Posted by: Trip
- Leader [13961611] Sun, Aug 26, 2007, 12:37

Tonight I will move the time limit to 4 hours per pick. We need a couple of strong days from everyone to pick the pace up here. Currently we're on pace to finish the day the season starts.

I have placed all players selected through round 10 on their teams for those managers who have not been doing so themselves. Please pick up your players in AOL after you have made your selection in the future. This will also allow you to search available players at the AOL site.

We have been doing a good job with the rationales. Please keep up the good work. If there are no objections, I am proposing we stop rationales after round 18. Any notes you would like to pass on about the final rounds can be done in your draft summary.

That all sounds great. I do wish we could have sped the draft time up during the weekend versus during the work week when access sometimes an issue for me, but I can work some queues.

Thanks Trip, I went to do pick them up early this AM and they were all there. I later went to check my Yahoo acct. & I'd turned on the option in AOL to notify me of adds/drops and I had like 200 messages. I first thought I had a spam bomb or something. Yikes! lol

The round 1-6 rationales won't be able to be moved until probably tomorrow. Something is screwy with the html in that thread and it's getting fixed.

Calling it a night early tonight. My queue has been disabled, I want to sleep on my options tonight and see what has happened in between picks.

I'll change the draft clock first thing in the AM.

I noticed Da Bomb hasn't posted a single Rationale. I don't mean to call him out, but I don't want to have to post 15 rationales between now and Friday for 1 team. I've got better things to do and so does TB (work). There's no reason not to put something down on each player as you draft them. Most web browsers have tabs - open one to Kaffinated & one to Rotoguru!

The delays just add extra work on the Mods moving the rationales over. If we weren't in the draft, you wouldn't be able to do the "placeholder", you'd have to post each time you drafted a player. Care to guess what round of rationales you'd be in?

I've already fat-fingered HTML text in the first rationale thread and needed TB & Dave fix it yesterday, I don't want to make another error trying to get them all done by Friday because as of Friday, I'm done, other than drafting & doing my own rationales. I'm on the road to my parents 57th Anniv. & it's Labor day weekend too.

Sorry for the rant, but rationales are part of the RIFC format and have been all 4 years we've played. It's understood going in they're required and no-one's exempt. Other than Doug, we're all a little guilty of being a little lazy in our player analysis, but it's AAA and not the big leagues so that kind of stuff happens at times. (Props Doug).

That's no excuse for not doing them or keeping fairly current. It's safe to say we're all in multiple drafts and other than a couple of us old guys, everyone has to make a living or go to school or both.

Again sorry for the long post, I should be happier, Fredo resigned this AM! ;)

Deepsnapper, I'm the mystery mod who has been moving the rationales over as well.

Taxman and Da Bomb have been the laggards on the draft and in the rationales. FYI guys, as the league commissioner guru will consider my recommendations when putting together the RIFC next year.

Da Bomb, if you time out again you will be moved to a 3 hour clock.

DS,

It is frustrating when a person or two don't pull their own weight in which they've agreed to do. IMM there needs to be a happy medium and it starts with the clock. We don't want to penalize otherwise attentive managers who have a pick or two they jsut cna't get to or their Q gets picked clean. Yet when the same manager(s) consistently use up time it slows us all down.

Since we can't use a cumulative clock here and we are slipping farther behind schedule, I propose we look to adjust the clock downward again to 3 Hrs in a day or two if we can't make progress. Then we cut it again to two hours. I'd really hate to see it ever go less than that unless we're at Tues or so of next week.

There is no way we can possibly get done if we are using up our clock the way we are. Since we are asked to have a Q when possible, this seems like it would help. Bottom line, when most players are faced with the possibility of timing out, it's amazing how easy it is to get a Q. And when Qs are made and people are selecting in timely manners it assists managers to be able to leave shorter Qs as well.

DS has really slaved over these threads and this draft as well as a few others and a BIG THANK YOU goes out. There is so much work that goes on that the average manager has no clue about.

Trip - I suspected you had mod powers, and you can understand what I'm talking about.

Ref - thanks, but I just appreciate the draft and try not to hold things up. Heck, if we didn't want to be here, we wouldn't do this. I remember drafting with strangers. ugh.

