G24 Managers - You are each invited (although not required) to post your general reflections on the completed draft. Comments may be as detailed or as general as you wish. As a catalyst, free free to comment on any of the following:

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Non-managers are also welcome to post general comments on the draft, and to raise questions.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I was drafting from the 21st spot, so I had my fingers crossed that Kirk Morrison would make it to me, but didn't expect it. He's one of my favorite young players on my favorite team and was rated as a top 15 LB. With my second pick I was either going to grab a top DB or a second LB. Not a lot of strategy involved with only 4 starters. Unless a great DL dropped to me with my 3rd pick, I would forego the position until late in the supplemental draft.

I didn't attempt to factor in return yards and it should only affect a couple DB, but overall I think I got two top 15 DB and two top 15 LB. On paper, anyway, they still have to perform.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

My first pick, Morrison, is my favorite but I like them all. There are still IDP available that I would rather have than half the people drafted so I do think we need to add more starting positions. I wish keepers played more of a factor, but they didn't

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I like what a couple teams did, but the only one that grabbed multiple players that I had on my radar (comparitive to my draft position) was THK. I'm looking forward to seeing what Greenway and Pos do this season and I know Rhodes is a solid DB.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

I would have to go back and look, but I'm guessing it's the number of reaches in early rounds, especially at DL. Some people did their homework while others did not. There will be a big difference in game outcomes this season due to the imbalance of IDP scores. Some weeks it won't matter but other weeks when one team puts up a great offensive score only to lose to a team whose LB and DB had a monster week they will bang their head against a wall.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Too short of a draft to do much differently. Hopefully we make some changes in the future and add more starting positions/keepers.

My strategy going into the IDP draft was to stockpile young, proven talent combined with tremendous upside. Since I picked in the top 3, I was guaranteed a stud player regardless of who was out there with my first pick. The first person that came to mind was Shawne “Lights Out” Merriman. Before I even knew I was up, I already had an email in my inbox from GO with a trade offer for Merriman knowing that I was going to take him. As a result, he sent me A.J. Hawk + his 3rd round supplemental draft pick, which I gladly accepted.

In rounds two & three I wanted to draft an additional linebacker and defensive end. One of the guys that I had on my radar that I was 100% sure would fall to me was Freddie Keihao of the Indianapolis Colts. Keihao, as any Colts fan knows, is a far superior tackler to Cato June. Additionally, Keihao plays the “Will” position in Tampa 2 which is typically tackle-friendly. Therefore, that will equate to a lot of tackles over the course of the season and at a significant value (round 2). Unfortunately for me, Cards was up on his game and swooped in and got what could be an absolute steal in the IDP.

When my pick came up, I had two options: A) go with Kamerion Wimbley, my next highest rated LB after Keihao or B) go with Mario Williams, a DE with tremendous upside. Since both players fit into my draft strategy, I figured let me get a start on the DL position. Needless to say, I chose Mario Williams due to the fact he was picked 1.01 in the 2006 draft over Reggie Bush. In round three, I could only hope that Wimbley or LB of his caliber would fall to me, and sure enough Wimbley did. So now I have 3 picks from the 2006 draft lottery (picks 1-16) that all have stood out in excellence for their respective clubs as rookies. Typically, there is a big boost in performance from the rookie seasons to the second years, so hopefully that is the case for my first three picks

As the 4th round was approaching, I had already circled a player who I expected to take (he is still a FA now) fully expecting Michael Huff to get selected. When Michael Huff fell to me, I could not have been happier because this allowed me to follow my IDP Draft Objective to a T.

After over viewing everybody’s IDP picks, three teams, to me, really stood out (besides mine of course :P) They are THK’s, SW’s, and MJD’s.

For THK – I assume he likes the Big Ten Conference due to three out of four of his players were Big Ten standouts. I love Paul Posluszny and in a season or two, fans in Buffalo will easily forget about London Fletcher-Baker and co. Do you realize that the Bills were really flirting with taking him at #12 if Marshawn Lynch was not there??? The guy can just flat out play, and that’s a tremendous show of respect from me considering that I really don’t care for Penn State. Kerry Rhodes is always a solid pick and one of the emerging stars in the NFL. Tamba Hali really showcased his skills as a rookie and Chad Greenway, according to Peter King of SI.com, “is one of the fastest linebackers I've seen this summer.”

