0 Subject: RIFC AA Draft Discussion

Posted by: Toral
- [4155487] Sat, Aug 22, 2009, 20:39

This thread is for draft discussion.

If you know that you have upcoming time constraints, please post them in this thread. (e.g., "I'll be away until 6pm ET, so if my pick is due before then, you'll have to wait.") To the extent that you can alert everyone in advance, you can help others to plan their check-in times accordingly. That's simply good draft etiquette.

Please also use this thread to recruit designated pickers, if needed. If you are a DP check this thread before you pick for someone else.

If you know you will be away when your next pick is likely to be due, please set up a queue in Kafenatid and designate one or more managers to pick for you. Your queue will not be visible until it is your turn to pick. Be aware that, as commish, I am able to submit picks for anyone. So even if you have no designated pickers, if you have a queue and it is marked "available", I will be able to make a pick on your behalf when your pick is due. Therefore, if you do not want your queue used, make sure it is marked "unavailable". If your pick is due and your queue is available, I will assume that you want it to be used unless you have posted explicit instructions to the contrary.

Drafts go better when people use queues as much as they can. Note that RIFC rules allow me to shorten the draft clock for specific managers who repeatedly miss picks or use almost all of their clock before picking.

Players who are not yet listed at Fantrax may be drafted, and if so, a placeholder player will be assigned to your roster until the player is available.

Please do not mention undrafted players.

On Monday morning at 8 A.M. the draft clock will start runnning on Kafenatid. The clock for the first round will be a long 8 hours, to allow for unexpected problems -- people disappearing, people having problems with Kafenatid, etc. This isn't an invitation to wait 7:59 before picking; please pick as soon as you can in the 1st round. On the morning of the day after the second round has started, the clock will be shortened to 4 hours. The clock will be set at 6 hours on weekends. The clock will not run between midnight ET and 8 A.M. ET.

Gang... I leave for airport @ 11:30 AM tomorrow< Sunday. I return home Tuesday night @ 7ish. No one has stepped fwd to work over the phone with me. I hope I can get to a computer periodically Monday and Tuesday before I hit airport @ 3 PM.

If anyone out there can help me via phone let me know before 11 AM tomorrow (Sunday).

BTW..it would certainly help if chad1978 would pick before I head to air port. I can leave a que...that is something I have never done for a 1st round pick.

As stated I have a cross country flight monday morning. I actually will take off right when the draft starts and willbe without internet until 4-5 EST. I will see how the draft runs these next 36 hrs to see if I leave a queue for my 1st round pick. I will not be leaving one for my second round one however (which makes the first round one somewhat pointless as we wait 2 picks later anyways).

Does this sound acceptable and fair?

That sounds fine. You might leave me as your only DP so your queue doesn't accidentally get used twice. (Although if a queue is accidentally used against instructions left in this thread I can stop the draft and undo the pick.) I hope we proceed enuf so that you feel you can use a queue; the manager picking after you hasn't signed up at Fantrax yet or responded to my requests here that I do so and I have some concerns about whether he's going to show up and draft. If not I'd just as soon know as soon as possible.

First time drafting with a queue on Kafenatid so my apologies up front if I blow something. I'm going to work on my queue now. I'll likely need a DP from 7AM-5:30PM EST this week.

Something screwy has happened with Kafenatid showing Peter N. up but VP as not having picked. I suspect it happened when I set the clock for tomorrow.

Peter N: don't pick until VP has.

VP: if you can't pick directly when you are ready just say here who you want and I will enter it.

No problem. As I mentioned in the previous thread, I have opened Kafenatid this weekend but the draft doesn't "officially" start till Monday and no one is under any obligation to pick today.

Since the draft has not been moving so fast this weekend I will not be leaving a queue for tomorrow morning. As the 9th pick of the day I doubt that I will leave you guys waiting too long. I feel being there so i can decide which players and positions have the best chance of making it back to me on the turn is important, especially this early.

As said earlier I will be back between 4-5 EST.

Agreed. As of right now it seems like this may not be the kind of league that responds to gentle suasion. There are absolutely no available queues left right now on Kafenatid, and only one unavailable, far from the action.

We will see how things go tomorrow. Perhaps some will have to realize that there are some more persuasive methods at our disposal.

1. The clock is set and we're off!

2. Bearclaw -- your queue is available. That's a longer queue than anyone should really have to leave. I'm pretty sure you'll get a chance to review it again before we get back to you.

Trying something different this year. I almost always go RB with my first two picks, but didn't see anything tempting so went with Wayne. I would've taken Portis, but he was picked a couple picks before.

There was...unfortunately yesterday when I tried to correct an adjustment in the scoring system, Fantrax ate the whole scoring system, erasing everything. Until I re-enter it (which will be the third time of entry), probably tomorrow, scoring stats will not appear.

We can't have the clock run for 5 and one-half hours in prime time and make no picks. And very few people are using queues.

I am shortening the draft pause by one hour at each end. If we can't do two rounds tomorrow without reason the clock will be shortened to 3 hours.

Fair enuf. I'll leave the pause in place in the morning then.

But really, my point is that when someone takes the full amount of time to pick, the next 3 or 4 people at least should have queues set up and available immediately. In my experience, long draft problems start when someone takes forever to pick -- that can happen -- and no one is ready to pick after them. That's a sign people aren't caring and then things really start to drag.

I almost always use the designated picker function and leave a queue. It works great and I don't have to constantly check the draft. I'm going out of town this weekend with limited access, but I'll find a way to manage. I'm going to load up my queue before I leave town and check-in when I can. I'll give my info to ds too and he can call me at his convenience.

