BTW, when I took Guardado, my short list was Guardado, Isringhausen, Rhodes.

Are we all on the same wavelength?

FYI to the league. I am getting ready to goto the Texas Tech / Missouri basketball game. I'll be gone until around 9:00pm CST. I'm not sure exactly what I want to do with my next pick. Alot of it will depend on who gets picked between now and my pick. With that said, I don't feel comfortable leaving a queue.

Funny, my shortlist for RP was Eddie, Rhodes, and Izzy. Had to go to Plan B when they were all gone just before me.

Yes! This is exactly what I wanted. I take Rivera and then Percival, Dotel, Rhodes, Isringhausen, Guardado, Hoffman all go later in the round. Thought about taking another one with my next pick, but...

I try not to get caught up in the run on a particular position. I try to stay the course and pick the player that best fits into my team. When it's this early though, many times that player is still one of the best players on the board.

My problem is that I was planning on taking a RP anyhow and then suddenly everyone before me has the same idea. Definitely dwindled down the list of closers with a guaranteed job pretty quickly.

I also try to stay away and not get caught up in a run for a certain position, as it usually leads up to drafting lesser value.

How does the weekend set up for people? We've made very good progress so far, and should hopefully get through at least round 7 by the end of today.

For the weekend, we could:
1. suspend the clock
2. lengthen the clock (8, 10 or 12 hours)
3. continue at 6 hours

What's your pleasure? Who thinks they may have difficulty staying in touch over the weekend?

having 3 ladies to entertain (well, 2 of them are VERY young) - my accessability to the computer will be rather limited. However, a 12-hour clock will work for me though I would favour to eliminate the clock until Sunday night (maybe restart the clock on Sunday 7PM ET)

I'd say keep the 6 hour clock but shorten the time it runs, maybe from 10am ET - 10pm ET. This would require an owner to only check in once or twice a day but still keep the draft moving.

Let me make a proposal for the weekend.
Starting Saturday morning, increase the clock to 12 hours through round 9. Continue to suspend the clock during the same 1am-7am period (EST)

If we make it through 9 rounds before Monday, we'll suspend the clock and pick it up Monday morning (with the normal 6 hour clock again). Also, if we get to the end of round 9 and there are any vacant picks, we'll wait for them before continuing round 10.

We've got a shot at clearing 9 rounds before Saturday, although it may be a long shot.

Actually, I'm a little afraid Walker will be traded, and that will totally shoot him down a few notches. At his best, Walker is an absolute stud, but it's been awhile.

Andruw Jones just went. I prefer him to Castillo, but I was at a point where I needed a middle infielder who can steal bases. Jones is in his prime and should have a great year.

With Jones gone, I have four guys on my short list right now, and I'm hoping at least one of them makes it back to me.

Andruw was becoming another Pierre for me. He was starting to stand out as an unpicked player in the midst of a bunch of players who had been taken. Definitely has good upside potential.

Dammit. Species took Dunn, who was a pretty deep sleeper on my list. He might be the most underrated player in baseball, and he's going to tear this league a new one in 2004.

But he's not one of my short list...

Dunn's walk rate hasn't really declined, so in this scoring system he's still pretty solid. A decent 1b is getting hard to find so I went for it. The man also stole 19 bases in 2002 so SB's in the teens would be sweet. I think last year was a fluke so he should improve.

Well, you can blame Species, because if he hadn't picked Dunn, I might have. I was in the process of debating Dunn vs. Lee when Dunn disappeared.

I was actually considering Lee back in round 4 when I took Preston Wilson. I didn't think those two were very far apart. So I was somewhat surprised to see him survive this long. I think too many closers and left-side infielders got in the way.

It's becoming clear in this draft that if you're looking at a particular player, you can assume that at least 3-4 other people are looking at that same player.

Sure is making strategy hard to follow.

OK, I'm here. Guru, I went back and forth with Lee and Loaiza for over 30 mins. I had remembered those guys names on guys I wanted to look at. I tried to pick the one that might not be there. Now that Lee is gone, I may have to reach...again, I have no notes with me so I am really unprepared. Gonna try to find a player that will fit into my team and not reach too far. Might take me a few mins but I'll pick soon.

HAHA! KKB, I've got a couple names now, but I have no idea exactly where they were in my notes and what players I am missing. One guy, who I like, may be a bit of a reach--but at this point will still help me and may not get back to me.

I'm sure I'm seing this because Guru is right next to me, but every single pick except for Wilson, he either took a player I almost took or did grab the player I was ready to take. Tough crowd!

Same thing happened in the RIHC draft.

When I've participated in other "expert" league drafts, there always seemed to be a a fair number of managers that didn't seem to know what they were doing - at least insofar as assembling a well configured roster with good statistical fit. I'm sure many did not approach it with much more than the back of an envelope.

These RotoGuru Invitational leagues are clearly the most competitive I've been in. Not many "obvious" sleeper opportunitites to cover for the unfortunate injury or player who simply craps out unexpectedly.

