14.01 Jason Campbell, QB, Wash

Figured it would be a good time to take a backup QB. Looking over, there were a few options. Decided to go with Campbell because he should take a step forward. Having a new coach that was a QB’s coach should help him along with his progression.

14.02 Trent Cole DL
This was an interesting pick as IDP's go. I picked Cole in the very last round last year and he was a bit of a revelation, coming in the top 5 in DL last year. It might have been the only time my two DL were out-playing all of my LB. Cole is also a player with some up-side if he can be more consistent with his pass-rush. It fills a need for an otherwise lack-luster roster spot.

Always a top rated DB. Gets lots of tackles. Hoping his move to the Raiders will do something to boost his numbers. Hit or miss. Not much of a risk here.

14.05 Antonio Pierce LB NYG

Again, I cannot believe that this player which I targeted is STILL available.

Before sustaining an ankle injury in the first half of the 2007 season that he played through, Pierce was on pace for almost 100 total tackles. The Giants defensive scheme funnels plays to Pierce and he makes tackles. Opportunities abound in this scheme for Pierce and as the 28th LB taken, he is most definitely a low risk pick.

I know he's been a bit banged up with a chest sprain this pre-season and those type of injuries can linger, and after a solid rookie season his production dropped a bit last year but....The Packers are my favorite team, I've had great luck with 3rd year players in past, and the name A.J. Hawk just screams kick-a** Linebacker ;).

14.07 Kevin Jones, RB, Chi

Handcuffing Matt Forte. As a rookie, Forte is certainly no sure thing, and Jones has enough experience that the Bears could turn to him if Forte falters early on. And then there is always the possibility of the dreaded RBBC. Hopefully one or the other will assume the leading role. But in a league with 28 starting RBs each week, even RBBC backs have value.

It’s always difficult to know when to handcuff a running back, since backup RBs tend to be in demand through the draft. My experience is that, if you have an important handcuff targeted, get him sooner than later. Playing guts by waiting is usually a losing proposition.

Still, if there had been another screaming need, I’d have deferred another round. One could argue that it’s more important for me to land a reasonable QB2 at this juncture, but none of the top names on my list excite me, and frankly if Romo gets injured, I’m screwed at QB. Jones has a better chance to contribute to my team this year.

14.08 Aaron Rodgers, QB, GB

In round 12 I had debated on getting a backup qb. Both Eli and Vince Young were available and looked like very solid options. I ended up going a different direction and they were each quickly gone. I didn't want to wait too long and get stuck with someone I wouldn't feel comfortable plugging in for my bye week or to use in case of an injury to Derek Anderson.

I feel pretty good about Rodgers; he's shown some confidence in his stints in Favre-relief in the past and in the preseason. Hopefully I don't need him much, but he could be trade-fodder in case he comes on stronger than expected.

14.09 Antwaan Randle El, WR, Was
Zorn guaranteed that Randle El will be a bigger part of the offense and have more catches this year. On top of that he should still get time as a return man. I had him on my radar for a few rounds and was happy he was still here in rd 14. I doubt he would have been around in rd 15 but who knows?

Just read that he is going to be playing through a broken hand. Great.

Jon Kitna, QB, Det

The number of QBs who I prefer are backup QBs was declining so I decided to grab Kitna at this time. He's still got a potent passing attack in Detroit and I'm hoping to only use him for my bye week. You never know though.

I prefer drafting a starter off another team rather than the backup from my #1 QB. In this case, I much prefer Kitna to Byron Leftwich in the event Brees went down for any extended length of time.

14.11 Gary Brackett, LB, Ind
This is INSANELY late to start drafting my IDPs… I admit this, but, I found over the last few years that I've had pretty good luck in my drafting of LBs especially, so I figured I'd grab the "quality" positions first, before going IDP. Brackett is the more reliable option in the LB crew in Indy, but doesn't necessarily play the "money" spot. That said, I'm comfortable with him being my LB1, although he'd rank as most peoples LB2 I'm sure.

This is my handcuff for Jacobs. If Jacobs goes down then this could be a good RB drafted in the 14th round. If Ward never sees the field then I will still be happy because Jacobs should be producing. Let’s not worry about Bradshaw.

14.13 Marc Bulger, QB, Stl
My QB1 is relatively weak in Vince Young, so I wanted a good QB2 in hopes that one of Young and Bulger does better than projected this season. Bulger certainly has that ability as he is just a season removed from throwing for 4300 yards. However, he is an injury risk and I'm not expecting a return to his glory days with this selection.

