Subject: Dirty Dozen 2009 Keeper Declaration and Discussio
Posted by: Khahan
- [486552412] Sun, Jan 25, 2009, 18:43
Hey all,
I was a little slow getting things started this year. Normally we have keepers declared by Jan 31. Since I'm slow, we're going to push the keeper declaration date.
Keepers are due by Sunday, Feb 8 at 11:59pm (using the time stamp on the website here). That gives everybody 2 weeks to start making their decisions and handle anymore last minute trades.
Please list your keepers in their own post and state your team name and Keeper list so its easy for me to find. Do not put anything else in the post.
Any suggestions you want to rattle around, present here.
$10 league fees are due by April. GO handled last year and I'm hoping he is this year as well. I'll let him send out the contact info again.
Good luck in 2009.

I know I always say it... but if you put your 7 keepers, and then also list your leftovers, you may get a pick out of it without much effort.

I say that we move ahead with the keeper declaration ( i wish it was later too) bearing in mind why Khahan set it up this way. He has a lot of work to do on the back-end of things. If we vote on this, perhaps we can move it back for next year. We've had 2 weeks, so we are even footing for this year but moving forward maybe we can set a more aggressive date closer to Opening day?

I have signed us up for the draft on kafenatid. Registration will begin once I get the email to confirm everything.
A reminder about our rules:
Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN
You may only draft players listed in the Yahoo database. There is no holding of spots. If you draft a guy from kafenatid who is not in yahoo the draft goes on. I may not catch it right away and any players picked after that pick will stand and will not be available for you.
If a player gets added part way thru the Yahoo draft and 5 mins after you made your pick...tough. Poor timing, but we are all subject to the same potential. No do overs.
23 rounds less 7 keepers is 16 rounds of draft to go thru.
Players listed in my que are ineligible to be drafted (crap, that won't fly, will it?). Ok srike that rule.
Payments are due to GO. Please check your email for his contact info. (and GO, please send me the info again, I emptied my inbox w/out sorting that out into my Dirty Dozen folder).

Yahoo is not set up and running yet. But I still need everybody to get registered startig to tomorrow at Kafenatid.net
Draft order is reverse order of finish. Last season standings: . HOLT 110 2. Da Bomb Squad 103 3. GOs SecondCitySaints 82.5 4. Necro Butcher's Soul 82 5. Barilko Killer B's 71 6. Astade 68.5 7. Rev's Redbirds 54.5 8. Blue Hen 47 9. Perm Dudes 42.5 10. Khahan's Keepers 40.5 11. wiggs 39.5 12. Little Weasel 39
So little weasel picks first, then wiggs, me, etc.
Tree has plenty of time yet to post his keepers. Been in multiple leagus w/ him for a few years. No reason to think he needs reminders. :)
Also, one other aspect of finalizing keepers now: We now know who the player pool is so we can start planning draft strategies.

Didn't realize it was going to cause such a debate. I hadn't kept Abreu at the time I announced my keepers because he hadn't signed with anyone yet... figured I could make the change since the draft hasn't started yet and the season was still six weeks away, no biggie.
But if there's issues with it, that's cool- I'll just stick with Pierre instead.

I'm still in the process of entering keepers. Kafenatid does not differentiate this section from normal picks so you will continue to get notices. Do not pick until you get an email from me specifically saying the draft is open.

Based on a similar situation in another league (due only the circumstances around sheets), I have no problem with the switch.
however, this does not mean its a free-for-all. There is currently no other player listed as a keeper for anybody that I would consider this for so don't ask right now.

I think a simple idea would just put in a private request to the commish and based on his discretion can make the switch. But that guy needs to be really hurt, not just day-to-day or whatever. And if say that player actually does play a game by (the all star break? June 1st?) you should lose a pick the next year, like a 3rd rounder. Sheets would be the example this season.

I'm not sure I like this. Part of baseball strategy is drafting players who won't get hurt, because if they get hurt, it ruins your season. Sheets is projected to get 10-15 starts this season, according to what I'm looking at. That's hardly "season-ending" and it takes Edinson Volquez off the market, which I really don't like because I just traded a high pick for Billingsley.

Additionally, Wiggs isn't dropping Sheets due to injury; he's dropping him due to uncertainty. Sheets remains unsigned and a Type-A (draft pick-costing) free agent. He's in a terrible situation now, and an obvious non-keeper.
We had the deadline for a reason, and we were all subjected to it. I had no idea where Adam Dunn would wind up when I kept him.
At the very least, I feel we should put this to a league vote.

The announcement of his injury came after the keepers were declared- If you think about it keepers were due Feb 8 and the draft hasnt even started yet on the 26th. Why would we name keepers so early if we werent planning on starting the draft right away?
Like I said if this is a problem I wont do it.

Wrong BH- I am dropping him because he is having elbow surgery- and reports are saying he will at best get 10 starts this season.

For the record, I can see where Wiggs is coming from and I empathize with his situation. But I don't want any gray area here.
Khahan, do you know what day the draft is going to start? I am leaving tomorrow for four days and I want to know if I should bring my sheets. I remember last year we had started by this time, but the season is later this year.

Let's try to move the declaration due date much closer to the draft date in the future. This won't solve the problem this year, but cutting off transactions too early isn't in our best interest.

