500 Million

Is anyone else a little bit concerned that the people who are in charge of trillions of taxpayer dollars are mathematically challenged?
Of course all of the left wingers who frequent these boards will make excuses for her but immagine the hysteria that would have ensued if Bush, Chenney or other prominant Republican had made such a statement.
They would have been declared unfit to hold public office.

Dr "Evil Pelosi":
"Here's the plan. We get the warhead and we hold the world ransom for... ONE MILLION DOLLARS"!

I'll give weykool the undeserved benefit of doubt here and assume he's only feigning concern and doesn't really believe Pelosi wanted anyone to believe that figure or that she really doesn't know the difference between 'million' and 'thousand'.

but immagine the hysteria that would have ensued if Bush, Chenney or other prominant Republican had made such a statement.

So put up, tough guy. 8 years of GWB in the 24 hour news cycle yieldsd more Presidential verbal foibles than any other administration in history. And there has been shortage real doosies. Show us some examples of hysteria resulting from a simple verbal mistake. I'm sure that if you bothered to look you'd find plenty of ridicule and an occasional moronic statements similar to the subject field of this thread by some silly weykool-equivolent on the left, but mass hysteria? No. Mostly just jokes by late night comedians.

weykool, I have two very sincere suggestions for you: 1. pick your battles. 2. do some research.

If Baldwin is right about anything it's that there aren't enough quality posters on the right here. But you're not going to get a pass for simply regurgitating the GOP talking points. B will complain that righty posters here are run off by the leftist mob and in fact he would probably point out our last exchange as an example. In reality my reactions to your posts are no different from the treatment I got from B when I was new here. In fact if anything I'm much easier on you in comparison, considering comments he'd make about me being his "whipping boy" and similar insults.

The problem, as I see it, is that this isn't an issue, much less one deserving of a separate thread.

And it further exposes a problem with the right, that they seem more concerned with irrelevance than focusing on issues, and there are a myriad of serious issues currently facing the country.

I don't have a problem with isolating Nancy Pelosi as a figure worthy of serious examination. San Francisco is a beautiful city and a fun place to visit, but it also represents the most radically liberal city in the country. Pelosi is a legitimate target in that sense, representing a fringe mentality that doesn't play well outside urban meccas.
But gaffes no more define her than they do Sarah Palin.

There's a one trillion dollar stimulus/spending bill before Congress.

The Russians just pressured Kyrgyzstan to close our base there, which is vital to our supply efforts in Afghanistan.

These are issues ripe for discussion with meaningful contributions from right, left and center.

Instead, I fear another thread dedicated to negative soundbites with little substance or concentration on the monumental hurdles we all face.

I've heard the actual statement in question. We'd be more willing to give her a pass if Quayle's equally innocuous gaffe had been treated the way it should have been treated. After plenty of that treatment, you can't expect to get let off the hook when your side is on the receiving end.

If you look a little closer at Weykool's argument you might see that there is more to it, Mith.

Remember when for example the homeless advocates couldn't help but feed us phony numbers to boost their case? Or when Algore feeds us phony numbers to boost his case? Or when anti-nuke nutcases tell us one atom of loose plutonium can kill us?

Can you honestly say that the impetus to her gaffe was entirely free from that impulse?

Gawd yes.

You gotta be kidding me. More people unemployed than exist?
!? Yeah, she was just trying to feed you bogus numbers. Ge'ez.

Um

I'm not a Pelosi fan, but yes I can assume her impulse/motive wasn't for anyone to believe 500 mil people in a country with a total pop of 300 mil are laid off every month.

What's your "meme", "zietgest", or motive Don Quixote?

I am no fan of Pelosi by any stretch of the imagination, but give me a break. Everybody makes speaking gaffes, on both sides. This has nothing to do with the merits of the stimulus bill. This is where I have a problem with both sides, making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Look she was feeling around for an hysteria producing number and on the spur of the moment 500K just didn't feel hysterical enuff so she picked option B. Agreed it wasn't premeditated, it was a flustered and rushed moment perhaps, but I think I and Weykool are onto something.

I'm not saying it's a mountain, but I've seen a lotta similar looking foothills over the years.

onto the loony hatch, perhaps.

now you're even admitting she mis-spoke, and it was accidental with no pre-meditation, yet, some how, there's more to it.

We'd be more willing to give her a pass if Quayle's equally innocuous gaffe had been treated the way it should have been treated.

never mind that you're really stretching to go back in time 20 years, but the problem with Quayle was that it wasn't just one gaffe. he made gaffe after gaffe after gaffe.

whether it was his poor handling of questions about his military service and lack of experience (and the Bush team acknowledged then that Quayle did poorly); his wonderful spelling of potato; his geographical, er, know how "I love California. I practically grew up in Phoenix"; or his firm grasp of the obvious "For NASA, space is still a high priority"; Quayle proved to be woefully inadequate in handling the pressure on such a big stage.
