Subject: 2009 Baseball draft discussion thread

  Posted by: Seattle Zen - [17252811] Mon, Mar 09, 2009, 00:02

I'm going to be on the road Monday and Tuesday. Hopefully the hotel I'm stay at will have internet access. I will bring my lists with me, though, truth is, I'm sure I'll get my top guys cause y'all are a bunch of baseball morons! HA

I've asked Biliruben to call me when it is my turn, however, he may be indisposed at times. So I am going to leave my wife's cell phone number here so someone could call and bring me up to speed, then I'll tell them who the next NL or AL MVP will be. Here's the number Three 60- Five 62-117Two.

I'll be back Tuesday night, afterwhich I can be reached at TwoOh6-Six32-924Oh.

I'm going to be pretty busy tomorrow, but I vaguely recall giving away my first rounder unnecessarily last year, just to give you guys some small hope of competing. Of course, I don't think I had my first rounder last year either. I usually just waste in on Eric Hinske, so I'm better off without it.

My I-phone gives me a small jolt of affection whenever someone emails me, so that should be sufficient to get my attention if I don't have time to keep my finger on the pulse of the draft. My new job keeps me pretty busy.

There's also the que available feature on Kafenated for everyone. If it's close to your turn, you like your next few picks and you are going to be busy, you can allow the league to pick the first person available in your que. They only see the first pick.

This is a great way to keep the draft moving.

Just a general reminder to the league.

I may have screwed up with my prospects and I want to be fair. Trying to remember this from last year because it happened then also.

I announced Maybin as my last pic and kept 3 prospects besides him. Is that OK? or does he have to be one of the three and then when he moves to my team with the last pick I only have 2 players as prospects going into the final round?

If I have one too many let me know and I can drop someone.

Since Maybin is not over the limit, this appears to be fine.

If he was over the prospect limit you'd have to declare him or put him back in the pool.

Baldwin: It will get extremely difficult to put in the keepers and start the OTC draft in any kind of timely manner if you aren't signup up on OTC as soon as possible. In reality, the cutoff will have to be about noon or so my time in order to make it happen. I don't mind losing the $10 if we end up scrapping the OTC drafting but it is a big inconvenience to the other managers when you signup at the last minute, and a huge hassle to me as well.

We need the OTC it is an important tool for leaving ques open, especially for me being in Dubai and sleeping while you are drafting.

I would go so far as asking to postpone the draft until Baldwin gets his act together and we get it up and running because it is that valuable a tool.

Baldwin PD has been asking you for weeks to get it together. This really is unreasonable of you, please get it together Brah. (That's southern for Bro)

i'm not so sure about the way the Maybin pick is being handled.

i don't believe it's been done this way before, although if it has, we should correct it for next year.

i am pretty certain myself - or someone else - would have spoken up previously on it.

i'm going to research it further, but as it currently stands, this basically gives Nerve FOUR prospect keepers, with an essential "hold" on one of those four for the entire draft.

it is my recollection that prospects have been added as final KEEPERS, not final draft picks, or, as the first draft pick.

but, again, i could be wrong. still, this doesn't seem right or fair at all.

as a follow up:

i believe post 187 in this thread shows what we've done here before....

with a final draft pick, SZ called up Phil Hughes from his prospect keeper list - thusly giving him more room on his prospect keeper list when the prospect draft came along.

so, that looks to be it.

thusly, i do believe Nerve has to choose THREE keepers from his list of four.

Tree there is no way to tell from 187 if Zen had 3 other keepers, or 3 others he liked.

I am not saying you are wrong, but I don't think 187 is conclusive.

For some reason I do think this has come up before which is why I brought it up even though no one had complained about my keeper list.

I do think Trees explanation makes sense.

I will only keep 3 prospects,

Colby Rasmus, OF

Mike Moustakes, 3B

Cameron Maybin, OF

I will make a decision before the end of draft whether to use last pick for Maybin therefore giving me an extra prospect pick during that portion of the draft.

More then likely, unless he breaks a leg during spring training, I will.

No, this is what I complained about when it was first done. It essentially gives someone an extra keeper. But I believe it was you, Tree, who argued so vociferously in the "rule's" defense. I was poo-pooed and shouted down, and lost the argument.

The only difference here is that we are doing it all at once because the prospect draft is abutting the regular draft, instead of two steps, so it's more bloody obvious how an extra keeper is being kept.

But Billi I just posted I would drop the fourth player. I am only keeping 3 prospects.

We've always been allowed to put a prospect on our team with our last draft pic and then get an additional prospect pic. We've done that many times.