We did complete the draft on March 2nd last year, which seemed a bit early. I think this is a combination of using kafenatid + more keepers (less rounds) than previous years... so I'm wondering if we shouldn't move everything back anyway in the future. If it only takes 2-3 weeks to do the draft, why not shoot for it to finish say 10 days before the season starts. Which is even later this year (April 5th) because of the WBC. Maybe keepers due end of Feb, start the draft the first monday in March. Wiggs and I would gladly help enter the keepers on Kafenatid (and/or) the Yahoo site post draft if there is any time constraint issues for Khahan. We are both familiar with both sites (as is NY Studs I believe). We are all glad to help cause we all know its a pain. FYI - I spoke with Fred who mentioned he is revamping the Kafenatid OTC system and making lots of improvements, so expect it to be even better for next year.

oh... so what I was also trying to say was that if we close the gap on keeper declaration and start of the draft, we could eliminate the injury concerns. I support Wiggs switching out Sheets, cause its been nearly a month since declaration and they HOPING he'd be ready for August. Thats not good.

Just to add fun to this conversation, Sheets got news he would be out until August on February 5th. Our keepers were due Februaru 8th, three days after the news.
Sheets to Have Surgery
I am not against injury replacements, but a little work a couple of days before our deadline would have prevented this.

Yeah, that was my point in post 110. You could have gone back and changed them any of the 3 days prior to our deadline.
Wiggs, please understand that this is absolutely nothing against you at all. We are in many leagues together and have made many trades together. And you are a Sanchez brother.
I am just stating that point in post 110, because we are about to be setting a big precedent here, and I think we have to be very clear on what we are going to allow and what we are not going to allow in the future.

I appreciate all the input and I do store away the info and suggestions for future use and future situations. However, this league has never really been democratic in nature. Commish decision has been made.
Incidentally, just to show 2 examples of situations where I would have given a different ruling:
1. Chase Utley - when we declared keepers it was widely known he was injured, had surgery and had an uncertain return date. I the chase utley owner HAS NOT reached out and asked me to change. Simply using him as an example
2. Manny Ramirez - like many FA was unsigned when we declared keepers. However, I knew he had 1 suitor and was rejecting multiple types of offers from them. I still chose to keep him.
This was not a random decision. The reasoning behind allowing it was mine. There is no transparency, either. I hope thru almost 6 years of commishing well over 7 different leagues thru rotoguru people realize that I make decisions based on what I feel is right. Whether you agree or disagree philosophically w/ my decision you should understand I have my own reasoning for it.
As for the start date, we were unable to start because of delays in signing up people up on kafenatid. Hence me insisting on keepers early to persuade people to get active and get signed up. I've learned from experience that its never a quick process and I set deadlines accordingly.

I am the one to blame for us not drafting earlier. I signed up really late. Sorry guys. I have a feeling that Khahan (w/ his lessons learned as a commish) knew there were going to be stragglers and set the date for declaring keepers accordingly.

Utley and Manny are keeper worthy with the uncertainty. Sheets is not.

i think it's a tough call.
i think EVERY league should have some sort of emergency rule where if there's a serious injury, you can change your keepers pre-draft.
it's tough when it's not established ahead of time, but i also always felt it was a common courtesy.

I don't have a prob with people switching keepers before a draft starts in the case of a serious injury.
do we have a draft date yet? ribc draft starts on the 15th or so and I'd really prefer to avoid having to check in on 2 slow drafts simultaneously, if possible.

I got my #1 choice, and that's Chris Davis. I have faith that he'll take away PT at 3B from Michael Young, and be eligible for the foreseeable future. Even if not, I'm still happy.

I entered all of our teams (to this point) into a projection program and it shows my team as being in the top 3. I am pretty stoked about this.
And although this program is primarily confined to the left side of my brain, I am wholeheartedly endorsing it as almost fact.
I think Lance Berkman posting a .320 with 35 HRs 110 RBI's and 12 SB would be considered aiming low for The Big Puma.
Jay Bruce and Tulo will cement their status within the elite at their positions, and David Price will become what I like to call the Anti-Foppert of MLB.
Alex Rios, while greatly benefiting from life in Canada and all that this country has to offer, will post a career year trying to impress his Dirty Dozen owner who will be watching 20+ of his home games live this year.
Ryan Braun, having effectively swiped the title of "The Hebrew Hammer" from former teammate Gabe Kapler, will put up such amazing numbers that I can't help but to think about converting.
Joe Mauer has a Blue Hen connection, and with him flirting with .400 in April, it will be lights out for every other team trying to contend for the top average in the catcher position.
And by keeping Papelbon and K-Rod, The Barilko Killer B's have made a statement that Ryan Braun might not be the only one leading the team in saves this year.
Book it. Top 3 here I come.

And you don't think those projections are at all skewed by stats like, oh I don't know, the saves category where not all managers even have a player yet?
So you managed to get into the top 3 as you get points for saves (probably all 12 w/ your keeper picks). Top 3 over other teams that don't even have a presence in every category yet. Way to go barilko. :) I think you have the makings of the sequal to "Ringers"

no idea how many rounds Carpenter may have dropped. I think this is a good pick, but if he would have dropped a few rounds then it's a bad pick, but I just have no idea. I felt like it was too early, but I asked myself how I would have felt if I took an OF and then watched Carp go off the board - the answer was "pretty bad". This is the 1st keeper league for me, and the 1st time for any league other than an RIBC qualifier, that is other than a league with 16 teams. As the draft is unfolding, I already see mistakes in strategy. I do like my trade with GO, and hopefully Howards's BA won't hurt too much, but in retrospect trading Pedroia for draft picks might have been a better choice. If Rollin's can repeat 2007 and the 2nd half of 2008 trading Pedroia will have been be worth it.

How'd it go, Wiggs?
I'm pretty happy with my draft here. Obviously, I'm much stronger in pitching than hitting, but there are more good hitters left than pitchers.

I finished 8th overall- busted out with pocket aces against pocket 4s. He rivered a straight. I won 1150 dollars. Unfortunately they tax that 28 percent. I brought home alittle over 800. It was a 75 dollar buy in and because I made the final table I got a free room at the hotel so that was cool as well. Thanks for asking.

