0 Subject: How far back is too far

This is my first year to play ultimate hoops and I am currently have one team in the top 10 and one in the top 60. I doubt I will stay there very long. I noticed that there is about a 600 point difference between 1 and 500th WWR. I know it is early and it is a long season but from those that have played in the past what are a reasonable amount of points to be able to make up over the rest of the season. I mean if you are currently WWR 1000 do you have any shot at #1? It looks to me like BJ21 would have to royally screw up to drop out of the top 100. Again, I am new and I was just curious. Maybe you vets can give some examples in the past of how you or others have come fom behind and how far you have come. Thanks!

It's extremely hard to move up in this game because most teams have alot of the same players. I'm at 450 right now and I have pretty much given up on winning the top prize. In order to move up your going to have to get lucky with some player pickups that are different from the most popular. If you get some DNP's from the popular holds when you don't have them, you can make up ground. Let's face it, everybody in the top 500 knows who the good players are with the good schedules so that's what makes it difficult.

The ability to make up ground comes from three sources:

1. Efficient trading (from a schedule & points standpoint
2. Injury avoidance
3. Value advantage

The first two factors are important throughout the season. The latter tends to build as the season progresses.

In the standings forums, I generally keep monthly versions of the prior year rankings so you can make year to year comparisons. You might want to compare the December 1 (2001) rankings vs. the season ending rankings. Note that as of 12/1, Dave R. was ranked 225, yet he ultimately won. So there's plenty of time to gain ground - or to lose it!

I should also mention that I was ranked #311 at the beginning of December last year, and ended up ranked #17.

So while PGunn is correct that we all seem to have similar rosters, I don't think this season is any different in that respect vs. last season, when many teams had guys like Tinsley, Gasol, B. Barry, etc. Evidently, there were still plenty of opportunities to differentiate.

What impressed me in this year rankings are:
- the great dominance of managers with multiple teams
- the gurupies dominance
- in most (if not all) cases managers with multiple teams are gurupies
That said, who have multiple teams of course have biggers shots to keep position until the end

Well, once in band camp I was the five hundredth marcher and ended up in the top 50 marchers.:)

Just joking! Great info! Makes me feel alittle better having 3 teams in the 250-380 range!
Not plan on winning it all, just my Division that would be great.
And at work we all throw in $10 bucks every month for who score the most pts for that month,
so that is also important! But over all this is just a blast!
Wish i wouldnt spend so much time at it though.
Could be CEO at work if I didnt spend half the day looking at STATS & SCHE.
But its more fun winning $60 from friends then working hard!

Great information Guru. I appreciate it. What will burn me in the end is that I have had to use my trades to stay in the top 10 (Currently #5). I am afraid that if I drop out of the top 100 I will lose interest. Now I know that if I do drop there is still hope. My division is not that competitive.

Sometimes it's important to recognize that there is no reward for being in the top 10 today. In fact, you might have a more efficient use for a saved trade next March, when you have a bigger bankroll to exploit.

not to mention how river has to feel free from his frustrations with fantasy basket.
it's just december and his favourite soccer team is almost out from every kind of run.
I haven't had the sufficient time to follow my fb team because i've had to follow my soccer team almost everywhere, missing a lot of trades, something he doesn't know the meaning of.
River, take it easy and sing with me:
aaaaarrivederci, romaaaaa
hello, goodbye.......

Lazio, you have any Italian Soccer bets that I might be able to get in on? For today or tommorrow? I need something that pays big like +1000 or more. Type it in here if you have anything.

ok, here are some indications:
milan over roma: 1,85
perugia over piacenza: 1,80
parma over reggina: 1,50
if you bet 10 bucks you win 50.
there are a bunch of difficult games to read this week, and maybe it isn't the right week to put money on serie A.

Lazio, do you have Halftime/Fulltime prediction for any of those games? And when are these games being played? Saturday?

Clach, what do you think about AS Rome winning the first half and AC Milan winning the game. That bet pays +2400.

