      Wed, Oct 29, 2003, 12:26 		Once again, theres a problem with the scoring for my team, but this time if affects the outcome of the game.

Carolina OL:
223 yards rushing - 16 points
2 offensive TDs - 2 points
1 sack allowed - -1 point

16 + 2 - 1 = 17, not 9

This means my team scored 252 points, not 244, thus beating beebop 252 to 247.

Also, Arizona ST blocked a punt. I forget if only blocked field goals and extra points count, but if punts count too, then they scored 9 not 6. This would bump my score up to 255.

      Wed, Oct 29, 2003, 13:17 		I had Jason Taylor tackle somebody for a safety, which seems like a pretty big deal, at least equivalent to a sack. Instead, I got a measly 2 points for the "tackle".

I would propose that next year we add points for our IDPs if they score a safety (if the site will handle it)... probably 6 (equal to a TD, Sack, or INT). Not only does it score 2 points for your team, but your team also then gets posession of the ball on the ensuing kick! It's like 2 points AND a turnover! And they are very rare, so I don't think 6 points is unusually high. Besides, it would have given me the win this week. =-)

      Wed, Oct 29, 2003, 16:59 		Rod Burnett made the sack that caused the fumble in the endzone. I was looking closely at the play live, and I *guess* that since Taylor was the closest defender when the Charger player covered the ball, he gets credited the tackle and the safety. In reality though Taylor had nothing to do with the play, Burnett made the sack and forced the fumble in the endzone. I figured he would get total credit for the safety.

Oh, and all blocks count. kicks, extrapoints, punts. If, in the NFL.com Gamebook, the team has anything under BL in the special teams defense breakdown, then they get a block.

      Wed, Oct 29, 2003, 17:16 		If the Charger player who recovered the ball had advanced it out of the end zone, it would not have been a safety. Therefore, Burnett could not appropriately be credited for the safety by merely causing the fumble... but Taylor, making the tackle (albeit merely by contacting the player already on the ground) is thus appropriately credited with the safety.

      Thu, Oct 30, 2003, 10:45 		I agree with the scoring on that play. I'm just saying that in general safeties are recorded by the player who made the play. Burnett got 11 points from that play. And most of the times, those kinds points come out of plays like safeties, so there's no lack of points awarded in those situations. They keep this stat in college, but I would like to see the NFL keep a stat of tackles for losses. Then we could award defenders for tackles that lose yards, regardless of whether it is the QB. Because, really, what's the difference?

      Thu, Oct 30, 2003, 11:08 		Safety = points + turnover, even if there was no fumble involved (as there was on this play). For this reason it should be worth more than a regular sack, etc. IMHO.

I think it would be great if the NFL kept track of tackles for losses, but if they did I wouldn't value them as highly as sacks (maybe 3 points vs. 6). Sacks tend to average more negative yardage (guesstimating 4-8 yards on average) wheras "tackles for a loss" (not including sacks) probably average more like 2-3 yards. Just guessing, but seems about reasonable. The only time you usually get a "big" tackle for a loss is a blown trick play, like a reverse, or an RB who tries to reverse field after the sweep to one side is blocked, etc... but there are a lot more of the 1 or 2 yard losses on running plays variety, which I don't think are comparable to the average sack. Anyway, it's all just hypothetical, but interesting to discuss!

      Thu, Nov 06, 2003, 20:00 		Cowboys and Lazio... received both your trade offers. Was out of town so I didn't have time to respond until now.

Cowboys - Hard for me to give up Faulk. You did offer some nice pieces in the deal at other positions, but I think I can get by at those positions with what I've got, and at RB I really need Faulk. It looks like Taylor is still the main guy in JAC, but will be splitting carries a little bit more so that the other guys (Chris M-Fer and Toefield) can see some reps.

Lazio - Moss looks to have finally matured and I expect him to be a top tier receiver for years to come. As such, I think I've got to hold on to him as a keeper player. Porter is the only guy you offered who I would keep, and I consider him a major downgrade from Moss, especially in light of the Raiders current woes.

      Thu, Nov 06, 2003, 20:07 		yes, but i did that offer because i tought you would have wanted to upgrade other positions for THIS year. favre is a top 5 qb, smith and porter combined would have done for moss (ok, at least you wouldn't loose more than 13 points per week, dunn is a plug in at rb whenever you need even if it's hard to predict his up and downs and ty law is a stud db......anyway, if you don't like it i understand....

Taylor is a 2nd tier RB, compared to westbrook a fourth of fifth tier, chambers is a third tier WR and warrick is a fourth or fifth tier. I don't understand the logic. Teams agreed no big deal, I just don't understand.

      Sun, Nov 09, 2003, 19:39 		I was offered a deal by Bags of Taylor for Marshall Faulk (other players involved but those were the key 2)... but got the impression he was trying to trade for Faulk, not that his goal was to unload Taylor. I would have traded him Thomas or K Faulk (both better options than Westbrook IMHO) as well as one of my receivers (other than Moss) for Chambers... but oh well. Guess I just didn't undestand how desperately he was trying to offload Taylor that he'd take just about anything for him. Oh well!

Just to defend myself here, I feel Westbrook and Warrick will have a better finish to the season than Taylor and Chambers. I'm not saying that because W&W had a better week 11 than T&C.

      Mon, Dec 01, 2003, 17:21 		Hi all. It's been pretty dead here so I thought I would start a discussion on rule change I would like to see.

I propose that we remove the restriction on keepers that requires us to take 4 on offense and 4 on defense. We should be able to keep any 8 players from our team. I know that in my case there is just about nobody on offense that I want to keep. My offense is horrible. However, I could easily take 6 or 7 keepers on defense: players that would otherwise be taken in the first few rounds of the draft.

