The draft has been activated, but the official start time of the draft is 7am ET Monday, March 7. Picks prior to that time are allowed, but are optional and untimed.

Starting at 7am, we will institute a 6 hour clock. The clock will pause between 11pm and 7am ET. (We may also decide to relax the clock on the weekend, but this will be decided later in the week. Assume nothing!) If you time out, the draft will move on. Skipped picks can be made up at any time thererafter.

If your turn arises and you still have an outstanding skipped pick, I will probably move the draft on to the next picker. If we get well ahead of pace, I may relax that stance. But hopefully it will not become an issue. This also means that people on the turn have a single clock period to make their first pick, or both will be skipped. (The draft software will do this automatically.)

We will use this thread for logistical communications, to help others anticipate potential delays, to recruit someone to accept a queue, to announce or solicit trades, to coordinate changes in the clock for weekends, etc. Please check this thread regularly throughout the draft, as we will rely on it as the primary means of communication among RIBC managers.

Established draft etiquette is that no undrafted player names should be mentioned, and in the event of an infraction, should be edited out.

After two rounds have been completed, a separate draft rationale thread will be started. We will try to keep that thread on a 2 round lag. Therefore, after you make your pick in round 3, please immediately post your round 1 pick rationale, and so forth. I usually draft my rationales as I make picks, so that all I need to do when the time comes is copy and paste. I recommend that approach for everyone.

Everyone may follow the draft using this link: http://rotoguru1.com/php/otc25.php

I'm more interested in hearing your rational on why you picked the 3rd pick over the 5th or 8th. Perhaps you like picking closer to one end of the draft.

bmd, I don't suppose there's any reason to not talk about rationales for picking a particular draft slot (if there is, Guru can feel free to delete this), so...

I do tend to prefer to be towards one end of the draft. On one hand, if a run on a position starts and the draft is going away from me, I can have the feeling of, "Oh well, not much I can do about it." But, when it is my turn, I usually have at least 2 needs to fill, so having a pick towards one end helps me get both of the 2 guys I'm looking at. The reason I took #3 is because it was the closest to an end, with a high first round pick. I was at the bottom of last year's draft and wanted to try the view from (near) the top.

In the end, I don't think there's any real advantage for one spot over another in this league. Last year's draft slot with resulting finish...

1st pick: 3rd place
2: 2
3: 11
4: 16
5: 14
6: 9 (tie)
7: 1
8: 4
9: 15
10: 7
11: 6
12: 9 (tie)
13: 12
14: 13
15: 5
16: 8

Now obviously a fair amount of that has to do with managing, but to me it shows that this league is competitive up and down and that a particular draft spot doesn't mean much except comfort factor during the draft. I honestly considered the 8th spot when I was making my selection, but in the end I just wanted to try my chances with the highest slot available at the time, particularly with its proximity to an end.

I must have been drunk an hour ago. I wanted the Randro and ended up with the former DBack's 1-2-punch that 2-handedly won the World Series. Too bad we need more then 2 arms to win the RIBC.

I'm guessing that Guru is hoping that Dunn runs like they want him to. If he can keep relatively the same power numbers and add 10 extra SB's he's a solid pick. Of course, I'd still be leary of a guy that struck out 195 times last season.

Four stud 1b's gone in 4 picks. At this rate I'll have [withheld].

Things for him: Hitting behind [withheld], [withheld] and Miguel Cabrera

I started the rationale thread so that it's ready when we start round 3.

Please do your best to keep the rationales up to date. If you cannot post your (2 round lagged) rationale when you make each pick, then please post a placeholder entry. This not only provides a slot to merge it in later on, but also lets the next drafter know not to continue to wait for you. In fact, my preference would be that when your pick is due, FIRST add your next rationale (either the rationale or the placeholder) and THEN make your next pick. In the past, most people have been pretty good about keeping up, but some have tended to ignore the rationale thread if they aren't ready for it.

If you have to catch up on one or more rationales, please post them here, and a moderator can insert it in the proper place.

That yelling and screaming any of you might have heard coming from California was ME upon seeing Sheffield gobbled up by Athletics Guy.

I even sent out feelers trying to move UP. I didn't see AG as a huge risk of taking him seeing as though he had Abreu and a pitcher so I didn't think he'd take a 2nd OF. I guess I was wrong. :(

Of course Young was supposed to me mine before Sheff . . . Oh well, Mariano is a pretty good consolation prize.

