Subject: The Dirty Dozen

  Posted by: Great One - [240562110] Thu, Jan 21, 2010, 12:34

Hello everyone and welcome to new The Dirty Dozen!
Khahan left us a great league behind and I look forward to handling things from here on out. I wrote up a small league rules page so everything is in one place. I'll email my address seperately for anyone mailing checks. I tweaked payouts so kafenatid is just worked in, and down to 3rd place gets their money back.

The Dirty Dozen League Constitution

Entry Fee = $10 (Due by Opening Day)
Keeper Deadline will be the last day of February each year
7 keepers

Payouts = 120 pot

1st Place 80
2nd Place 20
3rd Place 10
Kafenatid 10

Trade Review
Commish review, will push through in about 24 hours unless anyone raises any questions. Generally the next morning unless a trade was accepted the evening before.

Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util (new)
SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL, DL
Batters Stat Categories: Runs (R), Home Runs (HR), Runs Batted In (RBI), Stolen Bases (SB), Batting Average (AVG)

Please confirm you plan to return in 2010.
We need to find a new manager to take over Khahan's spot, he left a pretty good team behind. Anyone reading this that has interest please email me.

Keeper Deadline = Sunday 2/28 at midnight
Keepers will be entered on Monday 3/1 and draft can begin after all keepers are entered. We'll go untimed for the first round so we know everyone is aware and up and running on Kafenatid.

Yeah, I'll be in. Pretty sure I don't have to go by Polkaroo this year.

I also looked at my team recently, and am looking to trade this combo: Matt Cain and Heath Bell. In return, I want the best hitter I can get.

GO,

I thought there were more trades than that involving picks. However, checking back in my inbox for the dirty dozen I do not find any. So email wise, it looks like that is it. And there was a standing rule that trades involving picks should be emailed in.

Just checking in and thought I'd help out w/ any info I had on trades. Good luck to all this year.

Posting interest here is fine too, I also got a couple emails about it. So what we'll do is establish some candidates over the next couple weeks and go from there. Then I'll announce the leagues choice say the Monday after the Super Bowl (to give the new guy a few weeks to sort things out before the keeper deadline).

re: 7 Glad it happened in the off season! I would have hated for that to jeopardize my third place finish!!!!

I am in, and most likely looking to acquire a 7th keeper. I would be offering a draft pick.

Unfortunately I think I am going to have to pull myself out of this league this season.

I am having some major life event going on right now-

1st and most important we will be officially adopting our foster don this spring, I will be spending alot of time with him.

I will be having back surgery for my bad discs

I am taking masters courses and working.

I just do not think I will be able to put the effort in all my leagues this season so I had to pick a couple.

I really enjoyed my time in this league and hope that when things cool down if there is an opening in the future you will consider allowing me back in the league.

Thank you to all

As of right not my keepers would be:
Arod
Jose Reyes
Brandon Phillips
Joey Votto
Roy Halladay
Justin Verlander
Brandon Webb

The following can be had very easily:
Torii Hunter
Jason Kubel
Matt Wieters
Scott Kazmir
Rich Harden

Also, the payouts look different than in years past. I think 3rd place should make some money. I propose:
1st: $70
2nd: $25
3rd: $15

Regarding the prizes, I was just trying to keep in multiples of 10 for bookkeeping purposes, like if Blue Hen got 3rd (a pipe dream I know!), he'd get 10 and then he'd just be covered for next season. Limiting leftover balances, as well as $ that need to be mailed either way. I don't think anyone would really be all that excited for the extra $5, they are just happy they had a free season.

As the winner of this year's free season, I agree. The extra $5 would probably just have been rolled over to 2011. No need to send me a cheque for $5.

I'll post their rosters shortly for them.

Please welcome Slizz and DPR to the Dirty Dozen!...
Slizz will be taking over Khahan's squad.
dpr will be taking over Wiggs' squad

Wiggs gets first option on the the waiting list should he have the opportunity to return, Goldcoach - we'll keep you in mind as well should the opportunity arise.

Thanks everyone. Lets get this season rolling. We've got about a month til keepers are due.

Excited to see my roster. I will likely be looking to make some trades but preliminarily I like Kinsler, reynolds, granderson and mccutcheon as keepers. Likely followed by lackey lee and abreu. I will try to improve those last 3 ideally.

Trade Thoughts:

Did I pay too much for a one year production from Aaron Hill? Maybe, but 2b looks pretty weak this year, and this was probably the only guy that was going to be available to me. A 5th round pick in this keeper league is really a 12th round pick, so I am happy with the move.

I still might need to add one more keeper due to all the talent I moved out to get Mark Teixeira last season.

BH, enjoy that greecey meatball Youkilis while you can. I see Butler's stats being close to his and I picked up a potential Cy Young award winner in the process. Can't complain. I just hope Billingsley's #s this year trend more to his 1st half of last year instead of his 2nd half.

Great negotiation tactic, Pete. You laughed when I said that Butler and Billingsley both had a chance to be better than Youk separately. Clearly, I was right.

However, Youk is better, and I needed to cut down on keepers. Billingsley and Butler were sitting at 8 and 9 so I am quite happy with this trade.

Registered league, invites going out... added extra UT spot.

Also, an option I noticed was when to add guys to the player pool. I've currently got it at "when player enters the majors" -- do we want that or do we want to be able to add minor league players? Also, do we want to offer the ability to draft players not in the system (i.e. some AA player that Blue Hen is hot for and he wants to stash).

I'll email this as a vote. 7 votes wins.

Actually, screw that second option, we're going with only draft guys in the system because its too damn difficult to track guys not in the system. So either the player pool is -- Yahoo's whim or once they enter the majors. Vote coming.

I feel that in a keeper league every player should be available. I am not sure I understan what you mean by when they make it to the majors, but I dont think we want to allow last years champ (#1 waiver right?) to get their pick of the rookies effectively for the last pick of the draft.

Also, since payment is now being mentioned, has it been listed anywhere in this thread where to send the money?

Alright - based on discussion via email, here's what we are going to do.

1. We're going to go with the "As soon as Yahoo! adds them" player pool as defined by them(as we have done in the past). So they will have "Evan Longoria" (Scott Sizemore this year for example) or whatever on the verge of debuting guy and we can draft or pick them up post draft as we see fit.

2. During the draft anyone can pick anyone they want, college player, overseas, Barilko's magic rabbit... whoever. We'll pick an obvious "Heathcliff Slocumb" type placeholder who will need to remain on your roster until that player gets called up or you will lose your rights to drafted player. After that player gets added please notify me and I'll add them manually to your roster so you don't have to use waiver priority etc. If you pick once of these guys, its your responsibility to let me know they've been called up and added to the system. Also, lets please have a gentlemen's agreement not to add any of these guys on purpose and if you notice another guys placeholder has been called up, please let the league know.