14.14 Kenny Watson, RB, Cin
The RB situation in CIN appears to be a mess. Perry seems lightly penciled in as the starter, and I’d think Rudi will have a role at some point. But when you have a mess like that, I’d think a consistent guy like Kenny Watson could have some value. He was serviceable when he filled in last year, and I’m hoping those opportunities arise when BAL and SDG have their bye weeks.

15.01 Justin Gage, WR, Ten
Chris Johnson and Alge Crumpler might be the 2 best receivers in TEN, but Yahoo projects Gage to get 107 looks this year. It seems like he is likely to improve on his 55 catches and 750 yds from last year, so if those rise to 900 yds and 6 TDs, he’ll be a legit option for bye-week fill-ins, which I might need with Reggie Brown’s hammy.

Last year Hall was limited due to injury, yet he still was the 23rd highest scoring WR on a per game scale. If he retains his role as the return man, this could turn out to be a pretty good value pick, not to mention he's also currently third on the Rams' WR depth chart.

I've had him on my roster every year he wasn't ineligible. I'm surprised I waited this long to draft him. I mean, we all pretty much knew he'd be reinstated. I wanted to get another defensive player here. Looked through the available LB's and DL's and figured I'd go with the thinner position. Although I expect a number of LB's to be taken before my next pick there still looks to be a good number of quality line backers for subsequent picks. And who knows, maybe three out of four picks being defensive lineman may cause a run. I like Kerney's potential for a high number of sacks in addition to an average number of tackles.

15.08 Ellis Hobbs, DB, NE

Terrence McGee lite.

I’ll admit upfront that this is a speculative pick. Last year, Hobbs had the fourth-highest point total among DBs. That was generated by part time activity on defense, and 911 kick return yards, plus one KR TD.

This year, with the departure of [undrafted], Hobbs should be used more heavily on defense. If he can up his defensive production while maintaining his KR duties, he could be a very valuable DB indeed.

On the other hand, kick return duties are a slippery thing to project. If he plays more heavily on defense, the Pats could decide to reduce his KR opportunities. That would probably screw up the whole thing.

We’ll just have to see how it plays out. But as a 15th round pick and my 5th IDP, it doesn’t seem like the downside is too great.

I'm not real happy with this pick ;I should have had him stuck a little further down in my queue as it got hit pretty hard before it got back to me,so he's just a bit of security. His "groin" injury appears to be mostly conditioning according to a couple of sites, and I just hope he can give me a decent game by 1 or 2 of my bye weeks.

15.10 Matt Leinart QB ARI

When I selected Philip Rivers, I knew that I had to take another QB sooner rather than later. Marc Bulger kept on sliding and was preparing to draft him, but I waited too long and he went off the board. That said, Leinart is a former first-round NFL Entry Draft pick and has two excellent WRs to throw the ball to.

I felt good about my QBs at this stage...alas, shortly after selecting Leinart he had that atrocious pre-season game and Kurt Warner was then named the starter. Disaster could be looming here!

This was a tough pick for me. I was looking for more backup offense and nothing was really thrilling me. Even this pick doesn't thrill me too much. Betts is a good RB stuck behind a better one. If Portis gets injured it could be a great pick. If he doesn't, then Betts will probably be waiver fodder. All that being said, Betts was probably the best backup RB left on the board.

Time to get my 2nd LB. Looked over a few guys, but no one jumped out at me. Then I looked a Rivers, and got kinda excited. This guy has a chance to make a huge impact in his rookie season. He has led the Bengals in tackles is 2 of 3 preseason games, that trend should continue into the season. He has a chance to be this years Patrick Willis.

16.01 Brandon Jackson RB GNB
Took my forth RB with this pick, and I think that this is a position that I will need help with. Rudi Johnson doesn’t look like he will be a big player this year, apparently they are shopping him, and I kinda expect him to be cut. I took Jackson because basically he is one break for him away from starting, and the guy he is behind has an injury, even though it looks like he will be back. We will see how things play out in the season.

Miller is one of the low risk/high reward TEs that I targeted before the draft.

16.07 Andre Carter, DL, Was

Back in the 8th round, I came close to drafting Jared Allen. Allen is projected to be the top DL by a significant margin, and I saw one analysis that even suggested that he should be the first IDP taken (and not just the first DL). From a value-based perspective, the case for Allen was compelling. But after a fair amount of thought, I decided to pass.