Guru -- I was looking at the Draft Grid that's provided by On The Clock and noticed that you have onlt a P column listed. Is it too late to change that to two columns - SP and RP? I think that would provide value. Also, does anyone see value in having the Util column?

Yeah, I was actually glad you took Izzy as I really wanted Hoffman as I think Sdg will get him a lot of save opportunities with the staff they have. But, yeah, it's nice you can 'fall back' on Mota.

I'm glad the closer run started as I feel it justified my Lidge pick (pretty much the sole reason I took him so early).

I missed it again, but there are some options left that I considered as a #2 closer for my team. - before the draft of course. - now one of those has to be my #1.

on the other side I think that lots of the drafted closers were taken too high, so this could only be positive for my team.

what's up with this mob mentality? didn't your guys' parents raise you better than that? If all your friends were jumping off a bridge to get a closer, would you?

The same thing happened to me last year, that's partially why I tried to pick in the middle. ah, you live and you don't learn...

Now I'm trying to figure out how we can use this to our advantage. If all four of us collude to get no saves, we'd get 2.5 points each..

If non-holders of saves made an agreement together that either the save-holders made a fair trade of one closer to each, or they would throw all of their talent to one team just before the trading deadline, would that be unethical collusion? Sounds like it.

What if they warned all closer-holders that unless such trades were made available to all, they would publically spin a wheel just before the trading deadline and send all their good players to one closer-monopoly team chosen at random. Unethical collusion? Or legal attempts to bust an oligopalic combination (a monopoly held by many sellers, not one.)?

I have never seen the exact mechanics of what is "[unethical] collusion" described on any fantasy site or board.

And we won't see them here, either, because we're all nice people. But there would be no better league to explore this in than this one, governed by Guru, whose decisions might start a fantasy jurisprudence on the subject ;)

Ok enuf ruminating. Let's pick.

there is absolutely no remaining closer worth a pick this high. so I have to gamble a bit and possibly end up with no regular closer, or a closer that loses his job after 3 weeks of regular season action.

I just got back from blowing snow out of the driveway. I had an email from Species with his queue. So I dutifully made the pick on his behalf.

Then I went back to look at the rest of my email. In my junk folder I found another message from Species asking me to ignore that queue. I have no idea why it went into my junk folder, but that's why I didn't see it when the other arrived.

I always delete rationales from this thread once they've been moved over, so if you are referencing a rationale posted in this thread, bear that in mind.

Changing the subject... When you draft for multiple teams, do you find that some of the same players keeps sifting to the top of your list? And when they do, are you reluctant to pick the same players on multiple teams?

Sometimes I try to avoid doubling up, just to protect against an injury or an off year hurting multiple teams, especially for early round picks. I'm less worried about later round picks, especially if they are players with more upside risk than downside risk.

The only reason I raise it is that I just took Renteria on another team, so I've now got him twice. I was hesitant to take him on a second team, but finally decided that it was the appropriate choice under the circumstances. I'm curious how some of the rest of you treat those decisions.

Guru, I drafted Travis Henry in 3 of 4 fantasy football drafts I did last year, and I would have taken him in the 4th if he hadn't been taken 2 picks earlier.

Needless to say that didn't work out great for me. But, if you have a strong feeling about a guy and something empirical to back it up, you have to trust your ability. Some people are better at evaluating fantasy potential than others. You are the best judge of your own skill.

I have had many other experiences like what you described. It means that you are valuing a guy more than the people you are drafting with. And there's nothing wrong with that as long as you are right (not like I was with Travis Henry).

When you draft for multiple teams, do you find that some of the same players keeps sifting to the top of your list? And when they do, are you reluctant to pick the same players on multiple teams?

Very much so. Part of it is the reason you state and there's another part of me that wants to have some difference in my teams. In other words, can I successfully manage 2+ different teams (sometimes under different rules/categories)? I only have one other baseball team this year and it'll be a much less competitive and much smaller group, so I'm hoping those 2 factors alone will help me have 2 different rosters. If not, the fact that I'll be more willing to take chances with my other team will likely make a difference as well.

