might as well...

fantasy magazines are starting to come out. let's get a hot stove league going? i'm itching to trade! lol

probably before doing that though, we should replace the managers who said they wouldn't be coming back.

here are those who confirmed they would be. hopefully, the status hasn't changed:
1. SZ
2. Baldwin (presuming Obama hasn't come for him)
3. PD
4. me
5. bili
6. MBJ ("in for now" were his words)
7. NC
8. PV
9. Tax
10. Coldwater Coyotes
11. AF
12. Punk

not coming back - although if either changed their mind, i think they'd be welcomed back into the league with open arms:

1. MITH
2. Wiggs

so, i think we need to find out:
a. if the group of 12 returnees are still planning on returning.

b. if the group of 2 non-returnees are still planning on NOT returning.

then, if necessary, we need to move to email and discuss replacements if either or both of MITH and Wiggs leave.

It will be interesting and I am working an all nighter tonight installing Ralph Lauren windows. Full internet access and my night is your day so the stat tracker will be working over time.

I really F'd up i the Gurukeeper league. I am barely in first place. I set up my final day with 5 starters. Verlander, Danks, Pinero, Hudson and Romero.

I went over innings by 1.5 innings so none of those starts will count. I forgot when you see the innings left it doesn't include the day before.

It's 2:32 PM eastern time. My batters are doing better then Tree, and my pitchers are doing much better, yet he is up by .05 and I am down by .05, must be that one stat but I have no clue which one since I am ahead i all.

Only category he is ahead in is avg. 375 to .333

Tree's WHIP went down a notch because some guy for the Nats is pitching well. WTF? When he blows up, he'll go back to 1.23 and you can catch him in ERA.

Karstens is gone. Things looking bleak.

Stattracker didn't get the memo. Building 7 and Baldwin had reached the Max Innings Pitched, so all the stats they are "gathering" today will not count, yet the Stattracker is doing just that. I passed B7 in K's today, so I have another point, making me only .5 behind Tree.

Man, I need a Brain Wilson save. Perhaps he has 19 srikeouts in him, as well.

Thanks guys. more than any other league, THIS is the one i enjoy the most, and this is the one i wanted to win most.

the last 4 years have been frustrating. two second places and two thirds, but never the grand prize.

i still remember joining this league when i took over a fairly crappy team. immediately, i shook things up by trading Jeff Kent for Carl Crawford and Luis Castillo, immediately drawing scorn and proclamations that i was going to do a fantastic job of keeping my newly adopted team in the cellar of the league.

i finished 10th that first season, but it was an improvement over what that squad did in the season before i took over, and i firmly believe that acquisition of Carl Crawford played a large role in the success of later teams.

There's obviously been tremendous turnover from that first team, but Mark Teixeira and Francisco Rodriquez have remained on my squad. Also, Kaz Matsui - a late season addition this year - was on that first team and gets to enjoy drinking some Shiner Bock from the Championship cup.

it's actually kind of funny to look back at that first team, which did include such all-stars as Shawn Green, but also a slew of other players that were basically one hit wonders or who i don't even remember (Keith Ginter and his 19 HRs, Craig Monroe and his 18 homers, Scott Rolen's incredible 109-34-124-.314 line, and Brad Wilkenson's 32 homer season. Not to mention CC Sabathia and Josh Beckett, who *combined* for exactly 20 wins).

shortly i'll add the reply i mentioned back in post 526, but i didn't want to add more clutter to this one.

again, thanks for the congratulations.

referring back to Post 525 from NC. i had written out a response, but decided not to post it, because i didn't want to jinx myself. i'm now going to post it, as it was written then -

NC: Umm I'm trying to figure out what took him so long. Look at his keepers

Albert Pujols (StL - 1B)
José Reyes (NYM - SS)
Mark Teixeira (NYY - 1B)
David Wright (NYM - 3B)
Tim Lincecum (SF - SP)
Jonathan Papelbon (Bos - RP)
Francisco Rodríguez (NYM - RP)

I mean why would this team not lead start to finish?

Yeah I know Reyes hurt but my keeper Carlos Quentin was out more then half the year.

What took so long?

I've said all year Tree has to win this, and picking up 2 quality closers for a draft pick at the trade dead line pretty much sealed the deal.

my response as i wrote it then:
Reyes was hurt, and come on, comparing him to Carlos Quintin? sheesh. Reyes had an ADP of like 25 spots higher.

Wright also missed a stretch of the season, and his power numbers are down significantly. honestly, if it wasn't for his 25 SBs, he'd be a questionable keeper at this point.

i also went through a plethora of 2Bs and SSs before finding one that worked: Kendrick, Teahen (who never gained the eligibility), Lopez, Castillo, Callaspo, Peralta, Ryan, and Cabrera.

same thing with my catching. it sucked for a long time.

*IF* i win this thing, and it's still a big if, it's because of my waiver wire pick ups, not because of my keepers.