3. The draft is your only opportunity to pick these guys and use the placeholder system. Otherwise, when Yahoo adds them throughout the season - they go through waivers and everyone gets an even shot based on the rolling waiver priority.

So anyone against 2 extra rounds? (1 for the UT, 1 more bench spot).

Canada was just setting up the right matchups. Everyone knows that Russia and the US are the biggest money makers for our bars and television ratings, so tanking last night ensures Canada's best chance to face both teams again in this tourney. What a team, looking out for small business owners everywhere.

On a similar note, I plan to look out for all of you little guys here in the Dirty Dozen too by dominating all the categories.

While that obviously eliminates any chance at first place for you guys, it also levels out the rest of the playing field by ensuring no other team will get a huge 12 points in a category.

You are welcome. We Canadians are so polite.

Anyone who is interested in trading for Juan Uribe, it looks like I am going to be forced to let him go. It sucks, but I can only keep so many guys. Uribe comes from a medal placing fantasy team, so he would bring a winning attitude and some nice intangibles to any Dirty Dozen team.

In all serious, I would be interested in upgrading my last keeper slot, but I will admit at a very limited price.

I can move Javier Vazquez plus a draft pick, or just a draft pick, but will not move anything really high.

SO:

If you have a guy, preferably a starting pitcher, and you would like to upgrade a later pick instead of losing him for nothing, shoot me an email.

Also, if you would like to acquire Vazquez, shoot me an email as well.

Exactly.

And as for the Canadian Hockey team, I would be more than willing to engage in a little side bet that they end up with a Gold. (Much like Team Barilko will have at the end of the Dirty Dozen season this year)

Don't feel bad BH. You should have never been in the top 3 to begin with. But hell, if Barilko can finish in 3rd place, pretty much anyone who runs a team out there should have a good shot.

And oh crap, I just noticed that keepers are due 2/28.

GO, in the past for Dirty dozen the draft clock ran from 8 (or 9) am to 11pm EST. It paused on weekends from Fri 11pm and did not resume again until Monday at 8 (or 9) am EST.

*yes, I'm still peeking in. Can't completely let go. if I keep the interest thru the whole season, I may look to grab a spot if one opens up next year*

on behalf of those of us that have 2+ hr meetings, I recommend having a broader window for picks....if we slow down during the draft then we can re-assess a shorter clock.

If you need that big of a window to fit your broads in, either get a smaller broad, or start getting them to use the door. Damn Supersize me.

Holt, come on I earned that third place finish fair and square. Its hard to compete in fantasy baseball in Canada when you have to turn to page 9 out of 9 of the national newspaper, which is past the hockey, curling, ice skating, canoeing, more hockey, and finally some more hockey news to see baseball stats from the Saturday games of the week before.

Looks like I'm "Canada Rules"... oh well. Barilko, I'll be sending you my kafenatid log in so you can start plugging in players and pick trades. Whatever you don't get done at lunch I can finish this afternoon or tonight. We'll turn the draft on by tonight and the first round we'll do with no clock so that everybody knows we are up and running. I think eveyrone signed up for Kafenatid so thats great.

Astade, got yours, although I factored in the 10 dollar draft into the prize pool so that we can just keep it an even 10 bucks for everyone (unless its Canadian $). I can send you $2 back if you have a PayPal account yourself.

Also got checks in the mail last week, one from PD and I think the other was from Holt. I forgot to write that one down.

We can definitely look at starting even later. It only took 8 days to complete. Perhaps we can start the draft each year on opening Thursday of March Madness, with keepers due on "Selection Sunday". That would give a 2 week window.

Waiver Priority will be reverse of the draft order.

I will publish the rosters and "start the season" Monday March 29th, about a week before the real season starts.

I can hardly contain my excitement awaiting Barilko's season preview. Can't wait to be picked to finish 5th like I am every year!

FYI for the new guys - Since 2005, its been some combination of myself, Da Bomb and Holt in 1st or 2nd. Holt has NEVER finished out of the top 3 in the history of the league. I have not either since the first season in 2005. Last year was Da Bomb's 1st season missing the podium, but he's had 3 tough 2nd places.

2009 - 1st GO, 2nd Holt
2008 - 1st Holt, 2nd Da Bomb
2007 - 1st Da Bomb, 2nd GO
2006 - 1st GO, 2nd Da Bomb
2005 - 1st Holt, 2nd Da Bomb
2004 - 1st Astade!, 2nd Holt

I'm shooting to be the first 3 time champion and cement my status of THE Great One.

I will definitely do a season preview once you enter all the teams into Yahoo and I can get a better look at things.

FYI for the new guys:

While GO's listing of the top 2 is definitely accurate, what those listings don't show is that my team has improved every year since I joined the league.

2006: 9th Place
2007: 7th Place
2008: 5th Place
2009: 3rd Place

I sense a very obvious pattern here and realize that 1st place is pretty much locked up for me this year.

I wish you all good luck as you fight for 2nd and 3rd.

Once a player’s game starts you are not able to waive them if they are in a starting roster position until 12:01 AM PT the next morning. Bench players can be waived, but if a player gets injured during a game and you want to waive them you will have to wait until the next day if you had them active.

I guess I misread. I wonder why they've programmed it to work this way? Players that are locked should be waivable and treated as next day transactions. I don't get it. I don't want a closer to go down and then be forced to drop a shortstop to get his replacement just because the games have already started. Unusable in my opinion.

With next day you can cut someone anytime you want to. If you like to make moves late at night, same day transactions is pretty bad, if I'm understanding it correctly.

Ryan Howard cannot hit lefties, and Guru's new site, Baseballdata.com showed Howard hitting about .167 with 9 Ks in 22 ABs against Lannon. It seemed lke a good move to bench him, so naturally he went 2/6 with 1 HR and 2 RBIs.

Absolutely it is selling high (Cruz is a very good player but he's streaky and he looks awfully good in a streak).

Also, it is a matter of some players underperforming right now (like his teammate Carlos Lee, Coghlin, Mags & Uggla).

"for years to come" -- I bet you'd be surprised to learn that Nelson Cruz is 30 years old. Only 2 months younger than Beckett. So its not like he is trading away Justin Upton or some young kid.

I'd say its pretty darn even. I think we can all agree last seasons full season rankings are a fair gauge. Beckett finished #73 and Cruz #85.

I think it is pretty clear which side is better but overall it isn't a terrible trade. Looking at ADPs, cruz was rated about a round ahead of beckett and based on this year so far (if you can put stop in a week...) that gap would have widened. This obviously isn't a wide margin but i feel Cruz is likely the better contributor, especially for a rebuilding team, where the risk associated with arms make bats the safer bet.

