What possibly has made her weird mind think like this.
A complete embarrassment to Americans

Only on the two left coasts do they care at all about soccer

I don't care about soccer, but they do in Salt Lake City.

One probably should look at where MLS has teams and if they're successful before making any real determinations. For instance, if you look at the top television markets by metro area, all cities in the top 10 have teams, and 7 of the 10 are in the ESPN map. Houston, Dallas/Ft Worth and Chicago are the exceptions.

In markets 11-40, 7 have teams, and 3( Seattle, Kansas City and Columbus ) are on the map. There are 9 markets in the top 40 without teams that are represented in ESPN's top 25. The others are Vegas(#42), Norfolk(#43), Jacksonville(#47), Providence(#52) and Dayton(#64).

So, all but two on the ESPN map are in top 50 TV markets.

These numbers fare favorably with game 2 of the NHL Stanley Cup between the top 2 TV markets in the country, New York and LA on NBC.

The top five markets for last Stanley Cup Final Game 2 were: Los Angeles, 12.4; New York, 10.4; Buffalo, 9.2; Boston, 6.3; Minneapolis-St. Paul, 6.3. link

Now that the US team has advanced to the knockout round, I would expect the TV ratings for US vs Belgium to be considerably higher. But in NY, US vs Ghana in soccer already beat NY vs LA in hockey by 12.5 - 10.4.

Wouldn't the fact that there aren't a lot of people in those midwest states to begin with hinder a large rating? I'd like to see a per capita rating if it existed... like 30% of tv's in a particular market were watching.

I know at my job they've been showing all the World Cup matches on our tv's instead of the financial channels because employees across the country in all of our offices were streaming it anyway and crashing the servers. For the Germany game they blocked out conference rooms to air the game and ordered pizza for everyone and it was packed in there from the little old lady secretary to the boss to the mail room guy.

This 5/5/08 write-up in the Bleacher Report is so much in agreement with Ann that I actually wonder if it wasn't her inspiration for her piece.
Apparently it’s soccer season in the United States of America.

Unbeknownst to most Americans, the MLS is in full swing, already six weeks into the season. The mere fact that there is professional soccer in the U.S. might come as a surprise to you, but I assure you, it does exist.

Like the majority of Americans, I can only be bothered to care about soccer every four years, when the World Cup rolls around. Even then, the only reason for watching is the hope that our C-Team athletes can beat a country that actually cares about the sport.

With that being said, we have to wonder; why soccer isn’t popular in this country? Why is it that every child begins his sporting career with soccer, only to pursue a different sport as soon as he or she can? How can the most popular sport in the world be relegated to the same fanfare as bass fishing and bowling in our country?
I disagree. Bass fishing is FAAAAAR more popular here.

Only on the two left coasts do they care at all about soccer

what are those numbers indicating? households watching the game?

do people still use that as an indicator? it's 2014, people use their DVRs these days.

additionally, i'm doubtful if that chart takes into account the HUGE numbers at bars watching the game - which is how soccer should be watched, with large groups of people.

i sat in a bar with 100s of people crowded around two TVs for each of the two final first round games. there were images from all over the country of those scenarios repeating themselves.

and it is impossible not to laugh - and i mean laugh out loud - at a chart that leaves out Texas completely. in the state with the second largest hispanic population in the country, no one is watching soccer?

my ass.

(and reading an article that discusses "C" team athletes is something else that makes one laugh out lout. We've got a C level (well, techincally 4th tier) professional soccer team here in Fort Worth. it's great fun to watch, but nowhere are these guys even in the same universe as the MNT players.

although it's a couple years old, here's an article explaining the popularity of soccer.

Upon Chile's final shot bouncing harmlessly off the goal post, my 7 year old, who I'm pretty sure doesn't know what planet Chile is on, much less what continent, began screaming, and crying real tears.

He then threatened to kill all the Brazilians as well as the ref (who probably was a bit more on Chile's side than Brazil, if I'm being honest)... when he gets old enough.

If he read this thread, he'd probably threaten kill this nasty old stinky, hateful hag too. Fortunately for Ann, he usually spends his time more fruitfully than reading mean-spirited crap exclusively written to give wrinkly old conservative tea-baggers semis.