I would prefer to keep the clock at 4 hours. If most managers keep up with the draft, this allows for the unforeseen holdup that can happen to any of us.

I'm heading out now and will be on the road for much of the next couple weeks. I expect to have my laptop with me, so should be able to track things that way. I should also be able to check in online once or twice a day to set up queues.

However, it will be really helpful if I can have one or two people who will be my phone contacts for the remainder of the draft. I may be unable to get online for hours at a time, etc. so if I have a queue expire, I'll need someone to give me a ring and make my pick for me.

Please drop me an email if you think you're available for phone contact. Thanks!

Guys, I'm not sure everyone here realizes how behind we are.

RIFC started 3 days before us and are 9 rounds ahead of us.

AA is 1 round from being completed.

We are keeping pace with AAA#2 but they aren't projecting to finish in time either.

If you are going to compete in this league, you need to be prepared, especially in the later rounds. If you are prepared, making your queues is a lot easier. It can also help you a ton by projecting players and knowing which players might disappear when.

In other words, by making queues, not only are you doing the rest of the league a favor, you are doing yourself a huge favor as well.
[/rant]

Hubble, why not make it easier for yourself and store your queues in Kafenatid?

RE:30

loki, while four hours seems like the logical number, we have collected a lot of data about time since we started a cumulative clock a few years ago in G20 Baseball, G20 Basketball and G24 Football. Even though there is an occassional manager or two who fall behind or don't do what is expected of them, we have amzing progress for having so many managers and so many trades to try and track.

What we've found is that is extremely rare for someone who eclipses the three hour mark to not also time out. In fact, it is so rare that we've taken all of our per pick times down to three hours from the get-go. There are a handfull of times where a manager will go over two hours though. But normally picks are made less than two hours. In our current draft, we've had only one manager take over two hours and not time out. Only 4 managers have taken three hours.

It is similar in our other leagues. This allows us to start very late and have the most current information on starters, etc. for our drafts.

In conclusion, if 24 different managers with picks and trades all over the place can do it, most any league who cares should be able to do it. Cutting the clock may indeed cause an extra time out or two, but w/o a running or cumulative clock to make a manager more responsible for the time elapsing overall, it's the only way to help speed up the laggers.

The four hours haven't put a dent in things the first day--and in fact we may have lost more time. I am not upset yet, but I will be if we don't get the draft done in time for us to be able to hit the WW/FA wire before the season starts to fix a broken pick. As long as we get back on schedule, I don't think most care where that clock sits.

OK...working on my Q now...;)

Ditto sending Doug my cell. I didn't get a response yesterday though.

My only problem is losing Internet service sometime last night. I found out at 5:00am CT. I got up at little early to check out the lunar eclipse and when I came in about 5:05 - no service.

Not the best help from Verizon @ 5am. reboot, unplug, etc, etc. after an hour of that they called back after 7am with a real tech. and mysteriously after a couple hours more - green lights!

Actually I did leave a Q but Delhomme was taken right before me and apparently in my hurried effort to get out and turn off the computer I didn't click on the button properly to enter Schaub (was still sitting waiting to be added to Q). I had told Peter that I had a meeting and didn't know when I'd be able to get in so just wish you could have skipped me earlier. Don't like people waiting that long on me. That's what Qs are for.

I'm a little furstrated for again spending so much time on my q and it's picked clean yet again.

Some of the guys who might have been:

Freddy Keiaho
Charles Tillman
Troy Williamson
Matt Jones
Brian Dawkins
E.J. Henderson

Was prepared to take Keilaho last time but the picks before me too so long that it game me time to switch him and buckhalter around. I seriously doubt Buckhalter would have made it back to me either.

I do not know what's going on with the draft, but 36 minutes ago, I received this message:

letter_j,
You are receiving this e-mail because you are a Designated Picker for Taxman and it is their turn to pick in the RIFC AAA #1 League Draft!

To make the pick for Taxman, go to http://www.kafenatid.net/on_the_clock/index.php

I started the draft back up using Trip's login however I am in a hurry now and can't figure out how to delete the last couple picks. Taxman should pick JUST his 16.15 then I will pick two, then Taxman's 17.02. I will be back in an hour.

