What do you think will be the decisive factor and what evidence do you have for listing something as a decisive factor in this race.

To start off I present something from a source I am loathe to quote but I have to admit, he really has something here...

It's the wierdness, stupid. - David Brooks

[yes, my tagline for this comes from Bill Clinton's' correctly nailing the decisive factor in his first race]

Then there is Obama's own take [according to ABC's Jake Tapper - B[I don't recall these were BHO's words but I doubt Tapper would make it up]]...

Not the daily tracking poll, the actual Gallup poll, has Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., pulling ahead of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

The numbers among registered voters are 50 percent to 46 percent -- and 54 percent to 44 percent among likely voters.

Obama's campaign always said before the American people made their final decision about him, the Democrat would be judged on three things -- the VP pick, the convention, and the debates. Now, two of the three have gone down, and the American people have liked McCain's stuff better.

I'm not saying it will work, but curiously McCain has pulled an unlikely u-turn. Especially since the backlash to the media attack on Palin, McCain has actually started to attack the media that used to be pimping for him among republicans.

It would be interesting if he, of all people, could make 'media fairness' the central issue of this campaign. I guess there is no chance that would resonate with the 'other half' of the electorate tho.

Nevermind.

If I can take a different approach. Rather then what "will be" the decisive factor, "what should be" the decisive factor.

This is the American Electorate after all so my hopes aren't high...

An enthusiastic and well articulated position outlining a plan for an all out attack on the energy problem including a massive investment first and foremost in nuclear power followed by drilling and to a lesser extent wind and solar which still do not promise to be a big part of any real solution.

This should be on par with Kennedy's vow to go to the moon and it's far more important to our national future.

This one project could hold the keys to our economic future and survivability. It's a the root of a lot of the economic problems facing the country (Second currently only to the housing problems) and will only become a greater part of the problem as we move into the future.

I remember when the light finally went on for McCain, he realized the 'drill now' lobbyists were winning a lotta converts, and McCain flip-flopped on his previously un-friendly energy development stance...

He came out with strong Kennedy-esque words belied by his past stances.

I just don't remember it giving him any bounce. Maybe Obama jumped on the bandwagon at about the same time and the effect cancelled each other out. Interesting campaign issue that someone might want to investigate the timeline/effect and both candidates exact current position statement.

Actual Mavericks

Any Nader sightings?

Before Palin I would have bet McCain was so unappealing that Barr would siphon off 4-5% and Ron Paul another 1% of the votes.

Anyone watching the "Candidates forum on Service" live from
Columbia University (up the road from me) tonight...? Good stuff.
Almost over. Both candidates were classy and respectful to each
other. They spoke separately, were hit with good questions about
public service and did have some opportunities to contrast their
platforms. Not a debate, and the candidates were not speaking
together, but a good and rare opportunity to see them speaking in
the same place for the first time.