Soccer has arrived in the US.

Looking at the map above, the highest rating wasn't on either coast, unless Columbus OH, is one a coast.

The town where I work is closing Main St on Tuesday to have a viewing party for the US game.

I'm sure that Boldwin considers Chicago a "coast" town, but my wife and son went to a Cubs game last Sunday, the trains were packed with people going to Grant park to watch the US/Portugal game.

it's not a political issue. Baldwin likes to look foolish.

he's also the kind of person who hates when other people have fun, so he tries to pee on their parade.

this is been a fun world cup run. watching in crowded bars with friends new and old, watching all the outdoor watching parties, all of that has been a blast.

Baldwin can claim whatever nonsense he wants to support his hatred. he'll always be wrong.

The poll in 165 seems to contradict a PEW research poll from January. Poll Results

In that poll the Super Bowl was barely ahead of the mid-term elections. And both were behind the Olympics, with the World Cup way behind all 3.

That being said, I think that comparing serious domestic issues to a 2nd tier (in the US) sporting event doesn't make much sense. Especially when you frame it in the context of "what do you care about".

Pointing out the exceptions doesn't make your point. I am sure the WC is a hit in Islamo-Dearborn Michigan. I live near a nearly 100% migrant town. I am sure it's on in the bar TV's there. So what? Oh yeah. You guys are importing a whole other soccer loving country.

I can't speak for all Midwestern Cities, but Chicago had a viewing party in Grant park. Indianapolis had two, one at Chatham Tap (See Indy Star article) and one just north of town. Fairly large crowds at each.

The town I lived in had one downtown. My wife and son went for the first half (he had to leave for baseball practice). Several of his friends were there and had a great time. Are those exceptions? Maybe, but I'm curious to see how popular soccer stays compared to football as my son gets older. I would let him play either, but he prefers soccer. But, there are plenty of parents that won't let their kids play football.

Pointing out the exceptions doesn't make your point.

everyone here knows you refuse to do research because you'll find too much that refutes your point.

The U.S.-Portugal game drew 24.7 million television viewers overall, and the 18.22 million who watched on ESPN were the most the network has ever attracted for an event not involving American football.

Grant Park, Coastal Chicago, USA

Palladium Theater, coastal San Antonio, USA

Coastal Detroit, USA

i didn't bother with NY and Cali. those are givens. but a simple google search will show 100s of images from all over this country of millions of Americans loving soccer, not hating it.

(wow, that Detroit pic is huge. can a mod shrink it?)

ACC COULTER FINALLY PISSED OFF CONSERVATIVES

Queue the outrage – mostly from Christian conservatives.

“Something is deeply wrong with that woman.” – Rod Dreher, The American Conservative. Dreher also included a bunch of comments from readers who had had enough of Coulter.

PJ Tatler says – Coulter’s column makes me wonder whether she really believes in God or not, or if her God is actually a country and not a supreme being. That would be idolatry, of course.

The Christian missionary call crosses borders, and is as old as Christianity itself. It’s Christianity 101.

The Daily Caller called her writing, “horsecrap.”

Ok, so finally Ann Coulter has made a mistake that will haunt her the rest of her public life.

She's still right on immigration and on it's rightful priority. So she's right in her priorities.

She's still the best and funniest slasher and burner in the public arena.

She'll just have to walk with this gum on her shoe the rest of her public life.

She's been pretty shaky on picking Republican nominees for a few years too...but watchagonna do. No one's perfect.

Even when she's wrong, she's right in principle.

Christie did have the right attitude vis-a-vis public unions...ahead of her time. Right on the money. Wrong on the candidate.

Immigration is the existential issue of western civilization today. She and Trump are standing on the mountain first. Even if Trump isn't the best messenger.

The Jews have a penchant for self-inflicted wounds a zillion times worse than Ann's. Sorry. It's the truth. She didn't say it right. It's an unfortunate truth that limps along connected to the third rail.

Sorry Ann. Even in my heedless brave-with-the-counterintuitive-unpopular-truths world...you don't ever say ....ing Jews. Twitter 140 character limitations not withstanding. I was in a hurry and spoke off the cuff, not withstanding.