#195: Thanks. I'm only worried that Cincinnati will back off from letting Tavaras lead off. A couple of years ago I was all excited about Norris Hopper (remember him?) in the same position, so I'm a little worried. But I think it was a good point in the draft to roll the dice on him.

Taveras is interesting. He's a terrible hitter, but we value him in fantasy because he steals bases. But he's actually a decent player (in real life) because of his defense. He's the answer to the argument on both sides: Fantasy is fake because it overvalues steals and fantasy is fake because it undervalues defense.
In the end, Taveras is neither overrated nor underrated; he's just rated.

My pick in the 18th round is Oliver Perez. However, he is not in the kafenatid database apparently, so I am taking Chris Perez as a placeholder. I will email KKB in the morning (or someone else do it) to add Perez, then we can make the switch.
If anyone has issue with this, or if I'm just a dumbass and Perez is already taken, I'll just keep Chris Perez. If someone wants the real Chris Perez, post here and we'll work it out.

Hey all. I must have misread the posts above when putz was stated as wanted for 16.6 and the he talked about wanting somebody for 17.6. I have made the switch and putz is back on the board. I would have done this earlier, I was just thrown off by the numbered rounds.

Holt, you have a point. I hope this doesn't throw you off much. I used Perez for two reasons:
1. He's named Perez, so it would be more obvious what I had done.
2. If something went wrong and Olly was previously taken, or someone invoked the "must be on kafenatid" clause or whatever, I'd be stuck with Chris Perez, who wasn't the worst choice in the world at that point.
It's all good now - thanks for understanding.

Thanks. He wasn't really on my radar but I kept looking at the players on my short list and couldn't convince myself I needed any of them this round - so I went on a search for sleeper material. I just hope that if he does pitch well this season that it happens before I cut him. It's hard to have a lot of patience with guys like him (the Oliver Perez type). He definitely has a lot of K's in his future anyway.

I have just enough time to pop in here and say how good my team looks. I mean, sure there is 1 or 2 guys who can be replaced via waiver claims, but this is a team that will be placed high.
All in all, I guess I just want to say good job to myself for a draft well done.
On a side note, yesterday I was at the Jays/Rays game and had front row seats. Morgan Ensberg was walking by, and I commented, "Yeah, he is a long shot to make the team." He turned towards me, smiled, and then flipped up his shades and said, "I can't hear you, I have my sunglasses on."
So...for all of you that are going to try and make fun of my supersquad, be forewarned that it is sunny here in Florida and I plan to be wearing shades all day.

Hey Barilko, great draft. I'm sure you'll get a 12 in saves.
As for the league, we are almost fully loaded. I am actually waiting for 2 picks to be sent in to me (somehow, kafenatid actually ended early). Every player but these last 2 are loaded. Once I get them, I'll start the season.

He would be better off in Milwaukee or even in NY as a fill in for A-Rod.

He was in NY until recently. Lame. Honestly, I'd like to see him split time in Philly with Feliz, even though they both bat right. Career .830 OPS, with two career seasons over .900. I haven't seen him linked with steroids, but how in the world did he fall so far, so fast.

