0 Subject: RIFC AA 2008 Draft discussion

Posted by: russelldl - Sustainer [466412420] Fri, Aug 15, 2008, 18:34

Now that the draft is started, we needed a new thread.
I'll start a thread for the rationales once the 2nd round is done (or Promize, when you make your 3rd round pick if want to get it rolling, you can do that also.)

Name says it all. If this was a keeper league I might of picked someone else. Lets hope we stay off the injured reserve list! I curse you last year S. Jackson for killing my RIFC year.

please dont start rationales yet.
We'll start before round 2, and I'll post a new thread for them. Sorry if that was unclear.

russelldl - please mark your draft as a public draft, so that those outside the league may review the results. You can set that in the admin settings at kafenatid.

Definitely didn't expect Jackson to drop that low, also didn't expect Brady to go that high.

I'm back,
I should have posted this yesterday but I missed it:

SPECIAL FANBALL RULES FROM GURU:

“When drafting, there is no need to draft every position. For
example, if you want to skip a kicker, be my guest. However,
the Fanball software will force you to fill each of the 15 active
slots when you set your lineup for each game. You will not have
the ability to leave an active slot blank, so plan your bench
needs accordingly. In particular, if you plan to use a player in
the opening Thursday night game, every roster slot will need to
be filled by the Thursday freeze. You may still make
substitutions prior to Sunday for unfrozen players, but you
cannot have a player active on Thursday night if any starting slot
is vacant at that time.

Note that trades during the draft are allowed. Trades should be
announced here, and may include any combination of picks
and/or players.

Players who are not yet listed at Fanball may be drafted, and if
so, a placeholder player will be assigned to your roster until the
player is available. Once the draft is complete, you may no
longer sign (or protect) an unlisted player. If a player is listed at
Fanball but not yet available at kafenatid, there is a link at the
draft site to request the addition of that player. Try to anticipate
these needs, so that we do not have to hold up the draft while
waiting for a player addition.”

Also, if you want to Add your players to Fanball as you pick them, feel free. You will have to do it eventually so its your call whether you want to do it as we pick or after its over.

Bad news guys. I've had to stop the draft because something strange has happened. The clock was set to start at 7am this morning. It is currently 8:57am eastern and I just checked in.
Somehow, Permdude's pick was skipped, as was my second round pick.
I've deleted the picks back to Permdude's original pick that should still be on the clock and started the clock again.
I'm not sure how it was possible that these other picks were made but hopefully it wont happen again.
The other problem I now see is that anyone who's picks already went off, now has their queues emptied. So please refill your queues if necessary.
In any case, I will restart the draft this afternoon when I get back. Sorry for the delay but I have to go in to work.

Well this definitely hasn't started as planned. We're going to have to make sure we keep a good pace the first few rounds so we don't get behind. I know two other leagues got almost 3 and 2 rounds done over the weekend, the third got about the same as us, but should have their draft running at the moment.

Anyways, I won't be back until this afternoon as well, but it doesn't look like I'll be missing anything.

Forgot to mention, nobody can fill up queues as far as I know, because you can't access the draft home since the draft is stopped. You would have needed to reset the picks and then paused it, rather than stopping I guess.

Yep I don't have access to the draft which means I can't set a queue. Hopefully Russell is still around so he can set it to paused instead of stopped.

russelldl - The problem may have occurred if the clock was started but box was not simultaneously checked to reset the clock. Thus, the clock could have been retroactively applied.

Ok, I'm back and I think I have things sorted out (hopefully).
Fred from Kafenatid emailed and said that it seemed to be a glitch related to not resetting the clock.
Although not exactly Guru's guess from above, which would have explained how Perm Dude got skipped but doesnt explain how I later got skipped.
Basically just a glitch in the system that has been fixed.
Anyway, I will turn the draft back on and we will start from Perm Dude's 1st round spot again.
I won't start the clock until 7 am tomorrow so that everyone has time to reset their queues. Untimed picks will be allowed. Lets also be careful making designated picks for each other, because some people's queues may have been effected. If you make a pick for someone else, make sure they have posted that they have reset their queue.
I apologize to anyone who's picks were prematurely exposed (including mine). I plan to use the same queue as before and I hope no one feels cheated by that aspect of things. I don't know how to correct that part of the problem.
Sorry for the hold up (again).

