0 Subject: RIHC 2006-07: Draft discussion

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Wed, Oct 11, 2006, 17:43

I will activate the draft momentarily. The clock will not start until Thursday morning, and any picks tonight are strictly optional. You can, however, begin to set up a queue if you expect timing conflicts tomorrow.

We will start with an 6 hour clock, but if too much clock is being used, we may have to shorten it during the draft (though I doubt that will be necessary). The draft clock will continue through weekends. There will be a clock moratorium each night from 11pm until 7am Eastern time. Picks can continue to be made during the moratorium period, but the clock will be paused. Those picking at the endpoints do not get a double clock. In addition, if anyone is already in arrears for a pick when their next pick is due, they do not necessarily get a second clock period. This will be subject to Commissioner discretion.

The draft is configured for only G, F, and C. Our league does have single slot requirements for PG, SG, PF, and SF, but I did not think it was helpful to include those distinctions in the draft grid, since many players would be eligible at multiple slots and their designation would often be arbitrary. If you draft someone who is eligible for both GF or FC, just pick the one that you think is the best fit for your team. Again, this is only for the purposes of displaying the draft results.

Our roster configuration will be as follows:
PG, SG, G, G
PF, SF, F, F
C, C
Util, Util
3 bench
2 DL

Yahoo position eligibility will be used throughout the season. You are advised to check the Yahoo league site prior to selecting any player to ensure that you know that player's position eligibility at the start of the season.

You do not need to draft a completely valid roster.

Following the draft, all undrafted players will be placed on waivers, and waiver priorities will start out in inverse draft order.

You may draft a player who is not currently listed at Yahoo. If you do so, you will be assigned a placeholder player at Yahoo until the drafted player is made available, at which time you must pick up that player as a free agent (without using a waiver priority). After the 15 rounds of the draft are completed, you can no longer claim an unlisted player.

This league will have a limit of 84 games per position. Since there are 2 slots for each of G, F, C, and U, those position slots will be subject to a combined limit of 168 games.

Here are my ground rules for selecting from a queue: If you have a queue and make it available, and it is your turn to pick, I will make your pick if I'm around. Therefore, do not make (or leave) your queue available if you do not want it used.

You can specify that only the top name on your queue is to be displayed, or that the entire queue is to be shown. If you make the entire queue visible, I'll first check for any emails that might provide additional instructions.

Regardless, be aware that your queue is not visible to me or to any other designated picker until it is your turn to pick.

Please refrain from mentioning any undrafted player in this thread. You can use this thread to alert others about your availability, to request volunteers to accept a queue, to raise questions about draft rules or mechanics, to solicit trade offers or announce trades, etc.

After two rounds have been completed, I will start a separate thread for draft rationales. We will then try to keep the rationale thread on a 2 round delay.

Hmmmm. I tried, but was unable to hit the send trade button while upside down, so I gave up on the punishment all together. ; )

On a side note, Endy Chavez just made a ridiculous play to keep the Mets alive.

Hey everybody - I have to duck out to a lunch meeting for the next 3 hours (including travel time) and will be away from the computer. I've left a 3-player queue for Guru's use to keep things moving. This way at least the 9.11 pick can be made to move things on to FootWedge, and possibly 10.02 as well. If my queue is busted by the 10.02 pick I'll get to it ASAP when I get back. I'd also be willing to trade it while I'm away to Uptown for Damon Stoudamire or to anybody else for a player they drafted in rounds 1-7. You know, just to help out and keep things moving.

LOL at Guru's rationale for Nocioni. Wait until you see mine for the Granger pick that came two picks later. Keeping in line with posts 145 & 147 above, I just say this for now: I lost sleep over that pick! The rest of the story will have to wait.

Sorry, Uptown. I just checked in before heading off to bed and saw my turn was up. I didn't check to see what time your pick was made. I didn't want to hold up the rationales while I was off in dreamland. Now, I am off...

Uptown:
Just read your draft rationale on Granger. Don't worry, he'll get the minutes. He made huge gains throughout the season last year - as a rook - and he's headed toward mini-marion status. Granger is a very versatile player who is coachable and hard-nosed on defense, as well as developing increasing confidence in his offense (with the whole team and coaching staff behind him). Indiana is short on outside shooting this year, and with J.O. and Harrington hogging the post, guess who's going to be putting up more threes from the corner?