Guys like Montero, Prado, Scutaro, Escobar, Coghlan, and especially Rajai Davis are the guys that carried this team when i needed them to. i mean, if you look at Davis' numbers, he has some serious keeper potential.

and yes, that trade for two closers was key as well. it allowed me to close a gap that was large.

my addendum to all that:
i won't lie. having MVP candidates like Teixeira and Pujols sure doesn't hurt. Having a Cy Young candidate in Lincecum also doesn't hurt. and Papelbon was a stud in the pen with his ratios.

but my other 3 keepers? Reyes was out most of the year, Wright dramatically underperformed, and compared to season's past, K-Rod was borderline terrible.

looking back, my draft was actually pretty awful. the one saving grade was drafting a guy like Wainwright IN THE 12TH ROUND, as he was a steal. an absolute steal, and has to be looked as one of the steals of the draft.

BUT EVERY OTHER PLAYER I DRAFTED was not on my team at the end of the season. sure, Johnny Damon and Jermaine Dye were solid for my team most of the season, and then i needed to cut them loose when i needed some other stats they couldn't provide, but man, my draft looks like a who's who of failures and waiver wire fodder - aside from the aforementioned Wainwright, Damon, and Dye, the rest of my draft was:

10. (130) Ricky Nolasco SP
11. (151) Johnny Damon OF
13. (179) Howie Kendrick 2B
14. (186) Hank Blalock 1B,3B
15. (207) Ubaldo Jiménez SP
16. (214) Xavier Nady OF
17. (235) Johnny Cueto SP
18. (242) Carlos Gómez OF
19. (263) Jose Arredondo RP
20. (270) Jonathan Sánchez SP
21. (291) Kevin Frandsen 2B,SS

oof. a couple of those guys played roles in trades, most mostly, wow, what an awful draft.

i still maintain it was the free agent pick ups i made that won this for me. these were the guys who filled in the gaps and picked up the slack, and made up ground in categories where i needed the points, late in the season.

all the pick ups i mentioned above, plus Chris Davis. Ironically, i almost kept Chris Davis, and if i had, i almost certainly would not have won. but he ended up back on my roster late in the season, hitting 5 dingers and knocking in 23 runs.

anyway, more longwindedness from me. i appreciate the well wishes. this is a very competitive league, so it's super exciting to win. thank you much.

Clearly tree's trades with me were holding him back, until this season when he barely overcame being repeatedly taken to the cleaners by the Perm Dude.

I have no excuse for my finish, except to point out that my two pitching keepers were Fausto Carmona and Daisuke Matsuzaka. Enough said.

I almost always am in the same situation as Tree; crappy draft and relying on FAs and keepers. I guess I need to prepare better. Dunno.

If I had gotten lucky with either Greinke or Franklin, both of whom I agonized over, I would have probably had much better pitching ratios, which I destroyed chasing FA starters and closers, and had much better chance of competing. Even though two of my keepers had career-worst years - Martin and Vlad, my bats actually did fine. Thanks to Lee and my mashing Brewers. I did struggle to fill 3B, and never really got an above average replacement player for that spot.

You were right to be worried about second base...

I'm teasing you, Nerve. You had the best draft by far, but I still don't think Cano was a good pick. You did much, much better with Hill, Mark Reynolds, Greike, and Verlander, just off the top of my head.

i apologize for that, NC. i have to admit that concentrating on winning this league, and going for third place in another league that netted me money if i finished in the top 3, i neglected paying a ton of attention in the other leagues i was in, once i was out of the running.

i agree.

looking back at the top 3 finishers each season, at least for where my Fantasy Profile has the data:

2001 -
1st - Baldwin
2nd (three-way tie!) - MadCity Maniacs (Madman?), Smokin' Groovies (?), and Seattle Zen

2002 - NO DATA

2003 -
1st - Toral
2nd - Bili
3rd - Cobra Verde (i know who this is, but can't remember)

2004 -
1st - Rockafellerskank
2nd - Bili
3rd - MITH

2005 -
1st - Toral
2nd - MITH
3rd - Tree

2006 -
1st - MBJ
2nd - Tree
3rd - NerveClinic

2007 -
1st - Bili
2nd - Seattle Zen
3rd - Tree

2008 -
1st - Bili
2nd - Tree
3rd - Taxman

2009 -
1st - Tree
2nd - Seattle Zen
3rd - NerveClinic

if anyone has the standings for 2002 - and someone who in the league then probably does(?) - we could complete that list.

i think that also makes next season the 10th anniversary of this league. not too shabby...

That's the truth. Back in 2001, when GW Bush had net positive public opinion numbers, roto baseball lived in a free market utopia. Ronald Reagan would have been proud, if sentient. In fact, it was a 5X5, but one of the batting categories was - Strong Christian Values.

But the Liberals would have none of it and stacked the league with godless heathens and their apologists (I'm looking at PD, the "Perm" stands for Permissive). Take God out of baseball, put the godless Politics in the league name, and God's Kingdom inheritors are in trouble.

when i drafted him, i had hopes this would be the season he broke in and came through - planned on calling him up and using him as soon as he got settled onto a MLB roster.

Yeah, I remember they had some kind of outfield logo with his number on it, and the first day the Yankees came to play there not long after I remember seeing one of the Yankees trot out there before the game, pause in front for a sec, then tap the logo and job back to the dugout.

I can't for the life of me remember who it was, but it was a real classy thing to do.