I should note: I am here all the time, so if someone wants to make me their Designated Picker I will do it for them. Just leave me instructions (ie: take the top player for round W, take the top (position) for round X and the top (position) for round Y, don't use my queue past round Z,) and I will gladly do it for you. If everyone has a queue set and a DP with good instructions this draft will move very quickly and we'll be able to catch up with the other RIFC leagues.

Just noticed it's PM's turn again. Who are his designated pickers, if any? And is his queue available? We could end up waiting until tomorrow morning for another pick if he's not around and nobody can get his queue since he'd time out at 1am when the draft suspends.

If that's the case, I'm going to be extremely unhappy with the situation.

Also, I'm going to mention this now. If we happen to get back to Perm Dude and he times out again, the best thing we can do is give him the top 2 players on the board so his team is not entirely gimp. I think this is what was done in the past in the same situation. Hopefully he'll be around to pick at some point today and can set his queue to available.

This is assuming we don't get access to his queue from Fred. Which hopefully we can.

Ok, I got the first name on PD's list from Fred and made the pick for him. Hopefully he'll get back on before his pick comes around again. But I'll put in another email to Fred if it gets close.
I understand where VP is coming from. My position is that I've been in leagues with PD before and this isnt normal for him. So I'll leave it to Guru if he suggests we make a move. Obciously, if anyone feels strongly about the subject you can feel free to post it on here or email me about it.
As I said, when I commish an RIFC league I always defer to Guru on things like this. I assume he's not going ot pull the plug on PD at this point. But if you have thoughts you can email me and I'll pass them on to Guru.

well, I dont think I'm speaking out of turn when I say that I emailed with PD after his first pick and he did say that it wasn't completely intentional. He was filling the queue and accidentally made the pick (which does happen, I've seen it happen to others). But he decided to stick with it so that we weren't held up any longer and figured he would still have a good pick in the 2nd round.
He is a Cleveland fan I believe. He's definitely behind the 8 ball right now but there are 24 rounds and its certainly possible for him to recover.

I'm heading to the O's game. Should be home around 10 or 11pm. I left a huge queue in the event it gets back to me. My only instructions are that if it gets to my round 4 pick, dont draft a 4th running back with that pick. If I get a WR in round 3 then it doesnt matter, but if I get a RB in round 3, then dont let me take another in round 4. Hope that's clear.

I'd hate to hold up the draft at this point, but something has got to be done. Sorry, but Adrian Peterson (Chicago) is not a 3rd round pick. For the integrity of the league, we can't let this go on any longer.

Also, if we keep running into delays, we might have to look at shortening the clock time if it doesn't look like we'll finish in time.

I just realized also that was who he picked. I actually made the pick for him, but didnt really pay attention to who it was.
I'm not going to stop the clock for him but if I can find a way to change the pick I will.
Fred turned his queue to available for me but I can only see his first choice when it comes around.
Here is what I'm proposing to do. When his next pick comes around (only 5 picks away) I can use the name at the top of the list, go back and make that name his 3rd round pick and then make his 4th rounder with the next name on his list.
Anyone agree/disagree with that idea. We probably have an hour or so before his next pick to decide and I'll run it past Guru also.

The problem is he's getting 2 4th rounders for his 3rd and 4th round picks, after already taking a 4th rounder in the 1st round. Also, who knows what the heck is left in his queue if he just took Peterson.

I see your point Bonka. But I'm not completely sure how else to handle it. I dont want to take the picks of other players off the board. And I dont want to stop the draft any longer than necessary. His next pick is only one pick away now and I think we should wait and see what that would do for him at this point.
Like I said, I completely agree with what you are saying, I'm just not sure what's the most fair way to fix the problem.

Well if his next 2 picks are OK, then just do what you said. If they're off the wall again, I'd say we need to assign him two players at the top of the rankings that would fit his team and possibly find another manager to take over.

