"I'm in, seeing as how this league takes the least amount of effort to be in."
Nice to see that you have the same attitude about FFL as you do with sex.

Here is the dice roll website. I would guess the rolls have to be sent to Shak at: shakj@yahoo.com
From last year's rules: "This is the idea, we sort out from the bone rolls who picks 1st through 18 (100 is the best, 1 is the lowest) and more bone rolling instructions will come. Owner #1 will pick what draft position he wants in draft #1. Owner #2 will pick his slot and so forth and down to owner #18. In mirror league the owner with #18 will select what draft pick he wants first in draft #2, owner #17 will pick next and so forth down to owner #1."
How many dice would you like to roll? 1
How many sides are on each die? 100
Should anything be added or subtracted from the total roll? No
You can drop either the highest or lowest die roll (or both.) Uncheck all boxes.
The entire roll can be repeated; how many times? 0
Say what this roll is for: Survivor 2007 (and also put your team name)
Also e-mail the results to: shakj@yahoo.com

Shak, if 100 is the best, shouldn't the pecking order be the other way around? Except, of course, you posted the mirror league pecking order. Or, if the "being the best" is meaning to have the last pick. Or, if your pecking order should be read from bottom to top. Or, if "100 is best" is just another way of saying "100 is highest, meaning lowest, as in last"
Then you're alright.

It really depends on when we draft. I have to go TDY (as a new civilian...woohoo) from 6-17 August. I am a bit brain dead today but as long as it's after those dates I see no reason why I can't do the same. I forgot how I did it last year too. We might be able to make everyone free agents or something and then everyone just pick up their players after they draft them or after the draft.
However we do it, I am sure we can have it set up on time.

Switching gears on you guys just a bit but does anyone have thoughts on the Vick deal? It's sounding more and more like the NFL wants nothing to do with the media circus he would create this year. Betcha they wish they hadn't pulled the trigger on the Schaub trade.

Hard to turn a street dog into a gentleman just because he plays professional football. If he's guilty then it's just another cocky I can't be touched NFL player who thinks the rules don't apply to them. He's fun to watch and I loved his style but he knows the difference between right and wrong and should pay the price. I think the Commish told him to stay home and not bring his circus to the training camp, so Yeah I hope he's not guilty and he loves dog's so much he opens a shelter for strays!! Unforturnate for us this will be in the news all season.

I think the two divisions worked well and I don't see a reason to change. We can work it the same way we did last year, as far as selecting draft positions. As it stands now, you would select last in the IMD division, but first in the other.
I'm glad you brought up the entry fee. Last year it was 50. Is everyone happy with that? I think for the amount of entertainment we get out of it, I would not be against paying a little more.

The answer is obvious -- take the up and coming Smith over GrossMan, who will be out of the League next year.

Just to give a heads up I've already got drafts in my other leagues set up for Aug 12th and 26th. Are we doing a one day draft? might be hard to do with all the time zones and commitments. Just something to think about..Where are we drafting and when I guess is the question.

I don't normally agree with Steve, but I agree with him here. If we draft too early, not only do we not know who the starting RBs are going to be for a number of teams, but there is also the dreaded season ending injury that we need to worry about.
Historically, we have started our draft after the 2nd or 3rd week of preseason games. Since the season starts with a Thursday game, I think we should start after the 2nd preseason games. That makes the start date Aug 21st and give us over two weeks to complete the draft. Is there any reason to start earlier?