Why? Because I could probably wait 10 rounds (or more) to get an alternative DL who would average about 2 points less per game. Being able to wait that long to pick up an alternate seemed valuable. Maybe my logic was flawed – and in fact, I waited only 8 rounds, not 10. But the other reason was that I already had Allen on another team, and I figured I didn’t need to double up on the injury risk.

So why am I jumping in now? I don’t think the available corps of lineman is at significant risk of running thin. But the other facet I like from a DL is a late bye week. I probably won’t draft a backup DL, and by having a DL with a bye in week 10, I maximize the flexibility to manage my bye week backups at other positions without any interference from the low scoring DL position.

The list of top DLs with week 10 byes was dwindling. One (Suggs) was just taken, and another was just injured last night, and uncertain to be available by the opening week. There were a couple of guys with week 9 byes who would have done almost as well. But in the absence of any other compelling pick for this round, I decided to fill the spot and move on.

Carter ranked 9th overall at DL last year, and I’m hoping that the need for opposing lines to tango with his new counterpart at the opposite end of the line will bring about more opportunities for Carter to make plays.

I'm looking to fill in my starting positions before I worry too much about depth. I've got a backup or two at the primary offensive positions, but I'm not interested in getting much more than this while sacrificing quality of starters at the IDP slot. Thornton is a solid tackler who I won't mind putting in the starting lineup every week.

I wanted to grab another LB at this point and Crowell will fit the "bill" as a 3 down LB who will make tackles and have some impact plays for the Bills at the same time,

As a player who is on the field for all downs he is a "dinosaur" in this age of specialization. There is a "run" package & a "pass" package" on most teams now-a-days. Its rare for a front 7 player to stay on the field for all 3 downs. You usually play one or the other, not both. I'm hoping Crowell's chances will allow him to make more plays. That's the idea anyway.

At this point I wanted to fill another LB position. I typically start 4 LBs, unless bye weeks make it more prudent to start a DB. I really wanted Stewart Bradley here, and thought he was under the radar enough to fall to me. In this league, no one flies under the radar for long. But Farrior is not a bad option either. Like Tatupu, he’s been on several of my teams and always seems to put up respectable tackle numbers. He’s getting old, but hopefully he’s got something left in the tank.

17.01 Jason Taylor DL MIAI added Taylor to my queue, went out for awhile, and then learned of his injury after my pick was made. At least it appears he’ll only be out a short period of time, and hopefully it won’t linger. But I’m quickly accumulating an infirmary instead of a football team. Taylor was the top-dog among DL not too long ago, and I think he mailed it in last year in Miami. I’m interested to see what he can do in Washington opposite Andre Carter. The Skins haven’t had a good pass-rush in a long time.

17.08 Arizona defense
Over the years, I’ve become convinced that team defense preseason rankings are highly speculative. For example, last year most analysts pointed to Baltimore and Chicago as the top defenses in August. By the end of the year (using our scoring system), Baltimore ranked #26 and Chicago finished tied for 12th. The year before, Carolina was the preseason favorite, but didn’t finish anywhere near the top.

So this year, I decided to wait until much later than I had in past years. And frankly, my pick of Arizona might have survived through to round 24. But I thought that, once I had identified them as my choice, I might as well jump.

Why Arizona? They open the season against SF and Miami in the first two weeks. Those seem like reasonably attractive opponents. By that time, I’ll probably have picked up a different defense off the F/A list. Last year, I picked up Tennessee that way (prior to week 5), and they finished as the #9 defense overall. Frankly, if Tennessee had still been available, I might have taken them again.

To those who drafted Minnesota and San Diego this year, good luck. If they do perform as projected, they may be worth 6th and 7th round picks. But the experience of the past few years suggests otherwise.

Crowder has been considered the heir apparent to Zach Thomas for years, and now he gets his "Mike" spot in the lineup. How close will he come to Zach's #s I don't know, but the pool of talent around him isn't great, so he may actually get a ton of tackles.

17.11 Adewale Ogunleye DL CHI
Pretty solid pass rusher and run stopper. If he can duplicate his 100 rifc points from last year then I will be happy. If he can't then I will cut him for someone who can.

17.13 Sidney Rice, WR, MIN
Rice will be the starting #2 WR for the Vikings and has some upside. At this point in the draft, finding a starter was hard so this was a nice find.

