1) No one that I know has pointed out how Russia's involvement looks thru the eyes of the muslims on the scene.
In their eyes it looks like Russia taking the Shia side on claiming the leadership of islam and their vision for the 'appearance of the mahdi'.
2) Russia is also attempting to pre-empt influence the USA used to have in the area, including such countries as Egypt and SA in which the USA was unusually successful at insinuating itself. Egypt has a long record of waffling between the two super powers. The SA, not so much.
3) Then there is the comical 'Putin anxious to meet with Obama' recently.