Along the same lines as MC, I actually drafted Jiri Welsch in all four of my roto leagues this year. All low draft picks as it was, but when you're wrong in evaluating talent, it hurts. By the way, he was off all of my rosters a month or so into the season... Of course, I just picked up BJ Ryan on two teams yesterday, so here's hoping that the Jiri debacle was a one time occurence.

........without a doubt you get stuck on certain players you 'like'. Last year for me it was Brad "Rotowire thought you'd be a god in 2004" Fullmer. That died faster than one of your pop ups, Brad.

I'm back... will pick shortly.

To answer Guru's question... I actually try, where appropriate, to draftthe same guys. It adds to my enjoyment of watching sports and participating in fantasy sports. I hate rooting for RJ on one team and having to root against him at the same time because a competitor has him in anotehr league.

I'm not saying that is sound fantasy advice (eggs in one basket), but itadds to my enjoyment.

Whew, miserable experience today, last 5 hours.

1. Mouse dies.
2. Backup mouse doesn't work.
3. Go out and buy new mouse.
4. New mouse doesn't work. No movement.
5. Wonder if driver not working or if plug and play hasn't recognized mouse. Try things. Can't get past useless "User name/password" screen on Windows. Log into safe mode to try to get plug and play help. Can't get to help -- because mouse isn't working.
6. Set up backup computer. Search for cables to connect everything on backup. Lie on floor and crawl around unconnecting and reconnecting cables to power bar.
7. Netscape keeps closing on backup computer (10 years old, can't take anything newer than Netscape 4.7 or something.)
8. Unset up backup computer.
9. Set up first computer again, for no particular reason, with no ideas to try.
10. Mouse suddenly works. No idea why.
11. Check OTC, see half queue gone.

my queue also got depleted. here the list in no particular order:
Berkman
Green
Halladay
Ordonez
Sexson
Wells

I have an offer for swapping draft picks, so I have to wait for my pick until I get a response.
now I can dig deeper to find the next players that I will not get.

I'd prefer a pause. With a 6 hour clock, relaxing it is almost going to be the same as a pause, so I figure just pause it. I'm sure people will be here and there and we can still get some picks in, but at our current pace, we're well within the time frame to finish on time.

Some good rationales. Toral, I hope you're right about Odalis. Yokel, Hallday was one of the many injuries I had last year in RIBC that helped lead to my demise.

Now I'm the only team with no starting pitching.

That wasn't necessarily my strategy going in. There were a few instances when I was thinking of taking one, but they were always snatched before my turn.

Last year, I had dismal luck with my pitching choices, starting with Halladay in Round 1. None of the pitchers I drafted in the first 15 rounds last year were worth it. So when several of my early hitter picks got into injury trouble last spring, I was cooked.

I guess I'm gun shy this year.

Last year I focused on hitting early, with my first 2 SP's taken being Schmidt in round 1 and Peavy round 10. Of course, this year by the 9th round I already have 3 SP's, which is a large departure from my draft strategy, but hopefully it works out just as well.

I wanted Odalis this year too(as I wanted him last year), but again he went earlier than I expected and I'm a little concerned with him being brought along slowly from his injury. However, I still think that's a great pick.

You're right Guru, my bad.

I couldn't decide between Wickman and Batista and ultimately took Wickman. Then thought not everyone would know about Batista so may get him on the return but he was gone. If he went was going to get Piazza to backup C and be a 1B and he went next. I've had a pretty good draft thus far, but when plan A and plan B go out the window that fast, it's a scramble!

Guru, I debated long and hard whether Roberts would make it back to MY next pick, and I determined that if I missed out on him, his steals would be harder to replace than it would be to replace the numbers of the next guy I want.

Guys - I'm very disappointed with the rationale updates today. When I posted my 8th rounder, I first had to fill in about 1 dozen placeholders. Now that I went to post my ninth rounder, I find that Chris is the only one to have posted since my last pick. I'm now going to have to post 11 more placeholders.

Please follow the following procedure: make your draft pick and post a rationale or a placeholder. If you are posting a queued pick for someone else, then post a placeholder for them. IF everyone does their part to keep it up to date, then I won't get stuck posting a full round of placeholders each time my pick is ready.

Guru,

I'm confused at how you want this done. I've had my Danny Graces rationale ready to go for a long time. I've been waiting to post it in order (one pick away in the rationale thread].... if I e-mail it to you or post it here, it just causes you to do the work to get it in.

it was the same thing for Sexson yesterday.... I was ready to go, then BOOM a bunch of placeholders before me and after me passed me by.

