Yesterday, I got a collection notice from a company called Afni Inc. It was sent to my (correct) home address and stated that I had a past due account from Verizon New York (that's home telephone, not cell). I have never had an account with Verizon New York and definitely not with the number listed on the account. Obviously Afni is scamming me, but I want to make sure they can't actually do anything about it. I called Verizon in and the number in question has my last name as the account holder but not the first name. He wouldn't give me any other information since it was not a match.
Here is an article about a similar (and slightly funnier) scam from Afni. Obviously, I am not going to tip Afni off that I actually exist or that their letter reached any kind of destination. But do you think this can affect my credit? |