Also, you got a Red Sox from a clear homer. You have to overpay to pull that off. haha.

i can't believe people are making hay out of this trade.

Nelson Cruz is good. he's probably a Top 25 outfielder.

but he also hasn't really shown that much at the major league level. he has never played 130 games, and only has one season of playing over 100 games.

and if you look at his splits from last season, he had a GREAT first half, and a relatively lesser second half.

meanwhile, Beckett has 5 consecutive double-digit win season, four of which were 15 or more wins. He's good for 160+ K's, a WHIP under 1.20, and probably an ERA under 4.00.

I'm just not sure how anyone can be critical of this deal.

For the record I'm totally fine with the trade...

But if I were to try to explain any second-guessing in this league it usually happens when a coveted player all of a sudden gets traded. Usually when there is an announcement of interest to trade a 'keeper' and managers give it a good run only to find out that they were out-bid, it goes over better. just my 2 cents.

Pretty sure I said Cruz "wasn't as good as Andre Ethier" and not "Cruz sucks".

True, Beckett and Cruz are pretty close in current value. But Beckett is about at his peak value, and Cruz could really turn into a superstar. As long as we're talking about "selling high" then I think Beckett is the guy being sold high.

No matter. I don't either team is going to beat me no matter who they have.

I don't think beckett has the potential to be more than a marginal keeper (meaning to me RD 6-8 redraft) and that is not really a player who is helping your team. Cruz IMO, has the potential to be a 3-4 rounder if he continues to show what he has last year and half (IMO he will, but he obviously has risks related to whether he is real and that he isnt the youngest) Thats why I think it is clear which side i better, though it is a close enough deal that I could see situations where the beckett side makes sense for them. Not sure why I am really arguing however, as it clearly isn't close to a vetoable trade.

By the way, I'm pretty sure Jonathan Broxton is an elite closer, despite only one save so far this year. Honestly, he might be the best closer in baseball - good team, good park, solid grasp, lots of strikeouts AND he's only 25.

Hey, Tobi Stoner got called up and pitched tonight. I figure I'll need a different placeholder. I picked up Denny Stark, who is also quite unlikely to pitch this year, as a replacement replacement for Drew Storen, who I still claim rights to. Same initials, so I guess that's a start. Or a Stark.

Not that I knew it at the time, but Stoner is exactly the type of player a team like the Mets calls up the day after they play a 20 inning game.

When I saw him last night (by searching for "ST"), I figured Denny Stark would be the perfect placeholder since he hadn't pitched since 2004... until he appeared in 9 games for the Mariners last season. Maybe he's not so great after all. We'll see how it goes.

For the past week 6 of my hitters are under the proverbial Mendoza line and one is actually under .100. Manny Ramirez was my only one doing well, and today he joined Ellsbury,Rollins and Lee on the DL. It seems like it is going to be one of those seasons.

We could put it to a vote, but I don't think they can really do anything once the season has started. Should we vote anyhow?

Personally I have greatly preferred this because I've been able to add/drop guys into my lineups immediately 10 minutes before a guy is set to play dozens of times and haven't once yet tried to drop someone after their game started.

I think the whole point from their point of view is you can't drop a guy on the same day you are playing him.

#355: The way it works on Yahoo is that you cannot make a move even when the games involved are over. And they do not give you the option to make the move for the next day's roster.

I might be alone here, but I do most of my research in the evening. I follow a few of the games, and if a player comes up that I want to get I pick him up right then. I also make moves involving probable starters but (again) I'm not permitted to make the move because the player's team has already started that day's game--even though I don't want them for that day's game.

I work very late into the evening--sometimes after the West Coast games finish. And I would even find the whole thing acceptable if I was permitted to pick up players at the conclusion of the last day's game. But that is seemingly impossible too.

I like same day pickups when I can do them, but not at the cost of no evening pickups at all.

I actually had a DL situation - I was trying to move Blanton off my DL, since it wouldn't let me do anything with him in that slot. But since his game started, he was locked into that slot, and still wouldn't let me do anything even though tomorrow's roster had him out of it.

Fortunately, none of you suckers had picked up John Buck by the time I got in this morning.

I emailed to ask them if it was possible to switch (if we decided to). Also asked if there is a plan to remedy the situation. I was thinking, they can delay add/drops with waivers -- maybe they should be every player on a one day waiver overnight? But you can still add drop as you see fit.

AFAIK, you can't pickup players once their game has started on that day.

The problem is that Yahoo insists on applying same-day rules to all pickups. I'm not interested, after the games have started, in making changes to that day's roster. And there is no reason, in any case, to apply the same day rules to the day's games which have already ended.

Again--I may be the only one here who does this, but effectively blocking evening pickups for the following day is not something I'd be interested in continuing.

No but a guy on my bench who was in a 7 PM can be dropped, he's not frozen at all. So I can drop him and pick up whoever for a 10 PM game.

Maybe they could do something like "after the last game has started" then all everyone unlocks and add/drops go to the next day.

Not entirely, you can't. You can't pick up a guy whose team already played in a game that day, for example.

Yes, you can make some moves: You can move players whose team haven't played for another player whose team hasn't played. You can move bench guys for players whose team have yet to play. And both those types of moves will occur immediately.

Not altogether helpful when you are trying to make moves at 10pm, for example. Or at any time for the next day's games.

I don't want this to sound like a big hairy deal, especially since we are locked into this for the season. But I'm certainly not getting out of the change anything close to what I'm paying into it, IMO.

I have played alot of TSN games in the past and with this being the same system i like the way that it is set up.

We chose same day rosters so the logic makes sense that you can't pick up players once they have played or completed there game, as you would be picking them up for that day.

I don't know what time things unfreeze but I know that couple days ago I was able to pick Chacin up at 1040PM PST so it isnt incredibly late for west coast people.

I actually had this thought earlier this week reading my ESPN the Magazine... and seeing the great George Will say it I found it interesting.

Here was the ESPN player poll --

Question: What's the most overrated statistic in baseball?

The biggest loser: batting average (16 percent, just ahead of ERA, 13 percent). "Who cares if you get a bunch of singles and end up hitting .320?" says an AL outfielder who didn't approach .320 in 2009.

Most underrated stat was on-base percentage (14 percent), beating runs and WHIP (10 percent each). Says the singles-hitter hater: "OBP shows the true impact of a hitter."

Wins will always be a stupid stat as long as they keep handing them out the way they do. Starter throws 8 shutout innings and has two run lead, reliever comes in, gives up 3 runs in 1 inning, then team comes back to win 4-3. Stupid reliever who gave up 3 runs gets win. Great.

I've always heard that the scorer can use discretion when charging wins and losses but I've never seen it happen.

