Subject: RIFC 2013: Getting started

I am pleased to announce the 14 managers for the 2013 RIFC: Holt Bonka youngroman Wiggs TD Khahan Smth32 s R twilson Judy IAC Kyle Promise Guru
This list includes the top-6 seeds from last year's RIFC (including the playoff winner), the playoff winner from each AAA league, all other AAA teams ranked in the top 3 for the regular season (including ties), and the (playoff) winner of the AA league. Although this comprises 15 teams, one manager declined the invitation. So the 14-team league is full.
Next steps: 1. Sign-ups for qualifying leagues. I will begin by notifying all of last year’s managers by email. Please check the address that you provided for your league last season. Those emails should go out shortly. 2. Discussion of possible rules changes. (We can use this thread for that. I'll post a recap of the 2012 rules momentarily.) 3. Discussion of any other issues that should be resolved before the start of the draft.
Once again, I plan to have the RIFC and all qualifying leagues hosted at myfantasyleague.com. The drafts will be held at MFL as well.
RotoGuru will pay the cost of all RIFC leagues. A voluntary donation of $5 per manager is suggested to help defray the cost. (Managers who have already contributed this year are exempted.) If you wish to donate to the cause, please see the instructions on the GuruPatron info page .
Last year, the draft began on August 26, and was completed in 7 days. This year, I would expect to draft under a similar time frame – starting on either August 25 or 26. The first game of the NFL regular season is on Thursday, September 5.

Do we have a potential start date for this? I only ask because I know I will be moving into a new house hopefully next weekend, fingers crossed, and we have twins due on Sept. 9. I will have access but not really sure how much :)

I've consistently been suggesting a start date of Aug 25. No one has yet pushed back against that.
Expectation is that the draft will take about a week.

Yeah, 25th is good for me. Just going to be busy with 4 drafts starting that day, one of them a live draft. Should be interesting.

A quick check of the old Draft Recap threads, re-enforces my opinion. Especially in 2008/2009 did Smith32 get a special acknowledgment for his drafting prowess.

BTW. That's one of the big things I tend to like about RotoGuru.
It's always had a focus on documenting (Rationals/Recaps). That makes it interesting to look back even a few years later to see "what's changed" and "what's the same".

Just a thought -
Does it make sense to use the MFL draft page to post our rationales (in the comment column)? The advantage is that it allows everyone to directly post in the proper spot without having to use placeholders - so it would significantly simplify my work! I'm not sure if the format would make things look to stretched - but I'm inclined to give it a shot.
If the formatting is unsatisfactory, I could probably copy it over to a traditional thread at some point for archival purposes.

I actually did this last year in the AAA a bit. Quite a few people did.
It was nice and convenient and easy to use. Though, admittedly it made looking at the draft results page a little sloppy sometimes. But that's purely an aesthetic issue as it throws off the size of the different boxes.

Re 62,67,69 - Thanks IAC. I think you and I tend to approach the draft similarly (and/or use similar sources for our research), because your team always looks good to me post-draft. So I am glad we are not too close in the order.
I also went back and saw that I drafted beside Judy in AA last year and then went 20-6, so maybe that is a good omen. I probably stole everyone she wanted.

Can also set up a spreadsheet on google docs and allow people to edit. Can copy the draft order in then let people fill in the player and comments once they make their picks.

The disadvantage to doing rationales at MFL is that people outside the league might be less inclined to read them. And they also might be more difficult to go back and read a year or two down the line. Kind of nice having rationales archived here on the forum. Would there be any simple way to copy the rationales to the forum when the draft is done?

How about what we did in AAA and do them in groups of five players/rounds. I thought the mfl ones were way too brief. I like the thought that most people put into their rationales and that doesn't really fit into the mfl format. Some people ke to write short stories and they are much fun to read!
That way guru would not have to do the placeholder, copy/paste stuff. Groups of five gives a story too as you can see the thought process in the sequential picks. Guru would just have to nudge the missing folks to get cracking!

I think post 76 is most compelling factor to keep the rationales here on the boards. But maybe modify them as judy suggested. Put rationales up for rounds 1-5 and to cut down on the work people can post them in clumps.
Or if you'd want to keep them organized I can help w/ the transfer from here to the rationale thread.

The only rule change is that blind bidding will be conditional.
We didn't vote on that. Decided by Guru fiat.

I don't like the five-round grouping. We'll still have multiple laggards, especially when we are blasting through 3-4 rounds per day, and I think it flows better when it's all in sequence.
I could fairly easily copy from the MFL format into a forum thread - certainly after the draft ends, maybe even during the draft on occasion.
Maybe I could have people draft each rationale in a forum thread (out of sequence, as they come), and paste those into sequence at MFL, as the draft progresses, and then copy the entire draft back into a forum thread at the end. While that may seem like a circuitous route, I'm quite sure it would simplify my effort. At a minimum, it eliminates the task of setting up placeholders, which gets to be a real pain.

[83] PPR discussion never seemed to get much traction this year, and has been voted down several times in the past. So I never bothered putting it up again. There is some value in year-to-year consistency.