For SW – Brian Urlacher is always a safe bet and potential candidate for defensive player of the year…there isn’t much I can say that hasn’t already been said. Patrick Willis will be a beast in the NFL. The man ran a 4.38 40 on his pro day, combine that with his pedigree (SEC Football!) and there is no reason why he wont put up DeMeco Ryans type numbers. Will Smith was solid last year and there is no reason to expect him to slow down…especially in light of the contracts given to sub-par players, imagine what he will garner on the open market once he becomes a FA. Rashean Mathis is totally underrated as a CB, partly b/c he plays in Jacksonville. I think he rounds out what looks to be a really nasty set of IDP players.

For MJD – Lofa Tatupu was great as a rookie, solid as a 2nd year player and is what he is, an upper echelon LB who will give you consistency year in and year out. DJ Williams is finally moving back into his “natural” spot at MLB to replace the departed Al Wilson. This should mean a significant boost in his stats and I expect him to be a top 10 defensive player by year end. B.Dawk is arguably one of the best, if not the best Safety in the NFL. I think, collectively as a league, we each know this is just a 1 year rental, but boy will he perform. Charles Grant, like Will Smith is solid and will be playing for that Dwight Freeney money.

In conclusion, I am thoroughly satisfied with the way the first leg of the G24 draft turned out for this Gurupie rookie. I was able to land four players who can powerfully contribute to the Buffalo Bills defense and also fit the criteria of what I was looking to add to my roster.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I feel like my plan changed on the fly a few times. One of the things I was struggling with was the effects of the new 9 keeper rule, while adding 4 positions at the same time. I tossed some rookies and youngsters immediately off my board who weren't going to immediately be good this year. My eyes were dilated like MLB in a frenzy when Willis kept falling. I think I struck gold with that one, we'll see though. I had Will Smith quite high on my list, some may think it was shaky, but I have a good feeling about him too. It seemed like there was better DB depth compared to the DL so I thought I could get a decent DB late.

Again, with the 9 or maybe even the thrown around idea of 10...who really knows how many keepers everyone is going to take??

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

Willis. I saw a beast at Ole Miss. I don't think I'd redo anything at the moment.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

One of my favorite quartets came from blackjackis21. Although, I'm certainly a biased Ernie Sims/FSU fan. His strategy was similar to mine. The other one that I liked was mjd.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

Actually not a whole lot. It seemed to go pretty smooth and how I thought it would. Of course, that's so much different than the S-draft which is impossible to predict.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Not much. I'm pretty sure it's all going to be smashed together in the future, so this was a one-time thing. There are certainly PLENTY of decent guys still available for a 24 team league, which never happens with any other position. I like the new additions of the IDPs just due to the fact that I have more studs on my team, and I can't quit whining about starting backups in offensive positions.

1.14 Mike Peterson, LB, Jax
2.11 Nick Barnett, LB, GB
3.14 Nate Clements, DB, SF
4.11 Mark Anderson, DL, CHI

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned? and 2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

I am kind of new to IDP research for fantasy purposes. I played Sandbox a long time ago and that was my first foray but really didn't research until lat year's RIFC series. It opened up such a new stream of strategy that it interests me. But still don't know a lot. My goal was to get a LB with my first pick who would score points and could be kept. When my pick came up, I had it narrowed down to Mike Peterson and Kirk Morrison. Peterson is 31 and Morrison is 25 o 26 and coming into his own. Peterson missed all last year but is supposedly healthy now. Jax is a very good D and Oakland isn't. But how does that play into a MLB? Will a bad D allow more tackles? Will a good D's rush cause more mistakes by the QB leading to INTs/PDs/not looking off a receiver for dump offs and more tackles?

All those things went through my mind. I looked at several sources for cheat sheets and as predicted, certain players were all over the place. A few had Peterson as high as 4th overall IDP though with upside. With pick 14th up, I felt that was good value and was REALLY hoping the lesser-known Morrison would fall to me at 2.11. Not even close as he went at 1.21 to TB. Figures he wouldn't get by a Raiders fan.

I had Nick Barnett last year in RIFC series and like him. I think with Hawk out there with him it will make them both much better though could split tackles. I just felt he was the best player on the board at my pick. I had hoped to grab two LBs unless one of the top DBs slipped--and they didn't.

Clements seems like SF really likes him and that D is much improved. I just read a lot about him and liked him. I didn't even think about him coming in.

Anderson is a very underated DL. If he wasn't there, I probably would have addressed a DL in the S draft. This guy had a dozen sacks as a part time player. He has now won the starting job and will be rotated out at times to keep fresh. This could be big as far as DLs go.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

I like SW's team a lot. Cards has some nice talent as well. I think several teams really did well though.

4. What surprised you most about the draft? Seemed like whether good or bad there were picks that I thought were huge reaches. Surprised some of the DLs went so high.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

I probably can't asnwer this until the season started, but I'm fine with my picks as of now.