Ok, his two picks were somewhat reasonable in my estimation. He got Boldin in the 3rd round which is completely legit. I considered him with my picks right around there.
He took Donald Driver with his 4th pick which is certainly a reach. Also, he currently has no RBs which is a problem because the list is going to get very slim, very fast. I could give him the top RB available but I really dont want to substitute my judgement for his. And I'm definitely not going to hold up the draft. We have to move forward and if his team is soft, so be it. We all get to play against him.

I second that. Even if PD provided us with a list saying he wants a RB with his 5th pick and 6th pick, we'd give him the best available.

While it does take away from the pool for the rest, it would make his team that much more competative at the very least.

well, its not a situation where he's got 4 WRs and nothing else. He's got a QB, TE, and 2 WRs so I'm going to leave it as it is and if he's not back by his next pick, I'll make sure he gets a RB (although I'm not sure who will be left).

Also, we need to start posting rationales. WIth all of the problems we've had I forgot about it. I'll start the thread, please feel free to post your first round rationales with your reasoning for taking your draft slot. You can also post your second round rationale ONCE you have already made your 4th round pick.
Feel free to do them out of order and I'll put them in order as we go on a different thread.

Are rationales required for AA this year?

Also, did the flex position change from RB/WR/TE to just WR/TE this year?

rationales are required.

Also, I believe the flex position is WR/TE but I dont think the change was made this year. I didnt play RIFC last year so I can't say for certain. Check the rules on the regular RIFC thread to be certain.

There never was a flex position before. This year there is a WR/TE in place of a WR slot. Also, rationales were never required before for AA. We did some last year, but only through the first couple of rounds, and not all managers even did that.

Last year the WR/TE spot was tested to replace the 3rd WR spot in all the leagues. This year it's become part of the rules. Rationals aren't required but they are strongly recommended. I write them just so I know what's going on in my head when I make the pick I do. I usually write it right after I make my pick, or right after I set my queue.

Hey guys!

I'm going to post this in every RIFC league...

We need some help in G24. PD has missed two picks and is about ready to miss his third. We need someone outside the league to come in and make his picks for him. Ideally this person will also have a CBS account to make things easier. We have no idea when he will return. Send me a note if you'd like to assist. Thanks!

This is getting to be a bit ridiculous. If PD didnt' have the time to set a Q or be around for the draft why did he sign up. And if he has had something come up he could at least let someone know and find a replacement. We'll be lucky to finish this draft by week 2 right now.
I really hope something isn't wrong with him since he's also missing his G24 picks.

Regardless if something has happened to PD (which would be extremely unfortunate, don't take this the wrong way), we need to keep in mind the 13 other people as well as just getting done on time. We can't afford to have his pick time out every time he's up. We're going to need a replacement or something to get things moving. We will likely have to cut the clock down to 4 hours soon to get the draft done. No need for 6 hour picks in the later rounds anyways.

why not just assign him with a position of need?

For example...give him the best available RB utilizing Sportsline rankings. Not only would it speed up the process, but it would at least give him a fighting chance from week 2 week.

I doubt he'll complain.

For full disclosure - I just agreed to take over Perm Dude's draft until he returns. His queue had been emptied, and it wasn't fair to russelldl to have to make "informed" picks for PD when his own team's picks are only 2 slots away.

I imagine Perm Dude is on vacation all week, so he may not be available to reclaim control until the weekend or the beginning of next week, but in the meantime, I can at least give him some thoughtful picks and also prevent your clock from getting bogged down again.

Unlisted players
During the draft, any player may be drafted, regardless of whether or not the player is listed at the hosting game site. Once the draft is completed, unlisted players may not be added to any roster. This applies for any post-draft waiver processing as well.

In the event that a drafted player is not listed after the draft has completed, a placeholder player will be assigned to the drafting team, to be replaced by the drafted player as soon as he is available.

Priority Claiming
All free agents (any players not on a current roster) are subject to a weekly claiming process at noon on Wednesday. Following the first 6 weeks of the season, the priorities will reset weekly based on the reverse of W/L percentage. After that, priorities will not be reset. Throughout the season, when a player is claimed (either via "free agent priority claim" or a waiver claim), the claiming team moves to the end of the claiming priority list. Following the final regular season game, priorities will be reset based on playoff seed, with the top seed getting the top priority. Thereafter, throughout the playoffs, priorities will again adjust only when a claim is awarded.