Glanced through it and think it is up to date:
The league rules had an overriding motto to keep it simple. We draft only 10 roster spots - which is still decent depth considering there are 18 teams - and from the 10 you will start 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR/TE, 1 K and 3 flex-RB/WR/TE each week.
Basically we look at your team after the week is over and see what would have been your best lineup and that's the points you get. So if your team is deep and all 10 players are playing then you have a better chance to post a good score. If you have 7 guys who start for their NFL team and 3 who are backups the you need your stars to play better every week to hang around. If you can draft 10 solid consistent players then you should go far. If you draft guys like the Corey Dillon of old who would get 35 points 1 week then 3 points, then 29, then 4 then you can see that on his bad weeks you could be hurting.
The weekly top scoring owner each week will gain immunity for the next week but it will only last through NFL season 15. Week 16 and 17 their will be no immunity and teams will face off for two weeks with the highest combined score the winner and 2nd highest gets second.
Tie breakers for any given week are TOTAL TD's scored by your team (whole roster), then total TD's scored by your lineup (your actually lineup) then rushing TD's, recieving TDs and finally passing TD's. It will probably never even get to a tiebreaker but you never know.
And no transactions after the draft, you get what you draft to last you all 17 weeks! You can trade during the draft but the max # of players you can have is 10. All trades must be for even number players or picks ie 1 for 1, 2 for 2, 3 for 3 etc.
Scoring Rules for QB Event Range (Low-High) Points Passing Yards 25-999 1 point for every 25 Passing Yards 300-999 3 Rushing Yards 10-999 1 point for every 10 Rushing Yards 100-999 3
Rules for QB, RB, WR, TE, PK Event Range (Low-High) Points Number of Passing TDs 1-99 6 points each Pass Interceptions Thrown 1-99 -2 points each Passing 2 Pointers 1-99 2 points each Number of Rushing TDs 1-99 6 points each Rushing 2 Pointers 1-99 2 points each Number of Receiving TDs 1-99 6 points each Receiving 2 Pointers 1-99 2 points each Number of Field Goals Made 1-99 3 points each Extra Points 1-99 1 point each Fumbles Lost (to Opponent) 1-99 -2 points each
Rules for RB, WR Event Range (Low-High) Points Rushing Yards 10-999 1 point for every 10 Rushing Yards 100-999 3 Receiving Yards 10-999 1 point for every 10 Receiving Yards 100-999 3 Receptions 1-99 0.5 points each
Rules for TE Event Range (Low-High) Points Rushing Yards 10-999 1 point for every 10 Rushing Yards 100-999 3 Receiving Yards 10-999 1 point for every 10 Receiving Yards 75-999 3 Receptions 1-99 1.0 point each
TE's are treated as Wr's in this league just so you know.
Draft The draft is serpentine with a twist in 2005. As usual we will roll them bones. All 18 owners will roll and I will verify all rolls, my roll will be verified by Shak/Clyde. This season we will actually run two leagues simultaneously which also means two drafts simultaneously. This is the idea, we sort out from the bone rolls who picks 1st through 18 (100 is the best, 1 is the lowest) and more bone rolling instructions will come. Owner #1 will pick what draft position he wants in draft #1. Owner #2 will pick his slot and so forth and down to owner #18. In mirror league the owner with #18 will select what draft pick he wants first in draft #2, owner #17 will pick next and so forth down to owner #1. Does that make sense? I'll clarify in another post if it appears to be too complicated, which it is not.
2006 payouts are as follows ($50 entry fee) Survivor in each league gets $210 Runner up in each league gets $75 Highest total score for all 17 weeks gets $50 in each league. Owner who survives the most weeks combined between two leagues gets $180. Score Keepers get a $25 discount
That adds up to $900 which is the entry fee in full, no site to payout, you get IT ALL BACK!

I really don't have the energy to kick around the dead horse ST TD argument again this year, so I will try to summarize the arguments here. If you want to relive the blow-by-blow discussions from last year, you can check out this link: Dead Horse -- Kick Here
The argument is whether or not a player should get credit for a special teams TD (punt or kick return). It was ultimately decided that since the argument was brought up just two days before the draft (thanks, Steve), that we would shelve it until this year. I think most were hoping that it would be forgotten, but no (thanks, Joe).
Here are the arguments for and against:
For ST TDs: - It adds excitement and allows Bush/S Smith owners a chance to cheer for their player during ST plays - Since there are so few ST TDs a year, relatively easy for statboy to track
Against ST TDs: - This is an offensive plays only league (except for FGs) - ST TDs will lead to ST Yards and we don't want to go there
I beleive that sums up the arguments.
Let's vote and bury this beast once and for all!

