NY Post TIM RUSSERT DIES FROM APPARENT HEART ATTACK
By CHARLES HURT
June 13, 2008 --
Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of "Meet the Press," has died after collapsing at NBC's Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old.
Russert, who rose from the inside world of politics where he was former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo's press secretary and one-time chief of staff to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights.
THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY. PLEASE REFRESH FOR UPDATES. The rumor hit our newsroom about an hour ago. MSNBC hasn't reported it yet. Sad day. We've lost one of our greatest Washington journalists today. |

WOW! Utterly unexpected from here at any rate.
What a loss to broadcasting. FWIW, my sincerest condolences to family, friends and any who knew him.

He was easily my favorite Washington reporter. Either he had the memory of an elephant, or he commanded the best staff in journalism as he would lampoon politicians by showing them their own quotes with regularity. I am sitting here in stunned silence, a really, really sad day.

Wow, what a shocker and reminder as to how vulnerable we all are. Also, my sincerest condolences to family and friends.

His whiteboard action during the 2000 election was hysterical. I really don't like the Sunday morning pundits so I don't watch them with much regularity, but when I saw him on the PM shows he was usually good especially around election time.

Reminds me of the time early in my adult life when my invaluable and irreplacable accountant died right around April 15.
I gave Russert major kudos for airing Jaunita Broaddrick when no one else had the cajones. Tho he did lose his nerve soon thereafter. Perhaps not even Superman could have survived in the MSM who kept down that path so I kinda forgave him halfway for folding under pressure. MSNBC's Cynthia Alksne actually lost her co-host job on "Equal Time" apparently simply because she publicly stated she believed Broaddrick so I suspect only a Russert could have even taken the story onto an MSM TV broadcast.
That is my benchmark of what a large figure he was in the MSM.
My take on him is that he somewhat more resembled the higher character of Daniel Moynahan than Cuomo, both former bosses. Chris Matthews who worked under Tip O'Neil...not so much.
From my POV we got more than we could have hoped for from this former Dem party operative. Perhaps Stephanopolis will similarly rise above waters such as that.
Only four years younger, it feels like it hits too close to home, all the more reason not to get worked up this election cycle.