I went in to try and put the traded guys in the lineup but can't move anyone after games started. I can probably put a request in to get Nolasco added back to DPR's lineup and Tex/Smoak to Barilkos... thankfully nobody went absolutely crazy with like a 3 HR game or something.

wins, in MLB, may be overrated.

wins, in fantasy, are not. part of drafting is knowing that wins can be arbitrary, but also knowing that a pitcher who pitches for a contender is likely to get more wins than a pitcher who pitches for a doormat.

I saw a very interesting argument that Quality Starts were almost exactly like wins, but slightly better. There's a minimum inning limit, and you can still get one if you struggle a bit (the old 4.50 ERA situation). They're not perfect, but they're better than giving positive credit for losses.

Rollins finally returned only to go back on the DL after a few games, Sizemore went on the DL, and Ellsbury is about 1 for 14 with no SBs after coming off the DL. Disappointed I sat Bucholz last night. My pitching has been underwhelming so far but I think with the track record some of these guys have it should turn around.

My teams rise from last place has coincided with Bay's rebound so hopefully that keeps up. I am gonna have to move one of these Mets -- Bay or Ike -- when Beltran returns.

as for my quartely report card...my team got out to an ultra-fast start but my pitching has been awful as of late...I thank Longoria and Werth who have carried me, but I need to get more production out of the rest of the lineup...I think in due time water will find its level, but these guys have to start stepping up!

The word I've heard in listening to the Nats announcers is that Harper will be groomed for a few years and will be an OF, so it's highly unlikely he'll have any C eligibility and even more highly unlikely that he'll be in MLB in September (this year).

Other than that, I think the Heyward comparison is on target.

GO, I want to pick your brain and am interested in the reasoning behind the trade. I can see how you would do this trade for the future, with Josh Johnson as probably the best player involved, but I don't see it helping you this year, and you are definitely in contention for a top 3 place.

(Josh Johnson for Hughes, Rios, Aardsma).

Don't question GO. He is a supreme manager ;) P. Hughes will skip his next start (and according to Eiland, more down the stretch). Look at my stable of starting pitching... This is really Johnson for Rios + Aardsma. GO, got another stud pitcher and even if he doesn't place this year, he has a keeper to boot.

Btw, I noticed you are looking for a Closer...ready to trade Reyes?!

Hughes getting a few starts skipped isn't a big deal in Roto -- its hurting me in H2H -- but I don't see it as a big deal in Roto cause he's still got 100 good innings to throw this year or so.

People often ask why I make some of the deals I do. I'm not really sure, I just wanted Josh Johnson. So Astade told me which holes he needed filling - Steals and Saves... and then a good young SP to replace Josh if he was going to part with him. And I got it done. I will just have to find someone to replace Rios and Aarsdma now. I guess we'll see if I fall in the standings or not now.

Also I drafted Hughes, Rios late this year so I don't have a huge attachment to them. And we all know how I feel about closers.

I think Da Bomb is getting nervous because Astade received more immediate help and he's knocking at the door. :-) Its a fair deal though as GO received a top 5 SP keeper for years to come. Far better of a trade than a Denard Span for Neftali Feliz that I was offered. That was almost insulting. ;-)

I kept Jonathan Broxton for the last two years. Any complaints?

I also got an offer for Span, but he's only valuable if desperately need steals AND have a spot in the outfield with someone who is a one-dimensional power hitter.

Personally, I tend to overindex on Hughes and underindex on Johnson, but if you feel the way most people do about both of them, then this trade makes perfect sense.

There are only about 2-3 closers worth keeping year to year. One of them is Broxton. Congratulations on those awesome 50 IP he gives you each year. What about the other 1350 innings?

No wonder you are 12 points in saves and about 10 total points in the other 4 categories combined.

The positive value of broxtons era lqst year (qnd it was a fairly standard ERA for him) was worth more thqn the ERA of J Johnson, CC, verlander, lester jiminez and lee. Add in thqt closer qre likely more durable and he makes a fine keeper.

Closers are more durable? Thats far from the truth... per ESPN regarding keeping closers

if there's any aspect in which saves are even more unpredictable, it's forecasting consistency in the category over several seasons. To that point, if we establish 40 as a good benchmark in the category, only two closers (Francisco Rodriguez and Jose Valverde) have reached that plateau in two of the past three seasons. Two. No one has done it all three years.

Even if we adjust that benchmark down to 30, only six relievers (Francisco Cordero, Trevor Hoffman, Joe Nathan, Jonathan Papelbon, Mariano Rivera and Rodriguez) have done it in each of the past three seasons. That's a startling amount of inconsistency. You'll note, too, that both Hoffman and Rivera are beyond their 40th birthdays, so they're not even guaranteed to play each of the next three seasons.

Closers are just "less certain." There's a lot about them that can be predicted well. I knew Broxton was going to be at this level. I knew Brad Lidge could have a successful season in Philly.

But some are just confounding. Rafael Soriano until this year. Brian Fuentes. Ryan Franklin. Bobby Jenks. All those guys have success when they shouldn't and fail when they should.

Broxtons ERA was multiple more deviations from the mean(however we calculate those numbers) than Johnsons so even though Johnson gave 3x as many innings Broxton does more to keep an ERA down.

In terms of injuries I was just making a guess and don't have any data to make it up, but none of the data you state disputes it either. I just imagined that less innings would equal less injuries. While i know that turnover for closers is high how often are closers getting injured? I would think the odds of a top line closer getting injured over the course of the season would be lower than a starter.

Total innings matter more. You can have an ERA of 0.00 but if you throw 10 innings the effect on your team is marginal.

For a quick comparison using 2009 stats, I used Josh Johnson (ERA 3.23) and Bobby Jenks (3.71) vs. Broxton (2.61) and Beckett (3.86). Johnson and Jenks had a combined ERA of 3.33 while the other side was at 3.53.

When you pair broxton with a starter who has fairly significant negative ERA for a top starter it is not surprising that he can't make up for all of it.

lets say you are going for a 9 in ERA. That is 3.48 currently.

If you have 1324 at 3.5 and 76 at 2.61 you get 3.45

If you have 1191 at 3.5 and 209 at 3.23 you get 3.46

So Broxton is slightly better. He inproves your ERA my 25% more (bit of rounding in this data and with the two being pretty close it doesnt show the point the best).

Broxton ERA was more than 3 times more under your goal ERA than Johnsons and he pitched slighly more than 1/3 as many innings.

Absolutely, dpr.

Typically, relievers will actually have higher ERA's and WHIP's anyway. Last year, 14 of the top 30 closers (in terms of of saves) had ERA's over 3.00, which means nearly half of the closers weren't really helping much at all to lower your squad's team ERA.