The plan is to start the draft after the 2nd week of preseason games. I believe the date is 21 August. TB, send me your password for Fleaflicker, so I can set it up and see how difficult it would be for us to add defenses. If it turns out to be pretty easy to set up, we can have another yet vote (whooppee).

I vote for ST TD's.
As for Defense's... does anyone want the 18th ranked D? I'm just not sure there are enough good D's for this format. Depends on what the point values would be. If we keep them low, then it might work. But if one D can score 30-40 and another could get zero, then the lack of depth would be to dratic.
The other factor would be bye weeks for D's... might hurt more than other positions... unless, once again, we keep the pt values low.

I don't think anyone would want the 18th ranked Defense, but then again, no one wants the 18th ranked QB or RB or WR or even K, but someone has to. That's just the nature of the beast. I think if we keep the DT scoring similar to the K scoring, it would work.
Using the scoring system below, defenses will score slightly more than kickers. The average kicker last year scored about 105 points and the average defense would have been about 120.
The scoring system is 2 points for each turnover, 1 point for each sack, 2 points for safeties, and 6 points for each TD.
I think it's easily do-able. If we decide to do it, the question becomes whether we increase the rosters by one or two. I think increasing it by two gives owners more options for backups.
What say you?

On second thought lets just keep it like it is, but Yeah there is no difference in having the 18th ranked QB/RB over the 18th ranked defense in principal it should work out similar.
Buddy doesn't really believe what he said, that's just his "Never agree with an Edneck clause" it can't be done, rules of engagement or something..:-)
Plus some people never paid me for the playoffs thingy I won..I guess that domination was a freebee for some! You know who you are.

In post #117 I asked for better participation and BSB asked "participate for what". I think it's pretty obvious that all it takes is one player/team to slow and drag down the league for days...that's what I mean by being a active participate in this Survivor league, If your going to be away state so and make arrangements. Check in once a day if possible. I mean last year I was in the middle of the remote Highlands of Scotland on vacation and I found a internet Cafe once a day there, so I think we can all check in at least once a day.

Back from the weekend...caught a nice Silver Salmon Saturday and took 12 pinks today in less than 60 minutes with 3 kids today. I caught three fish on my first three casts and untangled lines, tied tackle and pretty much tried not to be snagged by a kid the rest of the way. Good times.

Midget Mauler, I guess the problem is if all 18 owners took 48 hours, it would take us over a month to establish the draft positions. Several people have had the courtesy to post or email that they will not be around for a day or so and have predrafted a position, so to speak. Now if your internet outage was unforeseen, I can understand that, but for you to keep everyone waiting for 2 days and then think there is nothing wrong with that is inconsiderate in my book. Take it for what it's worth.

I was thinking about taking the #18 slot because the Rb's from 12-18 are about the same calibur and I do like the back-to-back action. The reason I didn't was having to sit around for 36 picks would drive me insane watching all that talent leave the board.
Addai in most of the early drafts I've seen is going pretty early, even before Alexander, Gore and Westbrook....interesting!! I'm thnking he might not be a bad pick over SA...Hey i'm all about getting players off great Offense's.

Steve shared this article with me about how the top end of the draft has the advantage because it gets the best value for it's picks in a serpentine draft format. By the way everyone selects draft positions in this league, I think everyone would agree. The article advocates using a 3rd round reversal (3RR) format. This format is the same as a serpentine, except the 3rd round is reversed, so the 18th spot would pick first in rounds 2, 3, and 4. The 1 spot would pick first in the 1st and then 1st again in the 5th.
In this league, it's pretty obvious that everyone wants to draft near the top -- no one that has selected early has selected below the middle. It's almost like the selecting for draft positions is too simple -- many owners say just give me the earliest position.
I wouldn't mind next year considering a different draft format. To me, the 3RR seems pretty extreme. How does everyone feel about a variation where the 18th spot picks first in rounds 2 and 3, then back to the serpentine. It would look like this: 1-18 18-1 18-1 1-18 18-1 and serpentine the rest of the way. I think this brings more strategy into selecting draft position. Do you really want #1 if you are now picking at the end of rounds 2 and 3. According to the article, this format still gives the top part of the draft the advantage, but it closes the advantage some.
I know this league is resistant to change, but I think this is the wave of the future and more and more league websites are beginning to realize the advantage the early draft positions have.
What do you think?

