Terribly sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and the loved ones of those lost.

Show of hands. How many think this is an accident?

*raises hand*
34 degrees and heavy fog is a bad combination.
Now, if you're asking me if I'd bet my life that it was an accident, I'll put my hand down.

RE #6: any ideas why on this anniversary? do you think it tied to the US missile defense shield plans in Poland? can you expound on your hunch?

This is round two of the attack-on-Georgia message.
It reads 'anyone else dare take the resurgent imperial Russia to task or shame her for past offenses'?
Speculation, it is true, but an educated guess.

I dont suppose it could have been an accident? Given that Poland had been trying to update the Presidential aircraft but lacked the funds. Or that Aeroflot, the Russian Airline, had taken the Tupalev out of service and grounded them all.

This is what I heard from my brother-in-law in Poland:
The pilot was warned that there was thick fog at the airport and urged to divert to Minsk. The President has reamed a pilot recently under similar circumstances who choose to play it safe and divert to another airport when he faced unsafe conditions. Supposedly, the pilot of this plane feared that the party would be diverted too far away to make the ceremony if they landed in Minsk.
Yes, it's not nearly as exciting as believing the Russians wanted to murder the Polish president, but that's so 1940.

I've been in a small plane that had to divert due to fog. Visibility was virtually nil, and 100mph is not what you want to be doing when you cant see. I can not imagine, trying to fly something that size, into near blind conditions. Yes, they have vastly more instrumentation and such, but blind is blind and flying in the blind CANT be very easily done.
Could it have been a conspiracy or deliberate act? Sure it could. But for some reason, I'm more inclined to think that with an aging a/c, in lousy weather conditions and severely limited visibility; the stage for disaster was pretty well set.

Could be. I am sure Putin who is personally managing the investigation will get to the bottom of it.

More than 150,000 Poles bade farewell to their president and first lady Sunday in an emotional funeral service here that capped more than a week of public mourning
Unfortunately, the volcanic plume prevented most of the world leaders from attending.

Human error, looks like.

Even more human error.
Four Russian soldiers who were assigned to guard the still-smoldering remains of a Polish airliner in April were charged Tuesday with stealing bank cards that belonged to an official who died in the crash.
