0 Subject: Kafenatid.net Hockey Tools/Schedules

First off, for those who didn't happen to follow the baseball season, Gleem.net has now moved to Kafenatid.net. It's a long story, but the short story is that a friend owns Gleem.net and when problems arose, I was powerless to get them fixed. I fully own, host, and manage Kafenatid.net, so it is in my complete control; the way I like it.

I plan on using this one thread for all Kafenatid.net tools and schedules updates, feedback, and general discussion, so if you have anything to say about them, say it here.

The first tool/schedule released is the 2002 NHL Schedule. One of the new additions you'll see to the 7 and 28-day schedules is some background color highlighting. As the explanation at the bottom of the page notes, this highlighting shows:

Green: Team plays 4 or more games over the next 7 days starting with the highlighted game date.

Red: Team plays 2 or fewer games over the next 7 days starting with the highlighted game date.

NOTE: These highlights only appear on the days a team actually plays a game. In a lot of instances, a team will actually qualify for one of the highlights on a non-game day, but the schedule becomes too crowded looking with all the highlighting shown and that highlighting isn't as important as the game day highlighting.

As you may have been able to figure out, if a team plays 3 games over the next 7 days, there's no highlighting.

Stay tuned for more updates.

UPDATE

I made a few updates to the Sortables...

  1. You can now specify a number of players to display using "Max Players." The default is 100, though displaying more doesn't seem to affect download speed on my cable modem, so you should be ok with whatever number you want. FYI: Only those players who have played at least 1 game will show up in the Sortables, no matter how many players you want to see. The current total number of players that have played at least 1 game is 654, with Miikka Kiprusoff being the worst in terms of TSNP at -98 for the season.
  2. The font for the main display has been reduced by 1 point for multiple reasons, including print out size, etc. If this is too small, deal with it. ;) Seriously though, if it's too small, just let me know
  3. The player page has been updated with a few minor changes. The distinction between a game date and a non-game date has been decreased a little to make the stats for non-game days easier to read. Let me know if this was decreased too much.
  4. A few other minor things were updated/changed that you probably won't notice much, if at all.

thanks KKB! I like being able to see every player in the sarts because I use it to make my own team spreadsheet.

Any chance of getting a schedule tacked on (ie - 1.3.56.8.) to the sartibles and then some projection options?

UPDATE

For all you TagTeam'ers, you'll like the new addition to the Sortables: You can now choose a "Conference" for the players you want listed. So we should never have problems with people picking up players from the wrong conference, right? ;)

J, your schedule wish could be granted as soon as tomorrow if everything goes right. I think I'm going to steer clear of the projections for now, mostly because I'm happy with what I have for the Offense/Defense Schedules and that's about as specific as I like to get with projections. I may change my mind later, but that's where I'm at right now.

Quick question about projections. What do you all want? My initial thought is a 21-day straight projection based on number of games and TSNP/Gm year-to-date.

In other words, Mr. Mario is currently averaging 84 TSNP/Gm. Over the next 21 days, he has 8 games, so it would be projected to 672 TSNP. Does that sound like a reasonable way for the projections to be determined? If not, suggestions?

My initial idea is also to put "21-day Projected" under the "Point Period" drop down so that it would take full advantage of the "Total TSNP", "GP", "TSNP/GP", and "TSNP/GP/$M". Thoughts?

KKB - instead of using YTD, I'd use last 30 days, if possible.

also, this may be a little trickier, but, for goalies...can you do something like Guru does for pitchers, instead of games played, use eligible games? As it stands now, using those projections would get you a bunch of backup goalies towards the top of the list (Divis is #1, Storr #3, Legace #9, Tugnutt #10)

Other than that, sounds perfect!!

J, I could, but unlike pitchers, most #1 goalies are going to play a very large majority of their teams games. If you get too many backup goalies at the top, you can just increase the "Min. Games" category to get rid of the scrubs.

BTW, I think you're right about using 30-day TSNP/Gm. Probably a lot better representation.

It would also help give a better idea of how often the #1 guy plays.

ie - Manny has an 81 average, but has played in 4 of their ?6? games. If he doesn't play, that should count as a 0, because if I'm gonna buy him, I'd like to also project based on how often the guy will typically sit out. Either way, its not a perfect science of course.

Another idea - the point period and Col B avg are both defaulted to YTD, perhaps change the defualt on one of em? Obviously at the beginning of the season it doesn't matter, but I'd make one of em 30 days or 15.

Gotcha, gotcha. Basically, I can take into account the percentage of games played by the player, then apply that percentage to the number of games over the next 21 days and then apply that to the 30-day TSNP average and that should give a fairly accurate projection.

Also, thanks for the head's up on the Col. B. Hadn't really looked at that, but I'll default it to 15-day.

I used to rely on the 15 (and sometimes even 7) day ppg histories to calculate projections. This, of course, allowed you to key in on the hotter players more easily. The 30 day numbers seemed to mask those players and require you to pay attention to multiple outside information sources. Guess I'm lazy but I'd rather cheat and see it all in one glance. Sorting for 30, 15 and 7 would be very helpful in my opinion.