Re post 106,

The draft pauses nightly from 11:00 pm - 7:00 am ET. jtserb drafted 16.11 Robert Meachem WR NOR at 11:01 pm ET (during the draft pause). I drafted 16.12 D.J. Williams LB DEN at 07:52 am ET.

I am unaware of how I could have timed out if the clock did pause as I spent only 52 minutes on the clock. Yet, when I arrived this morning, I had timed out.

It's all good...I selected before the draft was stopped. I just do not understand how I could have timed out if the clock did indeed stop from 11 to 7.

Just so you are aware, the clock is now running at 17 (of 24) 2 226 Taxman with 3:36 remaining, as per Da Bomb's post of 108.

letter j, you didn't time out. You were showing as up and the draft was paused when I left. Your post indicates your clock didn't even start until 7am. All I was saying is that the draft did pause (as oppose to the theory that teh clock never stopped) and you were up. I didn't look to see how much time you had remaining as it just showed paused.

Re post 114,

The clock should not have started until 7 am...yet, when I arrived this morning, Kafenatid indicated that I had timed out, as I had been skipped (and so had Taxman) and Da Bomb was on the clock.

How is that possible, if the clock stopped properly?

I see what you are saying letter j. I thought the confusion was in post 97 in that the thought was the draft did not pause and kept going. Then when you said you had timed out, I didn't know how much time had elapsed before it started up at 7 am. Obviously, there was a hiccup and it skipped you when it restarted at 7 am. Then the other guy after you didn't pick by 10 am I'm guessing so it skipped again? I don't know.

OK DS was skipped and should'nt have been. He is out mowing his lawn and should be back at any time. So Trip, don't select until ds is able to. Looks like it skipped an extra spot. I hit skip 4 times so am wondering if da bomb's two picks are both skipped with one skip and it was my fault afterall. Anyhow, we're moving again at least.

He's been near the top of my short list for a while, but there is always another position I wanted to get. The Woodson pick, on the other hand, was an out of nowhere pick. Never had him in my queue. I just noticed that he scored 154.20 points in this format last year, liked his bye week to round out my IDP, and decided why not? Heck of a rationale there, eh?

I don't have a list--just a general idea of what I'm trying to do and I consult some cheet sheets to help me rememebr players, etc. It's amazing how many times players were picked and I get mad at myself because I forgot about them! But on the other hand, my Q had been getting picked pretty clean until this time when NO ONE on my Q was taken. Starting to think I might be reaching! ;)

We'd be done already if it weren't for the top part of the draft. I propose a 2 hour clock for Da Bomb moving forward. In fact, with Labor Day Weekend fast approaching, the last thing we need to do is hang out by the computer the whole time. If we can set Qs--even if you're here and know who you want, that would help. With the Qs and DPs, things should be moving a lot faster.

19.03 Oakland Raiders, DEF, OAK

A second defense, ugh!...But necessary.

Last year, Oakland finished the season as the 21st ranked defense, allowing 134 rush yds/g (25th), 150.8 pass yds/g (1st) and 20.8 PPG (18th). They also finished top 10 in INTs. This was despite a very tough schedule.

This year, their schedule is soft, loaded with games against numerous teams that finished in the bottom half of the NFL offensively last year. I'm crossing my fingers that Lane Kiffin gets the Raiders moving in the right direction offensively, thereby keeping the Raiders defense fresh. If that happens, this defense could surprise.

You made your last pick like 5 hours and 10 picks ago. We made a quick turn on the corner. I'm betting a much faster turn than we'll see at the top of the board. 17 picks in the last 6-7 hours. Not a shabby run, but we've yet to hit a real rhythm in this draft. I'm guessing A's guy never expected the draft to get back to him before 8PM. I'm just hoping it doesn't spend 13 hours at the top of the order again.

Sorry about that. I just happened to come upstairs to see if Sludge had picked in another draft. He did, so I made my pick. I saw you were up in the other draft and left me as a DP, so made the pick and went back to finish watching my movie. I should have checked the board first, especially knowing there is no rush with the draft more than likely stopped at letter j for the evening.

Just a heads up to anyone that has me as a DP during the day. I do not normally have access to the forum from work so it's probably better off to not have me as a DP if you don't want me to pick the name showing in the box.

