Subject: RIHC 2008-09: Getting started
Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Wed, Sep 17, 2008, 16:15
It’s time to begin organizing the RIHC leagues.
The RIHC managers have all been invited and have accepted (subject to one potential issue). My guidelines for succession were to give initial priority to the top 4 RIHC teams (excluding me), the teams finishing 1-2 in each AAA league, the winner of each AA league (2), and me. Those total 10 teams. Next in line would be the third place teams in the two AAA leagues. Since one league had a tie for third, this left 3 potential managers for two spots. As means to break the tie, I first considered GuruPatron status. Since two of the three were GuruPatrons, I invited them, and the other team is the first “bubble” team.
So, here is the list of the 12 RIHC managers for 2008-09: Top 5 RIHC: Mike D, Guru, Footwedge, Species, S_R Top 2 AAA1: EuroGollam, Florian Top 3 AAA2: Pacers Rule, xpdurmind, deejay (tie), weykool (tie) AA Winner: KnicksFan
first alternate: 3rd place AAA1 (Holt)
The caveat is that xpdurmind may have a work conflict that precludes him for participating. He has promised to let me know by September 28th. If he cannot participate, Holt will be offered that spot.
I expect the draft to take place during the second half of October. For the RIHC, the draft should not require more than about 8 days, so a starting date of October 15 should work out well. Prior to that, we need to consider whether any rules changes are warranted, and also go through the process of selecting our draft order.
I will open up a thread for qualifying leagues in a moment. After that, we can begin discussing potential rules changes in this thread.

I know! Guru! s R should be AFTER 'Species' in the initial alphabetization!! Easy mistake to make. Please fix it and put me 2nd :)

Sorry about the strange set of numbers. I just went to an online random number generator and thought I'd generated a random sorting of the numbers 1-12. I didn't actually review the numbers before I emailed them to Guru.

While waiting, I looked back at the results for first 5 RIHC seasons. Here is the draft order for the eventual winner each season:
2007-08: 8th (Mike D) 2006-07: 8th (Guru) 2005-06: 7th (Mike D) 2004-05: 9th (Euro) 2003-04: 3rd (Dave R)
Meanwhile, the team with the top pick has finished in 12th, 11th, 10th, 7th, and 9th.
So much for the value of drafting first!

Based on Guru's analysis I guess I should be happy I didn't end up with the first pick. And I have to make sure I draft somewhere between seventh and ninth.
Mike D May I suggest the eighth pick based on Guru's excellent analysis of previous years.

As an aside, I've been considering shifting the Invitational Leagues to a "modified snake" format.
In this format, the first two rounds would snake back and forth as usual. However, the third round would mimic the second round, and the fourth round would mimic the first. This 4-round pattern would then continue throughout the draft. Expressed another way, here is the pattern:
Round 1: 1-12 Round 2: 12-1 Round 3: 12-1 Round 4: 1-12 ...
This would mean that the team getting the top pick would also have the 24th pick, the 36th, and the 37th. It is a way to try to neutralize the advantage of getting one of the top picks.
Of course, I've seen no evidence in any of the Invitational leagues (in any sport) that drafting near the beginning of the first round has any inherent advantage. So this may be a solution for a non-problem.
In any event, I have not proposed this yet because the kafenatid.net software doesn't support it (or at least not without a lot of artificial trading of draft picks). However, this is likely to be an option next year, and if it is, I'll probably propose it for baseball.
Food for thought.

#48 This modified snake does seem, on its face, infinitely more fair- except of course for round 15. ;-) Seem may be the key word as you mentioned based on your sample. Still, I'm jazzed about the #2 pick since looking back on my last four years of RIHC and QLs I believe I've picked #8, #11, #11, and finally last year I shot up to #6. Come to think of it, however, my two (QL) wins came from the drafts with picks 8 and 6. Hmmmm. Is it too late to switch to #6?!! Just trying to help a brother out, Mike D.

Sorry for the delay. I was going back, forth, and back again about a few things. Which makes it look kinda silly that I'm taking pick 3 after all this. But I can handle the ridicule as long as I still get to pick third.

Has there ever been a snake vs modified snake test done where a league drafts players based on a completed season? What I mean is, doing a snake draft of 2007 players, then a modified snake. Just have each team draft one player for each position, then add the 2007 stats and see where each draft position finishes. This would allow you to judge draft positions based on league results while eliminating other factors such as the drafters only guessing at player values, roster moves, strategic starting/benching, etc.
How difficult would it be to set up a draft program to run a test like that? Such a program could apply it to different sports/seasons and have a large sample to look at.
One thing that makes me wonder about the modified snake draft is that it is based on the idea that the top 3 players or so are a great deal more talented than the other first rounders. Is it still more fair than a normal snake when the top few players aren't much better than the rest of the 1st rounders (does that ever happen)? I have no idea. Just some questions that come to mind.

But I can handle the ridicule as long as I still get to pick third.
And that is why I advised you in post #44 to use Florian's RNG....with four 3's your odds of getting the pick you ended up with would have been almost assured.

I'm planning to start the draft on October 15th. Based on past performance, I'd expect us to finish on Oct. 23rd.
Does that time frame work for everyone? The season begins on Oct 28, which provides ample leeway.

Starting draft on Oct.15th works for me as well.
While I prefer the current snake draft, the modified snake draft does have some appeal. If we were using a modified snake draft, I would have likely chosen to pick 7th or 8th rather than sixth.

The draft will start on Wednesday with a 6 hour clock. The draft clock will continue through weekends. There will be a clock moratorium each night from 1am until 7am Eastern time. Picks can continue to be made during the moratorium period, but the clock will be paused. Those picking at the endpoints do not get a double clock. In addition, if anyone is already in arrears for a pick when their next pick is due, they do not necessarily get a second clock period. This will be subject to Commissioner discretion.
I will plan to activate the draft on Tuesday evening. Although the draft does not officially begin until Wednesday, the early activation will allow anyone a chance to set a queue in advance, if desired.

Guru, this weekend is going to be very, very difficult for me. The roster freeze times are 6am - 12pm here in the UK, and that combined with the 6 hour slots is going to make things very awkward for me.
There is a chance i might have zero internet access from Friday 7pm GMT until Sunday 10pm GMT. I don't really want to be leaving gargantuan queues for my crucial middle round picks.
Is there any way we can extend the clock to 8 hours, even if it's just during this weekend? That would make a huge difference to me.
Sorry for causing inconvenience - i know i picked the wrong weekend to be out of town :P Everything should be fine again when i get back on Sunday night.