Why would anyone bring up a prospect with your last draft pic if it wasn't to free up a prospect draft slot? It wouldn't make any sense. It would be more beneficial to just wait until the season started in case of injury.

Before it had been you can keep 3 and then calling up one from the list as your last draft pick, giving you and extra spot to draft in the prospect round, not being able to keep an extra prospect.

As you pointed out last year Bili...

From Draft discussion thread 1...

I don't get to reuse that slot in this yars draft anyway as much as I'd like to. - Boldwin

why wouldn't you, you called him up before the prospect draft started?

That has always opened a slot...as long as you did it before the first prospect draft pick.

This year I think if you did it by Thursday though you should be OK since that's when the commish said the draft would start and MITH just decided to pick early. - Nerveclinic

How did Nerve change his mind 180 degrees like this? I was ok with the idea till he got me thinkin I was good to go.

Hmm... You may have a case if you are saying you brought him up before what was supposed to be the stated start of the prospect draft. Did you do that?

It's always been the rule.

There's a whole discussion here link on whether or not Baldwin would get an extra pick because he didn't call the player up until the morning of the draft.

I had no idea if I needed to trade up to pick even earlier to get him or if I could afford to trade down and he'd still be there. All I knew was that I wanted him. If I had managed to pick up another 1'st rounder I'd have snagged Tulowitski as well but you can't have them all.

Liriano's story is a litle too similar to Kerry Wood for my comfort but every sign I see tells me he is far ahead of the batters he faces even without going to the slider so much. If he recovers a couple mph on his fastball, even better than the tail end of last year then.

Up front I didn't like the script, Richard Kelly was not supportive
and I didn't like the Director.
I didn't see the project as worthy of being associated with
Donnie Darko (or with Newmarket Films).

However as a business venture it seemed like a safe bet. The
budget was low enough that we we would not need to release it
theatrically to recoup. World wide DVD sales would have put us
in profit.
So I agreed to put up the production money subject to being
able to take Newmarket Films and my name off the final film.

Yeah, as RSF quoted, I was sure hoping for him to drop just two more spots...

I also agree that Liriano sure has star potential, and that's not just the Twins fan in me talking.

Guess who is excited Javy Vazquez came to town? Did he move next door, AF? Has he come over to borrow your tools? I was hoping to draft him... with the pick you traded me, but wow, he went off the board fast.

My last years roster had too many players in the top 100 and too few in the top twenty. There has been 4 of my non keepers drafted in the first round: Broxton, Tulowski, Atkins and I redrafted Lidge.

The worst part is that I was unable to package several of my keepers and/or droppers to acquire a stud.

life is so unfair

Difference being that Pujols, Wright and Reyes were three of my top 5 rated players. According to my rankings (takes into account reliability/last three yrs) my top three players were Halliday @ 4th, Sizemore/Ervin Santana @ 18th. Top hitters seem to be more stable than top pitchers. Guess we will see. This system got me a last place in RIBC last year about 80 points behind Coldwater.

But kudos, Tree. Like me, I'm sure you enjoyed populating our competitors rosters.

I think I can beat that...

I had the first 2 picks in the draft taken, Mauer and Mclouth and I did manage to trade Joe Nathan and King Felix (both likely first rounders) for draft picks.

I offered Baldwin McLouth and Mauer (Did I mention they were the first 2 picks of the draft?) as a package for his first round draft pick but he declined. Of course he did well with the Liriano pick.

Had Baldwin taken the trade I would have taken Davis with my first pick leaving PD holding a bag of dust.

I am not happy with my first round pic in that virtually everyone taken before him was on my draft sheet ahead of him. Are we all using the same cheat sheet?

A couple people in front of me are not posting their draft picks here (Just using otc) and with all the trades I couldn't make heads or tails of what's what.

I also have no idea who a team that choose to call himself BJClinton0 is. Cute in a grade school kind of way (and very last millenium) but makes it difficult to know who is who.

So please go back and add your draft picks to the draft thread.

I made the same mistake first round and Bili caught it for me.

Even if he had not made the Granderson/Young trade, your trade isn't a good fit for Baldy as he has Wieters. However, with Mauer going for an MRI on his back, coming off kidney surgery this winter, maybe C1NRB ought to draft a back up as well. As a Twin fan, I hope he won't be needed.

I have made everyone a designated picker on Kafe. I've created a one-man Q, sure hope he is around. If not, please give me a call so I can cry.

On Kafe, it says that Baldwin had B7's second round pick and it was he was drafted Figgins. Is that correct? I didn't think Baldy had that pick.

