I imagine we'll garner a plethora of tastes here. Ought to be interesting.
For me, the best song ever is Hotel California by the Eagles. |

I do a lot of walking to and from work with my IPod, and I've found over time that the tempo of the music I'm listening to really plays a large role in the amount of time it takes me to get to work on any given day. Just last week as I was making my way through the crowd, one of the meanest grooves ever recorded started playing, and it probably added an extra five minutes to my commute. The Payback by James Brown is one of those mid-tempo funk grooves that won't just get you walking slower in time with the beat, but you'll actually get a little swivel in your hips and shoulders as you go along. At over seven and a half minutes long, I actually grooved myself most of the way around the block before the song ended. Recorded around 1974, The Payback is a song about a cuckolded fellow who's really pissed off at his girl, and really, really pissed off at the guy who's managed to "get down" with her. The break-downs in this song are all very hot, but the song's best feature is that it contains one of the all-time greatest lines, "I don't know karate, but I know ka-razie!!"

Seriously, though it seems like albums made by women are almost totally ignored in this thread.
Just proves how this is such a one sided discussion mostly about rock albums. No other forms of music.

You know how some people can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when JFK was shot? or when the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occured? or when they had their first kiss? Well, I can tell you exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard Boogie Nights, by Heatwave. I was in high school and I was one of the last people left in the stands after a football game. It was chilly, I had to pee, and I was looking for a bathroom. Ok, so maybe I don't remember ALL the details... the point is, Boogie Nights came on, I heard it for the first time that night, and I had a full bladder. Actually, I spent many years after that night just trying to hear the song again so I could figure out it's name. At the time I would have been embarrassed to acknowledge that I was stalking a disco tune, which is probably why it was so hard for me to pin down the name of the song in the first place. Fortunately I'm over that now, so I can tell you that this is a really great number from the pre-sampling era of 1976. I think. I certainly don't remember being in high school in 1976. Boogie Nights features groovy vocal arrangements, nice drumwork (including a jazzy song intro), and an oddity in the disco genre -- harp. If you listen carefully you can even hear the strings vibrate as the lower notes are being "strummed" or whatever it is you do to a harp. Do you "pluck" a harp?

Here's a freebie guys... just played "Do You Remember" by Jack Johnson for the girlfriend... I thought she was gonna cry. I could see how if you were married this song would be even more appropriate. Use it as you see fit... maybe some flowers and the lyrics... or open a mix cd with it... (I learned how to play it on guitar and stumbled through it).
There you go. I just scored you some points!

I think any song by CCR would be right up there, UB40 - The Way You Do The Things You Do, Van Morrison - Have I Told You lately/ Gypsy Soul, Sexual Healing and Stand By Me are high on my list. Live - Lightning Crashes, Lauryn Hill's album is the best "chick" cd i can think of. Fleetwood Mac has lots of great songs aswell. Same as Eurythmics and Roxette. Missy Elliott and Timbaland and Magoo are the best in Hip Hop ever!
Ill think of others later..

1 * * * Someone took a grapefruit * * * * Wore it like a hat * * * * * I saw someone under my kitchen table 57 * * Talking to my old tom cat * 4 * They were talking about hockey * 1 * The cat was talking back * 5 * * Long about then every-thing went black * 1 * * Wasn't that a party (CHORUS)
* 4 * * I'm sure it's just my memory * 1 * * Playing tricks on me 2 * * * But I think I saw my buddy * * 5 * Cutting down my neighbour's tree (CHORUS)
GO TO PAGE TWO
NOTES: - Chords change on each verse - no pattern - Last verse can be raised a whole tone
WASN'T THAT A PARTY (PAGE TWO)
* 4 * * Billy Joe and Tommy * 1 * * Well they went a little far 2 * * * They were sitting in the back yard, blowing on a sireen * * 5 * >From somebody's police car

I've looked and looked for an mp3 of this tune and cannot find one. :( Oh wll. Might have to find and spring for a cd now.

Have you ever been listening to your mp3 player and come across a song you've never heard before and can't remember ever putting on your player, by a band you know nothing about? Killing in the Name mysteriously showed up on my ipod recently as I was sitting in traffic on my way to work. Having this song come on was like a frying pan in the face, in a good kind of way. Awesome guitar riffs, pointed yet somewhat unintelligible lyrics, and the sheer and intense anger in the vocals really make you wonder what happened to these guys when they were younger. But then I guess you'd expect a little excitability coming from a band called Rage Against The Machine. I'm not completely sure what the song is about, except that I'm fairly certain it's an indictment of KKK members who practice their machinations as badge wearing law enforcement officers. I was surprised to learn that the song is from 1992, which means that I was in even more of a musical daze during that period of my life than I remember. What else? Political implications aside, kids living with their parents should turn this song up to 11. Parents living with their kids should turn this song down to 3. (Note to self: get more RATM.)

Rage's front man, Zack de la Rocha, left a couple of years back. The reformed under the name Audioslave with Chris Cornell (formerly of Soundgarden) fronting.

Audioslave has a much different feel than RATM. RATM pushed the political lyrics, mostly because of Zach. Now that Zach is gone, I find the new found Audioslave, well, average. There isn't it that something that gives it volume and depth. I find RATM much deeper in quality- due to lyrics, Zach's flow, and of course, the funk of the beat.

RATM pushed the political lyrics, mostly because of Zach.
That's not entirely true. Guitarist Tom Morello and Zack are virtual twins in terms of political philosophy and activism, including its inclusion in the music. The scaling back of political message in the music of Audioslave was a deliberate choice. Interestingly, if you read the Wikipedia entry on Audioslave, it seems to suggest that Cornell was the reason for that, but I've also read interviews with Morello where he seemed to indicate that he wanted to concentrate on the music not the message (of course, he may have just been saying the politically correct thing... no pun intended... band politics here). I say it's interesting because Chris Cornell is no lightweight when it comes to including political message in his music. I actually prefer Audioslave, but by the slimest of margins. The only difference being that the typical rap posturing and grandstanding that Zack inserted grates on my nerves after 5-6 songs.

You can't go wrong with any of Rage's albums. I'd probably start out with their self titled album(it's the one with the guy burning himself on the front).
I haven't bought either of Audioslave's albums but I'd probably go with their first album. The 3 radio releases from this album, Cochise, Like a Stone, and Show me How to Live, were all great songs. Of course you need to be a fan of Soundgarden and Rage to truly appreciate their music.