He can play at the SF or PF and even SG in a pinch, and with all the nonsense and injuries going on with the Pacers, which so far shows no signs of diminishing this season, he looks to see upwards of 35 m/g. Since Granger is a "Jehovah's Witness" he's pretty unlikely to take weapons and drugs to strip clubs at 3 am, which should help to keep him on the floor while others spend time in the doghouse or the courtroom.

It's higly likely he'll start at SF, as Indiana looks to go small and uptempo, with a potent front court of J.O, Harrington & Granger at the 5,4, and 3 respectively. With Tinsley pushing the break, finally unshackled from Carlisle's over-controlling ways (he's promised- and also been told from on top), the new offensive approach can only help everyone's fantasy numbers.

I took him a little early by some projections in the AAA East draft (8.02) because I watched him play all last season and I could not bear the thought of sleeping too long on him and missing out this year. Considering the state of mind you were in when selecting this pick, I'd say you're going to come out a winner here. Thought you'd want to know.

Going to be out for about 3 hours. Not sure who I want to pick, so I'm not leaving a queue. Will make my pick then (though lionprideguy probably won't pick much before me as he's on the West Coast)

Yeah, we'll see if I make it back next year. Feels like I've had a very weak draft this year. Last year I got the rotowire projections, and this year I did not. Last year, on Camby-power, until I made some lousy trades and got too busy to keep up the final month or two, I was looking to finish strong. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and energy, and a few other categories ;-)

If only I knew the other 29 teams like I know the Pacers....

I see you're still up to your tradin' ways. Sounds like you all are off to a great start for another great year of RIHC.

Thanks Pacers Rule. Good to know someone else thinks he's primed to break out. I do hope you are right about the boost in three's. That would be especially useful. He did play well last night. I still think I would have rather gone with Chandler, but I'll survive if I am proven wrong.

I'll be up for another hour or so in case my pick comes up. Otherwise, my queue will be set up for tomorrow. In regards to round 13, I will leave some guys in the queue, but probably not enough to cover the total number of picks. I simply don't have that many guys on my radar right now. If any players remain in the queue, feel free to use for round 13. If my queue runs out, I'll be able to check in around 3:30 pm or so.

A punt that would make Ray Guy proud!

I got to a point when I could have gone after a shot blocker or two, potentially picked up 1-2 points in blocks, and butchered some of my other cats. I decided that if it's hopeless, don't pay up for any shot blockers.

Footwedge, if you're needing a little fodder for your 12.01 rationale, here's my contribution:

Tinsley has created a few smiles of his own with his recent play, racking up 17 assists against three turnovers in the last two preseason games, both victories.

"It's just a different approach," Tinsley said. "In the offseason, I dedicated myself to taking care of my body, hiring a chef, lifting weights and being focused and just more dedicated."

With the shift to a faster-paced offense, Tinsley's role has become even more critical because he has his hand on the throttle, and that's been evident in the preseason. In the two games he missed, the Pacers were outscored 35-28 on fast-break points and lost both. In the four games he played, they've outscored their opponents 84-33 and gone 3-1.

"Our season is really going to depend on how well we're able to keep up with Jamaal as a team and how well he runs the show," said Jermaine O'Neal. "He's a prime-time factor. The way he has approached the game this year, the way he's worked out, his mental approach, the leadership he's bringing as a point guard has been phenomenal. He's going to set the pace for us the entire year."

After missing nearly half of the regular-season games the last three seasons with a variety of injuries, Tinsley set two primary individual goals for 2006-07: to appear in at least 80 games and keep his turnovers down.

Sounds pretty good for a twelfth round pick. Now, he just has to play the games :-o

I will plan to activate the league at Yahoo tomorrow, probably around noon. At that point, all undrafted players should be on waivers. Initial waiver proprities will be in reverse draft order. Waivers should clear some time on Saturday.

If you have players who are already eligible for an injury slot, you may pick up an additional player via waivers or free agency without dropping a player. If none of your players are injury-eligible, then you must leave your 2 injury slots empty.

The league has been activated. You can find your players listed for 10/27 or later. Undrafted players will clear waivers after 2 days. (They are all listed as 10/29, so maybe 2.5 days)

We'll continue to use this thread for discussion until all of the missing rationales are collected. After that, I'll start a regular season discussion thread.