Starting at 1:00pm on Wednesday, all free agents may be picked up by any team "first come, first served" without any change in priority status.

(Immediately following the draft, undrafted players will be subject to a priority claiming process, with priorities equal to the reverse of the first round draft order.)

When a player is dropped from a roster, the player will go on waivers for 48 hours. At the end of the 48 hour period, if any team has placed a claim on the player, the team with the highest claiming priority will receive the player. If no claims are submitted, the player becomes a free agent at that time. If a player is dropped within 48 hours of his game freeze, he may not be claimed until the following week's free agent claiming process.

Starting five minutes prior to the scheduled start of each NFL game, no player in that game may be dropped, regardless of whether the player is an active or bench player.

Schedule
13 week round robin
Doubleheaders all weeks 1-13 (play each team twice)
Single elimination playoffs, weeks 14-16

Trades and trade deadline
During the draft, trades may include draft picks. Trades will normally be approved immediately by the Commissioner, assuming they are reasonably balanced. If league managers believe an announced trade is unbalanced, they should protest the trade ASAP.

After the draft, trades will be subject to a review period. For the first 24 hours following a trade, managers may protest a trade by posting a message at the RotoGuru forum, or by sending an email to the Commissioner. If at least 3 managers protest a trade within 24 hours of its announcement, then all managers will be polled within the next 24 hours. If seven or more managers vote to veto a trade, then it will not be approved. If a proposed trade is announced less than 24 hours before the earliest freeze for any player involved, then the entire trade will not be processed until the following week.

If a trade does not receive at least 3 protests, then it will be effective 24 hours after it is announced. If a trade receives at least 3 protests but the protests are not upheld in a full league vote, then the trade will be processed 48 hours after it is announced.

The trade deadline is 11:30pm EST on November 9.

Playoffs
8 teams
Top 6 W/L records are seeded 1-6
Top remaining total points are seeded 7-8
Teams with equivalent W/L records are seeded based on head-to-head first, then total points
Bracket is fixed (no reseeding after each round)

Players at the primary skill positions (QB, RB, WR) and team defenses may not be added for any reason during the playoffs. Free agents at these positions will be locked out after the final regular season game. You may drop a player at one of these positions, but once dropped, that player cannot be added later.

Players at the other positions (TE, PK, IDP) may be added or dropped according to normal regular season guidelines, subject to playoff claiming priorities, if applicable.

If a playoff game ends in a tie score, the team with the better seed shall advance.

Team which are not still active in the Championship playoffs may not make any transactions - adds or drops - even if they are still competing in the Consolation bracket.

I know it's my pick, but I'm waiting to hear from Wolfer. This is his pick from our trade. We talked earlier and since I mistakenly took the 10th pick he'll get my 11th pick and I get his 12th. I e-mailed him when my pick came up 4 hours ago. I set him as a DP and left the free form pick on so he could choose whoever. Hopefully he'll pick soon.

I know that russelldl is out until late. He actually should have processed that trade.

I can see from the Commissioner's account that wolfer has a queue available. I just can't see who it is. But... if I process the trade, I should hopefully be able to pick from his queue. So let me try that....

Hold the phone...

This was the trade:
Trade Announced:
Wolfer trades:
Matt Hasselbeck and his 11th round pick

for

Kyle Trades:
His 6th round (Chambers) and 10th round picks
So, Kyle's 10th rounder should have gone to wolfer, and wolfer's 11th rounder should have gone to Kyle. But Kyle already picked Dansby in the 10th, and wolfer already picker the Bears in the 11th.

So what's the scoop?

Kyle - did you pick Kitna for wolfer?

The system now shows that you picked Kitna at 11.09, but also shows that wolfer missed pick 11.09. I may have processed the trade at the exact moment you were making the pick.

I didn't pick Kitna, I am guessing wolfer did.

The trade is now:

Kyle gives:
Chris Chambers (6.06) and Jon Kitna (11.09)

for

Wolfer gives
Matt Hasselbeck (5.03) and Pick 12.12

It looks good now so I'll use jaydog's queue.