WHIP is the same way. If you don't have a reliever with a WHIP under about 1.25 then he probably isn't helping you at all. Last year only 12 of the top 30 closers had a WHIP under 1.25.

That makes sense for these guys to carry these numbers, because it only takes a couple of really bad outings to screw with the numbers. And they don't get enough IPs to knock a bad outing or two down.

Also, the 40 save plataeu was hit by 4 closers last year. If we use the same criteria as a "good benchmark" for wins then we get 19 (weakly came to this number but for 2008 it was 6, which for wins=18, 2007 7 had 40 saves which is 18 wins).

So if you are choosing a criteria that only 17 got in the last year years, and 4 last year is it surprising that only 2 got in twice? FOr wins only 3 guys have done it 2 of the last 3 years, with none doing it all 3 (webb, CC, verlander). Also there were 22 instances of 18 wins occuring so it was a somewhat significantly more likely event.

The ESPN statement is pretty silly and I imagine if you did similar "analysis" for ERA or other stats you would get similar results.

ESPN didn't say starting pitchers were a reliable keepers, it just said that closers were not (outside of a couple) because of injury and the volatility of the position.

re 459 -- But the starters don't even matter that he picked. We can just use numbers with no specific pitcher attached. If you want better pitching stats across the board for a season, a good SP has more of an impact. Its simple math.

Good Starting Pitcher X = 3.50 ERA for 200 IP
Average Closer Pitcher Y = 3.00 ERA for 50 IP
your 250 IP gets you a 3.40 ERA

Average Starter Pitcher X = 4.00 ERA for 200 IP
Great Closer Pitcher y = 2.50 ERA for 50 IP
your 250 IP gets you a 3.70 ERA

And Wins and Saves are very different things, because you can't get Wins if your team doesn't score even if you pitch a 1 run gem... but closers are guaranteed 40+ opportunites of a definite scenario of being brought in to close a game and it is most certainly in their control.

By saying that something isn't reliable it is implying that the other things are more reliable. Starters (at least with regard to wins, are not). And you say outside of a couple, isnt that all that we are talking about when we mention keepers?

Also, I am not sure i would like to keep a closer just because a closer will likely never be more than an average keeper. Broxton and the other top tier closers (rivera, papelbon, (nathan)) seem a good bet to have ADP in the 5 and 6th round for the next few years but those arent the players that give you a winning keeper list. it is having maybe on of those players with mainly top 4 round guys that sets you up.

My point was about the ERA. Look at post 461. Broxton goes farther towards getting you to the ERA that you want than Johnson does.

With each of these guys on your team and doing what they did last year, you need the rest of your team to pitch around 3.55 to give your team the goal of 3.5. If your goal is higher, then Broxton helps more, lower, Johnson helps more.

So you are saying Broxton has a huge impact on ERA/WHIP, so we should see that reflected pretty easily... lets go to the standings!

Blue Hen has Broxton (1.87 and 1.10) + Valverde (0.53 and 0.68) + Nunez (2.27 and 0.98). So why is he DEAD LAST in WHIP and only 5 points in ERA? Because they have combined for 100 good innings. And his starters have (save for Matt Cain) pitched 400 below average innings.

GO has 10th Round closer talent.... but has good starters. And an 8 in ERA and a 9 and WHIP. Because I have only 100 average IP from my closers, but 400+ good IP from my starters.

Its simple math, the more good innings you have the better. Now that I have given away my entire pitching strategy. Great.

dpr, 461 - a closer's era has less impact than a starters era. Its very simple when done properly.

To do it properly, you have to use the same era for a comparison of the generic, 'closers vs starters.' Yes, there will be instances of specific closers having more beneficial impact than specific starters. But in general, you have to use the same era to compare the 2 types.

Dennys Reyez and Livan Hernandez are both sporting a 3.10 ERA. Reyes has it thru 20 Innings and Hernandez has it thru 98 innings. Without even doing the math, which do you think will have a great impact on your teams overall ERA?

If you want to use ERA to justify a specific closer over a specific pitcher, it can be done. But it cannot be done to counter the general sentiment from postings (in the 440-445 range) that closers do not make good keepers in this kind of a league.

Btw, how's my old team doing? I should have weathered the storm a bit longer. The drive to play is defintely still there. :)

Well if we are going to take one isolated instance (Blue Hen and his 3 total starters...) and draw from our conclusions from it, I have zero closers, why arent my ratios in first? Though I will give you that saves and ERA are positively related though I am not sure what that proves other than that there are alot of bad closer.

The point is for last year Broxton and Johnson had very similar positive effects on ERA.

468,

That is all pretty obvious. Obviously more innings is going to move the ERA farther from a point where it started, either higher or lower.

My point was a counter to GO statement that a closer does not pitch enough innings to help ERA. I stated how Broxton last year (who pitched a fairly average season for a keeper quality CL, which is the discussion) was able to more positively impact your team from an ERA perspective than many top flight starters. I used Johnson as my example as he was the closest to Broxton in ERA effect. Per my data there were only 14 starting pitches who had a more positive impact on ERA than Broxton. Of the top 12 in ERA effect 10 were starters because relievers dont pitch enough to beat guys who give sub 3 ERAs but once you get above that pitching an ERA around 2 beats an ERA around 3-3.5

I think BH is a pretty good example actually, cause he's throwing all these relievers to in theory have great ratios.... but just a couple starters that aren't going well are blowing the whole strategy out of the water because of the # of innings they throw.

Conversely, a few good starters and 1 below average closer you won't even notice a change in the numbers because his IP hardly put a dent in the good 600 IP you got from 3 good starters.

As you noted in a higher post, closer ERAs are better in general than starter ERAs. But you are right - the reason I have 5 closers is because I try to only have quality SP so they can't ruin my ratios, and then load up on RP. I thought I was good with Hamels and Cain. Oh well.

BH's problem seems to be that he didnt get middle tier starters, or the ones that he did, did awful. 1/3 of his innings are good from relievers, 1/3 are good from solid starters in cain and hamels, but then he didnt draft people to fill his last third so those have an era near 5.5

really though, my point is beside the argument that a closer isn't a good keeper. it is that a closer can give as good help to your ERA as a starter. I have given many stats to this effect IMO. 75 innings at 2.5 helps as much as 200 at 3.2 if you are doing well.

dpr in 473 - you are cherry picking stats to prove your point. I can cherry pick stats to disprove your point.

Aside from cherry picking stats, here is one thing you are missing (assuming hitting IP cap):
In your example, you have 125 innings unaccounted for. What are the other pitchers doing with your innings?

Is it better to have 75 innings at 2.5 and 125 innings at god-knows-what? or is it better to just have 200 innings at 3.2?

