Subject: Thread Housecleaning

In an effort to try to speed up the forum server response times, I just deleted about 1000 threads from this forum.

Previously, there were more than 3000 threads that were in current inventory, and everytime someone tried to access the Political Forum page, the server was sorting and processing info on all 3000+ of those threads each time.

Many times, the response was still almost instantaneous. But recently, forum responsiveness has been lagging, and this forum seemed to be one of the biggest bottlenecks.

So, any thread that has not had a new post in the past year has been moved to thread purgatory. That leaves a little over 300 threads to review, rather than 3000. If you use any of the thread filters to try to find an old thread, it will not consider any of those older 2700 threads.

However, they are not completely gone. If you use this URL:
http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/finddel.pl?pol

You'll get a listing (by title only) of all of the older threads from this forum. They will be in no discernable order, and will show only the thread title. You can click on any link to see the underlying thread. But none of the filters will work on those threads. You'll need to use the "find" feature of your browser to do the dirty work.

I know that this forum is one that tends to have occasions to look for an older thread, and I hope that by keeping all threads that have been active within a year, I've kept 99% of the useful ones. If there is enough interest, I can develop a more versatile means to screen through those in purgatory. But at this point, I think the need to speed up forum responsiveness trumps the benefits of having a full inventory of dormant threads. And I'm hoping this housekeeping will help in accomplishing the former.

If there is a thread in purgatory that anyone would like to reactivate, just send me an email and I can easily copy it back.

Thank you for the note and also for saving the old threads. There are times when it's useful to be able to go back and see them.

In particular there are league rules for the Guru Political baseball league buried in some old threads that we occasionally take a look at.

Thanks for the heads up.

If you're able to find the time and it doesn't compromise your resources too much, I'd very much appreciate a means to filter through the content of the threads in purgatory.

I don't post much at the forum any more but there's a lot of research that I and others have done over the years in those threads that I'd really like to be able find. Unfortunately, my method for retrieving old material is to recall a few distinctive phrases to search for in your forum filter.

I regret not keeping better tabs on work that I do value and I fear that I might be the only one so concerned with being able to pull up that stuff. If that's the case, I can't see you sacrificing the time to accomodate just one person, so hopefully there are others who feel the same and will speak up.

I do the same stuff of course, searching. I would be leary of imposing on Dave however. I am sure he will be fair about it.

Sorry - somehow I missed this request back in September. I'm sure I can figure out something relatively painless. Let me give it some thought.

Thanks for the BUTT.

Thanks Guru. Really I only butted it because it had fallen to the 3rd page. I'm not sure how much trouble you should go to since no one else seemed as interested as me.

This should work, and should also assist in reviewing and screening deleted threads on any basis.

The usual URL for viewing the list of threads includes "view.pl". If you want to review deleted threads, replace that with "viewd.pl". This will allow you to see all deleted threads, listed in the same presentation format. From that page, you can view any thread, or use the usual filters at the bottom of the page.

For example, to see the delete threads from the Politics forum, use this URL:
http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/viewd.pl?board=pol

From that page, I think any of the filters will work on the universe of deleted threads. (Let me know if that is not the case.)

Again, if you find a thread that you would like to reactivate, just send me an email. It's a very simple process for me to recover any thread.

Thank you for providing a bin instead of dumping them. It's beyond the call of duty and very generous!

Boldwin is absolutely correct in post 9. That said, at the risk of making a complete pest of myself (as opposed to the partial pest I'm sure that I already am) I've found the gall to make one last request -- that perhaps you could add the archive link in post 7 to your poli-forum pulldown in the upper right?

First time I noticed the suggestion in post 10, with is a good one - and has now been implemented.

Guru,

Is the forum being re-indexed? When I try to search for text, it comes up with no posts found even for common words. Also, the link to "Review deleted threads" is coming up with an error message. Are they still off-line?

I haven't mothballed any threads since 2008, but apparently some regulars had forgotten about the ability to access the archives.

Is there any chance the thread 'NOT FLAT' still exists in any form? I couldn't find it in the vault. Can't retrieve it in those way-back-machine sites.

Destroying that thread was as bad as Bamiyan.

I don't see it. I also don't recall intentionally destroying it.

Maybe if I do Skynet a solid, it'll retrieve it for me.
