0.03 Draft Slot #1

When I found out I was slotted third in the draft order draft, I targeted the #3 pick, figuring I would grab the last of the top three RBs. I think there is a significant drop-off after Westbrook/AP. Also, I prefer to draft near, but not on, the turn, as I feel that allows one to most easily adapt to changing strategies.

When the first overall pick became available, however, all of that went out the window. The opportunity to have the clear #1 player as the bedrock of my team trumped everything else.

1.01 LaDanian Tomlinson, RB, SD

LDT is the definition of a stud. He has been a top 4 RB since his sophomore year in 2002 and has missed only two games in seven years, providing a rare mix of consistency and production. At 29 years of age, his peak is almost over, but I feel he has at least one more year of top end production left in his body. No other player was considered at this spot.

I really think that this season the top 8 picks are truly much better then the 9-14 spots even with the turn- I chose the best available pick that being 2 over all. I am very happy with that

1.02 Adrian Peterson, RB, MIN
This guy does it all. He had a huge break out season last year and I see more of the same for him this season. I would have loved to see LT drop to 2, but since he didnt I am pretty excited to have the next best thing.

Toyed with taking a later pick, but knew that pick 3 would get me one of three players.
And like ability to plan my future picks in pairs on the wrap-around.

1.03 Brian Westbrook, RB, PHI
Really felt this was a no brainer at this point in the draft once both LT and AP were gone.
This is a true case of you know what you are getting.
I fully expect somewhere right at 2000 yards combined between rushing and receiving with 11-13 TDs.
And Curtis being out early for awhile could do nothing but help his numbers.

1.04 Joseph Addai, RB, IND

I really wanted Westbrook here but Cliff nabbed him 1 pick before me. At that point it was Addai, Jackson or even Brady. Jackson is still holding out and I have questions about his O-line and conditioning, I came close to Brady but #4 just seemed too high for a QB in a 4-pt pass league- with the weakest schedule in the NFL I would not be surprised at all if Brady equaled last year’s 50 TD’s but I couldn’t bring myself to take him 4. At any rate I took the safe choice of Addai and thanked Culdeus again that I don’t have the 7th choice.

1.06 Marion Barber, RB, DAL

When I chose the #6 slot I presumed Barber, Gore and maybe Jackson would be available, and all three were.
Barber should get a similar workload as the other two, but Dallas has so many more weapons than either the Rams or Niners that there's no way Ds can concentrate on stopping Barber. Plus, that nose for the end zone.

The #8 slot was the earliest available to me when I picked. I really didn't want to take a gamble on Steven Jackson at the time with his contract situation, and I was afraid if I picked any lower, I would be forced to take this gamble. I was hoping Brady would fall to me, but would have been happy choosing Barber or Gore.

1.08 Frank Gore, RB, SFO

Frank Gore is the top weapon in the 49ers offense. He should catch more passes this season under the Martz offense at the expense of his running numbers. I expect him to produce about 10 TDs and close to 2000 Yds combined running/receiving. He has worked hard to learn the new offense.

1.09 Steven Jackson, RB, STL

I had Steven Jackson ranked as the #4 RB, as I am sure a lot of people do, but his holdout appears to have scared a bunch of people away, dropping him down to me. It really was a no brainer, but I do hate taking a "gamble" in the 1st round. With this pick, I am basically forcing myself to take another 2 RB's in the first 5 rounds to ensure I have a starter if Jackson's hold out lasts into the season. The only other person I thought about taking was Portis.

I really think where you pick this year wasn't nearly as important in years past. That said I decided I still wanted a top tier RB or Tom Brady. I figured 10th wasn't the lowest spot I could pick ensuring me one of these guys.

1.10 Clinton Portis, RB, WAS

I looked at LJ here but I had his sorry ass last year and learned my lesson. Manning was intriguing but I just have a bad feeling about him this year. Portis always puts up good numbers when he's healthy and despite having 6 years of experience he's only going to be 27 this year.

12th pick...with the 14th choice..I was assigned the only remaining pick.

1.12 Larry Johnson, RB, KAN

Late in the first round is a tough spot to generate a producer. The GOOD NEWS.. "LJ" seems to be completly recovered from last years leg problems. The BAD NEWS..KC has (same as last year) ahighly suspect offensive line and a marginal passing offense to keep pressure off "LJ". I am hoping for 10 TD 1000 yrd year.

My preferred slots this season (1, 2, 8) and those around them were long gone by the time my pick came up. I decided to take 13 hoping that I could "squeeze" whoever got the turn, while still having my picks close together. Another practical reason is that my work access is very limited so I wanted to be able to use queues for multiple picks without as much uncertainty.

1.13 Peyton Manning, QB, IND

In a league of this caliber, the odds of having a top 10 guy slip down to this slot was unlikely, and even had I taken the 11 slot, I still wouldn't have been thrilled by the choices. I'm confident that Manning will start the season and display the consistency he has shown for the past decade. I've never had him in any league so it will be nice to have a QB that I can set and forget. Plus I figured Frick would take him (being a Colts fan) if I tried to let him slide to 2.02. I also looked at Wayne and TO but was hopeful that TO would be available.