In fact if there was a draft pick entered on the thread that wasn't put into OTC I wouldn't know it was my turn.

maybe set a couple more people to pick for you just in case Punk doesn't notice.

You can set it up so only the first pick is shown.

Is it time to ask what we can do to speed things up?

Is it too much to ask that if someone is going to be away for a few hours they leave a que so we can get this moving?

I had the same feeling, Baldwin. Except I didn't leave a q. At 3 am I had 4 solid pitchers in mind, and 6 picks until I was up.

I was forced to take a SS.

BILI...I'm confused. Shouldn't the most recent post you picked for Pauncho be 3.07

No - PD's Wang is 3.07 (not inches, feet. And yes, in a porno sort of way).

He just left Pauncho's chad hanging before inserting his wang.

No it wasn't a Database issue. Bili picked Han on here, but someone used OTC and picked someone else on his queue. When AF made the pick of Han on OTC he hadn't been choses yet, i'm assuming it was typed in when PD was making the change so the system didn't look and see if he was taken since he wasn't when AF put the name in.

which begs the question - why exactly are we using BOTH the board and kafenatid still?

if i recollect, the original argument was to keep the drafts archived on the boards.

now however, those archives are more and more difficult to access, while the archived drafts on kafenatid are literally a click away.

using both just seems like a time-waster, and obviously, lends for confusion.

If we just using Kafinatid, I would have gotten a player I didn't want last night. If we weren't using it at all, there wouldn't have been any confusion at all. Kafinatid is was makes things confusing (as well as filling my email with useful messages and annoying me while getting my drink on).

I have rarely found it useful, and usually found it annoying and confusing.

you'd don't need a DRAFT thread in both. Kaf for the draft, the boards for the discussion.

i've used Kaf for about 30 drafts now, and sometimes, the active queue/oh, somebody picked for me issue pops up, and it is discussed on the rotoguru board for that league, and fixed.

never a problem.

there's just no need for a DRAFT thread on both.

i think it's been the kind of year where a lot of people are reaching.

there are a TON of sleeper picks that have gone too early. guys i am high on, but not willing to take in the first half of the draft, like Devine, Milledge, Cruz, Aviles, Span, and Dukes...and maybe even Sandoval, but with his C-eligibility, it's harder to ignore him.

not dissing any of the above players. i'm pretty sure that i have most of them on one team or another - i just think it was too early to take them.

then there are other guys - and i won't list them - that i think were terrible picks, because they could have been gotten 6 or 7 rounds later, IMHO...

Zen Let's get moving!

Punk Yeah cause the season is right around the corner...

Actually that's not the point Punk.

Do you know what the point is? Probably not, or you wouldn't take 5 hours for your pick and then just shrug it off.

The point is, the people drafting after you are checking in, to see if you've picked, because they don't want to be rude to the person after them, and it's really annoying to be chained to the computer waiting for your turn if you don't want to leave a que.

So the issue isn't "when the season starts" it's that most of us don't want to keep coming back to the computer every 15 minutes to see if the person in front of has picked yet.

Now there are 2 ways to solve it. One you can leave a que if you think you will be away for a while. Two, you can say "hey, I don't want to leave a que but I won't be picking for 5 hours so don't hang around waiting".

If everyday life gets in the way and you can't avoid holding up the draft without warning, it's at least nice to come back on and say "sorry guys, the dog ate my homework paper".

So you see, it has nothing to do with when the season starts.

8-}

No doubt, Tree.

It's just the nature of this league. 7 keepers is just a massive amount of talent to be able to transferring year to year, so if you want to have a shot of contending, you have to take chances.

So people like you and I, with a decent stable of 1st and 2nd-tier keeper talent can take the Derrick Lees and Jermaine Dyes, and not hurt ourselves too much long-term. People with really on 3-4 keeper level players have to take chances on to Devines and Spans, in the hope they turn into keeper material. They know that Dye will never be a keeper again, so why bother unless you think you can legitimately play for this year.

there are a TON of sleeper picks that have gone too early....Millege

OK well you are scratching your head so let me run my logic by you.

I took Milledge with the 162nd pick of the draft.

A keeper league draft.

Now the only way I know to analyze how "early" that is, aside from each of our opinions, would be to take a random look at cheat sheets.

Milledge picked 162

Rotowire 125

Rotoworld 106

ESPN 142

Yahoo Bigger Board 99

Those were honestly the only 4 I looked at.

Oh and did I mention this was a keeper league?