Alright, back from the sunny south, unfortunately, and here I am to post my recap and predictions!!!
My team needs three things really bad: Avg. SB and a solid 3b. If you have any to offer, please send me an email!!!
I have a ton of question marks at SP, and I just hope that a good percentage of them come through for me. Otherwise, there are always gems to be found on the WW.
Starting only 3 OF and 1 Util is always a tough thing in this league, it leaves tons of hitters on the WW, and a lot of good players on benches, which allowed me to take a chance on some younger guys like Salty and Andrus, knowing that I can always throw them back and get some solid veterans off the WW.
Anyways, here are some thoughts on other teams. Don't get all pissy and crybaby if I don't love your team, just remember, all of these analysis are coming from a lowly 5th place finisher from last year. (Although, let it be noted, my first year I placed 9th, then 7th my second year, and finally 5th last year. I smell a third place finish this year!)
Khahan's team looks strong. A lot of solid hitters combined with 2 stud SP make a great core. He will need to add pitching from the WW to pick up points, but we all know there are pitchers to be found as the season progresses.
Perm Dude has some serious power from last year, but many of those guys had career years. Can they match it again this year? If so, PD will have some nice numbers. Also has one of the favourite sleepers out there in AAAA star Nelson Cruz. Can he do it full time in the Big Leagues??? PD's pitching is filthy. Halladay, CC, Joba, Nolasco....all nice guys. No solid closers here though, so he too will be looking for saves on the ww.
Wiggs as usual has a strong draft. Guys like Bay, Granderson, Atkins, Abreu, Wells and D Lee (if both stay healthy), will give Wiggs a solid core of hitting machines! 3 nice closers, provided Marmol keeps the gig, which isn't etched in stone, and a couple young fireballers at SP make for a great young foundation to build on. My only fear with this squad is that Wiggs will limit himself to his usual 4 or 5 WW pick ups all year and will find his team dropping once again because of that.
Great One decided at the start of the year to try and pull a reverse Barilko. Instead of trying to hoard closers though, GO decided to try and corner the market on all of the good 2b men. Seriously, Kinsler, Pedroia, Ramirez?, even Kendrick has some nice late value. I am very surprised he didn't send out offers for Brandon Phillips and Brian Roberts. Or maybe he did? I can't believe how far Ibanez fell. That guy will post stats way above the position he went at. The starting pitching is nice with Johan, the Boston Buddies, and a couple wild cards in Verlander and Young. No big closers here, but GO hits the waiver wire harder than most, so he will get some stats there.
Da Bomb always gets to work with his nice set of keepers, A-Rod, Reyes, Vladdy, Ortiz, Webb...some have age creeping up though, so hopefully this will be the year we can start catching up to Da Bomb! Most drafts Da Bomb focuses on veterans, leaving the sleepers and prospects to others, but this year he took guys like Votto and Wieters, which will add some nice youth to his potential keeper list! Always gets cheap saves, and always waits to take these closers. Maybe I should watch and learn with that strategy!!!
Loki the newcomer has some nice keepers in Sizemore, Utley, Howard, Martin, Ellsbury and Rollins. Adding in guys like Magglio, Ethier, Baker, and Scherzer will give his team some nice stats across the board. Nabbed popular sleepers with Felipe Lopez and Jason Motte, and added a contract year Adrian Beltre, this team looks like it has some horses to pull it to the top part of the standings!
The Champ, Holt, might have a tough time repeating with the solid competition that is in the DD. He still has Wright, Holliday, who I think everyone is undervaluing too much, Lincecum, Ichiro, who I think I traded to him 2 years ago, and Brian McCann. He also nabbed some trendy sleepers in Chris Carpenter, Achoo, and Kevin Gregg. Holt will fight for a top spot, and should be in the top half of the standings, but I don't think he can repeat. Or can he?
Little Weasel has power throughout his lineup. Guys like Soriano, Youk, Morneau, Phillips, Aramis, and then secondary players like Mora, Dye, and Nady will provide nice hitting stats, while I like Jeter and Hernandez to have bounce back years. Pitching is the Weasel's weakness though, especially if AJ, BJ, and Ervin hit the DL, which based on spring training and/or past performances, is very likely. But, we all know there are pitchers to be had on the WW, so I predict the Weasel will be moving up from his finish last year! (Is there any other way to go?)
Astade: Has top tier guys in Hanley, Kemp, Teixeira, and Miggy. All are in their prime and are fairly young yet as well. (Although Cabrera could get old real quick with his conditioning). If his pitching can pitch to their reputations, Zambrano, Peavy, Oswalt, and Shields, can all be top guys. Add to that Lester, Lowe, and Smoltz, and it looks like Astade has pitching to trade. Some potential closers in the mix as well, but not one with a solid grasp on a closing job. Still, a very nice team here.
Blue Hen: He has Albert Pujols. He is pretty good. Crawford should have a great bounce back year, and will be a top pick in most drafts next year after sliding a bit for this year. Dunn is what we thought he is...40/100, although those numbers could fall with Washington. Too bad its not OBP for Dunn. Maybin and Upton are up and coming stars, maybe not quite yet this year, but in future years, which will allow Hen to replace his aging keeper list. Chris Davis is a hot sleeper, probably one of the hottest out there. I think the hype is too much. He will be good this year, but maybe not as good as what people are projecting. .275, 28, 98 RBIs is what I see. Hen followed his usual pitching strategy by grabbing Ollie Perez. Did anyone ever doubt that? I mean we should just have awarded him Perez at the start of the draft so Hen could concentrate more. Middle of the pack here...only because I think Hen always hits the WW hard.
Tree: Some great bats in Hamilton (Can he repeat, I think he can), Markakis, B Roberts, and Beltran. I think Beltran breaks down this year and misses a good chunk of games. Call it a hunch. V-Mart bounces back slightly, but nowhere near his allstar numbers from years past. Somewhere in the middle. Hamels hopefully will be healthy, Rivera is a constant, Soria was great last year, but can the Royals be good enough to help him repeat his stats in 09? I think pitching is needed, but Tree is one of the top WW vultures as well, so there is light here.
Top Teams in 2009:
Barilko's Honkballers. (come on, I have to pick my own team) A major sleeper, takes all jokes and criticism, but will work the wire hard, and place in the top 4. A major plus is that he will have the market cornered on all Canadian news. (Yesterday a canoe capsized in a lake near my cottage. You can't pay for info that good.)
Khahan: A solid group of hitters, and should he find some closers throughout the year, he will be in the top 4.
Da Bomb: Its easy to place this team in the top 4, as it usually is there. Unless Ortiz and Vladdy start playing like old geezers, there is enough talent here to finish high.
Astade: I really like this team this year, and look for a strong showing in 09. So much pitching, some of these guys have to hit their potential, which means the others don't. It kind of evens out that way. See you in the top 4.

Strangely enough, I was working on a deal with Tree that involved Brian Roberts lol... but then I realized the situation would be even more insane. That was before picking up Kendrick. Don't forget though that Alexei is 2B/SS/OF and will be holding down SS for me. So its only Kinsler/Pedroia/Kendrick that are a problem. Kinsler I plan to trade at some point, targeting a 3B for him cause I want Micheal Young as my backup 3B/SS option not as a starter. Also gonna have a sweet flex guy in Guillen who I expect to bounce back at 1B/3B/OF. And yeah, I've been clammering for an IF position to be added in this league forever. Those in Lucky 13 know how useful it is, it really opens up the trading and flexibility of teams. There is too much on the waiver wire, and one more starting spot would take care of that. My team never gets projected high by anyone, in any league... but its all good! Just like sports growing up - I was always the last guy on the bench to start the season, and an All-Star representative by seasons end!

Fair assessment- I have never been one that has been big on the waiver wire. Maybe I will try to change that this season. I just usually fall in love with my team and never know who to move.

I'm the opposite... I try not to get married to anyone outside of my core of guys. If I see a sweet pitching matchup I'm all about rotating it in. Our outcomes are generally the same anyway, just different ways to get there. I have cut people loose and lost them and had it backfire cause I wish i still had them -- but I've also gotten in on a few guys before they really took off and have benefited that way. Its all just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic I guess! haha...

