New season - new thread

Paducah follows up a solid 15-9 season with a very good recruiting class. The new Razorbacks:

6'10" Vince Griffey +2 (2/2 tie)

Vince was the best recruit in-conference, averaging 16.1 PPG/8.4 RPG/1.1 APG/1.0 SPG/1.2 TPG/1.7 BPG. Shot 51% from 2pt range, 39% from 3-land, and 71% at the line. A truly well-rounded big man who will definitely start all 4 years at PF/C.

6'10" Brendan Holmes +3 (1/1 tie)

Brendan comes to us from Tuscaloosa, and also carries a great stat line: 18.3/7.4/1.2/0.4/1.2/1.0. Shot 54% from inside the arc and 76% from the stripe. He will back up Marcum at center during exhibition, but will likely earn the starting job with a good exhibition season.

6'4" Roderick Penny +3 (clear)

Roderick was recruited from Indy, and he scared off most suitors by posting 2.5 TPG at the SG position. Looking at his attributes, I believe he'll be a better fit at SF and should keep those TOs down, and he's not that great a shooter anyway. Solid passer and defender, though, with 1.6 APG and 1.3 SPG. He'll be our bSF more than likely this season and will likely be a solid backup throughout his career.

Landing 2 of our 3 maxes, including 2 giants with talent, gives us a real lift heading into this season. I think we'll get back to the NTT since our conference looks like it will likely be weaker this coming season. Looks like a lot of Gurupie teams pulled in ranked classes, so I'm hoping that we'll see improvements this year across the board. Good luck.

Ohhh...ahh...I just noticed I pulled top ranked classes in both lists (a 10 and a 17)! Sweet. Second year in a row. Things are looking good for the future.

Last season was an interesting one for Reno. We started 10-2, were ranked in the mid twenties, and it looked like we were a lock for the NTT. Then the wheels came off.

We went 2-4 in the last week of the regular season and the conf. tournament. Of those for losses 3 were by 3 points or less, including an OT loss to San Diego (a Final Four team). In that OT loss San Diego made a 3pt to tie at the buzzer. Then got a 4pt play at the OT buzzer to be me by 1.

My guys recovered well and we dominated the PTT. I won each game by more than 10 pts, and finished the season 18-6 and ranked 19. I wonder what would've happened if I made the NTT.

My graduating seniors were the first class I ever recruited, so I kind of feel sentimental about losing them.

I lost my 4 year starting PG, Neil Zoeller (+7). Neil was first team all conference for 3 seasons, and on he 2nd team once. He will be missed, but I have 3 players who I think can pick up the slack w/o missing a beat.

I also lost Felipe Rodriguez (+2). He was another 4 year starter, but won't be missed at all. He started his first 2 years out of necessity, and the last 2 for his experience and defense.

My incoming class looks to be, OK. Not spectacular like my last 2, but they should fit in well with my sophmores and juniors.

Jeremy Hartman 6'9" (+4). Jeremy should be a better version of Felipe Rodriguez. He can't shoot and will play great defense and board. Jeremy was a 1/1 tie.

Terrance Glover 6'5" (+3). He was one of my original maxes and I had a clear lead on him the whole season. He played fantastic in all of my scrimmages, and looks like someone who could start his junior and senior season.

Jeff Cobb 6'5" (+2). Jeff also played really good in all of my scrimmages. I think his attributes came in a little worse than his stats and scrimmages expected. I'm looking for him to improve in a couple categories if I can get them enough practice time. Could be a starter junior or senior season.

My maxes that I missed were Lenard Lichtefeld and Edmund Herald. I'd love to hear about them if another gurupie got them.

I'd also like to hear about Mort Cobb. I was leading on him up until the last week when I forgot to recruit (I just did my maxes early in the week and left 39 RPEs and 2 visits). Yeah, I'm a moron.

Norfolk returns all 5 starters, and brings in a +5 class. only won one of my three hometown ties, but we should improve on last year's 7-17 mark. but there's really not alot to look forward to, other than hoping the recruiting gods will assist us a little more next season.

prediction: 10-14

Brought in a +6 class, but that includes two poors in my backup point guard, shooting and rebounding. Thought McGee would be a +4, came in at +3, and thought Jefferies would be at least a +3, came in at +2.

Have an incredible schedule. Kalamazoo (requested), Bangor, Lexington, Nashville and then Columbus in conference. Madison should also be improved. We'll see what it does to my power ranking.

