and time-consuming process as it has, over the years, created more problems than the ones I believed it would solve. It been a pain in the ass. I'd be for discontinuing it and just following the Yahoo! default waiver rules if I had had it to do over again. Sorry.

I'm new to these rules, but it looks like wiggs messed up and may not have gotten Garcia if he had waited for the waiver period to end. Including to his opponent Taxman. It's unfortunate that it was found out too late for him to get another QB. I would have to say no points for Garcia last week. If I had not gotten Schaub on waivers I would have been interested in Garcia.
Good luck on your surgery Mr. Tree. I bet it's the left shoulder because I've noticed you have been leaning left all these years. Or how about this one: .....you've been favoring the left side all these years.

MBJ...YEAH. `I started him in my RIBC #2 league. wiggs is in that league and can confirm. I also play in three other yahoo leagues and started him in two of those. I grabbed Johnson in the waiver draft, but correctly figured that a beleaguered Seattle defense on the road would be less onerous than a 40 year old Johnson against a scout team.
None of that matters..the point is "Poli rule for at least two years is no FA pick up until after 10 PM EST. End of story. Is the ball fair or foul..what do the rules establish.
If it is OK now...then it will forever be OK in the future. Do we want rule or Chaos. Choose and/or forever hold your tounge.

It was probably created since people have until Wed at 10pm to make a pickup. That way if anyone is picked up then it would be someone who was claimed. Making it easier to check if it was done correctly. That sounded so much better in my head.

I honestly never saw this post here until today when i got an email. I just dont play in any other league that once waiver claims have cleared you still need to wait 24 hours to make a pick up of someone who wasnt claimed.

I believe Tree is still acting commish. For the sake of expediency and in respect to Tax and wiggs, we need to either vote immediately or have Tree make a final decision as to Garcia's eleigibility last Sunday.
Although I don't see the point in voting after the fact on an exisiting rule.

Garcia was defintely an illegal pick-up and as such his points can't count for wiggs. It bothers me though, that wiggs would get a zero at QB, when he could have replaced Garcia with almost any starting QB and still won the week. If someone had given him actual notice by emailing him before the fact, I'd feel differently.

Although I don't see the point in voting after the fact on an exisiting rule.
It wouldn't be a vote on the rule; it would be a vote on the disposition of this situation caused be a violation of the rule.
I'd say the ballot would have 3 choices:
1. wiggs get zero points at QB last week.
2. wiggs gets Garcia's points from last week.
3. wiggs gets the some points at QB based upon some formula using the remaining QB he could have picked had he known of his mistake.

Apparently..it is when team generates points..that matters most. Current 2nd and 3rd place teams have the 8th and 9th highest points team. The object for me has been to get into the top 6 for the Poli Playoff brackets. So far PV, you are smack in the middle of that chase, but still subject to the will of the "football gods".
The wk 7 Garcia mess demonstrates how little control we have over the "football god of destiny". Hrrrmph..the pagan side of me has taken over. Must be near halloween.

Definition of parity: "Poli football"
Two games left in Poli regular season to determine which 6 teams make play off tournament. 10 teams are within two games of first place. 5 teams at 7-4, 3 teams 1 game back at 6-5 and 2 teams 2 games back at 5-6. According to yahoo rules, tiebreaks are in order: winning %, then Total Points, then week 13 points.

So I didn't know the final result until late last night after an exhausting 10 hour drive. B7 won with defense, Harrison and Willis getting 30+ points. I needed my Chargers, Rivers and Gates, to step up, but, like the team this year, they let me down.

Good luck to you too, B7!
You've been an asset to the league, and it will be a shame to see you knocked so early from the playoffs.

Good luck coach Baldwin. I don't think I can count on Ronnie Brown to score 5 TD's again. I'll have to find some points somewhere else.

Tho I don't have stattracker, it looks pretty conclusively that I have to join other noteworthies in taking an early exit. Saving your 2nd lowest game of the year for the playoffs is a recipe for disaster. I'll have to figure out a cure for the Romo fade every year if I intend to keep TO.
That was some nasty DB strategy there, B7. Nice job. Win it for the gipper.

Hey Baldwin -
You dropped Brandon Lloyd illegally, according to Jubal.
Just a heads-up in case one of the finalists wants Bell.

Baldwin needs to drop Bell. Nothing's been hurt, but, AFAIK, he was picked up contrary to our rules.
Next year when someone does it, but picks up someone who matters, I don't want to have to hear any BS about how a precedent was set when Baldwin kept Worthless Bell.

Bah.
I've won the much more challenging and much less luck-dependent baseball league two years running.
Considering how my players played these last two weeks, my guess is, though I haven't verified, that if I was around to set my lineup against B7, instead of up in the national forest with my wife and boy, cutting down a tree and cooking weenies and marshmellows, I would have gotten Lucky-Pierre in against him and won this league going away.
So I guess my failing is focusing on my family more than the league "conservatives". So be it.

Thanks a lot guys. I was hoping to just make the playoffs, and then I figure anyone has a chance. You know its your year:
When you need your RB to score three TD's on Sunday night in the finals.......and he does. Including one in OT.
When your DB runs a kickoff back for a TD and you win your semifinal by 7 points. Sorry Coach Baldwin.
When you bench Kurt Warner in the finals and pickup the SF QB and start him.....and it actually works out.
When your QB and RB both score two TD's in separate games with less than 4:04 left in the game.
When you win your playoffs by 32 points........for all 3 rounds.
Cinderella story. Thanks to PV for the invite, Taxman for doing the waivers, and everyone else for keeping up with their teams. Hope to be back next year.

Football has always been my weakest sport for a lot of reasons (short season, lack of consistent production from even very good players, etc). Last year I lost pretty much every close match I was involved in, plus having both my defensive keepers go out before the season, and there is really no incentive anymore for me.

wow. Stat Tracker is free this year...and there are some other nifty features as well.
other changes include - FINALLY - adding LBs to the IDP...
and, something really cool...
• Free Agent Acquisition Budgets (FAAB). If you'd rather be at the mercy of the waiver queue, that remains an option. But if you'd prefer to actively bid against other owners for the right to acquire, say, Andre Brown(notes) in Week 3, then you're in luck. Yahoo! Football '09 is fully FAAB compliant. (Pictured right). The highest bidder wins the player. Management of FAAB resources is tricky, but that's a subject for a later feature.
i think this is a feature we should explore, as the waiver wire exploitation has long been a huge complaint in this league...