I get married to some players and ignore others with no rhyme or reason. Can't really explain it. Sometimes its good, sometimes it backfires. This league I've just been off from day 1. I remember our inaugural draft I was hyped to have gotten Jim Thome and Kerry Wood as cornerstones to my team for years to come. Even after their injuries I held on too long and am just now recovering. Of course there are just the opposite situations that have kept me from recovering in this league. My prior draftees/ww pick ups have included Mark Teixiera, Jose Reyes and Vlad Guerrero (2004), Ian Kinsler (2007), Victor Martinez (2007), Derek Lee (2005) and Nate McClouth (2007). I've traded for and had the likes of Brandon Webb and Jimmy rollins (2005). yet I hold onto guys like Dontrelle Willis the other year as keeper (right as he imploded).
In other leagues where I'm fighting for first and winning on a regular basis, I've never finished higher than 8th and have finished 10th at least 4 times. Its just a matter of being married to the wrong players at the wrong time.
Of course if I had held onto those guys above I wouldn't be poised for a long run of contention with the young guns I have now. :)
so if you want to know who to draft next year, take a look at my team from last year and which young players I didn't keep. :) You'll hit gold!

I wouldn't mind still having Markakis.
In my longest-running keeper league (10 keeper, 12 team), I came out of our initial 2004 draft with Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, and Johan Santana. I felt pretty good about that team, but it fell apart pretty quick. I still have Santana, but all of the others are long gone.

Alright - start the keeper thread, and you are officially locked into keeping him! :0 I would be good with either, the reason I've seen IF work so well is because its usually the extra 1B/3B types that are clogging up the UT spots and waiver wire. So if you give them a home, then the UT spot itself opens up to random OF, 1B, 3B whatever...

My team is filled with guys who think that hitting below the Mendoza line is acceptable.
As most of you know, Blue Hen and I have a wager as to how many stolen bases Lance Berkman can get. The over/under is 8. My question now is: how the heck is Lance Berkman going to steal his bases when he is genuinely shocked at himself for getting to first base in the first place.
How is Ryan Braun going to hold the title of The Hebrew Hammer if he can't even sink a finishing nail. If Gabe Kapler wasn't sucking it up so much in TBay, I am sure he would have already submitted an email to Bud inquiring about the steps needed to take the title away from Braun.
And boy is Tulo ever making me look bad for using a valued keeper spot on him, although he does have 3 bombs so far this year.
Ian Stewart is pounding the crap out of the ball, is a solid, if not above average defensive player, yet the Rox can't seem to find a spot for him in their lineup. Putting him in RF last night is a good start.
Jay Bruce sucks. At least he is young.
Alex Rios needs to come around. I mean he plays for the most awesome team in the league, his teammates are hitting the ball like its 1993, but for some reason he is just sitting back and letting his ass get carried.
Houston needs to learn how to win games so Valverde can get some saves. Tampa Bay needs to stop being cheap and save their season by calling up Price.
Otherwise, its all on the young guys this year...Fowler, Snider, Pence, hopefully Andrus. Solid core to build on, albeit too many OF's.
Harang and Josh Johnson are money though! Their awesomeness remind me a lot of how awesome my team was in my head during the preseason.
Time to step things up boys!

Alex Rios: 5 for 11, R, 4 RBIs
Jay Bruce: 4 for 8, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI
Tulo: 0 for 5. Ok this guy needs positive reinforcements. You can do it man!

Can somebody give me Brad Lidge's stats since 4/18 when Blue Hen started bragging about him not blowing a save in two years?! haha... thats why I'm scared to talk about any of my players doing good. Otherwise I'd bring up Nelson Cruz winning the battle vs. Andre Ethier in G20.

Heh. I watched that on TV yesterday. He looked terrible. Might as well sign Bob Wickman if they want a pitcher like that--save the team millions.
Since 4/18:
15.3 innings 22 hits 17 ER 14/12 K/BB 6 saves/4 blown saves
His ERA jumped from 4.50 on 4/17 to 8.85. WHIP from 1.333 to 2.066.

My team looked reasonably strong at the beginning of the season, but I could not have predicted that Martin, Rollins and Ordonez would be hitting so poorly (They are all having negative career years.), and that Manny would be suspended causing Ethier to slump. Sizemore, has not been hitting due to injury and could have season ending surgery. My best hope is for second half bounce backs by these players and for Sizemore to avoid surgery and return to top 5 form. My starting pitching is fine, but I have not been able to improve my closers during the season as I thought I would with FAs. Starters are available for closers if there is any interest. My secret weapon, a stud pitcher by the name of Casey, will be joining the Zephyrs after the All Star break and will dominate all pitching categories.

Please send me offers for a third baseman. Mike Lowell just started to realize he is Mike Lowell and that he should start to suck immediately to get his stats to average out to Mike Lowell like stats.

