0 Subject: RIFC 2011: Draft Discussion

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Sun, Aug 21, 2011, 22:32

The RIFC draft does not officially start until Wednesday. Early picks are permitted, but not expected. The clock will be set at 6 hours and will be active on Wednesday morning, with a moratorium from 1am-7am EDT. Please note: The clock will continue to run on weekends.

People at the endpoints of the draft have only one single time limit to make their consecutive picks. Similarly, the clock will be manually advanced to skip past anyone who already has a pick in arrears, unless other arrangements have been made in advance of that pick.

Remember that we are using a “Banzai” draft order, which differs from the traditional snake in that the order of the third round (and only that round) is reversed. The MFL system shows the correct order.

We will maintain a draft discussion thread here, but it will probably not be used extensively. If you know that you have pending time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone to potential availability issues, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette. I’ll also use this thread for general announcements about the draft.

Note that trades during the draft are allowed. Trades should be announced here, and may include any combination of picks and/or players.

Players who are not yet listed at myfantasyleague.com may be drafted, and if so, a placeholder player will be assigned to your roster until that player is available. Once the draft is complete, you may no longer sign (or protect) an unlisted player.

Please be sure you understand all of the scoring and roster rules for this league. The current rules will be copied into post 2 of this thread.

Rationales will be expected for each pick, but delayed by two rounds. When we near the end of round two, I will set up a thread for those.

Please refrain from mentioning undrafted players, either in this thread, or in your posted rationale.

If you wish to track the draft without directly accessing the mfl site (e.g., if that site is blocked from your access at work), the following links may be used:

List view: http://66.221.169.118/cgi-bin/mfldraft.pl?league=43096
Grid view: http://66.221.169.118/cgi-bin/mfldraftgrid.pl?league=43096

This will also allow you to keep tabs on other RIFC drafts as well. Note, however, that this is strictly a viewing mechanism. It will not allow you to actually enter a draft pick, or set up a queue. For that, you will still need to log directly into the mfl site - or else email the commish to do it.

Stepping out for a bit, should be back around 11PM ET. No time for a 20 player queue right now.

I'm in Tamaqua, like 2 hours or so north of Philly. It's only me without power basically. A tree came down on the lines and there's like 3 houses and a high school without power. Not even sure if they're working on it yet. We didn't get hit real hard, but there were trees down in some places. Unlucky with the placement of that one. Internet is apparently still out at my house too, since a friend that lives nearby is still without it and it's the same ISP.

Another issue with MFL drafting. Some guys who changed teams have not been put with their new teams yet. In the player listings, the bye week is also not correct. They didn't bother to change from them 2010 to 2011. Now you could argue that we are looking at the 2010 stats, but it certainly does not help that the 2010 bye week is still there. That is a useless column -- so fix it or delete it!

Go to the pull down for reports--> players-->choose any category and look at the far right column. There is no 4 bye week and the others are not correct either.

Very confusing as you look at the 2010 stats and assume that the bye week is 2011 for drafting purposes.

Yeah, don't know what to say about that. Since it's last years stats, it makes sense to have last year's bye week. But definitely could be confusing if people don't realize.

By the way, I just looked at the PPL site and they have an outage center page. Over 12k without power in just my county. Just got off the phone with my mom and apparently there's a lot of people without power around us as well. Just doesn't have anything to do with the tree on our line.

Lehigh county has 30k+ http://www.pplelectric.com/Outage+Center

Their twitter says possibly 4-5 days to restore all power. Hopefully mine is restored tonight since of the 4 places on our power line, one is a high school and school starts tomorrow. If not, my availability may be sketchy the next few days since the shop I'm in currently will be open for business.

sheesh Fugazi's got 6 RB, 5 WR and 2 TE.

Does he know he can only play 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE and 1 WR/TE per week?
I would go nuts trying to make those choices and the bench guys would outplay the starter anyway...

Cute, I may not have power back until the 31st. I'm extremely pissed. So yeah, I shouldn't have a huge issue getting picks in, but they may not be as timely as normal.

Best part is we run our own business, so we're completely screwed without power. All for 1 friggin tree.