When you have the 13th selection for draft spot choices are limited. Due to this being a busy time at work I opted for the turn so I could make picks back to back, plus not having to worry about which guy to pick praying the other guy slides through Beezer's picks.

1.14 Reggie Wayne, WR, IND

Beezer is correct, Manning wouldn't have slid past me, not because I'm a Colt's fan, I try to leave that at the door, but because he and Brady are in their own class when it comes to QBs. With more RBBC happening QB and WR are starting to see more prevalence in the first couple rounds of a draft. I think Wayne will expand on his break-out year from last year, the Manning injury is concerning, but we'll see.

2.01 Terrell Owens, WR, DAL

I don't care for TO, but he has been a fantasy monster. Would I have liked a RB here, of course, but TO is an elite WR, versus picking a 2nd or 3rd tier RB. Will I be picking through the scrap heap the rest of the draft looking for RBs, probably, but I can live with that.

2.02 Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, JAX

Well, so much for that whole TO thing. Frick made a smart pair of picks at 14 which made this a lot tougher. The next tier of WR did not thrill me and obviously QB is done, so RB or trading down is the only play here. Trading down didn't make sense here since the RB pool was about to get a lot thinner. Therefore, RB was the play. I looked closely at MJD, Grant, and Graham here.

MoJo is sliding down draft boards everywhere, and there are good reasons for this: he isn't a full-time starter, and he can be wildly inconsistent from week to week. As culdeus has correctly pointed out in the past, the RIFC is far closer to a total points league than a typical HTH format due to the doubleheader scheduling and playoff qualification. This takes a lot of the penalty for inconsistency out of play here.

MJD is a safer pick than Grant or Graham simply because he has delivered this level of performance the past two seasons, while the other guys have yet to deliver a full season's worth of production. Plus, MJD has a lot of upside potential should he start getting more carries. In the meantime, his kick returner status also acts as a tiebreaker in this format.

2.03 Tony Romo QB, DAL

Remaining RB seemed to be less than a sure thing, thus looked to remaining QB's (Peyton and Brady were off the board) reduced the choice to Romo or Brees. Brees is a home town boy (Austin Westlake) and has picked up a premium TE in th off season to add to Colston @WR and Bush/McAlister at RB. NO is unlikely to produce fluid ovrwhelming numbers for Brees unless they overcome last year's disaster and get on the same page. Dallas had a great year offensively and the cast returns intact with the substitution of breakaway threat rookie Jones for the older J Jones who moved to Seattle. As a hard core America's team fan, this was an easy call.

2.05 Larry Fitzgerald, WR, ARI

This was kinda a crappy spot. This pick ultimately came down to McGahee or Fitzgerald. There were a ton of RB's left that I wouldn't mind having as my #2 but almost no other #1 WR's. I have Boldin in G24 so this is kind of a handcuff pick so I won't get mad when one guy steals all the TD's from the other guy.

2.06 Ryan Grant, RB, GNB

I was pretty surprised by the run on QB's and WR's late in the 1st and early in the 2nd round.

When there were still 4 picks before my selection, I was hoping one of 3 players would fall to me: Reggie Bush, Ryan Grant, or Jamal Lewis. I figured that they'd all be snapped up, and I had no idea what I'd pick if they were gone, but luckily, all 3 were available when I came up. As an aside, I could of taken Bush in the 3rd round...wow.

I took Grant because I think the Packers are going to be good, and he is an every down back. There is talk that someone may eat into his carries, but if he can do just 75% of what he did on a per game basis last year, I will be excited to have him as my RB2. If Grant was gone, I would of taken Jamal Lewis. I think he is going to have a great year.

McGahee was the best available RB available here. Not one of my favorite players, but I liked him better the Jamal Lewes or Earnest Graham. I considered a QB or WR, but the top ones were picked, and I thought I could get a 2nd tier QB and WR with round 3 and 4 picks. I thought all the #2 RBs would be gone by my next pick.

Most of my even round picks were driven by the next pick 5 choices away.

In this case I had a whole group of WRs basically all together, so felt the move was to go with a second RB.

Great season last year when he got thrown into the mix and fell into the job due to injuries. Proved what he is capable of and has been rewarded for it by TB with a nice contract.

Expect him to be around 1000 yds rushing, 200 yards receiving and 8-10 TDs.

I felt good that one of the guys I had slotted in my WR1 tier would fall to me at 3.13 until about the end of the second round. Once I saw all those names fly off the board, I knew I needed to make a move in order to not be overly weak at WR1.

weykool offered to trade down from 3.5 and I gladly accepted the deal so I could grab Holmes, who was the last player I had in my WR1 tier. This move worked out even better for me since I still got an RB from the tier I would have picked at 4.02 down at 4.10.