That wasn't the case with your pick DS and I'm sorry about that. If you want to work a trade for Morgan I'd be willing to take him off your hands. I'll give you my next two picks (21 and 22) for him and your 23rd rounder.

First his Q is unavailable and it hasn't been filled either.

That is contrary to his post in 186 where he said just give him an hour as his Q would be filled from here on out.

20.12 Dallas Clark, TE, IND

This former Colts first rounder has produced consistent numbers (borderline TE1) for a TE when healthy. He is a very good pass catching TE, is not afraid to go across the middle and Manning seems to target him in the red zone. Although I have some reservations that rookie WR Anthony Gonzalez will cut into some of Clark's numbers in the slot, in the 20th round, Clark seemed like a good throw at the dartboard.

21.03 Bobby Wade, WR, MIN

My fifth WR drafted and he so happens to be the #1 WR for the Vikings...ho hum. Unbelievably, the Vikes signed Wade as a free agent this offseason at a 5-year $15 million contract. I'm hoping to use Wade as a spot starter. Hopefully, Wade earns some of that money on the weeks that I start him.

Assuming that Rackers can adjust to his new holder, he should once again be one of the top PKs. I am also hopeful that his off season training will enable him to regain leg strength for a better >50 yard percentage this season.

Depending on when we finish this thing, I will add remaining players and lock out teams from being able to pick up free agents. We will then be in the post-draft claiming period. At noon (ET) on Tuesday, all submitted claims for undrafted players will be processed, using even numbered draft round priorities. If you wish to claim an undrafted player (along with dropping one of your drafted players, of course), you must submit your claim at the AOL site. You may submit as many claims as you wish. If you do, prioritize them appropriately.

After the claims have been awarded and I have confirmed that everything seems to have run properly, I will enable free agent pickups.

I am trying to pick a player whose name is in neither kafenatid or AOL

Kenton Keith, RB, IND

Untill Keith is added to AOL, I am going to use a place holder...Michael Vick. I understand that if I drop Vick before Keith is added, I will lose my claim on Keith.

I will wait 30 minutews before I pick Kieth in case someone has a problem with my plan.

I requested Kenton Keith through kafenatid. Yesterday, Fred processed Selvin Young in a matter of a couple of hours of the request to add the player...I would assume he does the same with Keith.

I'm in the same boat as you concerning AOL...we'll have to let Trip take care of that.

Taxman,

Da Bomb has a queue and its filled...so maybe you want to wait a while to see if Keith gets added to kafenatid? Just a suggestion, it's only the two of you left (and jtserb, who has timed out) who are left to complete the draft.

Taxman,

No...I had Selvin Young on my radar, made the request yesterday to Fred and within a couple of hours, he had added Young.

Keith's all yours...I think that you have indicated that he is who you want to select so I believe that you're covered...it's just a matter of doing so on kafenatid.

for jtserb's last pick, he gets a randomly selected player from me so that he can't select a player who was recently named to a starting job or who was upgraded due to another player's injury. Please add your players in AOL ASAP. I will review rosters late tonight and lock things down shortly thereafter.

TB...I've sent him help via e-mail before. I have sent e-mails trying to help him out within the past 2 hours.

I haven't had any requests for help before this thread started.

I am not his excuse for not being able to set a lineup and I want to make that very clear.

My main point is that he's had more than two weeks to sort out any accessibility issues and he would have plenty of support during that time.

I have offered support, and have offered support recently.

This is not a problem of commissioner support, the issue is him not asking for help earlier.

I was able to select Selvin Young at kafenatid during the draft, but he is not yet available at AOL. I do not have a full roster at AOL. Not that it's a problem, I am able to have a team rostered without Young; in any event, he was not selected with week one in mind.

Re: 237... I did first mention the login issue back on August 20th in our first draft thread. I tried periodically to log on and later received an email saying it was some ongoing problem and to try in a few days, but it never cleared up. Honestly, with 3 slow drafts going on simultaneously, I felt keeping up-to-date on Kafenatid was much more important than logging on to the website... that could be done the week after the draft (i.e., now).

