0 Subject: RIFC 2009: Qualifying Leagues

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Jul 16, 2009, 09:54

Now that the managers for the 2009 RIFC have been announced, it is time to start forming qualifying leagues.

There will be two AAA qualifying leagues, and spots in those leagues will be reserved on a priority system. For those not eligible for a AAA league, one or more AA leagues will be formed, depending on interest and on finding commissioners.

As a preamble to soliciting interest in these leagues, let me recap the "expectations" that I sent out with RIFC Invitations this year:
1. You will actively manage your team throughout the regular season and the playoffs (if applicable).

2. You will regularly check the RotoGuru message forum to stay up to date on current league developments, especially during the preseason, but also during the season.

3. You will make your best efforts to keep the draft moving along. If you have conflicts during the draft that will delay your responsiveness, you will make active use of queues or designated pickers to ensure that you do not hold up the draft.

4. You will post a timely, written rationale of each pick. Rationales are typically several sentences long, and posted with a 2-round lag. (This is optional for Qualifying leagues)

5. You will provide an active email address to others in the league so that you can typically be reached daily. You agree to regularly check that email address during the preseason and the season, and to update league members if your email address changes. You will alert the others in the league if there are times that you expect to be unavailable or unreachable.

6. You will behave at all times in a respectful, cooperative manner.

Each QL must select a Commissioner, and each must choose a site to host the league. As noted in the RIFC thread, the choice of hosting site for the RIFC is under review. There is no need for a QL to use the same hosting site as the RIFC. I will leave it to the commissioner of each league to make the decision for that league (or to put it to a league vote, if they wish). I am also happy to discuss funding options with each commissioner.

QLs are encouraged to use the kafenated.net “On The Clock” software for their drafts. The cost is very modest ($10, which will be paid for by RotoGuru.com), and the automated features (email alerts, queues, etc.) greatly facilitate a timely process. However, I understand that MFL.com has a very powerful draft engine, and if a league chooses that site for hosting, they may also use that draft software. The RIFC will consider this as well.

Each league will have 14 teams, so we will need to fill 28 AAA slots. I recommend that the following priorities be used in filling those slots:

RIFC teams not remaining in the RIFC.
Seven teams from each AAA league (5 of those making the playoffs, plus two others)
All AA playoff teams (excluding the winner, which is already in the RIFC)

This list identifies the following 28 teams:
Holt
DaBomb
Tree
Deepsnapper
Nerfherders
Slowhand
Electro
davepyro
Donkey Hunter
Ref
Loki
mjd
Judy
Building 7
Frick
twilson
GoatLocker
Valkyrie
Beezer
Pancho Villa
TD
Jaydog
gurudan
vampireslayer
Gangsta Brizzilz
Kyle
Sandwich Statics
Promize

(Note that in some cases, the 2008 team name is listed when the manager’s name was not readily apparent.)

I suggest that we form a "first-come, first-served" waiting list for any remaining AAA openings. The following teams will have a priority ranking on this waiting list:
Doug, Weykool, “Masters of my Domain”, “AAA Bound”.

The first two on that list finished 9-10 in AAA2, but were leap-frogged by teams ranked 11-12 with more points. The latter two teams finished in an 8th place tie in the AA league, but missed out on the playoffs based on points. These four teams will get the first four open AAA spots (assuming that some managers listed above on the priority list will decline or be no-shows), first come, first served. If there are remaining openings for a AAA league, those may be filled by any team which played in a previous year’s QL or the RIFC, first come first served. If you wish to be on the waiting list, please post your interest ASAP.

As a caveat, if there are interested managers who took last year off but would otherwise be qualified for AAA based on their 2007 results, please speak up quickly, and I will consider a special accommodation.

This thread will be for you to indicate your interest in participating. Please post your handle, an email address, whether you qualify for one of the AAA priority slots, and whether you are willing to serve as a commissioner. (There are no pre-qualifications for a AA spot.)

Before actually forming the two AAA leagues, I would like to have both AAA commissioners identified. Judy has already volunteered to serve as one AAA commish, so we need only one other AAA Commissioner. Once both commissioners are appointed, the two AAA leagues can begin to assemble – but not before then.

Please note that if you do not leave an email address, or if you leave one but do not check it, you may be skipped when leagues are eventually filled. Every year there are a few people who express interest early, but then fail to appear when the rubber meets the road. It is the responsibility of everyone who is interested to stay connected to the recruiting process. It is not the responsibility of Commissioners to use extraordinary means to reach anyone. While there is no immediate urgency, once spots become limited, you must be responsive.

I do not have emails for many of the managers on the list above. As a courtesy, if you have addresses for anyone on that list (or can identify the manager based on team name), I encourage you to send them an email notification of this thread.

Have I forgotten anything? Perhaps those involved in last year's league formation process can suggest other guidelines for making the process run as smoothly as possible.

"AAA bound" was my team. As Guru's post mentioned, I'd be happy to take any AAA spot that ends up open.
Also, if anyone needs help contacting anyone from last year's AA let me know, I should have their emails.

I'll also make a recommendation that there should be a preference in AA for players who played the previous season.

I'm "Master of My Domain" from the list above. I'm in for whatever I end up being eligible for...if it ends up being AA and we're still looking for a commish I could probably handle it...it would be my 3rd year in AA. I'd like a shot at AAA if I get the chance though!

Based on wolfer's previous experience as an Invitational League commissioner (which I am always grateful for), and his experience with Fantrax as a hosting site, I have offered him the chance to commish the second AAA league, which will be hosted at Fantrax. Judy will commish the other AAA league at the hosting site of her (or the league's) choice.

By advancing wolfer to a AAA spot, it is possible that the AAA leagues will be overbooked. That's unlikely, as there are usually a few no-shows - but in case every qualified AAA manager opts to return, then the last one to respond may get left out. Them's the breaks.

I'm still looking for a AA commissioner. As wolfer has aptly demonstrated (and there have been other precedents as well), a AA commish sometimes gets the benefit of advancement to a AAA league the following year in the event that there is a shortage of AAA commissioner volunteers.

Judy and wolfer, please start your league threads in the Football Standings & Leagues forums.

This is now a modified post. I have offered to Commish the AA league, but my better half has reminded me of several items possibly occurring in August and September that would br hugr obstacles to the commish job.

As a result, let me offer myself as a fallback candidate to commish AA.

I do want a team on AA.

If I can add to Taxman's comments, I similarly can't commish this year because of other things going on in my life. But I've done it a couple of times for RIFC and if anyone is on the fence about volunteering I'll be happy to help the commish as much as possible. Also, I can say from experience that Guru and Judy are both very very helpful with setting things up and answering questions along the way. So if anyone is unsure about doing it, the resources are there and its not as tough as it may seem.

I've actually already set up an AA league in MFL to "give" to whomever takes over. We would
need to coordinate with Guru and trouble shoot to see that I did it correctly. Right now it
matches AAA#1. (MFL has a nice "duplicate league" feature so once you get it right, you just
make another copy, rename it, etc.)

It looks like both AAAs have filled up so I will sign up for AA.

I will volunteer to commish as well, on Fantrax, subject to Guru's approval.

If anyone else really really wants to commish, I will step aside. But the draft in the RIBC AA league I commished this year was the fastest draft any of its participants had seen and, I believe, the fastest draft in any RIBC league ever so I will step up to ensure anyone wavering about whether to play that this thing will get off the ground.

We may need to do some recruiting.

I will have some travel issues in late August that may find me with out computer access. But if you or another manager are able & willing to stay in contact with me by phone, my OTC designated Picker can choose any available player if queue choices are set up correctly.

Any AA player that can help please let me know.
