0 Subject: Movies That Surprised You: Good or Bad

Posted by: Cosmo's Cod Piece

Se7en is on TNT this afternoon and it got me thinking about when I saw it in the theater.

I knew that with Morgan Freeman the movie couldn't be that bad and it was about cops. My wife (then girlfriend) noticed it had Brad Pitt so we were in total agreement on going to the show.

I figured Pitt and Freeman would shoot some bad guys, drink some coffee and call it a day. I had no idea that it would get that deep.

I didn't know that this movie would be so good. I remember walking out of the theater thinking about the ending (not much thinking required in the decision process, but you know what I mean) and I realized just how surprised I was that this movie was that darn good.

I had that happen with From Dusk Till Dawn with Clooney and Tarantino as well. Although that movie doesn't hold a candle to Se7en.

Anybody else in GuruLand have a similar experience?

The Descent was very nice. A little too dark in terms of the actual lighting, but I do recommend it if you're in the mood for a scare.

Good to hear about "All the Kings Men" sarge. Sean Penn is a great actor.

I made the ultimate sacrafice, gave up a day of NFL football and went to see "Dream Girls" with Mrs. Flood. To my suprise I enjoyed it very much. Eddie Murphy really can sing. Great music and solid story about the old days of R & B. Loosely based on Motown, Dianna Ross, Quincy Jones, Barry Gordy and many of the great soul preformers of that era.

I think Eddie Murphy had a top 10 with his "My girl want to party all the time".

RE Little Mis Sunshine. I didn't like it until the very end.

RE The Descent. Didn't care for it. Really not much of a plot either.

Loved World Trade Center. Liked Invincible. Liked Beerfest. Really liked Superman Returns. Hated Scanner Darkly.

perfume -- loved it except for hoffman. different but great.

borat -- funny but it could have been funnier. guess i've been too many utube clips. a little disappointed.

casino royale -- dumb ending but craig is a great bond. loved the more physical role.

run lola run -- haven't seen it for years, but it's just as great everytime. just goes to show how random events/timing can change everything.

super ex-girlfriend -- crap. saw it on a plane.

snapdragon -- yes, there was a time pam anderson was considered hot.

Assuming it succeeds as a comedy, I'd laugh. If however, it is a serious attempt at portraying a vast conspiracy...*yawn*.

The Fluid house was in movie mode this past few weeks (not much going on with flu bug running through house)...

The Game - Rented this '02 flick, looking for a great movie and got one.

Superman Returns - Everything else new was checked out, but this one wasn't. I see why now. Complete snoozer.

Galaxy Quest - Had never seen this but had been meaning to. Good for what it was, but am not real certain what that is.

Cars - Watched this about 100 times with the little Fluids. I love this movie. Going to buy the soundtrack sooner or later.

Zathura - Cleaning the house, found this one under the DVD player, so we stuck it in. What I love about this movie is that its Sci-Fi without the CGI overkill. Old School movie making. Fun movie with the kids.

Little Miss Sunshine - Loved this show. A real family. Ending was just great.

Night at the Museum - Just a fun flick. Went with oldest boy and he enjoyed it.

I was disappointed with The Good Shepherd. The acting was good, it was just that the plot was so schizophrenic with the jumping between periods of time that it made it more difficult to follow.....and in the end, there was just no real resolution to tie it all together nicely.

RSF,
The Game is a good movie. I had no idea what it was about before watching it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Superman Returns - It was okay, but I'll admit to liking all the superhero stuff a bit too much.

Galaxy Quest - It's been a while since I've seen this one, but I remember it being fun and entertaining.

Cars & Night at the Museum- Watched and enjoyed both with my son.

Zathura & Little Miss Sunshine - I have both and have been meaning to watch them (along with about 30 other movies). Will move both of these up on the list.

Other recent movies I've seen:
Accepted - Mostly funny and yet very predictable.

Talladega Nights - Funnier than I thought it would be, but I didn't have high expectations. Who knew that there would actually be a plot to go with the comedy?

The Covenant- I expected more. The story felt rushed. Some of the special effects were good, but overall a disappointing movie.