Holmes is in the vaunted third year as a receiver, even though I don't wholly subscribe to that theory. I can validate though that Roethdtywoesaf is still a good QB that can get him the ball and that he is quite talented. If he meets expectations I'll be satisfied, and there seems to be a good shot at him becoming a top 8 WR, even in a run-heavy offense. for Pancho Villa

Was a little surprised to see Bush slip this far. Maybe it's because everybody hates his girlfriend. Having Holt as a #2 WR is pretty flithy. He's missed only 2 games his entire career which is pretty amazing. I wanted a top QB on my team this year. Last year I struggled at the position all year. It came down to Roethlisberger or Anderson. Real tough year to tell on the Rookie RBs and how things will end up falling out.
Think this gives me a very solid #3 RB and there is a pretty good chance that he could end up breaking up the RBBC and end up as the starter.
Big guy, 235 pounds, good speed and balance.
Those that had a chance to watch what he did at Oregon, know that he could end up being special.
Only time will tell.
And I won't need a bye week replacement until week 7, so plenty of time to see how he develops.

7 QBs were already off the board, so knew that my round 5 pick would be a QB if I saw somebody I was willing to take that early, or would wait for awhile.

4.13 Derek Anderson, QB, CLE

All the top QBs were flying off the board. I really would have liked palmer to come back but when he didnt i had to jump on anderson with little thought. I think with Edwards, Winslow and now Stallworth there should be big numbers in his future.

Although i am not sold on Aaron Rodgers as the QB- i think Jennings is a complete stud. I really wanted Mendenhall with this pick and also considered Cotchery here with his new strong armed qb.

5.03 David Garrard, QB, JAX

No splash or anything overly spectacular, but tends to be very efficient.
Had the third best passer rating in the league last year behind Brady and Big Ben.
He threw only THREE INTS.
Gets a few yards rushing to complement his passing yards.
Had 18 passing TDs, but hoping to see 20 plus out of him this season.

Good solid QB and shouldn't really hurt me.

5.08 Roddy White, WR, ATL

I was looking for a 2nd WR at this pick and chose Roddy White. White emerged as a solid WR last season with 1200 Yds and 6 TDs despite working with a number of different QBs. With White getting to work with Matt Ryan at QB, I expect the same or better production this season.

5.10 Tony Gonzalez, TE, KAN

I've never been much on taking tight ends early but Gonzalez was an exception this year. He's been a beast now for a long time and though he's on the back half of his career he still produces. TE's are really hit or miss but Gonzalez provides consistency with getting most of his points from yards rather than TD's.

5.13 Donald Driver, WR, GNB

With my WR1 a little weaker than I would ideally prefer, I wanted to try to get guys I considered to be legit WR2 before they all went off the board.

It's an odd situation when a WR2 is taken before the WR1 on the same team in a non-keeper league, but that's been the case in regards to Jennings and Driver about everywhere this year. While Driver's stats declined last year, he still had over 1,000 receiving yards.

His main scoring undoing last year was only scoring 2 measly touchdowns. I'm better that he'll be more in the 5 TD range this year along with about the same yardage, and that equates to WR2 production in my book.

6.02 Joey Galloway, WR, TAM

I had Galloway higher on my draft board than Driver, but liked the chances of JG getting through just a bit more. The 37 year old was #2 in the NFL last year in YPC (behind some Santonio Holmes guy) and is the undisputed WR1 for the Bucs. I think he'll continue to churn our WR2 numbers this year and that's easily worth a seventh round pick. I didn't seriously look at any other players or positions for both this and the Driver pick.

6.05 Patrick Willis, LB, SFO

I knew the linebacker run was going to happen between now and my next pick so rather than grab one of the many WR's and RB's left I'd go ahead and grab the top LB. Willis was an absolute beast last year. I don't he'll come close to matching his number but I can't imagine he'll be worse than a top 10 LB which is all you can really ask for from a IDP.

6.07 Kevin Curtis, WR, PHI

Curtis had strong numbers 1100 yards, 6 TDs as the Eagles number one receiver. I expect these numbers to improve with a healthy McNabb this season. Solid number 3 receiver for my team. Considered picking a TE, but I thought there was too big a dropoff after the top 4.

Shortly after making this pick, the injury to Curtis was anounced. I would have chosen a different WR (probably Ward) if I heard about the injury before making my pick.

6.12 Ted Ginn Jr., WR, MIA

On most draft sheets would be ranked much lower, but fits well in here due to his returner duties.
Expect a lot more from him this year than what we saw last year.
Was real torn with this pick between Ginn and Hester.
Ginn is the better receiver, and decided to go with him and then hope that I could possibly take Hester on the wrap-around.
Which didn't happen, but that is okay.

Is a burner and has the ability to really fit in and work well in the position he finds himself for the Fins.
And the addition of Pennington as the starter is not going to hurt him.

Not a huge fan of this pick at this time. I really think he could pan out if Lendale White struggles at all. I have seen big things with him on ESPN and heard great things about him on the radio.