Well, everyone is invited to Clifford Seaman's jersey retirement game next Wednesday in our home opener against RSF.
Seaman was drafted 3rd overall by the Knicks, its gonna be impossible to replace him, 26.6 career scoring average. 32.4 PPG his senior year, leading the nation. He took 568 this season, no one else took more than 175. So, he's gonna be severely missed. Its funny how my first recruit, a guy who I didn't even have to max all the way, when I didn't really know what the hell I was doing, turns out to be the best player I'll ever see.

Also lost another 4 year starter in Jodie Bailey (+5) he was always good for 10 pts, 8 boards a night as my center.

Finally lost the best -1 player EVER! Bennett's problem was no hands, seriously, he shot useing his feet, he was usually good for 3-4 turnovers a night. Bennett was enterred into my starting lineup last season when my team was struggling at 6-7. After putting him in, we ran off a 9-2 record, losing to KM twice, winning my last 8 in getting the PTT Title. So now I have a DTT Title and a PTT title! I'm getting there!

But, its time to move on.

San Jose welcomes in a +11 freshmen class, ranked by both publications. My only complaint is Toral getting Sharone Feger, since I needed a big guy, instead I got 3 very similar guys

all 3 are SF type guys, all 3 were Exc scouts, Good- shooters, all 3 shot 41%-44% from 3, so thats good.

Jay Effinger 6'7" (+5)
He was an original max and became a 0/0 as he committed to San Jose a few weeks ago. Good Shooter, Defense, Athlete and excellent rebounder, I may put him at PF, but probably SF.

Gaylen Smiley 6'6" (+4)
it was between me and KM for this San Jose High phenom. Second year in a row I've won the annual J-KM recruiting war. Last year Braxton Morton was the guy, and he had a terrible freshman year. Hopefully Gaylen Smiley (Jeff Garcia's special friend) will be more succesfull. At 6'6" Gayman can play anywhere from SF to PG, he's a good shooter, good hands, good rebounder (not so useful at G though) and a good athlete.

Jacques Rodriguez 6'7" (+2)
I see this French-Canadian-Mexican as a possible Bennett clone, with better hands, good shooter, go rebounder, fair everywhere else. He'll probably wind up being my backup PF or SF.

All in all, not really sure what to expect from these guys this year. Without Seaman, I now have a "team", with Seaman, it was Seaman shoot more, everyone else stay on the other side of the court.

My class ended up being +5, but I missed out on my top 3 recruits--one of them being Flying Pollack's Jeremy Hartman.

But I still landed 3 good players.
Terrence O'Neill--6'6 PG--Good Def and Hands.
Garth Tidwell--6'5 SG--Exc Shot, Good Def and Hands
Forest Singleton--7'2 C--Fair all around with good athl.

Tidwell was a huge surprise ratings wise. He was my 6th option and I won him with just 65 RPE. He was listed as Good shot and fair defense. Hopefully he plays to his actual ratings.

I didn't have a good recruiting class, mostly cause I was MIA during a lot of the year with work and what not, but I didn't lose a single starter. I still improved becuase I had horrible reserves as is. I did return Parker Head, who was League Freshmen of the year, I hope to get him more involved somehow. A 13-11 record isn't that bad for my team, I did land 4/5 starters on my Conf Team, the only starter not on was Cole Goff who was out most of the year with an injury. I hope to improve, as long as my starters stay healthy...

Independence finished 13-11 and should improve this year with a +14 incoming class (which may be flattering, they all have Exc INT)

Independence lacks size but its second +14 class means the future looks bright - too bad the coach is mediocre at best

Well, Hubert Elkin had a nice debut game for the Titanium Screws:

14 pts, 10 rbds, 3 blocks and 2 steals. (dreaming)I'll take that on a nightly basis!(/dreaming)

I moved my starting SF to PG (game had him placed there) and he responded with 7 dimes to 1 TO. Also added in a respectable 5 for 8 shooting for 12 points. The exhibition season should be interesting.

I haven't had a good recruiting class for so long I've forgotten how to gloat.

Here's how my +17 (WTF!), #2-ranked in both publications class came about.

I won a 5-man lottery for Sherone Fager (reg 5) (+6)

I was sole top on Jasper Vaught +6 (reg 5).