Good move Guru, but surprised you did not make it earlier.
I was wondering who would take V Young. I was considering him for a while but decided to wait. If Vick (Your #1 QB) goes down the Iggles offense will continue with Young at the helm. But I finally decided that Rivers was better than Young and so ultimately decided to pass.

FYI - It's just past 4:30AM in Austria right now (where I believe youngroman lives). He had a queue set for his last pick (3 hours ago), but most likely, we'll be waiting for him to wakeup in about 3-4 hours from now. I'd suggest making a queue in this "downtime". That said, it was another great day speed wise.

Finally my vision of getting this draft length cut down dramatically has come to fruition. Once everyone got accustomed, mostly, to MFL, the following year was blazing compared to previous years. No reason all RIFC drafts can't be around this length, as long as people make liberal use of queues and you avoid power/internet outages or anything else drastic.

Putting this in blue so that it stands out among the raft of rationale posts.

Please post your remaining rationales in this thread. That is the first order of business following the draft.

For now, I have locked out everyone's ability to make add/drop transactions. At some point, we'll run a post-draft waiver period, with priorities in the reverse order of round 1.

Agree that it was almost too fast for me as well.

Pretty amazing recap of waiting time at the bottom of the draft page. Only three people averaged over an hour, and the longest was 1:11 - Fugazi, who doesn't even have an internet connection! There have been years when the average time for the entire draft was around 1 hour.

For consideration next year:

Change the following rule from
"Immediately following the draft, undrafted players will be subject to a priority claiming process, with priorities equal to the reverse of the first round draft order."

to

"Immediately following the draft, undrafted players will be subject to a priority claiming process, with priorities equal to the reverse of the draft pick selection order."

I just entered the remaining rationales. Thanks to the twelve that stayed current throughout the draft.

Two of you missed one rationale - probably by oversight.

Youngroman is missing 19.07 Todd Heap
Judy is missing 22.07 Steve Smith
Fugazi is missing rounds 14-24
Tree is missing rounds 16-24

Fugazi has no internet connection, so I'm grateful that he was able to stay current on the draft through his brother, Holt. Still want those remaining rationales ASAP, however.

Tree is on the internet all the time, so I'm not sure what his excuse is. Laggard! (hey, it worked once before...)

I will set up a draft recap thread shortly.

We still need to decide when to run the post-draft waivers. Typically, it's about 2 days after the completion of the draft, but we've never finished so far in advance of the season. Does that timing still make sense?

sorry thought I fad posted this already:

22.07 Steve Smith WR PHL
This is really a fill in pick as I needed another WR to cover the Week 11 byes of A Brown, A Johnson and E Sanders. Smith began practicing for the Iggles this week and since I won’t need him until later that’s OK. He was a reliable target for Eli posting consistent, steady stats. He has consistently averaged around 11 yards/catch and in 2009 had an incredible 107 receptions. Now THAT is just not gonna happen in Philly. He is listed as the #6 WR, but frankly, that’s a joke. I see him as the #3 behind DJax, Maclin, 3 x (undrafted guys). He’s better than #4 and 5 for sure. We will need to see how he recovers from his injury. Fortunately I have time to see how the Iggles/Vick do or do not use him. He might be the first to go if I need to pick up someone else. Sorry Steve.

Tree is on the internet all the time, so I'm not sure what his excuse is. Laggard!

A.D.D., big time.

16.05 Marion Barber, RB, Chi
This is the part of the draft where i think people start going for depth, and locating those guys who pay end up paying dividends by season's end. Barber is one of those guys. all accounts have him running on fresh legs, and i think he's going to really piss off Matt Forte owners by stealing TDs, and by season's end, carries.

17.10 Charles TIllman, DB, Chi
We have to draft DBs, right? ok, cool. Tillman gets me picks and tackles.

18.05 Hines Ward, WR, Pit
A combination of depth, sleeper, and value. Ward might be the #3 WR on the Steelers, but he's a solid #3 on a fantasy team here, and he's going much later than that. i think i'll get a lot of value here.

19.10 Anthony Armstrong, WR, Was
Boom or bust, and a depth choice. Another guy i think is going much later than he oughta, and at this point, again, i think value is an important component of depth.

