16.03 Aaron Rowand, OF, Phi Thought it would be a good time to pick up a third OF. Rowand was on the top of my list, but still did some research. Rowand scared me because of his style of play. He goes all out, so is an injury risk. But, if he stays healthy, he can put up good #’s. Capable of 20 HR’s, and 15 SB. In 2004, he .310, so he is capable of average also

16.04 Rich Aurelia MI SFG Like Wigginton--my pick in round 15--Aurelia serves to shore up my infield. He has eligibility at all four infield positions, and I look to him for some steady production, even though he's moved out of that hitter's park in Cincinatti. My concern. Nothing to do with Aurelia per se, but when will I ever get a reliever on this team?

16.05 Ivan Rodriguez C/1B, DET As mentioned in my 15.12 rationalization, the hitter I wanted was available here -- the 4 managers between me and the tudn all had their catchers! As there's no way that I-Rod will make it around the long turn, I have to take him here. I like that he'll play more than most catchers and that he he has Sheff in the lineup with him this year. I expect Leland to rest him a little more this year, but despite that, I think his raw numbers will be about the same and the percentages a little better -- 70/75/5/.340/.450

16.06 John Garland, SP, CWS 18 wins each of the last 2 years and i got him with the 256th pick? last year was alot more in line with his career averages than 2005, so im buying based on those numbers. at this point in the draft i wouldnt mind getting another year like last with the chance that he could drop the ratios back down to 2005 levels. i had gomes in my queue at this point but wanted to let him fall to my 17/18 pick

16.08 Mark DeRosa, 2B, 3B, OF, ChC Wow, two in a row targeted players. DeRosa parlayed a career year into a big contract with the free spending Cubbies. I like him more for his position flexibility more than anything else. No way do I think he’ll match last year’s lofty numbers. But the Cubs have beefed up their lineup nicely and I expect DeRosa’s numbers to be lower than last year’s, but better than the average of his previous years. I had Rich Aurilio as a plan B, but surprising to me, Aurilio went a few picks before DeRosa.

16.09 Scott Linebrink, RP, SD I decided to pick another setup man who puts up good numbers. I still have needs to fill these other positions: MI, OF, UTIL, and SP, but nobody jumped out as worth picking at these positions. Linebrink is strong in ERA, WHIP, and Ks. He will get a few wins and saves. Linebrink has a chance to end up as a closer if he gets traded, or Hoffman gets injured.

16.10 Mike Gonzalez, RP, ATL

Even though I would have drafted Wickman in the 9th round over Izzy, I still have little faith in Wickman’s ability to maintain the closer role over the course of the season. Since my Izzy pick, the reports about his health continue to be positive, so maybe that worked out the best anyway. My SP have higher than ideal ERA’s so a middle reliever with good ratios and the potential to become a closer seemed like a good pick. Gonzalez fits that bill. Bash Brothers have Wickman, and they pick after me. I suspect they might be looking for a little protection of their pick. Even though I really want Jonny Gomes here, I’ll take Gonzalez and hope Gomes survives to my next pick. Even if Gonzalez doesn’t get that many saves, he still has good value and helps my team’s pitching weaknesses.

16.15 Greg Maddox, SP, SD This pick has a lot of upside. Mattox is a seasoned SP that has career WHIP under.115 and ERA under 3.10. He will put up only .5K/inning (110 for the year), but the move to San Diego' PETCO Park should keep his WHIP/ERA numbers below the career average with an upside of 17 wins. Maddox makes a solid number #5 SP

16.16 Matt Kemp, OF, LAD

Kemp is a young kid with great power who doesn't even have a starting job. The Q made the pick. I put him in based upon some rosy projections. However, if I had writtten the rationale beforehand, I would have NOT picked him. "Undrafted" Eithier is listed as the starter right now and the dodgers signed two OF in the offseason. Pierre is obviously the starter, the other is old so maybe this works out for me, maybe not. Obviously mudge saw the same upside here, still would have rather picked a util player with a starting job, or one that could play mutltiple positions. At this point, it won't kill me, but I am unhappy. :)

17.01 Corey Hart, OF STL

Corey Hart is slated to bat fifth for the Cards. He will have planty of chances to drive in runs and if he can get the .850+ OPS he is projected to have, I will be very happy with my OF #4. There were no other offensive players in my Q and had either of these been taken, I would have gone to Capps, "undrafted" Betancourt, or "undrafted" Neshak. Here's hoping the two undrafteds remain that way.