I can't say anything in regards to why I chose him at this point, hopefully I can say it by the time the rationale thread comes around. He is the player that I thought may have been a smidge of a reach but didn't think he'd be there for me by the time he got back to me. I'm sorry it took me little extra time to pick.

SW, what is a pitcher? Is this the guy that throws the ball towards the guys that hold a bat?

disclaimers:
1. I read something about pitchers and I already have Troy Percival
2. By the end of the 25th round I'll have a bunch of pitchers on my roster

;-)

We are seeing a range of approaches in this draft. I wonder how many were planned from the get-go, and how many have been dictated by subsequent activity.

"approaches" is a hard word to read...

If you'd given me the first pick, I'd definitely have a shortstop by now. Actually, I took Tejada in the 2nd round of the mock draft, and have had a pretty similar strategy here. I just have a preference against starting pitchers who aren't studs. Is than an approach?

hen, how many "studs" SP are there? seems that you are against a lot of people ... ;-)

Guru, my strategy is embedded in my ranking algorithm which I try to follow closely (in most cases, I end up picking a guy which is ranked among the top-5 of every round's avaliable players). The question is whether my assumptions were correct, assuming the projections are "given"... ;-)

Let's stick with my clock proposal in [36]. I'll repeat it here:

Starting Saturday morning, increase the clock to 12 hours through round 9. Continue to suspend the clock during the same 1am-7am period (EST)

If we make it through 9 rounds before Monday, we'll suspend the clock and pick it up Monday morning (with the normal 6 hour clock again). Also, if we get to the end of round 9 and there are any vacant picks, we'll wait for them before continuing round 10.

I'll be in and out today, but around for most of the day. If you want to leave a queue, I can handle it. I already have a queue from jumpball.

J has until 4:20 this afternoon.

Just to clarify - if we make it through round 9, suspending the clock until Monday does not necessarily mean suspending the draft until Monday. If we can continue to inch forward, let's do so.

The rationale thread was getting to be a chore to reorganize. Please try to follow these few simple rules:

1. When it is your turn to make a pick, also post your rationale from 2 rounds prior. If you are not ready with the rationale, then please post a placeholder entry. It is much simpler for me to go back and insert the text into an existing post slot than it is to splice in a completely new post slot.

2. If the manager(s) in front of you have neglected to post rationales or placeholders, please post placeholders for them before posting yours.

3. If you post a pick for someone else from their queue, please post a placeholder in the rational thread as well so that it is ready for the next rationale.

When you are ready to post a rationale for which there is a placeholder, either post it here or post it in the rationale thread. I can copy the text into the appropriate placeholder slot and then delete the out of sequence post.

I was actually worried that Species might take Contreras, given his Yankee bias. But I suppose he really didn't need another starting pictcher at this juncture, and Nixon was the highest rated hitter on my list, too.

Through 142 picks, here are the tallies by position (making some judgments about split elig):

5 C
15 1B
9 2B
13 3B
13 SS
35 OF
37 SP
15 RP

Assuming that the difficult positions are C, 2B, and SS, a complete roster needs 4 of them (incl. MI). Only one team has 3 of those slots filled, while seven teams have only one of them filled.

Two teams have no relievers. Two teams have only one starter.

I like Contreras quite a bit. Usually when a player has a good strikeout rate and bad numbers elsewhere, it's a decent indicator for his future. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's unclear if that particular effect is different for a *cough* 32-year-old than it is for a 23-year-old. There really aren't many precedents to match up with. Hideo Nomo isn't a great comparison because he did everything well from the start. Rene Arocha might be a good example, but 27 isn't exactly old. Arocha had a good strikeout rate but never harnessed the rest of his game. I'm optimistic about Contreras but the best part is that he'll be a precedent we can use to evaluate other players who are comparable.

Trot Nixon has been sticking out like a sore thumb for quite some time. His OPS is high, but I think he overachieved (though not as much as Mueller) and he doesn't steal and could get lost in a powerful Boston lineup.

Pretty sure I won't be picking today, but hopefully some of my guys will still be there.

Anyone besides KKB and darkside:
I have a 2 man queue and my two rationales to give to you if you'll take 'em.

If the two in my queue are gone, I will not be able to make my pick until later tonight. There are too many other options to consider right now.

I hear you Ref. I had Fullmer targeted quite a while ago and have been waiting to pull the trigger. I'll write it more eloquently in the rationale thread, but Fullmer jumps from the 25th best offensive ballpark to the Number One offensive ballpark in the league.....yes even better than Coors. Of course, part of those numbers are due to the rather offensive Rangers pitching staff, but the bottom line is that The Ballpark is a great park for hitters and Fullmer is in line for a great year.

Ouch Guru. It gets a little worse. I hear Chase Utley is taking grounders at first. Better pick him up quick.

Jim Thome (1B) PHI 3/7/2004
Thome's broken finger could keep him out as long as eight weeks, the Philly Inquirer reports. Three weeks is the best-case scenario for Thome, but six to eight weeks is the worst-case scenario. The Phillies won't know if Thome needs a pin for his finger until Monday, when he visits a hand specialist back in Philadelphia.