20.05 Tashard Choice, RB, Dal
I've always liked Choice. I have no idea why he hasn't really gotten the chance in Dallas. He's still got two guys in front of him, but this time one's brittle, and the other is a rookie. if he a gets a chance to play, he's gonna do some damage. but that's a big if.

21.10 Andy Dalton, QB, Cin
Romo's got an early bye, so i wanted to go ahead and draft a backup to cover that. Dalton was the best of the best, and his match up during Romo's bye week is a reasonably decent one.

22.05 Jerome Harrison, RB, Det
Did i mention depth? ok, i did. Javid Best strikes me as fragile, so Harrison should earn some starts. a RB doing that who is taken this deep in the draft, is value.

23.10 Josh Brown, PK, StL
kicker. dome. high-scoring offense. Kurt Warner as QB. ok, well, not that last part. and the part before that remains to be seen. but hey, he's a kicker. in a dome. right, they still play in a dome?

24.05 Joe Haden, DB, Cle
i needed anther DB. Joe Haden is a DB. Odd to say a DB is a sleeper, but i think Haden is. All 6 of his interceptions came in the last 11 games of the season. he's got great speed, and a knack for the ball and ball carrier. honestly, i really like this pick.

Just run waivers starting now until Wednesday IMO. That way people can start putting in their players now and they'll actually run a day before the season begins, leaving the most amount of time for injuries and such to happen.

here is my missing rationale. don't know why I missed to post it.

19.07 Todd Heap, TE, ARI
gone are the days where Todd Heap was drafted as a top 5 tight end. the receiving corp of Arizona is questionable behind Larry Fitzgerald. Kevin Kolb might look for Heap often, which would be good for his value. i picked Heap a bit as an insurance for a little banged up Kellen Winslow. the question is now, which one of my TE's will see more games on the field and which one will see more games on my team. I hope the sum of he 2nd total is 16.

This might be a dumb question but is it known for a fact that a sack is also scored as a tackle for a loss? or is it possible that they are scored like saves and holds are (you get one or the other but not both)? I was just looking at 2010 stats and C Long had 8.5 sacks but only 8 tfl. Made me wonder.

for Fugazi

14.11 Matt Cassell, QB, KC

Nothing fancy here. Nothing more than a fill-in on Rodgers' bye week, hopefully. Wanted Antonio Brown but Judy stole him so just went with the boring backup QB.

15.04 Lance Kendricks, TE, StL

this one was basically poor communication between the brothers holt. Fugazi tells holt that he wants Kendricks late in the draft, holt can't contact fugazi right away when his 15th rd pick comes up and just takes Kendricks, probably a few rds early. Kendricks will be an important part of the Ram offense. He is more of a receiver than a blocker. Has looked great in the preseason and may be a top 5 TE before too long. Still, he's a Ram and probably would have been ignored for a few more rounds. That being said, when you want a certain player, sometimes you have to reach to make sure you get them.

16.11 LaMarr Woodley, LB, PIT

Major homer pick. All Steelers are the best and Woodley is a Steeler so he is the best LB to take here. Woodley is a big play maker, OLB in the 3-4 means some sacks and int's, maybe a td. His tackle numbers were down last year but should bounce back some. He's on the cover of SI (go look ) so you know he's good! The phone call on this was "your pick is up" - "is Woodley there?" - "yes" - "take him!" - "ok bye"

17.04 Karlos Dansby, LB, MIA

Highest LB available according to an average of the idp cheat sheets being used. Dansby has always been solid, he's healthy, and the news on him is all positive this preseason.

18.11 Sean Weatherspoon, LB, ATL

Again, the highest LB from idp cheatsheets being used. No bad news, some good news, that was it. 2010 1st rd draft pick, very athletic, decent upside pick.

19.04 Morgan Burnett, DB, GB

Moving on from LB to DB, the direction here was to use the idp cheat sheets but go with young DB's without an established ceiling. Burnett is a sleeper pick, plays strong safety, some think he could be a breakout player this year. Probably just the first of many DB's in Fugazi's idp revolving door.

20.11 Alterraun Verner, DB, TEN

Just another youthful DB high on the IDP cheat sheets. May or may not be a part of team fugazi come week two (or one?). Played well last year but may not even be #1 on the depth chart now.