I don't know about in DD, but in RiBC South a 3.2 would be worth 16 points. So its well above average/norm. the chances of you filling in those other 125 innings with a quality pitcher who can keep you at 3.2 is pretty low. I'll take the 200 innings at a 3.2 era any day.

I am not sure what stats I cherry picked. Broxton was the initial discussion closer and I made the statement of several starters that his ERA had a more positive effect than in 449, the most borderline of them being Johnson, who is the SP stats I used. What was cherry picked? The stats I am using are the exact stats that would be used to compare the ERA effect of Johnson and Broxton for 2009.

And then in terms of which is better. I took 3.5 as a reasonable goal to try to achieve. This would give 9 points in the category this year which I think is the rule of thumb for what you should shoot for. Given this, the two pitchers help pretty much the same amount to get to your goal ERA.

I can tell you that it's a good idea to not punt saves, and bad closers are painful. I have Carpenter, Lincecum, Romero, and Kershaw. You might think I'd have nice ratios but Dotel, Bell, Jenks, and Gregg are killing me. My 1.35 whip is only ahead of BH's!

I may just be having bad luck so far though. I usually am among the leaders in saves, but this is the first time I've had such terrible closers.
When I see Dotel entering a game in a non-save situation I want to go out on the front porch and puke.

One last thing. Who cares if someone has a different strategy from yours? If an opponent is being an idiot, then that's a good thing, isn't it?

My point was a counter to GO statement that a closer does not pitch enough innings to help ERA

To prove this point you choose to focus on 1 specific starter and 1 specific closer (it doesn't matter that somebody else brought them into the conversation, you choose to focus on them to prove this point). That is cherry picking. These 2 happen to prove your point so you continue to use their stats to support your position.

At the same time, your position suddenly slides from "My point was a counter to GO statement that a closer does not pitch enough innings to help ERA" to a comparison of, " the ERA effect of Johnson and Broxton for 2009."

If you want to make the point that specifically Broxton had a more positive impact than Johnson in 2009 then do it. I don't think anybody would argue with that. But that one incident does not prove the other point that a closer has enough IP to have an impact on team ERA (compared to a starter).

And holt, its not that I care that somebody has a different strategy. I'm not even in this league to compare with dpr. :) But I enjoy a good debate and also may get a new appreciation for closers by immersing myself in the debate. We all can learn something from it. I was surprised at the impact broxton could have on overall ERA, tbh. I double checked the math 3 times. Would I keep a closer based on that? Nahh. Money is still against any given pick having that kind of an impact.

Well if I am going to be doing math to prove the point I need to use numbers (and you seem to think this part of the argument was telling so doing so made sense..). So how am I supposed to get numbers? I chose Broxton because he was mentioned by BH. Discussing elite closers and a 2.5 ERA isn't cherry picked. If I chose Rivera and 1.5 sure. But 2.5 is repeatable and a reasonable (conservative?) expectation for an elite closer. From there since we are comparing closers to starters obviously I need to compare to starters. I have conceeded that closers do not pitch enough innings to match the top SPs but they do pitch enough to compete with the second tier, of which I named several pitchers and then did the math with the best of this group (thereby implying that for the rest of the group broxton would fair even better). It wasnt broxton versus johnson, but broxton vs Johnson and all pitchers worse (all but 10-15 SPs)

I am not sure how my position slide. I was trying to show how a CL can compete with a starter in ERA effect (to counter GO point). To do this I used an fairly average ERA for a tier one closer and show how it competes with a good (though not elite ERA. I gave names here as I think it gives meaning to the argument instead of just hypothetical CL A with 2.5 ERA over 75 innings vs SP A with 3.2 over 200.

If I prove that Broxton in an average year certainly repeatable many times over has a bigger effect than the pitcher with the 18th best ERA on the year than arent I proving that a closer can have a significant impact? Or can only the 17 players above johnson have a significant impact?

Before we go further, address the other 125 innings pitched you aren't accounting for.

This is the one big area you are missing.

As for where you get the data, start at 1400 IP since that is the league cap.

Figure out what ERA you are looking for. We'll use your goal of a 3.50 ERA.

Take the average number of innings pitched for a closer and the average number of innings pitched for a SP and take the average ERA for a closer and the average ERA for a SP.

Crunch the numbers. Thats where you get the numbers from for 'does a closer have enough innings to have a significant impact on team era compared to a closer.'

I think there is probably even justification for using means over averages.

If you want to keep using specific players to prove your point I can use specific players to disprove your point. What about Brad Lidge? Nobody saw his 7.71 ERA coming. He would have had a big negative impact.

What about Brian Fuentes, the MLB leader in saves in 2009 with a 3.93 ERA. If you have a 3.50 ERA thru 1345 IP and then add in Fuentes 55 IP and 3.93 era (24 runs) you actually end up with a 3.51 era. Not a significant difference.

Rafael Soriano at 75.2 IP ends you up with a 3.47 ERA. Not a significant impact.

In general, closers do not have enough innings to have a significant impact on a teams ERA in a league with 1400 IP. Yes, there may be exceptions to the rule. But those exceptions do not justify the general rule of thumb being ignored.

Right, but do the same calculation for Ryan Dempster, Jered Weaver, Matt Garza, Chad Billingsley, John Danks, Wandy Rodriguez, or Edwin Jackson. Those guys are unlikely to be found on the waiver wire - how much does it help drafting one of them over the bottom tier closer (let's say Dotel, Lindstrom, Francisco last year, Qualls last year, etc). And that's to say nothing of what happens when you start reaching to the Vicente Padillas and Vin Mazzaros of the world.

Don't forget, before the season starts you only have probabilities to work with. What I'm trying to say is, before anyone starts using Josh Johnson's stats from this year, keep in mind that the stats are way better than all of the preseason projections. When you are putting your keeper list together, you don't have the luxury of seeing into the future. There are very few sure things in baseball. I thought Joe Nathan was one of the few sure things, so he's been a keeper for me for years. In previous years it was a good decision. This year, it was very bad. Still, I believe that top tier closers are worthy of keeping, depending on your roster. My adventure with sub-par closers will probably cause me to go after the top closers a lot harder next season.

Back to work...

Note -I think we were using Johnsons numbers from last year when he had a 3.23 and 1.16 which left him as the #12 ranked SP.

This year he had a hot start giving him a 1.83 and 0.96 at the moment, but certainly I expect he'll wind up around the same as previous.

I can say its been nice having Soria/Franklin this year cause I haven't really chased saves much like I do each year when I find them for free. But I sacrificed hitting when I picked those guys.

485-

To disprove does not all you have to prove is an instance of does. I proved (I believe this part has been accepted, at least by you) that Broxton has a bigger effect than the pitcher with the 18th best ERA.