I've been keeping up per pour request by the "my turn" windo in the rational thread opens and closes too fast for me to see 9just now you had to placehold Graves for me).

Anyway, this isn't a complaint, it's just that I don't see how I could have got my last 2 in without e-mailing you or posting and have to move them.

My suggestion was to post your rationale first, THEN make your next pick. If your need to post placeholders first, then do so. Don't wait for someone else to catch up. Take charge.

If everyone followed that approach, then you wouldn't have to wonder whether the person who just picked is about to post. He would have already posted.

If you have been passed, then post it here. (I'd prefer that you post here rather than emailing.) If you haven't been passed, then post placeholders.

I know that some of you have "day jobs" and can't keep up with every rationale, but we were doing pretty well until today, when things completely broke down.

Toral #337 - Thanks. I waffled over that pick for 20 minutes. I saw Walker's gaudy OBP/SLG and thought I'd jump on it, but then read about his back already giving him trouble and thought I'd wait. Then I was set to take Mike Sweeney, but chickened out there too and also felt he'd make it back on my 2nd pick.

Adams was about the last "closer" still on there...and of course by now we are using that term pretty loosely....but with Ref hogging 3 closers and most others with 2 I figured it was now or never.

Then of course Walker AND Sweeney get nabbed so I settle for the 2nd CI I wanted in Durazo.

Sorry for the delay this AM -- had LASIK surgery last night and have been resting a lot. Looking good today though!

For some reason I was thinking it was 15 games to be eligible in Yahoo. I think that's way too long, but we are at their mercy. Maybe it's 10. Cuddyer is available at 4 positions so that could help us.

position eligibility

short:
- initial positions are set by yahoo
- during the season a player gains a postion if he started 5 games or appeared in 10 games

last year the ruling was 15 appearances, so it is a bit easier this year.

I hear ya Peter, this league is definitely tougher to draft in than the one I was in last year. Seems like every round I've missed the guy I originally wanted.

I had Reed penciled in as my 4th OF(was thinking of taking him in the 16th round or so). What really attracted me was his 140 BB to 116 K(!!) ratio in the minors.

Only key with him is whether he hits for power(which he's never really done) or steals bases(which he used to do in abundance). Oh, and also whether he hits 2nd(behind Ichiro) or 6, 7, 8, 9.

Nice pick of Gonzalez, KKB. I really thought he might slip back to me. He's very good and if Mesa loses 'it', he'll be the one filling his shoes.

I didn't intend to take any MR yet but then Gordon and Hawkins flew off the board and I figured I had to get Otsuka now.

darkside, I was actually looking at another MR in that pick and had considered him with my previous pick, but thought I could sneak him to the pick I got him with. I took Gonzalez over the other MR I was looking at because I like Gonzalez being behind Mesa and PIT not wanting to trade him to OAK. Makes me think he'll get a chance if/when Mesa falters even a little bit.

He's only my second first baseman. It seemed to me like I should someone in addition to Dunn. It's not like I'm stockpiling them.

I've been eyeing Broussard for several rounds, and decided that there were few enough options at 1B that I should act now. Sounds like I was right.

If Gordon hadn't been taken, scaring me into getting Otsuka, I would have taken Broussard. But, given that I've got two 1B and a 3B I figured I could let him go and wasn't surprised to see him snatched up. I think he's a great 15th round pick.

I moved Feliz to 3B.

I note that Khahan, who has been handling Matt S's queue, said that he (Khahan) would be out most of today. So we may have to wait awhile - unless someone else has his queue as well.

jumpball, you'll be happy to know that Rincon was who I was considering before taking Gonzalez. And no, I'm not interested in trading them. ;)

KKB -- I had Gonzalez rated a tad higher too.
You sure you don't want to trade? I'll throw in my 26th round pick! :-)

holt [#423] -- There wasn't really a "run" on middle relievers last year, but the first one was taken in round 12 last year and the second in round 13.
You'll get my reasons for getting two in rounds 14 and 15 pretty soon.

I took a setup man in round 12 last year. Someone else took one in round 13, and then I took another in round 14. All three of those picks were disappointements. LaTroy Hawkins was also taken in round 14, although he might have been considered a closer at that point. Those guys were all picked before Francisco Rodriguez, who lasted until the middle of round 15.