SO since my 162 pick was much later then any of the 4 above cheat sheets recommended, can we surmise it was "too early" or did I deduce someone like Tree thought Milledge was a"Sleeper" and might be close to grabbing him 57 slots LATER then Rotoworld suggested.

I actually didn't think Milledge was a "sleeper" until after getting him as late as the 162 pick of a draft. I was surprised he fell that far.

Anyway I'm not trying to win, I am just trying to get enough good players to use as trade bait for draft slots next year. 8:}

Five guys still without 2 closers. Is this just a wierd year for available closers or is our league turning over a new leaf on closer runs?

Last year I left the draft with one closer, my keeper Joe Nathan.

I finished saves in 4th place with 5 full time closers Nathan, Mike Gonzalez, Jensen Lewis, Salmon Torres and Chris Perez.

Why pay for something that will be handed out for free later?

I think this league over pays for saves personally.

I can only speak for myself. Gonzalez I put on the DL as a long shot.

Torres, Perez and Lewis spent a short time on my bench, I grabbed them close to the anointment. I also grabbed 10 other people and dropped them who never made it to the end game.

you cannot do what AF is proposing. it is against the rules.

we ultimately didn't allow Nerve to do it either.

he did not keep three prospects, PLUS name someone as his last round pick.

he ultimately had to keep three prospects, period.

what you are allowed to do is call up one of your THREE prospects for your last pick of the draft, thusly giving you an extra prospect slot for the prospect draft.

Watched a couple of shows with my wife, worked on my new Facebook group page (thanks, MITH, for joining), and otherwise kept busy.

Here's the thing on prospects & drafting: nerve posted three prospect keepers, plus his intention to draft another prospect in the regular draft. This has been done in years past as well. Without the precedent being set, I would say that it shouldn't be allowed, but we're like the Catholic Church: Some things exist simply because we've done it for some time rather than whether it is right or wrong.

I believe in the other discussion thread I suggested a rule be proposed to clarify this, either codifying the process or banning it. In the meantime the practice is allowed.

no. no. no. and again, no.

this has NEVER been done in the past.

i'm going to explain it again, for at least the third time. :o)

you get to name three prospect keepers. period. not three, plus announce you're going to draft one guy. THREE. 1.2.3. THREE.

Three is a magic number,
Yes it is, it's a magic number.
Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity
You get three as a magic number.

The past and the present and the future.
Faith and Hope and Charity,
The heart and the brain and the body
Give you three as a magic number.

It takes three legs to make a tri-pod
Or to make a table stand.
It takes three wheels to make a ve-hicle
Called a tricycle.

Every triangle has three corners,
Every triangle has three sides,
No more, no less.
You don't have to guess.
When it's three you can see
It's a magic number.

A man and a woman had a little baby,
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family,
And that's a magic number.

3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.
3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.
Multiply backwards from three times ten:

Three time ten is (30), three times nine is (27),
Three times eight is (24), three times seven is (21),
Three times six is (18), three times five is (15),
Three times four is twelve,
And three times three is nine, and three times two is six,
And three times one is three of course.

Now take the pattern once more:
Three! . . .3-6-9
Twelve! . . .12-15-18
Twenty-one!. . .21-24-27. . .30

Now multiply from 10 backwards:
Three time ten is (30 - Keep going), three times nine is (27),
Three times eight is (24), three times seven is (21),
Three times six is (18), three times five is (15),
Three times four is twelve,
And three times three is nine, and three times two is six,
And three times one...
What is it?!
Three!
Yeah, That's a magic number.

A man and a woman had a little baby.
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family.
That's a magic number.

ok. sorry. i really felt the need to drive that point home.

now, before the start of the PROSPECT draft, you can announce you are moving one of your THREE prospects up to your roster (or, presumably, two prospects, or all three if you want), and then you have open spots on your prospect roster for the prospect draft.

the part where the confusion comes from is that usually what people have done is announced they are calling up such and such prospect from their prospect keepers list, and they'll just use their last draft pick for that person.

then they have an "extra" spot on their prospect keeper list, so when the prospect draft starts, they can fill that slot.

Actually, I think you are right on this. Last year Zen did it, but he called up one of his three prospect keepers.

I think, in this case, nerve will have to drop one of his 4 prospects. Hopefully he'll keep Maybin--otherwise we'll see a real sh!tfest on the boards.

now, before the start of the PROSPECT draft, you can announce you are moving one of your THREE prospects up to your roster (or, presumably, two prospects, or all three if you want), and then you have open spots on your prospect roster for the prospect draft.

This is what we agreed to in a nut shell and I know because it's now affected me twice.

