0 Subject: Children, Teens, and Crime

After reading a couple articles about teenage crime and the resulting sentences, i think this is something that is a problem.

teens who commit murder, and are sentenced to life, with no chance of getting out.

Teens who send nude photos to each other , being forced to register as sex offenders.

i think this is the type of situations we run into when over zealous DA's apply laws in way they aren't intended. i'm a firm believer in "if you can't do the time, don't do the crime," but why should children be published as if they are adults...especially if one of the "crimes" hardly seems like a crime at all.

Do you have as much trouble resisting the urge to send a pic from your phone as you do a poliboard Post Now! button?

I'm pretty sure that if you occasionally include in your posts various depictions and photoshops of people with their heads in their own behinds and some images with photos depicting the fictitional subjects of mildly vulgar childrens' insults; both in lieu of any useful or insightful commentary of your own, I don't think anyone on the right will ever bother you around here.

Could you guys try and leave the personal attacks in one thread? I used to enjoy reading the Politics threads to see opposing viewpoints and rarely comment. Any more all that I see is flaming. I remember when the Politics section was created and the fact that it was given much greater latitude in regards to personal attacks, but it's gone to far.

As to the subject at hand, I agree that over aggresive DA's have a part. I wouldn't mind seeing states not allow life without parole sentences to minors.

There was a murder locally that involved to minors. They repeatedly stabbed an elderly lady, they were tried and convicted of murder and given life sentences. The jury admitted that they didn't initially consider life sentences, until audio tapes were played of them laughing and joking about the murder. They had no regrets for ending her life and thought it was funny. I hope that they will eventually realize their error.

Is there any other background on the kid who killed his brother? It seems very strange that the jury would go with life without parole based on the facts relayed.

Apologies, Frick and any lurkers. You're right, of course.

Tree, I think you're jumping the gun a bit on this. A few cherrypicked anecdotes do not necessarily display a problematic developing trend.

I agree FL should rethink the standards for their registered sex offender list (along with any states with similar standards) and if there isn't more to the Quantel Lotts story than we read in that CNN article, clearly that young man's liberty should not be taken away for life. Usually such obvious miscarriages are reworked. Recall that Genarlow Wilson evenyually wound up serving about 2 years instead of the 10 he was sentenced to. Hopefully enough people will keep up Lotts' fight so that his punishment ultimately better suits the infraction. Having the family of the victim on his side should be a help.

Remember that every state has its own penal code and being charged as a minor in one state means a different thing from being charged as a minor in another state.

re 5: Frick...that is pretty much the only reason I never post on the poli boards.

I actually follow many of the threads, but its hard because I have to skip over many of the posts because they don't relate to the thread, they are quite often just insults and attacks that I have no interest in. And the sad thing is, that it is primarily the same 3-5 guys all the time, so those are the posts I just immediately skip by.

I have often typed something out and got ready to post it only to cancel at the last second thinking that I don't want to be the one who is going to be the new lightning rod for the attacks! haha

Reading this thread kind of reminds me of the Passover Seder i enjoyed with my family last night. All the adults at one table, combining worship with good food, good drink, good people, and generally, having a good time.

All the children at an adjacent table, doing the same, just a considerable less mature level.

Enjoy the children's table, Boxman and Baldwin. If you feel like making a contribution without some sort if immediate unwarranted attack, feel free to join us adults.

Frick/Mith - i agree. often in murder cases like this we don't have all the info, and it seems like there is more to the story. still, based on the facts, it seems like an overzealous DA.

obviously, i'd love MBJ's input in cases like this.

i'm not sure why, but i think the sex offender issue bothers me more. in the case of the murders, a crime was obviously committed, and a heinous one at that.

but in the case of teenagers sending nude photos to each other, i would say that in the vast majority of cases, it is a relative innocence at work here. yea, i would not want my teenage daughter sending nude photos to anyone, but i also wouldn't want anyone being deemed a sex offender because they did send photos.

From an MSNBC article in 2007

Quantel Lotts was 14. He and his brothers were at a friend’s house in St. Francois County, Missouri, and Quantel and his stepbrother Michael Barton started fighting.

Quantel chased Michael — who was three years older — with a bow and arrow before an adult stepped in. Not long after, while they snacked, one of the younger children noticed Quantel holding a knife and reported him to Michael.

“Let’s take this outside,” Michael told Quantel. In the yard, their shoving match ended in Michael’s death. Found guilty, he was sentenced to life without parole.

Today, speaking by telephone from prison, Quantel Lotts will not talk about what happened that day. But he remembers clearly where it left him.

“They say my stepbrother’s dead and they say I killed him,” he says. “When I first got locked up, I spent the first six months crying to myself every night.”

Still not a lot of details, but it sounds like it was more than horseplay that went to far. The fact that one child was white and the survivor was black probably did play a part.

On the child pornography charge, it is technically correct. Is the punishment to harsh? He was 18, when you cross that magical line all of your actions suddenly have much greater consequences (unless you get tried as an adult, see above). But to have him have to live the rest of his life as a registered sex offender? That will never get off of his record and even if it does, it will never completely disappear with the way the internet works. Seems like common sense took a break.

Tree...this is a direct example of the attacks | was referring to with my post. As much as you want to single out Boxman and Baldwin, and I agree that their posts are a part of the problem, I think that your posts in other threads are just as annoying to sift through while trying to find relevant arguments.

I guess I miss the point of all of these deep rooted attacks that are obviously based on years of arguing back and forth between you and the Bs and a couple other guys as well. Most of the posts are quite childish and often have nothing to do with the topic at hand. I guess that is the reason I use other media outlets to follow for debate materials, which is too bad because I really enjoy the other forums here on rotoguru because of the managers that check in here all the time.

I feel that I am in probably in the minority though, as many seem to chime in and enjoy that type of antagonistic banter.

I apologize for hijacking the thread, Frick's comment finally gave me something I wanted to respond to! I will leave now! No soup for me!

Barilko - no doubt, i tend to fight back with equal insults. although, to be fair, more often than not, when baldwin and boxman insult me, it comes from no where.

this thread, however, it particularly pissed me off. Baldwin can't even go one post without the insult. heck, he can't even pretend to hide it within some sort of constructive post.

that's why it particularly pissed me off. anyway, enough derailing of this thread.

your input - even though it was off topic - was important.