Here is what I think I know.

The trade was originally as stated in post 115. But because it was never processed by russelldl, and because Kyle and wolfer forgot to swap the 2nd leg, they each made their own picks in rounds 10 and 11. Wolfer took the Bears in 11.03, and Kyle took Dansby in 10.06. They then decided to swap 11th and 12 rounders, as mentioned in post 151.

So I think the Bears really do belong to wolfer, and Dansby really does belong to Kyle.

When I learned of the situation, I tried to put through the trade, swapping pick 11.09 to wolfer. At the same moment, Kyle appears to have picked Kitna, and now the system shows two 11.09 picks.

I assume that Kitna was selected for wolfer, but I want to confirm that with Kyle or wolfer. Once I figure that out, we may have to get Fred at kafenatid to undo the duplicate pick 11.09.

I'm back.

First of all, I have to apologize to everyone in the draft. While russelldl seems to be right that this draft is cursed, I certainly seem to have contributed to the thing. I won't bore you with the details, but my vacation essentially consisted of shopping (while worrying about the lack of internet access), taking the kids to the beach (while worrying about the lack of internet access), sneaking in about 30 minutes total on the computer the entire week, and coming back a day early (15 hours of driving straight) to get back in the office here.

I had no idea the cottage not only had no internet access, but that there was no phone line! In addition to football drafts, I have to do a lot of smoothing of feathers this week for a couple of clients who were unable to reach me last week as well.

All in all, a mess, ably handled it appears by russelldl and Guru. My thanks to them for stepping into the breach.

Give me just a couple of hours to clear through the draft sheets and get back to speed. Again, my apologies and thanks for your continued patience. I'm a long-time Gurupie and would *never* do anything like this lack of access intentionally.

I just want to clear this because I've never had a player like this in an RIFC league, but I can play Terrell Suggs at DL since he's eligible to play there on Fanball, right? I mean I know he plays OLB so if he can play DL and get OLB stats that's an obvious boost to my team. If not then I have another backup LB... :-P

Have to wait until Guru can chime in. I think it was an RIFC league a few years ago that someone had Ware and there was a rule put in after that to limit the player to one position rather than being able to change him back and forth. It was too long ago to remember exact details, if it was even an RIFC league to begin with.

I remember the situation with Ware, but I don't remember how it ended. Right now Suggs is only DL eligible on Fanball, so I wouldn't be able to put him at LB if he's declared ineligible to be a DL. I think Russell might be able to do it with some commish tools, but I don't know how he would.
207Guru

Here was how we handled it:

Ware was listed as a DL at the time he was drafted. Fanball later changed his position to LB, eliminating his DL availability.

We decided to allow the team that drafted him to retain his DL eligibility as long as he wasn't dropped. We could not, however, override the Fanball designation, so we had to relax the Fanball rules to allow no DL, and then administer the "Ware exception" manually, by doublechecking each week to be sure that every team had a DL (except for Ware).

I think Ware was eventually released by the guy who drafted him, and at that time we removed his exception and he was treated only as a LB from then on.

I don't think a similar situation has occurred since then.

So I guess we'll have to see how Fanball treats Suggs? According to everything I have read he's going to be starting at ROLB for the Ravens this year, but every rating I see has him listed as a DL.

If Fanball chooses to change his position do I get the "Ware exception" since he was drafted while he was listed as a DL? I guess I'm fine either way I just don't want to be cheating the "system".

This is a holiday weekend and I really doubt we are going to have the whole league available.. Think we should really stress on trying to finish this draft in the next four days.

That is two rounds per day...

Maybe Russell might think about lowering the time a bit inbetween picks.

I've got no problem changing the clock if everyone agrees to that. I don't see it making a huge difference. Wolfer timed out but we haven't had much of that lately. I understand some people may be gone this weekend, but if we aren't done by then, we'd be pretty darn close. So it shouldn't be that difficult to leave a queue to cover your last few picks over the weekend.
If you want me to lower the clock please post on here and I'll change it tonight if it has support.

