Please use this thread for discussion during the prospect draft. Please refrain from discussing eligible draftees until after they are drafted.
Draft Link
Draft will start at Noon ET. Cards will administer the kickoff of the draft and even has the first pick, 12.01. If you have any commish issues at the start of the draft, please contact him. |

I am still looking to move into the first round and have young studs like Chris Davis and Mat Gamel to trade.
I also have Tosh's queue and I am totally unavailable from 7:00am PT through probably 6:00pm PT on Monday. I will need to forward Tosh's queue to someone. Anyone who doesn't pick before Tosh available to take it?

I should generally be around, and since I have no picks in this draft, I can take queues from anyone.

Great. I lost his queue. He said he was around with intermittent access so Tosh - send it again (I emailed him as well) and I'll copy Guru to pick for you.

You should have drafted Gamel as a prospect.

I would have had no chance to get Gamel where I am drafting, so I took matters into my own hands! :) With the LaPorta trade, Gamel is sure to be groomed for RF with Hart taking CF when they jettison Cameron. Man does that guy swing the stick!

Well that is certainly within your right. Just hate it for the guys drafting who might have wanted him.

Yeah, and isn't it a coincidence that the guy who got the idea to trim the field of good players in the draft is also the same guy that has no first round pick in said draft?

Just thinking out loud here and not a proposal...but what if we could come up with some sort of rule where a prospect-eligible player who is still in the minors couldn't be picked up before the prospect draft??? I mean there would have to have some things go into it as some guys would want to pick up a guy who is being called up but not officially up yet, etc.

Or that you'd have to hold a guy for longer. If we told Species he'd have to keep Gamel till Sept 1 or make him eligible, he might drop him.

There should be nothing wrong with speculative pickups. I did not pick up Gamel to block someone from getting him in the prospect draft. I picked up Gamel because he was mashing so incredibly well that he has a chance to get called up and have some serious value. I did the same thing with Chris Davis and now I have one of the top mashing prospects in baseball up smacking 5 HR's in 12 major league games.
With my season toast, why not spend a few of our precious roster spots on speculative pickups that can be used in the offseason to pick up value? That was my entire strategy for 2 years (2004/2005) and I turned a piece of crap team into a pretty decent core of keepers.
Of the players I have done this with, McPherson isn't prospect eligible, and Davis and Ramirez are both in the majors anyway, might hit 55 AB's to be ineligible and would have assuredly been picked up by others upon their callup.
I guess that's my way of saying I've only done this with Gamel as a speculative pickup because he could get called up the way he is mashing......not out of some vindictive pattern of prospect-eligible pickups designed to keep some top prospects from being available in the draft. At least not this year! lol 2005 you could have made that case though!

Species is definitely playing within the rules. I've have Reid Brignac and [undrafted] on my team this year even though they were far from major leaguers.
However, I think we should tweak the rules so that if you pick up a player who has not yet reached eligibility after June 1, that you are required to hold onto him until October 1. Because despite Species' ravings, Gamel is far from a major leaguer at this point, and I bet he gets dropped by August 1.
I will point out that Species has a full, complete, active roster at this point, so that's to his credit.

Here is some of the past discussion about modifying prospect rules and reasons why we should or shouldn't consider making changes. There was also lots of discussion during adoption of the prospects as well, but I don't have links to that. My current thinking is leave the rules as they stand.

According to the rules, when an illegal pick is made the draft is to continue and the 'corrected' pick can be remade at any time.
So that means that PD is on the clock for his next pick. AA can make another selection at any time, hopefully he is around and will make it soon.

OK Code is up. Even though we were incredibly slow today, it's fine. We're almost half way through the draft on the first day. I think we will get done tomorrow and then we can get the prospects checked and entered into the rules page and salarized hopefully by Wed., but def. before play starts on Thurs.

[80] Yeah. With pick 10 this year, I got the #1 guy in my queue. Odd.
Even though I had him listed first, I considered not taking Buster Posey (C, SF), since Geovany Soto seems like he wants to be a keeper for me next year. I rarely have a good catcher. Maybe I'll have two in a couple years.

Draft is over. Half of them were in the db and have been salarized. Remember to monitor your players. Please check the prospects in the rules to be sure I recorded them accurately.
When a ,od gets a chance, if you could clean up the draft thread, it would be appreciated.