I also want to echo all the Lucky Number Slevin backers from above. That is one of the better movies I have seen in a while. If you haven't seen it, don't read another word about it and go rent it. You won't be disappointed.

Bad Arguments? Bad Logic? You must be talking about the 9/11 Commission - unfortunately that's not a movie pd. Anyway, that's been thoroughly debunked in a previous thread.

Just watched this movie via netflix. Whoa man, I loved it. A poor man's Anchorman, which is a classic. I thouroughly recommend the DVD, as the gag reel, line-o-rama's, and outtakes are phenomenal. I actually cried during the gag reel.

"Shut up Chip before I hit you in the back of the head with a shovel." Walker and Texas Ranger are the best.

Talladega Nights was pretty good. I was hoping for a classic like The Waterboy, but it's still worth seeing.

I love it when he prays. He only does it to "Baby Jesus". Then they have an argument about it.

"Baby Jesus, all snuggled in your crib with your DVD player watching Baby Einstein videos learning your shapes and colors,....."

SHAKE 'N BAKE BABY!!!

Superman Returns was....eh....OK. The Christopher Reeve movies are superior (with IV being the exception).

I watched King Kong on HD-DVD and that was amazing.

Caution: Once your kids sees Cars, you will be forced to watch it over and over again. I bet I've seen it 100 times already--maybe much more. I am getting tired of it, but it really is one of the best movies of the year from an adult's perspective as well.

Beer League was ok. Had some funny moments. Naked Mile about the same. Not the greatest, but a good time passer. I like Taladega Nights.

Was supposed to get Snakes and the Covenant but they bypassed me on my Netflix queue so may see them later this month. I am not expecting much from either but they both look interesting. I've heard bad reports on Snakes, but I'm still getting it. Netflix has been slower this month as expected with all the holiday mail and the added no-mail days the past week or two.

We enjoyed Ong-Bak. Not part of the recent wave of visually-spectacular martial arts flicks from Hong Kong, such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers. No wires used to depict characters who can almost fly. Just a very good martial arts/action movie out of Thailand, showcasing muay-thai style fighting. Lead Tony Jaa is very good and does not use a stunt double.

Ong-Bak 2 is currently in production.

I enjoyed Ong-Bak a lot also. Pretty impressive movie.

I also really enjoyed "Hero" with Jet Li. I thought the story was great and that overall, it is a superior movie to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

I saw Some Kind of Monster a few weeks ago. It was very good. I think even non-fans of Metallica would enjoy it.

I personally enjoyed The Aristocrats, although it's not hilarious. There are some funny bits, and it is a documentary, so be forewarned. George Carlin plays a prominent role.

I saw The Descent Friday evening. That was one of the better horror films I've seen in the last few years. It's not fantastic, but it was better than average. Clastrophobics beware.

finally saw 'the prestige', really good movie and i liked the fact that they told you everything that was going on in the movie if you paid attention.

Just saw 'Smokin Aces' last night pretty much what i expect lots of violence with some pretty funny scenes mixed in though the ending was terrible and left me with some negative feeling for the whole movie.

I like alot of movies but I really disliked Garden State. It came off as very pretentious and alot of times just seemed like an avertisement for The Shins. These quotes really killed it for me:

"You gotta hear this one song, it'll change your life I swear."
-Natalie Portman, about to play The Shins

Zach Braff: Hey Albert? Good luck exploring the infinite abyss.
Cave Guy: Thanks. Hey, you too.
--Garden State

"And I can remember, even as a little kid, thinking to myself, This is love... this is love."
-Zach Braff

"That's life. If nothing else, its life. It's real, and sometimes it ****in' hurts, but it's life, and it's pretty much all we got. "
-Natalie Portman

"This is life."
-Zach Braff

"For the first time let's just allow ourselves to be whatever it is that we are."
-Zach Braff

"This isn't a conversation about this being over. I'm not like, putting a period at the end of this. I'm putting like... an ellipsis on it."
-Zach Braff

Didn't care much for Garden State. Didn't hate it, just didn't do anything for me. Portman would look even better if she'd gain a little weight.

Didn't care for Clerks 2 either. I knew I wouldn't but watched it anyhow.

At least I got to teh end of both of them.