PGunn...Just noticing how similiar my ranking last year at this time was to yours...I was at 447. I made it up to 12th or something before finishing 20th.
Senator Urinewas at 806 and finished at 13th
Tosh was at 664 and finished at 15th
(Unless they changed their team in the standings)
But...there's plenty of time.

KyCat, I haven't completely given up but it's not looking good. I 'm trying to figure out how I let myself get so far behind. Think I should have monitored my position compared to the leaders better. I'm going to start making some riskier moves to see if I can get back into it. We'll see what happens.

I am at 112 right now, and keep dropping in and out of the top 100. But I started out horribly..a week or so in the season i was at 1000. But I made some lucky moves that paid off.

I was briefly top 100 last week, but have had 4 DNPs in the last week (Baron, Kukoc, TMac and Gooden) which has cost me all my banked trades and a stack of points and money. Not giving up, but interest level has certainly taken a nosedive.

BUTT

What do you think : how far back is too far now? Just curious. I'd say Top 150 would approximately be the extrem limit right now for still having hopes to win it all, and top 100 would be more realistic. I'm talking about winning the whole thing, not finishing top 10.

I'd like to hear some inputs on this.

JCs, I think it's time for you and other guys who have multiple teams, start to differentiate rosters, because every time I look at top managers standing, it's scaring see these armada.
It's like when you playing Risiko: you attack with 3, I defend with 1, how can I resist?

A serious thought:
how much do you rate a trade? I think a correct use of trade is 45-50 points (stud average).
This is necessary to project the virtual standings: for instance Jcs you have 6 trades more and 300points less than me, so we are virtually tied.
Of course I'm making things easyer, because a correct analisys must include actual roster (averages of player you have and when you have to sell), franchise value, etc.

clach - this is meant in no way to disrespect you my brother, but because of the strategy and skill involved in these salary cap, daily transaction games, and how long-term they are, i look at them as...say, Chess, or Risk, or even perhaps Monopoly - a game that is usually not finished in 5 minutes - one that go on and on with leaders changing daily until the game finally ends.

i think trying to determine "virtual" standings is a fruitless effort, for those reasons.

peace,
Tree

Tree,
I agree with you. Infact I wrote "I'm making things (quite) easier".
Btw, I tried to find, just to have an idea, gurupies standing for exactly 1 year ago, but I couldn't
Maybe Guru can help

Clach - I would agree - for a rough estimate, I usually think of a trade as worth 45 or so points. The standings from last year 1st of February are here - found on "page 12" of the standings. I go there often to relive the glory days (just kidding). Nice job on your latest run. Good luck!

Tree - About daily leader changes, it depends on the year. Two years ago Monuments took a wide lead very early and never relinquished it. Last year, it was more evened out, even if Blackjackis21 had quite a firm lead for the last several months until the very last days.

OH MAN! Unbelievable how bad i'm doing this year compared to last at this time. Thanks for the link. TRV and WWR are both down and I only finished 35 spots higher then where I was in the end, ugh

It's impressive how Dave R come 367p from behind, having 1 trade less than you blackjackis21

Another fantastic final run is from Senatore urine: from 217 with only 2 trades to 13wwr

And if someone is still not sold the season has just began:
on february 1st Mist was 13wwr.
Everybody know it was just a lucky combination :-)

i suppose, my perspective comes from someone who really doesn't have huge designs on winning the whole thing - over the years, the goals i've set for myself in the SW/TSN games have been higher and higher, and i usually like to finish in the top 1 percent, as opposed to number one overall.

right now, i've got 2 teams in the top 1000 (my top squad is around 400 now - i have yet to break 300, but i anticipate it), and a third about to break in - and that's my immediate goal - having all 3 in the top 1000, and having one of them win the division prize.

so, when i say "daily changes", i suppose that's what i mean. not necessarily (sp?) in the upper stratosphere, but more so at the level of very skilled players...

does that make sense?