17.14 DeShaun Foster RB SFO
Once again, this is a backup back, that has started before, that could get the nod if there is need. Even still, I expect him to have a role in the offense this year for the niners.

18.01 Stephen Gostkowski K NWE
I was the first to take a kicker in the draft, and I did it because I wasn’t to sure where to go with this pick. I figured that if I would take a kicker, it would have to be one that would be in a high powered offense, so Gostkowski was the choice. I actually wanted him, so that is also why I stretched with this pick, even though kickers are generally taken after round 20.

18.02 Roman Harper DB NOR
Harper scored alot of points last year and is one of those DB's that is probably better in fantasy than in real life because QB's are not afraid to throw his way. Harper can still make plays back there and is young with some nice upside so I think he will be a nice fill-in and perhaps an every week starter.

18.04 Nick Folk K DAL
I know kickers are lame but they do score a lot of points and none will score more than Folk this season. Hank Hill would approve of this pick and that is good enough for me.

18.05 Richard Marshall DB CAR
Yep, he's still the nickel back in Carolina, but every year, he gets his takles. I'd expect him to pass Gamble during the year at some point, and he has a serious shot a being a top 5 in scoring at the DB position. Also... has served as PR in the past, may be used there again this year? This is now my 5th straight IDP taken, and looking back at the group I've managed to put together relatively late, I think the risk in holding off on IDP payed off well.

18.06 Chad Greenway LB MIN
2 Minnesota defensive players in a row; and me a Packer fan....Chad is kind of the opposite story of my last pick, Winfield. He started out very slow but by the end of the season was playing very well. As I stated earlier I really think alot of players hit their stride the third year and I hope he can build on last years finish.

Personally I think Minnesota's defense may be as good as expected and can't really blame Favre for getting out so he didn't have to play them twice.

18.07 Brad Johnson, QB Dal
I decided a few rounds ago that if Romo gets injured, Johnson could very well be a better backup option than any of the 1st string QBs still available. And although I thought (and still think) that this pick could have been delayed well past round 20, I decided not to risk it. I had also expected that I could wait a few rounds to draft DeShaun Foster as a Gore handcuff, but misjudged that. And it only takes one manager out of 14 to foil those plans.

I figured that Johnson was critical enough to my QB contingency plans that I’d better be safe than sorry.

18.08 Keith Brooking, LB, Atl

Brooking has dropped off from being one of the top linebackers off of the board in years past. I'm sure the is attributable to his getting up there in age, but I fully expect him to pick up the 110+ tackles that he has gotten throughout his career... barring injury of course. Except for my kicker, I've essentially got my starting lineup set now. Now, it'll be a matter of looking for solid backups or sleepers with my subsequent picks (and waiver wire fodder, I suppose).

Ah another Sooner on my team. He was Big 12 defensive MVP last year if I remember right. Ya big deal. He's pretty athletic, should be starting, decent ceiling, I'll probably have to cut him but I can dream.

18.10 Jacob Hester RB SDG

Hester is insurance in case of injury or a bye week backup or trade bait depending on the circumstances. I guess you never can have enough running backs in a league, especially when you have to start two every week. In his case he in a potent offense that depends on it's rushing attack to set the table for it's offense and LT takes a beating every game. Hester is one play away from being in the game.

18.11 Aaron Schobel DL BUF

We have to start a DL and Schobel should produce top-10 (if not top-5!) numbers at the DL position. He plays every down and, the past four seasons, he's averaged more than 45 solo tackles and 10 sacks a year. A safe pick..

18.12 D'Qwell Jackson LB CLE
I’m drafting another LB coming off of an injury. I like the value for Jackson here. He played 13 games last year had 75 solo tackles. If he can play a whole season he could be good for 100 solos.

Two years ago they were amazing. Last year they stunk. Hopefully they'll find a middle ground this season so I can play matchups with my other D (Titans).

18.14 Jeff Garcia, QB, TB

I probably waited a little too long to get a backup QB given McNabb’s injury issues in recent seasons. Garcia is so old he didn’t have birthday candles as a kid because they didn’t have fire yet, and TB doesn’t exactly have the receiving weapons that some of other QBs in this “close your eyes and hope you don’t wind up with negative points” tier do (namely Jon Kitna and the ARZ QB TBA), but the other options were really getting scary, so I’ll hope for a good week 7 from Garcia and good health for McNabb.