I was sole top on Jawan Weatherford +5 (conf 21)

All OOC. How did I do this? I don't remember. I remember conf 31 was crap and that I had to look OOC -- I looked for players who I thought would be under-bid-on for one reason or another -- e.g. multiple players on good teams, players who might be underrated because they weren't good shots -- leading to my next point.

However...IMO these players are not superstars, just very very solid players. All 3 were rated F+ in shooting and came in as F. Showing there's some work to be done there. They're going to need some shooters along side them.

But I will say this -- with any decent recruiting on my part, in 4 years we will have one heck of a defence, half-court team.

WooHoo! I get to play bmd twice on Wed night. Once in league 4 and the other in lg 14. To bad we both lost twice already in the NTT or this game could be more meaningful.

In my game against Vid, both teams had 19 turnovers each. Very sloppy! I know alot of coaches use the exh games to experiment with their freshmen, but I must add that is not the case with my team. My lineup is pretty much set. I might make slight adjustments to playing time but what you see is what your gonna get, barring injury of course.

My prediction for this season will be to one up last years record of 9-15 and finish 10-14.

He's the only one on the T75 list for me so I am pleasantly surprised. I will be losing a +10 class and all my height so this recruiting year is also critical for Branson.

The season is going great for Reno. Counting last season, and scrimmages we've won 20 in a row. I really, really like this team. I'm only starting one senior, who is probably my least important starter. I can't wait to see how the next 2 years play out.

Reno's maxes are all from Conference 27.

Chong Dong #34. I'm kind of surprised to see him this high on the list. I thought his 2.2 TO/game and being an hometowner for San Diego would scare people away. Guess not.

Javier Denison #42. Expected him to be higher. It's my annual run at a good shooting big man. So far I've lost them all. Bound to win one of these years, I guess that's why I keep doing it.

Gary Mefford #56. Shocked to see him on here. I think he's the 5th or 6th best guy in 27. I recruited him to stay away from the big lottery. I'll probably drop him or Dong and take chance on a guy who isn't on the Top 75 that I like.

Nigel Baldwin NR. Hometown kid. 6'8, plays solid defense and rebounds. Not an exciting player, but the kind you need to win a championship.

I've got a question for you guys. My league 16 team will have a starting five with a combined defensive rating of +8(3 E's and 2 G's) next season. My question is what kind of performance can I realistically expect from a group like this? I've never had a group this good on defense and I was just wondering.

It of course has to happen when Baton Rouge looking like the glory days of it did so long long long ago starts off 5-0 that injuries would again hurt them. This start is of course is in thanks to Carlos Lawhorn who is averagin 40+ pts/game his past 3 games, and has been a "star of the game" for all 3 of them.

Now much like Lawhorns idle "Vince Carter", Carlos has had injury after injury and this year is no exception, injuring himself last game against a rival and will most likely miss a week's action.

Coach Twarpy was quoted as saying "You just can't replace a guy like Lawhorn, he takes almost half our teams shots, and still maintains a 60% FG%, hopefully he will be back for our game against Naples."

Same thing happened to Reno. TWO of my starters were injured last game against Arch-rival Glendale.

Both Dalton Lester and Henry Wiser are doubtful for Monday's game. Lester will probably miss the week, which includes games against #71 and #7 in the power rankings.

I'm ranked #1 for probably the first and only time ever, and this happens. Mama-Mia.

Funny how the less I try, the better my teams get.

Lg 12 - 6-3 with losses to #1, #3, and #9 and 41.3 RPG. Then we go 2/2, 5/5 (stud), 0/0, 0/0.

Lg 4 - 6-0 with nobody really even close (including Mach and Beezer). I thought I missed recruited but it auto-recruited for me.

I have the toughest Schedule I have seen for myself ever. Including the preseason I have lost 5 games... The combined record of the opponents I have lost to is 36-4. I've played 4 7-1 teams and 1 8-0 team. I've kept most of the games close, but seriously this is ridiculous. I still have 3 games left against great teams too, 2 7-1 teams and the 8-0 team again from my division. Good for my PR but only if I win a few.

We've got 4 of the top 7 defensive teams in lg 4 right now with GDogg, Toral, BMD, and me. Wow.

TH is 11-1 right now, with a loss to rival Ames, who are still reaping the benefits of landing the best player in the history of SSB, and from out of conference in conference 1 no less. All that and he loves to talk the talk. They're #3 PR and we're #6.

I have a guy with 2.5 steals per game... and he's 7 feet tall.