1 QB
2 RB
2 WR
1 WR/TE
1 TE
1 K

1 DL
1 LB
1 DB
3 additional IDP (flex)
9 bench
24 Total

Therefore:

1. 24 rounds. No max/min restrictions on who you draft.

2. Note the flex is a WR/TE flex.

The scoring system is been entered again on Fantrax. They had an outage while I was doing it, which happily only ate about one-third of what I had entered.

See the instructions at the start of the thread: "If your pick is due and your queue is available, I will assume that you want it to be used unless you have posted explicit instructions to the contrary." This is taken directly from the guidelines used by the Guru in all Rotoguru Challenge leagues.

If you don't wish your queue to be used immediately, give instructions like "Please don't use my queue until x minutes after the previous pick."

I took that as an instruction for that round, as I think 53 indicates. That was yesterday, after all. If you are in a position to check in every 30 minutes or so, and are not sure that the guy at the top is the guy you want, you might make your queue unavailable.

Or just make that same request for every 2 rounds (one request in the odd-numbered rounds heading down should be enuf).

You also stole my handcuff ;) I'll send you a trade offer, but I don't know if it'll have enuf value.

Yes safeties count as DBs. The point of the above comment is that Phillips's no longer an LB.

Do players qualify based on previous year games or current years games played at a position?

Unfortunately, they qualify based on what the fantasy website lists them at. It's not my favorite method to make the determination, but it is essentially the only option. Otherwise the league lineup configurations become significantly more difficult to enforce.

Fantrax must update frequently since Phillips only switched back to DB a few days ago. I only made the note in post [80] because I wanted the manager to realize he would be up a DB and down a LB. Plus I figured Toral would make the correction at Kafenatid.

I was a little slow on the uptake there, but I checked back on RIFC policy, which is, to quote Guru, "the clock will be manually advanced to skip past anyone who already has a pick in arrears, unless other arrangements have been made in advance of that pick."

I've got a queue for round 19 and hopefully it lasts that long. I'm going to be without access for most of the day tuesday. But I'll do all I can to make my picks. Please dont use my queue for round 20.

I hace stopped the draft. IHP has now missed two picks and fallen a little more than a round behind. In RIFC in the past on at least one occasion picks have heen made for managers who fall too far behind. I believe first and second round picks were made for a manager who disappeared for the first two rounds. The purpose is to avoid having a team become uncompetitive.

The task would be to identify two seeming needs/holes in the team's roster and fill them with picks made in some objective fashion. In our case the obvious solution would be to take the consensus highest pick from among the other 3 RIFC leagues at the two positions (or three positions, if we adopt the different timetable I discuss below.)

The other question would be when to do this. My rule of thumb has been to do this when a manager falls a round behind (14 picks made). IHP is 2 picks more than that behind now. The other possibility would be to allow the draft to continue until IHP's next pick. That would give every manager 2 picks made "ahead" of where they otherwise would be, equalizing everyone's competitive advantage.

I invite your input.

My vote would be to allow each manager to make 2 picks unless IHP returns and makes his picks first.

I've left a queue for Tuesday as I won't have internet access until evening. I'll check in as soon as I have access to not hold everyone up.

Upon further consideration, I think you're right. In a few minutes I will restart the draft. I will stop it after Motley Crue makes his next pick, if IHP does not make his picks.

I have left a queue that can be used for rounds 20 and 21 subject to the following request/demand. please do not pick players at the same position in rounds 20 and 21. If next player in queue for 21 is same position as player taken in round 21...DO NOT PICK FOR ME IN ROUND 21!! Wait for me to return. (s/b back before noon EST on Wednesday the 2nd.

My internet went out yesterday afternoon. My ISP diadnosed it as the power cord and got me a new one overnight -- but that's not the problem. So I will have spotty internet access for the next few days, basicalls can be counted as hors de combat. I suspect I need a new modem.

So, DO NOT COUNT ON ME TO MAKE PICKS FOR YOU until I let you know that I have full access. You will need to set up other DPs

If this thing doesn't get fixed by Friday, I'll have very little access over Labour Dav weekend when I was planning (at the latest) to enter the picks and have one waiver period before the first game.

So I am looking for a substitute/deputy commish to whom I can (temporarily I hope) transfer commish powers on Fantrax on Friday. VP, i think you were willing to commish? Other volunteers welcome.

A minor disaster here. I picked for Taxman and others, then read his instructions and thot I had made a mistake. Reading it again, not. but in trying to cancel the picks (can't find the secret instructions without my notes) I accidentally skipped Footwedge's and Motley Crue's picks.

IHP and others: DO NOT PICK until Footwedge and Motley Crue have picked.

Draft will resume. 7 minutes of Internet time left. See you tomorrow, hopefully with a new modem.

Well, well, I'm back. It appears that new power cord did the trick after all. Tho it wasn't working when I left. I still think it's the freaking modem.

russell dl is up. chad1978 timed out legitimately and can pick any time.

I apologize for the disruption today.

We're done!

Later today I will enter the players at Fantrax. I will give you a day or so to check your players.

In a little while I will open a draft recap thread where you can review the draft.

We will then have a waiver period: all undrafted players will be available to be claimed. At the moment I'm thinking of having the waivers run Tuesday. The waiver order will be the same as in RIFC which I believe starts with the last team to draft in the 1st round, but I will check that.

Thanx for your cooperation in getting thru the draft.