Now it is all clear. I am surprised I didn't figure this one out before this newsflash came across my computer screen.
Lance Berkman, probably the fastest first baseman this side of John Kruk, was a mortal lock for double digit steals this year. I didn't even think twice about that goal. I mean everyone who knew anything about pumas and panthers knew Berkman was good for at least 11. So I made the bet. It almost seemed like a sucker bet at first, I mean how could Hen even consider taking the under.
So then check me out as I was absolutely mortified as I watched Berkman not even get on base enough to even consider swiping a base. Come on, if the dude doesn't even have it in his bat to get to first, how the heck is he going to steal his way to second, and thereby seal my wager?
But then it all became clear. The facts have finally surfaced and the baseball nation can rest easy. Berkman's wife just gave birth to their 4th child. So not only did Berkman have to expend all his extra energy chasing around 3 current rugrats, but he also had the added task of ice cream and pickle runs for his significant other. I am surprised he even had energy to pick Miggy's throws out of the dirt time and time again.
So...hopefully all is well again. 3 stolen bases by a 220 pound 33 year old first baseman is gold as he makes his way to the magic number of 8 and seal Hen as the worst prognosticator since that guy in our league who was crazy hyping fireballers, and I use that term very loosely, Mark Prior, Daniel Cabrera, and Oliver Perez as the second, third, and fourth comings of Nolan Ryan.
With Berkman back, both mentally and ice creamily, The Honkballers are poised to take this league.
Great One, step aside. Khahan, best of luck as you battle for that second place finish behind my Alex Rios lead all-star squad. DaBomb, Tree, Holt, get my money to GO pronto.
Less than a month ago The Honkballers were in a desperate fight to maintain a 9th place position in this league, but now things are looking up, nothing less than 1st is acceptable at this point.
David Price is on the block for something that can help me now. Jay Bruce too. Elvis is still here, waiting to leave the building for a player or package of guys who can help me this year.
I have a second round pick available for an upgrade as well. Or a third. Fourth. Fifth.
The all-star break hasn't arrived yet, so there is lots of time to make up points!

Not that I am looking like I will finish in the top 3 this year, but I think it is totally ridiculous that there are guys who haven`t sent in their money despite repeated warnings and reminders.
The punishment that GO instituted for not paying being a simple `you can`t win any money this year` in my mind isn`t much of a punishment if you aren`t close to the top anyways.
So I propose that Tree and DaBomb get their $10 in. Seriously, its not like that is going to break a bank or anything.
My proposal: If its not in by the all-star break, then I think that they should be eliminated from any future yearly prize pools immediately, much like we do in the G20 BB league.

Holt, the way my players have been doing, you should have assumed it was me. This season has been one to forget. I'll just lump Cueto's performance along with all my other under performers as I am well on my way to my 1st last place finish ever. My initial trade with GO for Rollins set the pattern for the whole season, and after an initial run, it has been down hill ever since. Maybe my team will wake up, and the Zephyrs will make a run at 11th place.

There are several contenders in this league. My plan to keep Cain and Billingsley looks pretty good right now, but I wish my other pitchers (Garza and Bedard, particularly) would contribute at the same level.

Well, this isn't how I intended to be doing at the ASB. My team is essentially the opposite of "on fire." Is that like being out of whack? What's the opposite of out of whack?

I would like to attribute my poor performance to being a keeper league rookie, but its not. No way to have predicted key hitters Ordonez, Sizemore, Martin and Rollins to be "out of whack." Can they hit their groove (opposite of out of whack) after the ASB; who knows? My only real mistake was waiting too long to take a closer which was a function of playing in a keeper league for the 1st time. I will make some sort of a run as the law of averages kicks in for my hitters, but in 2010 I will be factor. The Zephyrs have a strong nucleus of keepers and some very talented young pitchers to get me started in 2010.

Sizemore is starting to heat up I think (I have him in 2 other keeper leagues so I've been watching his stats). As for Rollins he is looking better. I was at the game on Fri and every at bat he hit the ball very well. Very solid contact, very hard hits....right at fielders. Every single one. He's not swinging a limp noodle anymore. He just can't find the holes.

I stuck with him for some time, but I think he's only getting time in the rotation because the Yankees don't have anyone else to replace him with. Pitching half his games in "Coors Field of the East" doesn't help.

In the midst of my team of under performers there is Jake Fox. He was leading all minor leagues in BA, RBIs and HRs when I drafted him, and he has continued to hit against ML pitching: BA .326 (28/86), 5 HR, 11 R, 19 RBIs, OBP .365, and SLG .593 (last 2 stats for RIBC AAA). He has shown Piniella that he can hit righties and lefties , but Piniella will only play him part time. Fox needs a position, but how do you sit someone so hot. That's how my season has gone, but at least this is a keeper league.

I think it's time for me to face reality and start working on next year. Injuries just came at me like I've never witnessed before. I'm either looking to package a few guys for a keeper quality player or trade players for draft picks.
Players that are most looking to be my keepers are A-rod, Reyes, Votto, Verlander, Gallardo, and Webb, so they will be more difficult to obtain.
However, that leaves players such as Wieters, Ortiz, Kubel, Vlad, Hunter, Quentin, Escobar, Wandy, Joba, Happ, Kazmir, and my 5 closers to be had. Let the bidding begin!

Hey guys, I got a decent offer for Pujols yesterday. It's not quite enough, but it got me thinking about things. If you can give me enough good players to put me in a position to win this year, let's talk. It's probably going to take one lesser keeper-quality player, one or two aging stars who are still hitting, and some other stuff from closers, a catcher and a starter. There are only a couple players in this league who can command an offer like that, and I am lucky to be one of them.

You bet. I'm definitely going to take my time with this. I'm very fortunate to have had Pujols drop in my lap, and I want to make sure I do the right thing.
I understand most teams can't just pull together an offer with a bunch of players, many of whom are potential keepers, too quickly. I'm willing to listen or talk through anything that's out there.
Remember that you get to keep Pujols unconditionally for the next 8 to 10 years. Every year, it'll be like getting the #1 pick in a roto draft. I'm happy to be heading down that path; however, I'm also willing to part from that path but I need to all but guarantee victory for 2009.
That's going to mean probably 5-6 players who are contributing for you right now. It's a steep price.

There are definitely a lot of compelling offers here, including things like players o-ranked in the single digits and one offer that included eight players straight up. Many of them are tempting, but so is having Pujols.
I've also fallen back in the last few weeks. If I'm not going to compete this year, I should probably hang on to Albert. I'll keep thinking about it.