17.02 Chad Orvella, SP, TB Kinda late in the draft to be thinking about saves, however Orvella has the heat/make up to close and the TB competition for closer is spotty. If he gets the closer's assignment he will pick up 25 saves, and his other numbers will be there no matter where he pitches in relief. Low WHIP @ 1.00, era @ 2.5 and 80 K.

17.07 Jonny Gomes, OF, TB After picking Podsednik in round 14, I knew that I needed to concentrate on filling the rest of my offensive starters with players who have high RBI and SLG potential. Gomes was hurt last year, but even in limited at bats he put up solid numbers. This spring he is healthy, in better shape, and is the perfect age range for a career like year. I’ve got great expectations for this pick, which probably only means that Gomes will crash and burn. There were a few other OF I considered here (Edmonds, Alou, Jacque Jones) but I thought that Gomes had the most potential

17.08 Randy Winn, OF, SF I still needed a 4th outfielder. Winn performed like an all-star the 2nd half of 2005 after being traded to SF from SEA. Last year he hurt his knee early in the season and never fully recovered. I believe his performance suffered because of this. I don't expect him to return 2005 form, but I do expect around 90r, 80rbi, 20sb, .360obp, .460slp. All solid numbers for someone taken at this point in the draft.

17.09 Matt Capps RP, Pitt

This pick is the result of my FUBAR pick of Torres in 12.08. I can’t believe I’m handcuffing a Pirate’s closer. Unfortunately, I feel like it’s a necessity or resign myself to chasing saves all year long and I hate doing that. I just hope I have the roster space and patience to see how this all plays out. Right after my Torres pick, I read somewhere that Torres does not pitch well unless he’s tired and that he’s probably better suited to set up Capps in the closer’s role.

At least I got my third targeted player in a row. Though how many other managers have had Capps in their Q since round 12;>( ?

17.11 Craig Monroe, OF, DET

Im alternating OF and SP to fill out my roster at this point, so it is time for an OF. Monroe makes a pretty decent OF4 IMO. I agonized over grabbing Gomes here, but thought that he may fall to me in the next round. I also looked at Capps as well with this pick. Jones and Victorino were also considerations, as well as a couple others that remain undrafted.

Im hoping that Monroe will start fast and cement his spot in the OF, since Detroit has alot of depth. His power numbers have been trending up every season while his ratios have all been trending down, so im not sure what to expect from him. I would love to see something in the neighborhood of 90/90/2/.320/.480.

17.12 Justin Duchsherer RP, OAK With just 5 picks before mine, I set up a 3 man queue to strengthen my OF -- Gomes, Monroe, & Winn. You guys didn't let any of them slide to me, so I had to start over. Other OFs at the top of the list were all injury risks (Alou), already injured (Edmonds & Griffey), or in line for a suspension (Matthews). I looked at SP and didn't find anyone special. although there was one that was more interesting than the others. I looked at RP and saw Duch still available. I had him least year and he didn't disappoint; giving my team a few extra Ks and Ss and keeping the ratios down. I wish I hadn't read that he was hurt the day after I selected him though. :-(

17.13, Chris Ianetta, C COL This selection does two things: (1) it frees up V. Martinez to go to 1st or to serve in my utility role, and (2) it bolsters my OBP, which has taken a hit recently. Ianetta is a patient hitter who could top the .380 OBP mark. And his slugging is solid too. But, as a youngster, he's a risk.