The Carlos Lawhorn push for 35+ PPG continues, and Baton Rouge continues to get close wins...We probably will finish 2nd in our conference with a 12-3 record, and hopefully can pull out a win against Naples most likely.

Anyone up for an exhibition-preseason tournament? I am losing two starters and a backup big man, but should have a very good class coming in, even without Teague. All my other leads are 0/0.

7 Gurupie teams in the top 25 defenses in the league. 5 in the top 10. Impressive!!

I'd be up for a tournament. I'll be losing my number one scorer so I'm not sure how my guys will respond to that. Recruiting looks very promising. Last week, I had some extra scholarships so I decided to see if I could find a sleeper and I found one that has over 2 steals a game and puts up about 18 points. He wasn't recruited by anyone. It's kind of wierd to see that I only had 7 points on the guy and had the lead on him. At the least he will make a solid defender.

Paducah's up for some preseason tourney action if slots are available.

Looks like a lot of Gurupie power in the first round, and hopefully the usual round of inexplicable losses in the second round of tourneys won't hurt us too bad. Extra congrats to bluehen for actually winning a first round game as a favorite! I'd buy you a beer if I was near Connecticut.

We play D.

Last night we beat our main conf rivals, Eugene, by one point -- and moved ahead of gdogg for top D in the league. 48.3 PPG. Check it out.

You can bring it to us if you want, but we're gonna have to stuff it in your face. Sorry.

Coach Toral

Who brings the D? :) Sorry just had to bring that back up. ;) Funny thing is, I had no idea how good your team was before tonights game. I had made a defensive substitution for my last conference tourney game and forgot to change back. Looks like I may have to stick to this lineup through the NTT.

TH lost in the 2nd round, our 8th NTT championship bracket loss to a seed 6 or more seeds lower (among my four teams). And I've only made 14 NTTs!

My team is the 15th seeded Savannah. Indianapolis and I are the two lowest seeds(both 15) left in the NTT. We're facing a tough Green Bay squad, but I'm contemplating a lineup switch that could give us better matchups against them, but I'm not too thrilled about making lineup changes this late in the year. This is the furthest in the NTT I've gone in League 4, and the second consecutive year we've been in the big show after acquiring this team 4 seasons ago. Javier Fain will have to show that he belongs among the league's elite if we are to advance any further. Good luck to FP and all others throughout the rest of the year.

Recruiting looks ok, I think. All 4 of my maxes have low ties. I'm tied with 2 others on 2 maxes and 1 other person on the other 2 maxes. I only have one clear lead and if I can land my hometown recruit and one of my other ties I'll be in good shape. I won 2 ties last season and am hoping that my luck doesn't run completely out.

We're sitting at 10-10 for the year with a real good chance of finishing above 500. Fellow conf 31 foe, Kev, and I are both still alive in the RTT championship bracket and would love to have a chance to play him for the RTT Championship.

To all conf 31 teams. Our conf is #2 and looks to be tough for the next several seasons. I look forward to the challenge. Keep up the good job fellas!

Well, we bowed out of the NTT after being dominated on the boards by a strong Green Bay team. All of my teams will remain lower tier, as I don't put enough time into this game to make it worthwhile for me to pay. Recruiting for me looks to be a bit of a tossup, as I have a lot of ties and no real solid leads. We'll be returning 3 starters next year, and have some solid role players to fill in the gaps in case recruiting doesn't go well. As far as all conference goes, junior Javier Fain's 21.0 PPG 5.7 RPG were only good enough for second team conf. 13.

Thanks, bmd. I've been checking them every few days. Thanks for taking care of them. My first semester is over and so I think I can take over some of the teams. I'm going to have to drop a few of the teams, though. I'm definitely going to keep Gainesville and probably Reading, but as for the other 3, I think it's time to let go. Corpus Christi is going to be the toughest to give up because of the tremendous success of that team, but I really need to decide what's best and I just can't keep with all of them. So, if any gurupie wants Bangor (bmd, you are welcome to have them since you've been coaching them for the last 4 months) in Lg. 5, or Corpus Christi or Macon in Lg 17 let me know.

bmd, I'm going to be sending you and mauxfaux an email in the next few days letting you guys know what my plans are. Basically, if either of you two want any of the teams, you are welcome to them. You both have been a huge help and did an incredible job. I think you guys helped put my teams in four Final Fours while they were under your control. Anyway, thanks for the congrats and I'll be sending out an email soon.