I'd be for taking the clock down to 4 hours. It seems to make people be more inclined to leave a queue, since they can't check every 4 hours, but might be able to check every 6 hours. I guess it's a psychological thing. :)

Yeah, I'm for taking the clock down to 4 hours as well. VP is about to time out at 4 hours if the clock was changed. That makes 2 picks spanning over 10 hours (16 if you count the off hours), which is absolutely terrible.

I really don't understand why people aren't leaving queues when they're due up in 1-4 picks. I mean...VP had from about 7:30pm yesterday to set a 2 person queue for this pick.

I don't dislike anyone or anything like that, it's just stuff like that really bugs me when it's so easy to avoid most of the time. Dragging out a draft longer than needed is frustrating.

I'm all for dropping the clock as low as you want. I would also like to be finished or at least very close to finished by the weekend. I'll be away over the holiday and would rather not have to leave a 40 person queue if possible.

VP, I didn't pick the second RB for that very reason, but if he had left instructions to pick the top 2 players in his queue regardless of position I would have done just that.

You can leave a queue and set up people you can trust as DPs and give them instructions.

If I opened my queue you would've taken that WR with my pick immediately, and then I run the risk of you (I say "you" meaning anyone fanatically trying to expedite the draft) taking the second WR in my queue in if he hasn't already been picked (which he hasn't) and who I don't want since I got Gaffney.

We've already royally screwed things up by picking for people two times in this draft, and ended up wasting a lot more time than just waiting for that person to pick anyway.

Finally, the DP system is in place for people who know in advance they are not going to be available to make their pick AT ALL. There is no obligation to open your queue, especially when you KNOW you'll be there in the allotted time. Lower the pick time if you want to speed things up, but dont get mad when people don't want to trust their picks to draft speed fanatics.

Just a note on leaving queues, you really you don't have to show your whole list to the person picking for you.. there is an option that you can pick that only shows the 1 slot. If your afraid someone is going to pick your players.

I must say I think this is the latest the kicker run as gone in an RIFC draft I've been a part of. Usually it'll start after all the IDP starters are filled. Maybe that's because the IDP starters were filled late? Maybe it's because we're super smart and awesome. I must admit, I got scared it would start in the teens when about 4 or 5 kickers went, but I knew if I held strong I wouldn't miss out too badly since I was in the middle of the round. One of the perks of not being on the end! :)
Overall pretty good draft after the rocky start. I know I have a championship team!

Even if a kicker run happens...there's hardly any difference outside of maybe the top 1-3 kickers each season. Can easily wait til the last round. Good chance you'll pick up someone better off the FA list. Although the 8th round pick of Longwell followed up with a backup kicker in the 23rd was interesting.

Also, the IDPs didn't go late.

Also, if anyone plans to have a few extra mintues on Monday, I could use a couple of volunteers to double check my work. Basically just to make sure the rules are set correctly and the schedule is set. Email me if you could take a few minutes to do either one of those tasks for me.

According to post 288, Promize selected for him. At this point I don't know if any changes should be made. Everyone else is currently unable to pick someone up, so despite what happened, dan shouldn't be allowed to have free pickings from the entire available player base before claims. I understand Bonka's concern. The only three options I can see here are:
A) Give Gurudan his choice of any non-drafted player in exchange for the kicker he was given.
B) Go back and finish the draft over from Dan's pick.
C) Do nothing.

C isn't really fair to Dan considering he was pretty clear that he didnt need a kicker. He didn't do anything wrong.
B really isn't feasible at this point in time.
A seems practical but there's already some opposition, so if you have an opinion please make it known.

I doubt the pick would even matter. He needs a kicker for a valid roster regardless. So he's got to dump someone from his team if he doesn't get a kicker that round.

Anyways, I don't really care that much. I don't even think there's anyone to grab who all of a sudden is starting and will put up good numbers. It was more just the principle of how all the roster locking and claims work.

Is there going to be a draft recap too? Just curious since I find it interesting to see what people say about their team and the others.

When you set your lineup you'll see above your roster a drop down menu for games. You'll have to choose to set your lineup for each game, it doesn't allow you to automatically do it for both games like AOL did.

Russell, I was looking at the schedule and you only have it set up for single games each week, I think you are going to have to input the second game or set it up for double headers.

I still have to input the schedule. I'm working on it right now.