17.14 Cliff Lee, SP, Cle The well for surefire players is drying up. Now is the spots where we fill out our rosters with the last remaining starting spots and the bench. Going through the list of players that were not taken, I noticed that Cliff Lee was still there. Knowing he had an injury, I went and read up a bit on him. He will start the season on the DL, but maybe miss only a couple of starts. And most of the time, at the beginning of the season, SP get left on the bench. And if not injured, I am sure that he would have been gone already. He has averaged 15 wins in the last three seasons, and the Indians should be better this year also. Could turn out to be a great pic

18.05 Ted Lilly SP, LAD Yes, this was the SP that looked interesting last round. I know there's a league transistion, but getting a chance to face NL pitchers should improve his ratios a little and his Ks. Pitching for the Cubs could result in 6 wins or 16 wins -- I'm hoping for the latter!

With this pick, i hope that i got the other half of Clemens' season. i figure that by the end of the year, the 2 of them will out up a combined line that compares to the top tier of SP, at the cost of a 13th and 18th round pick. i was targeting Pedro from the 16th round, so when he came to me here, i really didnt consider anyone else. i finally felt that it was late enough to take the risk. getting garland in the 16th helped make this less of a risk.

I’m counting on Julio being traded before the start of the season to Boston, Florida, or SF, to become the closer and not only make me look like a genius, but lead me to the promised land of 16 points in the saves category. I read at least 15 player profiles before settling on Julio for this round. I was looking for the sleeper with the most upside for this pick. Interestingly enough (or not), Brad Wilkerson was the only other player on my short list. I figured he’d make it back to me, but alas, jkaye snarfed him up at 18.07, just before this pick.

18.10 Oliver Perez, SP, NYM This pick is all about Rick Peterson, pitching coach guru extraordinaire. As a Met fan, I have an additional reason for hoping this pick pans out, as they will need a strong performance from Perez this year if they expect to hang in the tough NL east. As my fifth starter, Perez has all the upside you could want. At this point in the draft there weren’t many hitters that stood out as must haves for my team. I have no positional needs outside of C and UT. I’ve decided to play the waiting game on catcher this year. I thought about a 5th outfielder, but there were still a few guys I liked and figured one would make it back to me next round. A few of the MR’s picked right before me would have been tempting, in particular Julio with all the trade rumors floating around him. So Perez, and Peterson by extension become my guys. Perez showed some good signs toward the end of last year and has pitched well enough in the spring to merit this pick. This could easily be my best pick of the draft if he returns to previous form, or the first player cut from my team if he gets roughed up in some early starts. But in the 18th round, those are the risks worth taking.

18.16 +19.01 Raphael Betancourt and Patrick Neshak, RP

The list of available starters did not excite me. Their ratios will hurt, their W/IP and K/IP are crappy so I decied to pick up 150 innings of relievers instead. This usually bites me in the ass as I don't pick the right ones. We'll see.

Betancourt has great ratios and if the braintrust in CLE can figure it out, he is their best option at closer as well.

Neshak had great ratios last year. While Nathan is uber safe, let's here it for a few vulture wins and saves.

Combined: 10 W, 15 saves, 140IP, 140K, sub 3.3/1.2

19.02 Shane Victorino, OF, PHI Victorino has some sex appeal in the 19th round. After Abreu's trade, he put up + .300 BA and scored 40 runs in the last two months. Added to the hoopla is working with Phi 1st base coach Davey Lopes to improve jumps when attempting steals. Realistically, the rule 5 OF should break 80 runs out of the #2 hole in the lineup, with 15 steals, 50 RBI, .380 OBP and a dissapointing SLUG under .400.

