0 Subject: Baseball Auction Draft League, Single Season

Posted by: nerveclinic
- Leader [05047110] Tue, Feb 09, 2010, 04:07

OK I am going to do this.

I was in several ESPN Auction leagues last year and I really enjoyed the draft.

I don't have a date yet for the draft (Since leagues are not opened) but I will probably do it quite late (A few weeks before the opening season.

You have to be online for the draft or you will be screwed since it's all based on auctions.

So far B7, Baldwin, Biba and Astade have expressed an interest.

I will put together ideas for draft timing and we can discuss. I am 12 hours ahead of west coast here in Dubai so it will be unusual timing. probably early morning west coast time 10AM on a weekend?

These leagues generally have 10 teams.

In the ESPN 10 team format it includes 5 OF and a MI and CI position which is a nice change from the typical roto set up so maybe we will just stick with their normal format?

Any one else interested throw your name out there.

I'd be interested if the timing of the draft works out, but my schedule is pretty crazy right now.

I was thinking roto but if others want to try head to head we
could vote on format.

Does weekday mornings WST, afternoon EST work for others
with draft or do you have jobs? It's fine for me as it would be
night time.

I was thinking about staying with the ESPN standard set up so
that is anyone wanted to try a mock draft to get the feel it would
be set the same way.

Bili no way you can pull off a weekend draft? I have to imagine
most cannot draft at work. We have to figure this out soon. Leagues
are now open, both Yahoo and ESPN.

I am not a guarantee either way. For better or worse, it's easier for me to steal an hour or two from work than from family, but I may have trouble with either. Depends on the day and time.

If you do it wicked early on any day (5-6 am) that would be the best. That's pretty much the only time I have to myself.

I won't be able to participate in the auction during the work week. If everyone else wants that, no biggie, I can try again next year. Work is hectic and I just don't have the ability to do it M-F...

Keep me posted whatever the league decides.

My experience with auction drafts are that they last 6 or more hours. I've never done an auction on the internet, I doubt they are any faster.

I'm already in three leagues. I love auctions, they are intense. If someone wants a designated auction agent, I'd do the auction and hand them the team. I just don't want to have a fourth team to worry about during the season.

If it's 6 hours, I'm out. I don't have that block of time available for much of anything besides my boy or work.

As I said earlier I was in several ESPN leagues last year and tried the auction. With their format it cannot take anywhere near 6 hours because it's on a clock, 30 seconds per pick resetting to 5 or 10 if there is a pick in the last 3 seconds. Something like that.

The draft I was in took a little over 2 hours.

I have to emphasize though you HAVE to be there or you are left with bad players although I think the computer can draft for you. Not advised.

I am leaning toward weekend because I am guessing that is when almost anyone has the time.

Looks like yahoo has free auction leagues available now. Including a free mock auction draft. If you want to go that direction.

looks like Yahoo has an auction draft application now. you can do a mock draft to see if it'll work out for a league.

Boldwin I think he means I can try it out, without the rest of you,
to see what I think.

Seems like this is a "Yahoo" crowd but I have to tell you I really
like ESPN.

One thing I like about ESPN is that with mixed league they use 5
outfielders instead of 3. They also add a MI position and a CI
position. This rewards managers who are better at creating a
team of depth which really shows off fantasy skills.

B7 suggested a head to head format because of the great weekly
match up... Tree vs Baldwin for example. Any thoughts?

I am willing to go on ESPN even though Yahoo! is more convenient (my other leagues are there).

I would prefer roto-style. Weekly matches are fun, but there is much variability. This being my first auction league, I'd rather see how it plays out before making it more complicated.

I would be interested in joining if you guys still have slots. I have fairly limited availability though and could only do in march 7 to 20th. One thing, I did a draft on yahoo last night, which went smoothly, but these are long drafts. 3+ hours. They go on awhile. i imagine that takes weeknights out unless everyone is same time zone.

Wait. noon eastern isn't 3 pacific, it's 9 pacific. Not as horrible, unless my wife is working; if so, then impossible.

9 eastern would be more do-able. 11 eastern would be do-able as well.

How do these work? Is the last pick almost certainly less important than the 1st?

Bili there are occasionally steals at the end of a draft but you can put on autoraft and spend time imputing values so it bids for you. Early picks are more important though yes.

very interesting draft. I have never done an auction draft before and I think it was great. Strategy seems alot different than your standard roto-style draft. There were alot of good deals left at the end of the draft. Made me realize it isn't worth it to overpay for a marginally better player in the early rounds.

I didn't think we had the draft full, so I didn't bother to check until 5 minutes before we started, boy, was I surprised!

Haven't done a single season auction in over a decade. Ten team leagues are strange to me, particularly when two or three are absent. I was afraid I overspent early, but I am glad I did. Will be interesting to see if I can get enough steals out of my squad, I have a bunch of guys who should steal about 20 each. Sure hope Ervin Santana can find his even numbered year magic, if not, well, the waiver wire is deep.

It was fun, but it sure showed that I was a rook at auctions. Am sure even Baldwin will kick my arse, and he wasn't even there. He was the only one absent, wasn't he?

Look forward to doing that again. I had figured that I would learn something that would help in my Draft leagues, but that certainly wasn't the case. Two different animals.

ESPN sent out a couple reminders yesterday, and once earlier today. It appeared that the computer did bid for you, and you were able to pick up several decent players for their price. Your team was full by the time some really good deals began to appear, but the top players were gone by then.