To go past that as that aspect does admittedly make for a weak argument. I thought we were talking about keeper quality closers. The closers who were kept in this league posted ERAs of 2.61, 2.1, 1.76, and 1.85 in 2009. I was using the worst of these which is why I didnt feel my stat was cherry picked. Now if the worst (from an ERA perspective) has an impact of all but the top 20 starters that means that top tier closers have ERA effects of Tier2 starter. That I would consider a significant impact.

If we expand the argument to more than the top tier. To start with, you used Soriano and describe is impact of lower ERA by .03 as not significant. But remember that Johnson who had the 18th best ERA only lowered it .04 so .03 really is quite good and like puts him on par with at least a Tier3 starter. Now Lidge, he certainly had a significant impact, just not the kind your team wants. I would say without crunching the numbers that for a team goal of 3.5 a closer needs to have an ERA under 3 to have an imapct (or over 4 for the inverse). Of the top 30 closers, 11+ saves, 19 had ERAs under 3, who likely made impacts of around SP3s. Of closers with more than 25 saves (as guys with 15 saves aren't really closers...) 14/21 made significant positive impacts.

I think it is fair to say that closers to make a significant impact which while not on par with the top tier, compete with the rest.

Its still all about volume of innings pitched.

And BH has THREE closers with absolutely dominant numbers... yet he is last in WHIP and bad in ERA. And he has Cain and Hamels who are good. Shouldn't those closers be offsetting the 1-2 crappy guys he's started beyond those two? Well they aren't getting it done. Because the three of them combined still can't counteract Matusz etc. The proof is in the standings. The closers don't pitch enough volume of innings to offset average pitchers #'s.

Porcello - 70 innings, 1.70
Blanton - 18 innings, 1.42
Harden - 60 innings, 1.70
Joba - 30 innings, 1.43
Lindstrom - 30 innings, 1.58

I am not going to track all of BHs transactions within his lineup which makes this somewhat crude analysis but here goes.

Here is the starters on BHs roster for more than 30 days:
Cain 107.2 2.93
Hamels 90.1 4.08
Porcello 70 6.14
Harden 65 5.68
Blanton 68.1 6.19

Only Blanton has he dropped and that was a week ago so he had these guys the majority of the season. So assuming he was starting all of these guys, which is a big assumption and maybe BH can shed some light they give 401.3 innings with an ERA of 4.07. Yet his ERA is 3.86 so the closers did have a noticable effect, in this case moving him down .2. His RP ERA btw using the guys in his lineup which i assume has remained relatively constant is 2.74 (so solid obviously but nothing ridiculously good) over 194 innings.

That is obviously only 600 innings and he has pitched 800 so nothing is close to exact but with the remainder of his innings being pitched by spot starters like matusz millwood myers, beuhrle, gonzalez and wells I would only guess that they are hurting his starters portion of the ERA and improving the effect of relievers.

Without doing the math I can tell you that it is Lester. I have said numerous times that a CL cannot compete with the top tier which a 2.8 ERA is.

Also, when you are dealing with the higher numbers, like BHs ERA is then the analysis shifts to favoring starters, whereas if we shifted to a team with a 3.2 ERA it would shift to the closers.

Without getting into it too much, with the goal of 3.5 I have been using

BTW that analysis that you are calling for is the exact analysis that have done in this thread for a hypothetical team with a 3.5 ERA. It shows that for that team a 2.5ish from a reliever is very equivalent to a 3.2ish from a starter. This means that top tier (and I dont know how many are at 2.5 but say 1/4?) reliever has equal effect of the 20th starter. Thats an SP2.

But the question is how do you get to that magical 3.5 in the first place.

Well 3.4 is very different than 2.8. If we took the stats of both from last year than the answer would be broxton would have the bigger effect (very close though) for BH.

Generally speaking releivers throw 1/3 of the innings of starters so they need to be 3 times farther away from the rest of team ERA to have the same effect.

You don't want to compare a top tier closer to a top tier start to prove your point?

Look at it this way to figure out if a closer has more or less of an impact than a starter:

Take a team with an era of 4.00. They want to lower it and can choose between a SP who is projected to have an ERA of 3.00 or a RP who is projected to have a an ERA of 3.00

Wins, k's and Saves are not a consideration.

You have 1 slot you can fill. Who do you take?

That is obviously the starter but arent we past that point?

I have shown in this thread that top tier closers have a similar ERA effect to tier2 starters. Middle CL have the effect of tier3 starters.

Closers do not pitch enough innings to have the biggest impact of anyone in the game. But they do pitch enough to have a noticable impact. Around that of a tier2. That is a significant impact.

And no I do not have to compare top tier to top tier to prove my point. My point is that a closer, and certainly a keeper level closer, pitches enough innings to make a significant impact on ERA. Unless we define significant as something that only the top 10-15 pitchers reach I have clearly demonstrated this. 491 is a more written out post to that effect.

I know we live in a fantasy stats offensive universe - but isn't Yadier more about his amazing defense? ESPN article I remember from a while back... all the other catchers say he is the best.

also, once a player gets into the ASG they tend to keep getting voted in. Victor Martinez, for example, kept getting voted in despite years of stats which were comparatively weak. And VMart has never has the defensive skills Yadi has.

Molina is tops among all active catchers at throwing out runners. He's a multi-year gold glover. And, according to several sources, he calls a great game.

Since the Home Run Derby seems to have assumed a larger and larger share of the attention for the All Star Game, hitting stats seem to have become more meaningful. But Yadi is a bit of a throwback to when other skills mattered.

Yeah Yadi is definitely very valuable to his team even if he hits .220. He must be one of the greatest defensive catchers the game has ever seen.

If is whole package is so good though wouldnt he be getting paid more? It is hard to quantify defense so in this sense I will trust the GMs to best evaluate the whole package. If he is paid like a average C (2 years ago 4 years 16M) when he is supposed to be a .275ish hitter he becomes an allstar when hitting .230? Seems a stretch. Also his UZR rating is lower this year than it has been in past years so his defense isnt even as valuable. If he signed a rookie contract or something to do with service time than I take it back but he had 3.5 seasons when he signed the contract.

He signed a 4 year contract in 2008. Since then, he's been selected to 3 ASGs. I suspect his next contract will get him a pretty big raise.

His BA for his career is .265 which, given his defensive skills, is pretty good. But even if he continues to hit as he has, he'll still set career highs in RBIs and will come close with dingers. This, coming from a guy not known for his bat.

I think, however, he'll start hitting closer to his career average pretty soon.

The last 2 years when he was selected to the All star games he hit over .300 (end of the year I didnt look for splits). That is very different than .230. But molina isnt the worst all star and olivo isnt the worst snub.

Sorry for the silence from Canada guys, was away.