If the restriction will not be lifted, there should be more incentive to NOT keep players. Move the compensatory picks up in the draft. Maybe starting at round 12?

Here is an example of my options for keepers on offense:

Jeff Garcia: What happened to this guy? He's been hurt, and he hasn't played well. Probably not worth keeping when guys like Favre, Kitna, Brady will be available.
David Boston: Probably worth keeping
Peerless Price: worthless
Kennison: nearly worthless
Staley: passed over in PHI after his holdout
Pittman: never scores
Moe Williams: very good, but a second back in MN
LJ Smith: upside, but not great
Miller: Good, but no great
KC OL: My best offensive player! LOL

I'm sure there are other managers here who have the same dilemma, either on offense or defense. We should be allowed to build our teams however we like. If we want to build on defense, so be it.

      Tue, Dec 02, 2003, 06:49 		i'm pretty ok on offense, because i'll surely keep manning, edge, taylor and shockey. i've probably #1 or 2 on TE and QB and a great combo at RB......just can't pass anyone of them. i'll have to drop all my WR anyway, and it'll be a huge drop since steve smith, rod and chambers are all good options.

I don't think I would support this year because I would liked it last year and that will change for everyone year to year. I like how the league is setup that you are not rewarded for not keeping 8. Whatever the league decides because it is not a huge deal either way. If we can keep any 8 players we might want to cap how many you could keep at a certain position.

If you think you have more quality defensive keepers than you need, you might consider trying to trade one or more of them to a team with a weak defense in exchange for a keeper-worthy offensive player. You could probably deal with a non-playoff contender now, or with just about anyone during the offseason. That would be my personal preference for dealing with your type of situation (rather than changing the rule).

      Sun, Dec 07, 2003, 04:32 		I set my lineup with Carter at QB, but I want to drop Delhomme and activate Vick, making Vick my starting QB this week. However, even if Derek processes the drop of Delhomme first thing in the AM, I will unlikely be able to make the change myself before the deadline. Anyway, I won't lose any sleep over it, but if my starting QB could be changed from Carter to Vick this week I would appreciate it.

      Sun, Dec 07, 2003, 13:03 		Doug, NFL.com's Gamebook only credits the Chiefs with 94 return yards. My guess is the Game Stats page is giving some of SD's L. Johnson return yards to KC's L. Johnson. That is confirmed in the Play-by-play log.

Do we allow FA pickups once the regular season is over? There are a lot of claims placed (and I have not processed them) because I thought that we were not allowed to pickup players. However, I can not find this rule anywhere. Am I mistaken? If so, I will process the claims accordingly...

In the Sunday night game between the Saints and Giants, a blocked field goal resulted in a 64 yard return for a touchdown.

My guy: Fred Thomas, who returned the blocked ball for the touchdown.

His guy: Saints Special Teams, who got credited with the block, and according to the website, the return. (but not the yards)

So who gets what points in this situation?

Obviously the Saints ST gets the 3 points for the block. But this technically is not a kick return, as it was on a field goal and no return was set up. Even though it was special teams, I always think of defending FG's like being on defense, thus my initial reaction to the return was like a fumble return, where Thomas would get the touchdown. Because during play, if the ball is blocked backwards as this one was, it is just like a fumble. Basically a free ball.

It's a weird case that might happen half a dozen times in a season, but almost never in which it involves two 'players' on opposing fantasy teams.

Have special teams in the past been credited with blocked kicks for touchdowns? What about a blocked kick for a safety? Does the blocker get that credited to his defense score?

Do defensive players get credit for any touchdown not specifically from a run, catch, or kick return? Or is it specifically from fumble recoveries and interceptions?

Feel free to chime in and discuss.

      Mon, Dec 15, 2003, 20:44 		In my opinion, NO ST is the only "player" who should get any points. After the block, which points it should be awarded is much tougher to decide.

I dont think our league intended the return yards to be awarded to anyone, much in the same way no one is awarded points for return yards after an interception or fumble.

So were left with the TD. A field goal attempt isnt any more of a defensive situation than a punt, so I dont see any reason for an individual player (human being) to be awarded any points for a return TD. Should NO ST get points for the special teams touchdown? Last year, it would have been a clear no. This year, maybe. Last year, we only awarded points to Special Teams on kickoff and punt returns. This year, in adding the blocks, we failed to address the issue of a blocked kick returned for a TD. I say the spirit of the rules say no, NO ST should not get points for the TD. However, I can see how the rules could be interpreted to award points for a return TD on any special teams play.

My vote is 3 points for the block, nothing more.

As for blocked kicks for safeties, our rules dont award points to any player for safeties.

yesterday night i went to sleep before the game and this morning when i woke up i went to see the boxscore and i almost had an heart attack.
i saw walker with 2 td, ahman wit 1 but i would have never figured such a grat game by rice.
it didn't show the defensive points, so i crossed my fingers and started calculating fantasy totals..... dunno what the score is, but i know that it has been a great, great final. It's been a pleasure to play such a great fantasy game, and my compliments go to you and to your great fantasy knowledge. it would be an honour to win this competitive league, whoever will win.

I believe I won $12 for my finish in the playoffs and, as its a pretty small amount, I have no problem with letting Derek keep it to use for next year's fees. Im with Doug though; Id like to find another website to host our league. Im sick of all the waiver wire, lineup, and scoring problems we've had with the site we use now.

As for the draft order, Nerf is almost right. It should be:

The only reason Im "ahead" of Lazio is that I beat him head to head in Week 10, and, in our league, head to head is the first tiebreaker for teams with identical records.

I think Doug also deserves some congratulations. He scored a ton of points this year but was also had a lot scored against him. His team was much better than his record indicated. And scoring 300+ points each week of the playoffs is certainly impressive.