This is something I read on Footballguys.com. There are other articles about other ways to draft. If this is something you want more info about I can email the articles to you. With this many teams a straight serpentine draft is really difficult.

I think one way to test these draft schemes is that we try the one format Shak mentioned in one of our leagues next year (Iron Mike) and use a regular serpentine draft in the other (Bill Walsh) and see how that pans out and see if it actually evens out the playing field against the early round picks...I don't think we really can tell if it will make a difference until we try it once at least...sounds like it should even things out, but every year we have people drafting late in the hunt or winnning, so is that just being a better drafter or are the guys drafting early just bad...for ex: is a healthy Portis and Travis Henry draft @18,19 a better situation then say LT and Boldin..probably not, but a lot closer then you think IMO

I agree with your example that the two players you get at 18 and 19 are not too far off from the 1 and 36. I guess I'm basing my argument on the fact that picking drafting positions is now almost a no-brainer. No one wants to go out on a limb and pick from the back end of the draft if they can pick in the top 12 spots. Adding this dimension to the draft will make it a tougher decision on where to draft.
I'd certainly vote to make one of the divisions next year this version if we can modify the draft site to do it. I don't think it currently can, but maybe they will fix it for next year.

I'll take the corner. It is a long wait between picks but I like having the back-to-back picks...eliminates the guess work on who will be left.

Thanks Ed and Shak for picking my two spots for me.
As for the discussion on draft spots, I usually prefer being near the bottom so I can go RB-RB and get value. Normally you have the top tier, then very solid starters, and then a large drop-off. Last year the top tier was LJ, SA, and LT, and then it seemed like there were another 14-16 solid choices as RB starters. This year I'm thinking LT is the only for sure top tier guy. Then you have Jackson and LJ. Then who? Broken hand Gore, never carried the team Addai, always injured Westbrook, I can fumble when I want to Henry? FWP, SA, RJ, Portis? I guess I do have Addai and FWP up there and would roll the dice on SA coming back, but for the most part have the "next group" lumped in with quite a few guys. I picked high so I could get a better return in the third round. If we flip-flopped the 3rd round, who wouldn't want to pick at 18th? 18-19-37 would be sweet. I guess I would rather have LT with the first pick and take my chances from there, but I think we'd see the bottom filled up quicker than the top.

While we wait for the draft order to get done, I thought I would share this moving tribute about Bill Walsh.
SAN FRANCISCO—Funeral services for legendary football coach Bill Walsh began Wednesday as friends and family of the offensive innovator bore his coffin down the aisle of the San Francisco Unitarian church in a series of short but precise passes, finally placing Walsh's earthly remains on the bier with a moving display of West Coast-style pallbearing that took a respectful nine minutes to cover over 85 steps. "This was exactly the way Coach would have wanted it," said Joe Montana, who overcame his evident grief to lead multiple platoons of well-coordinated mourners including Mike Holmgren, George Seifert, Tony Dungy, Jerry Rice, and Walsh's wife and children in a series of scripted passes that took advantage of the timing and teamwork Walsh drilled into his loved ones during his life. "Bill Walsh believed that good football should be elegant, almost beautiful, and involve everyone's strengths, and though it might sound corny, we wanted his memorial service to be the same way." Several prominent football figures in attendance said it was the most impressive memorial display since the 1970 funeral of Vince Lombardi, who was finally laid to rest in a grinding series of brutal pulling-guard sweeps that utterly overpowered the opposing Chicago Bears.