1. What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

I had to go on a last second road trip to Montreal with the girlfriend, so had to think of someone who could draft my team for me, Species was my 13th choice but he was available. If I had to execute a better 'plan' I probably would have broken up with the gf.

2. What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

All of Species picks needed do-overs. Nah he did a great job and its a great surprise to see how well a person who has no prior knowledge of my team or league can do when given the reigns.

3. Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

Only had a chance to glance over a few teams I liked MJD's, as well as PD's.

4. What surprised you most about the draft?

The longshot LB's that were drafted, holy moly I was going through a list to see what defensive players I could draft in the supplemental draft, and I must say the first round did not go as many of the lists I have say it should go, but then again I still firmly believe that there arent as many tiers in IDP as there are in offense.

5. If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

Don't think I would've done a whole lot different, Im glad Species didnt follow the ridiculous LB trend that seemed to develop, and has given me with a solid mix of guys that will get me the points this year as well as 3 different guys that I can see as being my keeper next year.

lol - gee thanks buddy.

FWIW -- I had really targeted Patrick Willis as a monster young LB keeper. I should have snagged him in Round 2 but thought as a 49er he might escape more notice. Because of this strategy, I decided - especially since it wasn't my team and I could hardly give a f**k - that I would go against the grain and get stud DB/DL in rounds 1 and 2, hoping my gamble would pay off. It didn't, but I still picked up 2 young, hungry LB's that I think can surprise. Williams in particular had greater success in 2005 as a weakside LB....his stats suffered as a smaller speed-LB in 2006 when he was a strongside guy. But this year in ATL he's back on the weak side as an aggressive, attacking LB and I think he can match many late 1st/early 2nd round LB's.

Who vouched for him again?

My picks:

1.17 London Fletcher-Baker, LB, Wash
2.08 Keith Brooking, ATL, LB
3.17 Donte Whitner, S, Buf
4.08 Michael Strahan, DL, NYG

What was your plan/strategy entering the draft? Were you able to execute as you had planned?

Because the scoring valued tackles highly, I was going to avoid the low-tackling, high sack/INT guys and concentrate on guys with large tackling numbers. But my draft spot meant I had to pick well--many of the flashy names would be gone by the time I came up, and runs on certain positions would come and go before my pick.

Before the draft I consulted a number of sources, and did a custom projected IDP list on Rotowire (which only had tackles, sacks, and INTs). This limited its overall value to this draft, but it did pop up a few names I might have otherwise discounted.

What were your favorite picks? Which do you wish you could do over?

First pick I knew I had to wait to see how it developed. Truth be told, of my original list of 25 names, half were gone by the time my first pick came, so I felt kind of lucky to have more choices than I otherwise might have. London Fletcher-Baker however, was a top 5 guy on my list, with his monster tackling numbers plus the occassional pick & sack. I knew going in I'd take a linebacker first, as I couldn't pass up the passes defended stats either. As far as I'm concerned, getting London Fletcher-Baker at #17 was a gift.

Along came gift #2, Keith Brooking, available at 2.8. A lot of "name" linebackers went earlier, but Brooking is a guy who can get you 10 points a game by himself. Was looking at DBs (and might have taken Peppers or Taylor if available, but they went 1-2 before my pick), but there didn't seem to be a better safe pick for points at this point in the draft.

At 3.17 many of the top guys were gone. I knew I should go DB at this point (the top DL guys were about gone) and Donte Whitner was the top DB left on my list, and the only one in my top 10 DBs left at all. He doesn't get a lot of INT opportunities in Buffalo because he's been used to support the run, but last year he got 100 tackles and that's not bad at all in this spot.

I took a shot with Michael Strahan in the last spot. If he plays, having Osi Umenyiora on the same line will keep offensive lines honest and open up opportunities for both of them. A healthy Strahan could get 13 sacks and 75 tackles. But he's just as likely to retire. But definetely worth it at this point to throw the dice on him.

Looking over all of the teams, which ones do you like the most (other than your own)?

coldwater coyotes seemed to get the best out of his drafting position, IMO taking the best (or nearly the best) available with each pick. I thought mbj's pickup of Justin Smith in round three was brilliant--how'd he slip down so far? Best pick of the draft.

What surprised you most about the draft?

How quickly it went. I'm glad we went with IPD's--the research necessary really stretches the team out (a good thing, BTW). I'm not altogether certain how the scoring will work out, but I think it'll be fun to watch and I suspect as we get a handle on the IDP scoring the waiver wire will get a good workout the first few weeks.

If you could start over, would you do anything differently?

I had two offers to move up in return for a Supp draft swap, but it ended up that I felt comfortable right where I was.
