I've released the 2001 Market Madness Contest site. The URL is http://rotoguru1.com/madness/. Note that this is on a different server than last year's contest, so if you have the old site bookmarked, you should update it.

There are probably a few glitches in the site, although most of the programs are a carryover from last year's game. Prior to formally announcing the game, I'd like to have a few of you poke around to make sure it seems to be operating properly.

For now, the only thing you can do of lasting value is register. However, you can "practice" all other site functions using last year's teams and brackets. Of particular interest may be the scoring simulator, which allows you to enter your set of assumed picks, and then tabulates the resulting scores for all units. This could be of great help in formulating your actual picks. Once the 2001 brackets are announced, this simulator will be updated with the new teams and prices.

There are very few changes from last year's contest. Other than reduced prize values, the most notable is the inclusion of a prize for the best score excluding the returns on basket units. Effectively, this means there are two overlapping contests - one which is the same as last year's, and one in which the returns for basket units are zeroed out. For those "purists" who think that the inclusion of basket units added too much of an element of luck, the "basket-free" version should be more to their liking.

I think i've finally figured out all those rules and stuff. now i'm just wondering what was the best possible score from last year's tournament?

I've managed to get my Guru money up to 1500.

I noticed the teams have been entered and dollar values have been assigned. Are you still tweeking these, GURU? I have not played this game before, but I was not expecting the dollar values to be the same in each region. I thought there was a formula you used to determine the dollar values of each team, and it can't be a coincidence that all the #1 seeds were $20, all the #2's were $14, etc., could it?

I decided to value each region the same this year. There doesn't seem to be a dominant #1 seed (like Mich. St. in 2000, or Duke in 1999), nor are there teams with severe injury problems (like Cincy last year, when Kenyon Martin was lost). Thus, I couldn't see any obvious places to differentiate across the various regions.

So, the prices are now final, and you can begin making selections.

Guru, I'm still getting last year's teams at the simulator... You may be working on this now or already know, but I thought I'd let you know here just in case.

Also, the likes of UCLA, Stanford, USC, Iowa St, Kansas, Arizona and such already have scores (Payts.)

If you are still getting last year's teams in the simulator, your browser is probably pulling the page from your cache, rather than the server.

Right click on the stale page with your mouse, and then select reload or refresh.

Do I buy and sell after each round or are these picks for the whole tourney? Can I sell 10 shorts plus more basket units and whatever the other units were or is it 10 total? Server seems to be running slow or my ISP is not sure which, so I am having trouble getting to the rules.

I am still a bit confused...

Can someone gimme a hand here, with an example...

I think Florida will do well- that means I want buy long on them, right?

And if I think Kentuky will lose 2nd round, I go short?

No trading after the tournament starts.

Short 10 units total.

You want to buy (go long) the teams that you think will do better than their seeding implies. As a #3 seed, Florida is expected to make it to the Sweet 16, and then lose. If you think they will survive to the Elite 8, then they are a good long. If you think they will make it to the Final Four, then they are a great long.

And if you think Kentucky (a #2 seed) drops in round 2, then they are a good team to short.

ok, let me try to explain.

let's take florida for example. Florida is a 3 seed. being a 3 seed, that means that they should reach the sweet 16 and lose. if you think that they will go past the sweet 16 then it might be a good idea to go long on them. likewise all 1 and 2 seeds are assumed to make the elite 8. and all 1 seeds are assumed to reach teh final 4. if you think that say Illinois won't make it to the final 4 then it's a good idea to short them.

in short (no pun intended), you want to go short on the teams that will overachieve (based on their seed) and go long on the teams that will underachieve (based on their seed).

hope that helped you out a little, good luck.

I like Iowa. I think with Recker coming back, they will beat Creighton, and I like them over Kentucky.

Its the NCAA Baby, anything can happen...