So when it still hadn't resolved a couple days ago I did follow up AGAIN with AOL and finally got another reply from AOL at 12:30 EST today saying "we don't know when it will be fixed, don't email us again" (nice customer service). In the meantime I had simply come her to ask whether my team was already registered in the league because I assumed if so, I wouldn't be able to re-register with a different ID. Basically I was just trying to think of a creative possible solution since AOL was struggling to get their act together and the clock was starting to tick a little louder.

As it turns out, AOL must have finally fixed whatever the issue was about the same time they sent me that email, because when I got into the office around 3:00 EST today, it was finally working.

Re: 241... this had nothing to do with commissioner support, and I don't believe I ever said or implied that it di. It was an AOL support issue. And when yesterday it still wasn't resolved by them I decided to try a creative solution (creating a new ID, in case the problem was somehow specfic to my login ID)... and so I simply asked a question of whether my team was registered already to make sure I wouldn't be wasting my time by doing that. I don't see how/why asking if I was already registered was such a big deal. I wasn't accusing anyone of anything... just... asking a simple question.

Re: 239... thanks for the info. FWIW, AOL's "forgot password" system wasn't working either, I had tried playing with that the previous week. But the point is, I hadn't forgotten my password... I just couldn't log in. I checked the password several times logging off/on AIM so I knew it was correct. In the end it appears it was just some weird AOL website login glitch that took them two weeks to fix. *sigh* Three cheers for AOL... that stands for "America Offline", right? :p

edited to remove picks prior to rounds 19

19.11 Rodney Harrison DB NWE - Seems really good value here, although now he's going to miss the first 4 games. He should come back strong though, since it's not an injury-induced absence.

20.04 Tony Hunt RB PHI - Goal line back could provide occasional value even as the #3 RB... and the two backs ahead of him both have injury histories. I don't think he'll be much value unless one of those injuries strike again (which I don't wish on anyone... except maybe Mike Vick)... but the upside seemed worth a pick here.

21.11 Atlanta Falcons DEF ATL - D seems to vary a lot from one year to next and I just have the feeling they have an outside shot of surprising this year. Denver faces Indy in week 4, whereas Atlanta faces Houston, so they might be a good matchup play that week.

22.04 Nate Burleson WR SEA - The WR situation in SEA is cloudy, but I think at some point this season he could provide value, not to mention the return yardage. Likely to ride the pine unless one of my top 3 gets injured, but I like the potential depth he provides along with Northcutt. One or the other should be good enough to start most weeks.

23.11 Demorrio Williams LB ATL - I like my flex IDPs, but figured it was worth taking one more guy with upside... I'd need a spare IDP for bye weeks anyway, but wanted to put "dibs" on this guy. Didn't feel I had any other lineup holes that needed filling.

24.04 Josh Scobee K JAX - Figured I oughtta draft a kicker. *shrug*

19.13 New York Jets DEF

Mangini is a defensive-minded coach. I have the NYJs D ranked in top 15. Not bad for a backup D.

20.02 Patrick Clayton, WR, DAL

Slight homer pick, but also insurance on Glenn who is still not 100%. Clayton was a sleeper for me anyway going into this year. If he starts, he could be huge. Glenn better get healthy quick.

21.13 Tampa Bay DEF

Not an intended pick here. I forgot to clear my queue. Moving along.

22.02 Josh Brown, K, SEA

I still needed a kicker and Brown is a top 10 kicker. Seattle's offense is still solid as well. Should be plenty of opps.

23.12 Dunta Robinson, CB, HOU

At this point, I only have Roy Williams at DB. Figured I'd go there with my last two picks. Robinson is a play-maker in a defense that should be improved for next year.

24.02 Deangelo Hall, CB, ATL

Another playmaker added to my secondary. Hall was a stud at Va Tech and I think his reputation of being a shutdown corner hurts him some fantasy wise. However, I didn't like anything else out there and wanted to go with another guy that can make plays when given the opp. I expect his INT numbers to increase.

I contacted AOL last Monday about setting this up. I haven't heard back, despite a follow-up. I was hoping that things might straighten out once the first week's games were final. That doesn't appear to be the case.

I am going to lock managers from making claims and ask that they be submitted by me via e-mail.

I am considering making the switch back to fanball commissioner as I haven't had a response to 3 tickets so far this year.