After that's done please modify the totals with a strength of opponent multiplier, a home bonus, an ice-time index, an injury probability factor, a jet-lag function...

Ok, here's a good one. The Col. B. already defaults to "15-day TSNP/Gm", it's just not displaying correctly in the top form set. If you check the stats and the bottom form set, you'll see that it's 15-day. I'll fix that form and it should be good to go.

rinkwide, what I'll likely do is set up a Projection-YTD, Projection-30, Projection-15, and Projection-7 within the "Point Period" form field and just have the difference be the TSNP/Gm average used to calculate each one. At that point, you could choose whichever one you want.

J (and others), looks like the 21-day schedule addition will be going live tonight. Just FYI.

Actually, it will sort, but for some reason it's including anyone with 0 games and putting them ahead of all the "regular" players, so I'll look into that tonight. It's putting those players at the top because it's division by 0, which is infinity (according to the database and programming), which is greater than any of the other TSNP/GP totals.

I haven't figured out how to sort by teams for more than 100 players. I have a fuzzy memory that
philliephan had a similar problem but was able to change the 100 limitation to show all players.

This product will be a huge help to those that don't follow hockey closely but still want to get involved with the TSN hockey games.

Thanx again!!

Taxman, just do a sort by "Team" (or any other sort) and set the "Max Players" field, to the right and above the "Get Stats" button to 9999 and you'll see them all. There are currently only 658 players that are "active", but 9999 makes sure you always get all of them.

  1. 21-day Schedule has now been added to the main Sortables page.
  2. 7-day TSNP/GP fixed, as well as a few others that were having the same error.
  3. Projections are in the works. I'll post more info about when to expect them later tonight.

Things are looking good for the projections.

FYI, I'm going to base the games played percentage for all projections on the YTD games played. I'm doing this because if a player misses one game, then the 7-day projections are going to be grossly inaccurate.

For instance, if a player has played 29 out of 30 games, that's a 97% games played percentage. If that player has 10 games over the next 21 days, then it's likely that they'll play all 10. If I use the 7-day games played (we'll say the team played 3 games) for the 7-day TSNP/GP Projection ("Projection-7"), then that player will only be projected to play 7 games. For a player like Lemieux, that's a difference in projection of about 250 TSNP.

Now you may wonder about an injured player. If a player is injured, then they'll slowly move down the charts because every game their team plays without them, their games played percentage will take a hit (minimum of 1.2% for each game missed). I think the negatives of this slow movement down is far better than the inaccuracy pointed out above, sooooooooo...

The different projections will be based on TSNP/GP for the period selected, but the projected games played will be based on the YTD percentage.

FYI, I found a couple of minor errors that I'll have to fix tonight. One of the biggest ones is the 21-day schedule is starting with tomorrow's games pre-noon. It's not supposed to switch over to that schedule display until post-noon, so I'll be checking into it.

The other errors are just related to the projections and might hold up the availability of projections another day, but I'm hoping that it won't. I'll post tonight to keep everyone updated.

Somehow, I managed to put the Projections version of the Sortables live sometime between last night and tonight, but I've taken it down until I can make sure the projections are calculated correctly during the stats update. I apologize that this means the Projections will be delayed another night, but I want to make sure they are being calculated correctly before they are being used.

UPDATE

The 21-day Schedule should now be fixed. Until 12-noon, the 21-day Schedule should include the games for the current day. After that, it should switch over to show the next night's games as "1".

As I mentioned above, the Projections should be ready to go tomorrow. It looks like I've managed to fix the errors I found within the Projection calculations, but I want to make sure it works properly tomorrow. If so, Projections will be available starting tomorrow night.

TLW, actually, there are a few (though I suppose they could be "silent" Gurupies). I could use advertising if I was really concerned about site traffic and/or doing the site for a living, but since I do it all for fun and coding/database experience/practice, it doesn't really matter. The biggest part of the site isn't the games anyhow. The other pages of the site have always gotten the most traffic by far. The games are just an add-on mostly for the Gurupie community since they started with the Pick'ems and MadBall games 2 seasons ago. The site overall has been averaging about 4000 hits/day in October and about 7000 hits/day since the Sortables went up, so the traffic is more than fine for what I would like to see. My target has always been a 10k average and I've actually exceeded that a few days this month, so I'm happy.

Besides, if it got bigger, I would just have to buy more bandwidth. What's the fun in that? ;)

I opened up the dictionary and started browsing. Saw the word "Caffeinated" and liked it since everything now days is DEcaffeinated. Of course, Caffeinated.com was taken, so I looked up the phonetic spelling: Kafenatid.

The domain was more for my web design business than for the fantasy sports site, but when Gleem.net went down, I just transferred it to Kafenatid.net since I had bought that domain along with the .com one.

As for ideas, I can just recommend thinking outside the box. I know it sounds cliche, but the only thing that the squatters buy is stuff that is "normal." If you think of something outside of "normal", you'll likely find what you're looking for. Also, don't be scared of hyphens or long names. There are a lot of good hyphenated and long domain names available. If it's good enough, people will remember it.