I think the trade deadline is much less important in a keeper league. If you try to dump players or make a huge move at the end of the year, you will pay the price the following year. I am in favor for it being as late as possible. Maybe this is something we can discuss in the off-season?

How can you Phillies fans stand it? Rooting for the Phils to beat the Cubs tonight, Lidge comes in up 3-2, and you just know he's not gonna close it out:
- B. Lidge relieved R. Madson - K. Fukudome walked - R. Theriot sacrificed to pitcher, K. Fukudome to second - M. Bradley singled to right, K. Fukudome scored - D. Lee struck out swinging, M. Bradley stole second - J. Fox flied out to deep center - End of Inning (1 Run, 1 Hit, 0 Errors)
How does this guy still have the closer job? I guess that's why MLB managers make the big bucks. They are able to make brilliant decisions that defy all logic. 7.24 ERA and 1.76 whip - that's even worse than Matt Capps (who should also not be a closer at this point).

First of all, Lidge has kind of a pass for the next decade or so. And he's still better than Mitch ever was.
Tonight, the walk was the killer. Really started the wheels in motion. The good thing about Lidge is that he generally can get a strikeout when he needs it. But he's needed it plenty this year, and that's the big difference from last year.

Glad to see they pulled it out, but Lidge... I don't get to watch many philly games but there is some serious problem with his control. If they go into the playoffs without him making some kind of adjustment, will they really run him out there in the 9th in a 1 run ballgame? If there is no mechanical adjustment to be made I'd be looking for other options right now.

Yeah, he gave up 23 first inning runs last year in 20 starts. Only 8 of those starts was he able to keep the other team from scoring at least one run in the first.
On the other hand, as a reliever he would be unlikely to be facing the top of the order very often.

re 493 I sometimes do that because I'm in a hurry, open a trade, have no idea what to make of it, and plan to get back to it later. If I simply think it's crap then I reject it right away. I don't personally think it's rude for an offer to be left hanging a few days. Makes no difference to me.

From Rotowire:
Guys, you might not want to read the details on this one. Beltre took a one-hopper to the groin area in the ninth inning Wednesday, yet managed to play out the remainder of the 14-inning game. However, he may now need surgery due to bleeding in the testicle, which would put him out indefinitely.
It actually looks like he'll be back soon, since he avoided the surgery.

Yeah...blockbuster trade!
Been working on getting a top keeper for awhile and many emails went out to many managers.
I think I undervalued Cano after looking back at his stats, but Berkman worried me. K-Rod is what he is, and will get solid stats from a closer. Johnson has a chance to be good, but I can't keep both him and Vazquez. Maybe I should have kept Johnson.
But Teixeira adds a huge bat to my team, power stats, amazing after recovering from a slow NY start.
Even trade as Astade makes a push for this year, and I look to shorten my keeper list with a stud for next year.

Ok fine, I see exactly where both of you were going with this, and it's actually similar to deals I was looking for with Pujols, albeit with worse players. It really hinges on Berkman, because at his best, he's about akin to Teixeira. But he hasn't been there in a while.

Wow, I might have made the trade at just the right time:
Berkman unsure of baseball future from MLB.com
"I'm going to play next year because I'm under contract, and if they pick up the option, we'll see where I'm at after that year," he said. "That's kind of how I'm viewing it."
"I don't think that's fair to the team or to me," he said. "If I'm not going to perform a level I'm comfortable with, I'm not going to play. I'm going to play next year because I'm obligated to play. I'm going to give as a good of an effort as I can, and see what happens. If I have a good year and they pick the option up, I'll be committed for another year.
"I don't want to hang around. I don't want to hamstring the organization, and I don't want to take away from my family and things like that. If I'm not as productive as I want to be, I'll take it to the house."

unbelievable finish barilko! A few months ago, I saw that I was close to finishing in the top 3 so I decided to pull of a few trades to improve my pitching and spread out my offensive arsenal (not put all my 'eggs' in one basket). Once I passed Tree, I thought I pretty much had #3 locked down. I went back and looked at the past month's stats and aside from a weak performance from my OF and a few SP, I don't think my team underachieved. I just got beat my a better team. Congrats to you and GO/Holt as well.

Great season guys. I had a great start, but couldn't hold on in the end. I had a lot of early overachievers and a lot of late underachievers, and that's a recipe for disaster in a league like this. But at least my keepers are in pretty good shape.
Barilko, Lance got picked off in that game, and almost got ejected trying to call it a balk. Sorry about your prediction; I guess you just shouldn't mess with Blue Hen.

First off, thanks to the league for inviting me this year. I agree with Holt that it was a great season, and I enjoyed the competition. As you know, I was a keeper league rookie and made rookie mistakes with my keepers and in the draft. The most glaring one was ignoring the save category which effectively prevented a top 3 finish, but I did manage to climb from last to 4th place. I am looking forward to 2010. On another note, I was able to finish 1st in RIBC AA and if Guru follows his same rules, I should be in RIBC next year. Will any of the Dirty Dozen be there?

congrats GO, well played. you are the champion my friend, and you will keep fighting til the end.
my team stunk it up the past 2 weeks. Actually, I stunk it up, as I kept benching great performances night after night. Just 11 more RBI would have gotten me and extra 4 points...
Really I feel happy just finishing in the money. I think my team had 1's in almost every category about a month into the season. My hitting this season was weak. I think I had 1 single player that I gave over 500 AB's. Lots of platooning.
Luckily for me, my starting 4 of Lincecum, Carpenter, Kershaw, and Jurrjens spotted me enough points that I could still have a good year with such a crap lineup. My team MVP's would be Lincecum and Matt Holliday, which is funny because I was benching Holliday a lot when he was with the A's. I was *this* close to cutting him several times...
Looking at my team log, here are my team leaders: Russell Branyan 23 HR David Wright 85 R Matt Holliday 96 RBI David Wright 27 SB Ichiro .350 BA
Chris Carpenter 17 W Joe Nathan 47 Sv Tim Lincecum 261 K Chis Carpenter 2.24 ERA Chris Carpenter 1.01 Whip
Branyan leading my team in HR is just sad, and funny.
Lookin forward to next season, with a very different list of keepers. I'll be in RIBC loki; finished third there this season.

