I'll take a shot.
Look at http://rotoguru1.com/cgi-bin/gallcards.pl?tourney=26.
Then look at the total birdies and eagles that Verplank had and some of the others around him, and the relative prices of those players.
Basically, Verplank was T-24 in the tournament, but had a below-average number of birdies for that figure. But his price was well above T-24.

Yep.
Verplank actually ranked #58 on the basis of his eagles, birdies, and pars, taking into account not only the number also the relative difficulty of those holes.
By itself, that wouldn't necessarily prompt a price decline. But because he was one of the higher priced players in a field that was relatively low-priced, his price declined.
If he had started out at a price of about $800, his price would have been unchanged.
If he had started out at a price of $500, he would have gained.