B-7 & alphabet...Welcome to my world. Bet your invite ommitted the standing rule:""we don't need no stinking rules".

'Twas omitted from mine as well. I think they just do it to Texicans for entertainment. I entered the fray several centuries ago, at least it seems more than just a season and 1/2. May not be any rules, but no shortage of opinions. It's a joy to watch things mesh themselves out in light of no rules. You see all these political activists are not registered to vote on proposed poli rules; or maybe they just don't care enough to vote, or, most likely, none can agree on the time of day.

btw, not a bad fantasy group

Don't blame Kafe Bili it's a machine. The delay revolved around a trade made minutes before a pick that involved human input and confusion.

I'm in the 25th round of a "normal" draft on Kafe in another league with Tree and PD and it's going without a hitch and is at round 24.

Wow, I have loved the picks this round. I think we'll look back on the draft and say there were more bargains in this round than any other.

The list of good players rapidly flying off the board got me concerned, so I made my proposal to MBJ and I am thrilled that I landed Milton. As the 19th player added to my team, I think it was a risk worth taking.

The word blond comes to mind.

It doesn't claim that Bili, you are just continuing to show how technologically challenged you are. It is showing the 9TH pick...18.09 but it has moved down to MBJ for the pick because Zen traded the spot to him.

I don't fear the new. I've used Krapstained several times now. It has it's uses.

I'm simply disappointed that people, including you Tree, tend to rely on it too much. This causes problems that outweigh it's modest usefulness. It also decreases anything other than autonomic response, making the draft bland and boring, and frankly more work than fun.

the reason you've waited longer for me - with one exception when i was nowhere near a computer - is because it's taking me a lot longer to pick someone. the majority of my picks have seen me at my computer, for over an hour at a time, going back and forth over who i want.

a queue won't help there.

My pick is still 7 away and then it would have to get all the way back around for a second pick.

Congratulations are in order for Biliruben as his alma mater just made its way to the Big Dance for the very first time!

The jewel of that part of New York just above PA, SUNY Binghampton is going to the Dance

I don't think they call themselves SUNY anymore.

I assumed MBJ wanted us to use his Q.

I may need to call my team the Janitors as I have so many guys batting clean-up. I like Mark Reynolds and think Nerve made a wise pick, but I think I'm liking the Kouz even more because I read he will be batting behind Adrian Gonzalez at clean up. Yes, the Pads' offense is anemic, but this Russian can CRUSH.

"Clean up in aisle four!"

55Ks in 61 innings. Fuentes with back problems means this guy (who already has closer stuff) has the potential to be the closer on a team that won 100 games last year.

As we wind down the draft, can we take a moment to celebrate what we have here?

This league started 5-6-7? years ago.

We have a fairly animated discussion during the draft. The fact we have liberals and conservatives and conspiracy disciples all competing and taking good natured jabs at each other...it's really a cool thing.

I joined a new league this year with Tree and PD (gurukeepers) I am very excited about the new challenge, and apprecate the opportunity, but go look at their draft thread, 1-2-3 posts a day, barely a grunt.

So a toast to everyone at the start of a new season.

I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on the political gurupie baseball league phenomenon.

Players are entered into Yahoo (Go to Player List, then sort by your team name). I spot-checked each roster but let me know if any errors crept in. Yahoo makes it really easy to enter offline results so I might have been too quick to add a player or two.

Will set up the prospect draft in just a bit. We moved through the regular draft a few days earlier than I expected--nice work, everyone.

I had to take Gordon Beckham simply to counter the possibility that by taking Tim Beckham last year, I could be haunted by the old, "you took the wrong Beckham" curse. Snipped that in the bud.

Baldwin - Even if you came to visit me accompanied by two Gumbas with bats would I agree to that preposterous "trade" offer.

There's a reason you have made about three trades in seven years.

Got back from the gym. Still had the old prospect thread open. Flipped to a second tab, saw zen had picked.

Looked through my study materials for 20minutes.

Came up with my pick, went to the still open thread. Did the search and saw he was free.

Updated the thread to enter my pick and low and behold Zen had just inked him. Had to go back to the drawing board.

Do I have the option of putting Cameron Maybin back onto my prospect list?

The season hasn't started. There's no advantage I've gained by moving him off and back on again.

I still only kept three prospects.

The only thing it did was give me one less pick in the draft.

Seriously the list is so picked through I would just assume take my two picks and hold maybin onto the list and I can't think of a reason that would be a problem.

The only reason I had to add him at the end of the draft is to free up a slot but if I now chose not to use the slot...

What say King Solomen?
