Can anyone think of some town names for which, when see the name, we think of a singular disaster or tragedy there?
Kent State
Altamont
Bhopal, India
Jonestown
Three Mile Island
[No, Baldwin. Woodstock is not included. :) ] |

I'll take Columbine for $100, Alex?
Chernobyl for $1000.

And probably, depending on how finely you want to tune it, Hiroshima.

PD, I like the idea but your four of your five examples are not even towns, one is a university, the next is a pass in California. Jonestown was the name those guys called their compound/camp and Three Mile Island was just an island.
As for Auschwitz, thankfully that was not the name of the town near the camp, that's just the German name for it, it's name in Polish is Oświęcim
Boldy - Neither Love Canal nor Cherry are towns.
My contribution - Cleveland... THE singular disaster!

Mount Carmel/Waco
Ruby Ridge
It's nice to see that Dallas didn't make the early lists. Have we finally moved on?

Meh, and I'm -$900 too, since Chernobyl wasn't a town either.

FWIW, i think some of the above are really being stretched.
Cherry and Beslan, at least in the American vernacular, are hardly definitely not names that in my mind automaitcally translated to tragedy. Even Waco - i think of Baylor football.
to me, Lakehurst is more immediately linked to tragedy than any of those, and it barely registers.

Good points, Zen. KSU is in Kent, a name which has a vague English countryside feel to it. Maybe I'll have a bonus section for places like that.

chicago - have you seen the disaster that is their sports teams the past few years?
On a more serious note:
If you're going to the university don't forget Va Tech.
I wouldn't include TMI. It was definitely a big scare, but was not actually a disaster (I grew up being able to see the towers from my yard).
Not only Jonestown, but there is also Johnstown (The Great Flood of 1889).

Ah, yes, the Cubs.
Pompeii
Ouch, too soon :)
If we are using war sites, and I don't agree with their inclusion, the only one really cringe-worthy is Waterloo, Belgium.

SZ, not sure about the canal. That could be a subdivision for all I know, but Cherry is most definitely a town which I live 10 miles from.

Some of these are just places where bad things happened. I think thats a bit off the mark. When you say, "Pompei" I think of the volcano. When you say, "San Francisco" I may think of earthquakes in general. I may think of the earthquake that interrupted the world series. But I also think of a lot of other things and often think of those things first. In other words, San Fran is not synonymous with a specific bad event, even though there may be a well known disaster that happened there.
chicago though. Synonymous with the cubs and the cubs....what more can we say?

#25: Exactly. These are places when you hear the name, you think of that particular disaster.