Loki - I ignore saves til I can find them for cheap or nothing and look where it got me! Holt - tough finish, I actually didn't think I'd catch you with all my pitching imploding. Glad I didn't trade Johan either when i could have. Just picked up the Arroyo's, Duensing's and Lowe's of the world to fill in for him down the stretch and got lucky they performed. I'm gonna have to move one of CC, Beckett, Lester or Johan this offseason so keep an eye out anyone looking for pitching. It was a freaking battle trying to find SB's. My team was hitting HR's left and right when I didn't need them anymore and my SB guys quit running. Its funny too because the only "power hitter" I drafted or carried over was Prince. Nyjer Morgan was supposed to fix that and then he went down.

Holy Crap?!?! That is almost an insult GO! Come on, is that much of a surprise that I can draft a team to finish third???? hahaha
Roll mine over for sure.
That Teixeira trade actually helped me out, he put up very nice numbers, and the FA's that I picked up to fill the spots of the other guys I traded gave great numbers too. I know I gave up a whack of talent in that deal, so I think it was a win/win for both me and Astade.
Its funny, one morning I get an email from GO blasting me for picking up Kaz Matsui so late in the season, saying it was going to cost him first place, as he was just about to snag him. At the time I was in 6th I think, and I told him I was still gunning for third. I can now say Kaz Matsui is my lucky charm.
Congrats to GO and Holt, it was a fun year!

Yeah, that was an error I made, I had Kaz ready to add one night. Then decided to wait til the next morning to not throw away a game from Carlos Guillen before dropping him (Kaz was off that day). Which considering I didn't need HR's/RBI's didn't make much sense... and then Guillen was facing Grienke anyway and went 0-3. I get up at 7:00 AM to add him before work and Barilko already did! Jerk.

I continue to be impressed by managers who win a lot in every league. I think Holt is probably the one guy I would never bet against in any league, and Great One is the best waiver wire worker I've seen. And Barilko has a lot of that no quit in him as well.
In the end, this turned into a very disappointing DD season, and I think Bedard and Billingsley are the two to blame, as they were awful/hurt after strong starts.
I also made a bunch of other mistakes, like Dioner Navarro and then when I wised up getting a done Bengie Molina.
All told, a pretty sorry season, but I'm pretty happy with my keepers right now.

Also, I'm interested in taking a look at maybe adding a couple categories - one hitting, one pitching for a "Dirty Dozen" of categories. For hitting I was going to propose Doubles + Triples which I believe is an option we used in my work league. It was a really fun category. The problem as usual is finding a good pitching category to match. And I don't think I want Holds cause that adds a whole different element to things.

And while I'd be fine adding one more hitter, I'm fine keeping it this way. This is my "shallow" league and that's kind of the point.

Alright, lets throw out guys we have and what not. Do you think a league that has OBP is better than AVG? Cause if thats the case, then I'll make the proposal to transition to that by 2011 or 2012. I personally hate AVG cause to me a walk is as good as a hit and to go 0-2 with 3 walks and in this format it tells me I had a bad day. And to me, thats just not accurate.

2011 for the OBP. There's no real reason not to do it now, but I'm certainly willing to go along with a transition of a year while waiting for those few guys who have high averages but low OBP to get on the stick.
Adam Dunn had a very good year in 2009, doing better in AVG by 20 points (while only 16 points better than career average in OBP).

PD, we're not comparing Dunn to himself; we're comparing him to the league. At .270, he is average. At .250 he is bad.
But at .390 he is very good, and at .410 he is great.

So he's average in one category (or even below), but he's got 38 dingers and 105 ribbies.
Once you get past the top 4-5 guys, players are always a trade off. And guys who you would typically shy away from because of low OBP are the ones you'd shy away from for BA as well (sometimes more so).

Wrong. Cristian Guzman has an above average batting average and a (far) below average OBP. Adding OBP takes Dunn from a 4th or 5th keeper to a 2nd keeper. That's a pretty big difference. And while I'd love to have the value of my player increased, it's not fair.

I can understand wanting to keep HR and BA due to the fact that they are traditional. On that basis, I don't have a prob with people wanting to continue using those stats. On the flip-side, I doubt that anyone can make a persuasive argument that HR and BA are better than SLG and OBP when determining a players true value to a team.
Thing is, roto ball by its very nature is bad at determining which of our teams really has the best group of players, so I'm not sure how much it matters what categories we use.

Don't forget the polkaroo. He has almost as many intangibles as Jeter.
Not for DD, but I'd love to see an intangibles league. Points for web gems, for your team winning, double points for suspensions, etc.

This year will be much later than in the past now that I'm handling commish duties. Opening Day is Sunday April 4th, so to me - no need for keepers until a month before that at the earliest. Our draft only takes a couple weeks. So lets tentatively say Sunday Feb 28th, starting the draft (without a timer) on Monday March 1st after I get all the keepers punched into Kafenatid. That should wrap things up about a week before the season starts. We also need to find a new manager to take over Khahan's spot. He left a pretty good squad behind.

Hey guys, just an fyi, Little Weasel has informed he is not participating in fantasy baseball this year. I'm not sure if he has the board address anymore or not or would remember to check in.