By now, my cheat sheets are long trashed and I’m just looking for a guy who will potentially play full time. I’ve waited so long for a catcher, I might as well hold out a little longer, especially when a guy like Blake is still on the board. He’s going to play 1st, 3rd, OF, or all of the above. 19.12 Jason Jennings SP, HOU I wanted badly for Iwomura to slide to me here, but jkaye squashed that dream. :-( Besides Akonoti, the rest of what I thought was a large queue of OFs and Ps was depleted as well. There's no other CI that I want to take at this point, so I looked to fill OF and P. In the OF, well, as I said earlier, the choices are injury prone, injured and about-to-be-suspended, so I went to the slab. I considered Sowers and Jennings and Lowry. I almost grabbed Sowers until I noticed his measly K rate. Between the other two, I chose Jason due to his healthy past and likelihood of getting 200 innings. That should translate to about 12-13 Ws and 150 Ks with optimistic ratios of 3.65 and 1.35.

19.13 Matt Lindstrom, RP, FLA Grasping at straws. My reliever corps is practically non-existent, and I felt I'd try to fake my way into respectibility by landing the guy I thought had the best chance of garnering more than 5 saves. Unlikely, but possible given the condition of the Marlin's pen. I looked also at Brian Wilson and Bill Bray (the latter of whom I took in the 22nd round). Lindstrom has the tools to do it: a good fastball, decent control. It's really a question of how patient the Marlins want to be.

This pick is one based on the assumption that he will be named closer for the Marlins. There is a competition for the job, and from what I read, he is the leading candidate. This could possibly be my fourth closer if he and Pineiro get their respective jobs. It would put me in a good position to get some help at any weak points I have via trades. We’ll have to wait and see.

20.04 Greg Zaun, C, TOR Even though he is getting along in years, Zaun is a steady producer and should allow me to move guys around more flexibly in the catching area as a support to Martinez and Ianetta. He should be good for 350-400 AB and a decent .360 OPS/.400 SLG.

20.05 Emil Brown OF,KC It was time to finally get my 4th OF. With one pick before mine, I was weighing the options between Brown and Matthews -- what were the chances that Matthews actually does draw a suspension? The RoboGuru helped me out by selecting Matthews so I no longer had to worry! I expect that Brown should be a full time OF this year. Anything close to his projections (80/80/10/.360/.460) would be music to my ears.

20.06 Gary Matthews Jr, OF, LAA i dont expect numbers like last year, but at this point in the draft, i had a spot on my bench with his name on it. he could end up being OF3 and i got him at OF5. or he could get suspended and dumped to the FA pool.

20.08 Brandon Inge, CI, Det Really just looking for some warm bodies at this point, though the ninth hitter in the Tigers could provide some help with some power. 20 HRs and 80 RBIs might help to offset his falling OBP.

20.10 Jason Varitek, C, BOS I decided to grab my catcher now rather than wait any later. There was still one other catcher I liked (Bard, taken a few rounds later) but I wasn’t sure if the teams drafting in the upper end might snag them both, as a few of those teams needed the position. V-tek is coming from a down year, and he is only getting older. But I like his chances to bounce back, and the Boston line-up is potent, so he should do well as long as he is healthy and not completely washed up. If he falters, then I’ll be chasing catchers on the waiver wire all season.

20.13 Brandon Wood, SS, LAA I do not know what to expect. Maybe with Figgins being out, he'll get some playing time. If not, he will probably be called up sometime this year.

20.15 Luiz Gonzalez, OF, LAD Gonzalez, will not put up many HR, but should hit enough doubles in Dodgerland to get his SLUG back over .400. Always a good OBP (.380) guy, Gonzalez will increase his R and RBI production to the @ 85 level hitting 5th in a talented Dodger lineup.

20.16 Ken Griffey, Jr., OF, CIN

Griffey will get hurt and miss time. Understatement. But in the 20th round, he seemes like a high reward kind of guy. In 2005 he got to 555 AB and posted a .950 OPS. At 37 can he do it again? Prolly not since he might start on the DL anyway with a wrist issue. Between he and Kemp, hopefully, I can get some good numbers in my util slot.
