Atlas Has Shrugged: West, Texas

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) acknowledged today that it only inspects plants like West Fertilizer on the basis of complaints. The most basic interpretation of that statement is that a mechanical issue has to be failing so badly that someone outside of the facility is able to notice and then file a complaint to the state agency.

For anyone in North Texas who travels south to Waco, San Antonio, and Austin, West was a sure-fire stopping point, due in large part to the the Czech Spot, a place to fill your gas tank, and more importantly, your belly.

West is near and dear to the hearts of many, and for most of us, after the initial "i hope everyone is ok" comments, the next thought was "is the Czech Stop ok??"

anyway. sometimes, government oversight is critical TO HUMAN SURVIVAL. and in the case of what happened at the West Fertilizer Plant, this looks to be an example of what happens when there isn't routine inspections and oversight.

I just hope that some of the money that is being raised for the victims in Boston can be shared with those in Texas, just doing a quick search there seems to be no charities set up for Texas victims while there seems to be tons for the boston ones.

one thing about Texas - as critical as people can be of this state - we definitely take care of our own when the chips are down.

i just loaded up one of those giant jeeps (wagoneer? i really don't know my jeeps) with goods being brought down. we had enough stuff to fill that vehicle twice, so my friend stephanie is going to make another run down there tomorrow.

additionally, the bar where i hang out collected over 400 dollars in just one night, which is also being brought down.

every bit helps.
