Might as well use the ASB as a breakpoint for the next discussion thread.
I finally have all of my horses healthy. Now we'll have to see whether they can pull this wreckage of a carriage out of the muck. |

Haha - maybe. But not really because Walker leaving Coors scares me and I hate having Phillies because it's double bad when they suck. Of course, it's better than being on the DL.

Fine. Then his injury history scares me. I've been assuming he would leave Coors since about 2002.

I will be on vacation between Aug. 15-22 and I doubt if I'll manage to get Internet connection during next week. Therefore, if anyone has been thinking about offering me a trade - please do so now.
Most of my team is tradeable (except Mr. Bonds and most likely Ortiz and Renteria) while I am looking for RBI/SLG/OBP/WHIP/ERA contributors. I can offer speed/runs (Crawford, J-Jones) as well as Saves (well, I don't have Gagne, but my closers get Saves here and there)

I know I'm 14th of 16. I know I'm 1-1-1-2 in R, RBI, ERA, and WHIP. But I need to make myself feel better, so I'll talk about my 6 other teams, which are obviously of no importance to you.

I just tallied up my pitching results for the season.
Here are the aggregate results for my top 8 pitching draft picks: IP: 498 W: 29 S: 34 K: 382 (.77/IP) ERA: 4.61 WHIP: 1.35
Of that group, Halladay is on the DL and probably won't have more than a few starts left, if any. Contreras has been OK of late. Guardado and Mantei are out for the year. Marte got aced out of the closer role by Takatsu. Valverde is still on the DL. Soriano is out for the year. Wakefield has been OK - and is still healthy, at least.
Here is the rest of my staff's totals (last 4 draftees plus F/A pickups): IP: 379 W: 29 S: 4 K: 287 (.77/IP) ERA: 3.96 WHIP: 1.35
Pavano and Mota have been my best two. These results also include Ponson, who was horrible while I held him.
Note to self: Next year, just draft hitters.

I've got a question. What happens if there is a tie in some of the average categories? It seems Yahoo only rounds to the hundredth and there a couple categories(mainly WHIP) which are tightly grouped together. Are we going to go by what Yahoo says or are we going to break the ties somehow? This is my only complaint with Yahoo, other than that they have a great free baseball game.

bmd, I doubt if there is a practical way to break such ties considering the roster changes and the benching of players... why bother?

Since Yahoo doesn't show the underlying numerator and denominator for ratios, there is no definitive way to break those ties. I have pretty good cumulative estimates of stats like ER, WH, AB, etc, but they are not definitive enough to use as a tiebreaker.
If there's a tie in a category, so be it.

I am interested in a good hitting outfielder who is strong in OBP/SLG and RBI. I don't need a speed guy.
Can give up a Milton or Clement level pitcher. Schilling could be had but of course the level of OF increases dramatically that I would expect in return.

I'll probably jinx myself, but I'm sooooooooooo happy that my team has made a great September run to requalify me for next year's RIBC. Timely pickups like Monroe and Buck (for his big 2-hr game), combined with HOT hitting from Jeter, Teixeira and Snow (all with OPS' over 1.000 in the last month) have vaulted me 10+ points in hitting since Sept. 1. My middle relievers have been just okay but at least they haven't cost me anything, and Schilling/El Duque/Maddux have been rock solid.
.....now watch me lose 10 points in the next week and fall to 9th! lol

Hoping I could quietly move up, so I've limited my posts. I said I wasn't going to finish with only 2 points for strikeouts and managed to make my way up to nine, while improving WHIP and wins. Too bad my hitting didn't hold up...or at least stay consistent.

We're about maxed out as well, as there are only 2-3 categories where I could possibly gain points and about 5-6 categories where I'm maintaining very small leads. It's gotten a lot more interesting the past week so hopefully my team can hold it's ground and somehow sneak past Peter's team.

I've moved up to 12th in the past few days, and it looks like I could finish anywhere from 10th-15th. After being mired in 15th for most of the season, any advancement is a nice recovery.
If only I could have drafted better closers than Guardado and Mantei/Valverde. I just looked back at my Mantei rationale, and see that I wrote "The two top available closers were Mantei and Francisco Cordero, based on my rankings..." Brilliant pick of Mantei, eh?
With my Guardado pick, I said "...the other closer alternatives were Isringhausen and Rhodes. Izzy was a close second, and I’d have taken him if Eddie had disappeared."
Had I taken Isringhausen and Cordero instead, I'd have 64 more saves now. That would put me near the top in saves, with an additional 13.5 ranking points. And 13.5 points would put me in 8th place right now - assuming my ERA and WHIP would be no worse than currently. (They'd probably be much better.)
A number of injuries put me in the hole early this year, but I think those two closer picks turned out to bring about the most damage.
What a moron...

Actually, Soriano made me look it up. I figured Guillen was cold, and better than Alomar, which he probably still is.
My other major concern was that if I picked somebody up, it might affect the top of the charts, which is something I don't especially care to do.

Why the hell not? I'm doing everything in my power to get as many points as I can, regardless of who I take them away from. I could stop trying to get wins so bmd could get another point, but I won't. What if the Reds said the same thing. Not a very good approach, IMO.

That's a fair point. But if I haven't checked my team in a week, and suddenly I pick up a guy just as one of the contenders is about to...
Heh, it doesn't matter much, I guess. I should have played better and been one of those contenders myself. That's all there is to it.

...if I haven't checked my team in a week, and suddenly I pick up a guy just as one of the contenders is about to...
So what? Are you saying that it is somehow unsporting to compete with the top teams for a free agent? I'd do it in a heartbeat, especially if I thought it would help my team pick up a point in some category. The team I'd be taking that point (or player) from is irrelevant.
I understand that when the best you can hope to attain is a second division finish, attention may wane. But I can't understand why you would be reluctant to make any competitive move because it might impact the top teams. That line of thinking would not even cross my mind. Why not play the role of spoiler, if the opportunity is there?

FWIW I've forsaken rotating pitchers the last week for K's so as to not risk ERA/WHIP -- especially since my league-leading win total is unlikely to be climaxed.

"We're #8! We're #8! We're #8!" After starting the season stuck in the 16 spot for a loooooooooooooong time, I'm quite pleased with my finish. I was definitely sweating it out watching the StatTracker all day yesterday! Major kudos to Peter N for his amazing finish and to bmd for giving him strong competition. If I had to do it all over again, I would change too many things to list. ;) For now, I'll be happy to have a chance to make those changes in next year's RIBC.

Grats Pete! Very good show.
I may have tied for 9th, but I feel like a winner. After falling from 2nd to 14th in less than a month, moving up to 9th and a point from 8th was incredible. I don't remember a year where injuries have affected me so much. For some reason I just could not overcome them this year. I decided that if I was going to gain, it had to start with SBs and that started turning things around a couple weeks ago. If I could have managed just .001 OBP or .001 SLGP...

I'll take 6th for sure after a very poorly executed pitching "strategy". Going "cheapie" closers definitely didn't help - although it might not have been that strategy per se as much as it was the execution. Thank goodness some of my hitters turned it up the last 2 months or it would've been RIBC AAA for me next year.
Congrats to Peter N. for a dominating year - and serious props to bmd for making it interesting and actually taking the lead once.
Can't wait to tweak my strategy for next year! Crossing names like Phillips, Herges and Koch off the list should go a long way! lol
