A thread to put stuff, typically thought provoking but sometimes not. Not a thread intended for partisan debate, but there you go.

On Pay Equality for Women
Marilyn vos Savant writes the "Ask Marilyn" column in Parade Magazine. She is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records Hall of Fame for "highest IQ." This is Marilyn's explanation of why the widely-quoted statement "women, on average, earn 77 cents on the dollar compared to men" is a misunderstanding and why she believes the wage gap between the sexes actually may be tiny.

I took an econometrics course in college. The professor that taught the class had done a study dealing with this issue. The only difference between men's and women's salaries could be broken down to a couple of issues. Women, more than men, leave the work force. Even if they come back, they are often 5-10 years behind their male equivalents.

I'd like to drill down into that issue a bit more--probably worth of its own thread. This HBR blog seems to show that the lastest study allows for all of the excuses traditionally given for the wage gap. At yet it persists, and grows wider over time.

HR industry? What do you do now, Tree? I've been in this industry my entire career (being an I/O pyschologist and all...).

Aaaaaaah, I see. I hope you like it. Human capital... "management" would be quite an overlap with what I do (measuring individual and organizational performance)...financial metrics are a different order as there are many assumption and inferences involved in getting a dollar value on performance.
Human capital "marketing"...not sure if that is the same thing. I'd assume yes given the "human capital" part.

Funny, Tree. Happy to help if I can. I am very steeped in HR stuff, particularly around the selection, evaluation, and measurement of people, as well as org' dev't, exec coaching, talent management, diversity, and all of that "soft" stuff. I am the HR dude who tries to measure and quantify this soft stuff...

Re 3: I am not sure that results from that study are generalizable to all jobs. It would have been interesting to see the same study done say for doctors and biologists. I would not be surprised that you would not get different results in different fields and MBA's would probably lead the way in gender gap do to both unmeasured gender differences and old boy networking (which probably falls under unmeasured gender differences), and actual bias.

The original study (pdf) appears to have allowed for industry (as one of a number of factors).
I dunno. The more I look at the numbers which allow for the traditional excuses for pay inequity, the more it looks bad, frankly.
Women start with less pay despite have this same education backgrounds and success and applying for, and getting, the same jobs.
There *might* be a component not being allowed for, in that many men will try to negotiate starting salaries but women will not (mostly because it appears to be counterproductive for women to do so--another example of bias, I think).

I'm coming at this from the outside, so if anyone wants to run with this issue a bit in a new thread I'd be an enthusiastic reader.
Right now, my issue-of-the-day is trying to get a farmer's market to my town...it's always something.

Who invented the light bulb?
According the esteemed site cracked.com , two different guys beat Edison to the punch: Heinrich Goebel and Joseph Wilson Swan both patented working light bulbs before Edison laid claim. I read that on the internets, so it must be true!