Given that impressive bunch of early picks last year, I've been a bit gun shy this year.

Well Khahan posted at about 8 am in the G20 thread and Matt S has posted his rationales due after this pick at 9:30, yet he hasn't picked. Not sure what's up.

Agree Ref.....but he times out in just over an hour and I assume we will not be waiting.

Like holt and Toral, I have sent a queue to Guru, so everyone be back at 1:00 ET and let's roll.

I'm on the horns of a bit of a dilemma.

Matt S is scheduled to time out at 1pm. With his traveling in Latin America, he's been relying on designated pickers to take his queue. I believe Khahan has handled most, if not all, of his queues.

Khahan posted elsewhere that he will be unavailable for much of today. I don't know whether he or Matt have made alternate arrangements or not. Unfortaunately, Matt's draft position is on the turn, so if he times out, 2 picks would be skipped.

If I was scheduled to pick next, I would be inclined to wait awhile longer, given Matt's difficult situation, and the fact that we are running way ahead of pace. Clearly, we are not at risk of running out of time.

I am not scheduled to pick next. However, I do have queues from both holt and Toral. So I probably do control the pace of the next two picks.

I feel somewhat honor bound to make those two picks as soon as Matt's clock expires. But I feel badly about sticking Matt with two skipped picks when he seems to be making a Herculean effort to keep the draft moving along.

Hopefully, Matt's picks will get made before 1:00, and all of this will be moot.

What do the rest of you think I should do if Matt times out?

RE:438 (whew this is quite the thread) I'm cool with whatever you decide. I have my choice ready so unless it's nabbed before me, I'll be selecting as soon as I'm aware it is my turn.

I have a queue from Species as well. If we move ahead, it sounds like Matt risks getting pretty far behind.

Hmmm... Matt's pick was already due at the time that Khahan posted at 8am. Either he forgot, or perhaps he didn't have a current queue.

Re: 438. I say wait. Though we're far enough along that no MAJOR pick will be missed, Matt S' team will no doubt be handicapped by missing 2 picks and it sounds like a lot of people are willing/able to make their picks pretty quickly if things get going again. He could, easily, miss out on 10 picks or more through what I think most of us could agree is no fault of his own. It's not like he didn't send a queue.

Matt S has, as Guru pointed out, made a HUGE effort to keep his portion of the draft moving despite his travels. Given that, I see no purpose in screwing him at this point in the draft. Also as Guru pointed out, we're WAY ahead of schedule. Giving some extra time for someone who has gone out of their way to keep the draft moving this whole time seems like the least we could do.

I would be ok with waiting until holt's time is almost up. Like you said, we're well ahead of pace. As long as we can get to youngroman before the end of his day, we should still get a number of picks done today.

I am here until 1pm, then away until 5pm and back available until 7pm. so count on me doing my pick between 5 and 7pm (if I'm up of course).

Guru - I wanted to let you know that in post 435 you mentioned a lot of undrafted pitchers.

RE: #434 & #435
I was going to post more detail, but I didn't want to put names out there that hadn't been drafted yet.
"gun shy" ? -- i wish you had mentioned that earlier, Guru, I might have waited 2 more rounds! :-)

don't forget, I managed to get Brad Lidge in the 19th round last year. Unfortunately, I'm once again stuck in a similar position and need to come up with a surprise closer.

Matt S got his picks in, so that dilemma is resolved.

I made the queued picks for holt and Toral. Unfortunately, Species left a queue with only one name, and that name was taken. So we may have to wait awhile.

I'll clean up my faux pas in 435. Oops!

Wow that was lucky! I did send a queue to Khahan last night, however it seems he has been tied up. I went to the bank this morning and had a bit of a mixup, so decided to check my account online to make sure I wasn't overcharged. I figured I would also check to see who I got with my picks...only to see I had 16 minutes left!!!

Anyway, thanks for the plans to wait for me...it's much appreciated. I will try to check in later tonight to make my next picks, or send a queue. The town I'm staying in is on an island, whose power lines are currently in the lake. I'm hoping they will have everything up and running tonight, otherwise I'll have to walk over here again in the blistering heat. :-)

Sorry for the delay, hopefully things can move along quickly for the rest of this round...
