0 Subject: 10th Annual RotoGurupie Keeper League

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Fri, Feb 27, 2009, 13:25

So far, the following members have indicated they are in:

Guru
Rich (philliephan)
Mike Chen
Dennis Shiao
Philflyboy
coldwater coyotes
Mike V
Solvang Sluggers

That leaves the following two teams to be heard from:
Russ (Hannah's Hits)
Deepsnapper

Allow me to make an offer.

I would like to try out ESPN as a league hosting site. I believe they are now as viable as Yahoo, with several potential advantages, including:
1. Free live scoring
2. Pitching ratios are carried to more than 2 decimal places
3. Player additions can be inserted in the lineup on the day of pickup (if the day's first game has not yet started), rather than having to wait until the following day.

The one caveat is that ESPN applies hitter limits in aggregate, rather than by position. So instead of having each position subject to a 162 game limit, all 10 hitter slots are subject to a total limit of 1620 games.

While I would prefer the "by position" approach, I don't think it makes a great deal of difference for baseball, since it is usually difficult to use up all available game capacity anyway. But it is a difference.

Here is my proposal:
If we agree to try ESPN this year, I'll agree to serve as Commish, including setting up the league at ESPN, and organizing the draft at Kafenatid.net.

If people feel it is important to remain at Yahoo, then I would rather not Commish. Remember that this league was hosted at Sandbox for its early years, so we have not always been at Yahoo.

What say ye?

Second issue.

Do we want to allow pre-draft trading (i.e., draft picks for keepers)? We did that several years ago, but last year we got such a late start that we had no time for that.

By the way, if you are already logged into Yahoo, you should be able to pull up last year's standings and rosters here:

I just set up the league as ESPN and sent out invites.

Since we've done it before and we have time, I'm going to declare that preseason trading of players for either players or picks is OK.

Each team will have 4 keepers. We'll need to figure out a date to lock in keepers. Probably sometime around March 10-15, give or take.

Draft will need to start sometime in the March 15-18 range. As I recall, we moved pretty fast last year, although we got a late start and were under the gun. Still, with only 210 draft picks to make, the draft should not require more than 2 weeks, and possibly much less.

I will set up the draft at kafenatid and send out the particulars shortly. I have not done that yet.

We still have not heard from deepsnapper. I wonder if he is still having eye troubles?

If you want to "shop" any players for trades, feel free to list them here.

Subject to further analysis, my likely keepers are J. Santana, D. Wright, C. Beltran, and A. Soriano.

That means that the following players are available (listing only those that might have keeper value):

Hitters:
David Ortiz

Closers:
Jose Valverde
Brian Fuentes
Joakim Soria

I would prefer to stay with Yahoo . . . I have enough trouble trying to find time to log into one site -- I'll go with the majority though.
No problem with pre-draft trades -- I'll get to my roster in a few days.

Sorry for not checking in guys. It's been a tough 2009. My dad passed away in january and we've had my mom with us up until last week. She's back in WF and adjusting to a new way of life.

I'm catching up on about 500 emails ATM, but I'm really glad to get my head around some baseball. I'll only need untiil Sat to catch up on things should everyone want to go forward with the draft. I have been watching Sportscenter & the MLBchannel.

Last year, as I recall, we got through about 2 rounds per day for the draft. That suggests we should need about 10-11 days. Since the season does not start until April 5, I think we could wait until March 20th and still have plenty of margin.

So let me propose this schedule:

Keepers must be finalized by the end of day, March 18. I'll input the keepers into Kafenatid on March 19, and activate the draft. Starting on Friday (March 20), we'll set a 6 hour time limit for each pick, with an overnight moratorium from 1am until 7am EDT.

Does that sound OK to everyone?

I entered the draft picks so far, and then released the league at ESPN for free agent pickups. I also turned off waivers, so that players may be added immediately.

When you draft a player, please go to ESPN and add that player to your roster. I'll try to clean things up every round or so, but the database will be the most complete if you each take responsibility to add your players ASAP.

I should be good for 21.

Mike V - Chris Young in SD is the SP, Chris Young in AZ in the OF.

The SD Young is the guy Texas traded with A. Gonzales in another dumb move for a "mature SP & "a player to be named later" (both of whom aren't in the league anymore).

At the risk of digging into a deeper hole. I'm going to move the draft along. If anyone has an issue with Chris Young, speak up.

I don't want to leave the two good pitchers that I had up in the draft but I must do this. My four keepers are:

Ryan Braun
Prince Fielder
Chase Utley
Joe Mauer

Last year, we held the draft at kafenatid, started on March 19, and finished it in 8 days.

I suggest we do the same thing this year, starting around March 22. Keepers should be finalized on March 21. Sound like a plan?

If so, I'll take care of setting up the league on kafenatid.

Are we going to allow predraft trades where we trade players for a move in draft picks. By this I mean a trade of players for a trade in draft picks.

Since we have time, I see no reason not to allow pre-draft trading.

I just sent out the kafenatid.net registration instructions, using the email link at ESPN. If you don't receive it , let me know.

I have up for trade Zack Greinke and Felix Hernandez. I have the last choice in the first round. What I want to do is to move up in the draft and I will trade one of these for a chance to move up in the first round and one to move up in the second round.

Both are good choices.

Ryan Howard...what are the rules of protecting the next 3 players. What if i don't really think they are worth holding on to?

You really need to protect 4. You can trade picks for players on other teams, however. If there are unprotected players on other teams that you would like to have, for example, you could swap one your your earlier picks for one of their later picks to get that player.

If you don't protect 4 players, you don't get any extra first round picks. (I suppose that wouldn't be such a bad rule, but we've never done that.)

Johann Santana

The leaves the following potential keepers available for trade:
Brian McCann
Brian Roberts

RE: post 112 There's a link on the selecting keepers page that indicates that a manager can select less than the total number of keepers. I would assume that applies only to an ESPN draft.
SO I will ignore that option (even though I'd liek to take advantage of it.)

My 4 are:
M.Wieters
M.Cabrera
A.Ramirez
J.Bay

I'm open to trade, but am not isterested in giving up my #2 slot for a #10 slot (Russell; post 103)

I sent Chen an email. If he does not respond, we will need to select them for him.

Lincecum, Halladay, and Tulowitzki seem obvious. The fourth would probably be either Adrian Gonzalez or Zobrist.