Infante is the worst all-star ever. There may have been some guys that were worse, but at least they were chosen to fill a team quota. Atlanta already had no need to fill a quota here. Terrible choice.

That being said, I am looking to move Saves for help at other positions.

Maybe Selig did, but Manuel isn't the kind of guy to allow such a buttinski move, IMO. Obviously having a multi-position player is smart now that the games "count" but I find it hard to believe that Selig would get involved at that level.

Josh Johnson and Hughes were producing pretty similarly at the time of the trade but they have definitely gone in two different directions since then. Sometimes thems the breaks.

Similarly, I very reluctantly traded my SS Zobrist in my RIBC league about a month ago because my replacement was Starlin Castro and he had an OPS of about .700. Since then, Castro has gone on a tear and Zobrist is the one who has struggled.

Performance since the trade:

Josh Johnson- 4ER in 34IP

Johan Santana- 8ER in 44IP (previously offered)

Phil Hughes- 18ER in 23.2IP

Aardsma has one save during that time, so I would have been alot better not making that trade or atleast getting Johan in return. Oh well.

Hellickson is on the list because this is a keeper league. He is TBs top pitching prospect, and his 1st 3 starts have shown his potential. I drafted and am keeping Alvarez for the same reason, based on what he should do in the hopefully near future. Of my players I think that Beltran, Hellickson and Sizemore are worth a 1st round draft pick since that is actually the 8th round. Volquez, Dempster, Niese and Ibanez are also worth high draft picks. Now for those who disagree, please remember that this is my 2nd season in the 1st keeper league that I have played in.

It is just that sure they may be good keepers but can you can't keep them so they are no good to you. Might as well try to get value for the 2 you rate lowest before you just put them in the draft for no return.

That said: I am looking to move Quentin, GFloyd and Liriano. They are players that can pretty much help any team I would think.

Also for teams more looking to the future I have too many young outfielders. Stanton, McCutcheon, Heyward, and Brown can't all be kept but have varying degrees of keeperness. Let me know if you would be interested.

The way I look at it, if I cannot get a 1st for some or a 2nd for the others, I am better throwing them back in and probably getting one or more of them back in the 2011 draft. They will be there along with others who I might like better. That is my analysis, albeit the analysis of someone without much keeper league experience.

I respect your hustle regarding Hellickson and as a Rays fan I think he is going to be great, but you'd be wise to shop him to a team in need now who needs to get a solid pitcher (& possible keeper, depending how you look at it) for the remainder of the season.

Starlin Castro, Ian Desmond, Aaron Hill, and Pablo Sandoval for those that need to fill an IF hole.

600! posts, nice. and the Poli league thinks they talk a lot or something. and they have more teams to help their cause.

Does anyone see any 2011 draft pick trades? I am gonna try and go through and find any. If so I want to group them all together before we head into the offseason.

Thanks guys. I was gunning for holt's record of 110 points at the end, but came up just short. Congrats to holt and GO for placing in 2nd and 3rd. As for the rest of you, please step your game up ;).

And I know I speak from a biased standpoint, but how do people feel of maybe increasing dues to $20 or so for next year?

I would have no problem going to 20, its kind of a pain to go all through the collection for only 10 each. 20 bucks for 6 months of action is pretty reasonable and painless I think. We would also deepen the payouts down to maybe 4th or 5th place at least getting 10 bucks back.

I've got no problem bumping it up to $20.

After what I thought was a very good draft, I was disappointed not be finally move up at the end, despite several mini-surges. I do have a demonstratively better team than at the beginning of the year, particularly at pitching, so it'll be a tough thing to choose keepers next year.

Congrats to Da Bomb on your 1st place finish.

My season was over early with season ending injuries to Ellsbury and Sizemore (No comments. I still think if healthy, he is a top player.) and prolonged injuries to Rollins and Utley, but I cannot blame my 9th place finish on that alone. My pitching was terrible, and I did little to improve it or to improve my hitting with free agents during the season.

I have a good set of keepers for 2011, and if they stay healthy, a decent draft will make my team very competitive. I am particularly happy with Pedro Alvarez whom I think will be a top 5 player within a year or two.

I am looking forward to 2011, and $20 is fine with me.

I have no problem upping the amount to $20 next year. It's all good with me.

Looking to make a deal. Six of my keepers are set - Upton, Pujols, Dunn, Crawford, Weeks, Youkilis.

That leaves Hamels, Andrus, Cain, Wandy, Valverde, Broxton, Joba, and Harden. I will trade all eight of those guys for one better keeper. Or individually for picks. Make it happen.

I will be back for next year.

In terms of a fee increase, I am selfishly opposed as my team isnt ready to compete but I will abstain from the vote and be fine with whatever.

For keepers, I am always looking to make moves.

Top Tier
Teix
Heyward
McCutheon
Stanton
Kinsler

Extra that I think could make good keepers for some teams, especially one looking to take a risk on a top prospect.
Reynolds
Strasburg
Santana
Liriano
Bruce
Wieters
D. Brown
Jennings
Nathan (has always been a keeper when healthy)

Anyone is available although if I move the top guys I would be looking to consolidate not expand. Also the guys from the bottom list who are most likely to be among my keepers (likely Santana and Liriano, although Stras particularly is hard to let go) will be harder to part with.

Lots of dead wood here to trim. A strange team--lots of W's at the expense of very poor WHIP & ERA. The team looks like it could hit a ton of home runs but it just didn't, and they couldn't steal a base if they had a "Friend of Al Capone" card.

No one is untouchable. Obviously some are better than others, but make a solid offer and let me know what you are looking for. Time to rebuild from the bottom up.

As much as I enjoy this league, my time is severely limited due to a move in a new home, wedding plans, etc.

I wouldn't be a quality manager considering my duties to other leagues and would essentially be "dead weight" this year.

I prefer yahoo for a couple reasons.

1. Yahoo ranks players based on in season performance which comes in handy when sorting through FAs.

2. Last time I used espn I remember that you could basically hoard players on the DL. In yahoo if you had placed a player on the DL you were unable to make transactions once he became healthy again.

i have about zero desire to leave Yahoo, because it's much easier to check one site for all my teams.

in fact (and no, this isn't a threat, just a statement of fact), it would be a deal breaker for me and i would likely leave the league.

Oh yeah, Khahan missed this last year!

Yes, Yahoo does have same day transactions now for all sports. However in basketball/baseball it freezes a player once his individual game starts (unless he is on your bench) and that player is not add/dropable til the next day.

So for those make their moves during the day, its great... cause you add a guy and can stick him right in your lineup. Or if you see your player is out, you can immediately pick up his backup etc and not miss out on a game.

However for those who primarily adjust lineups in the evenings, it can be difficult to adjust their roster cause many times guys are already locked. This is more of an issue in baseball cause most teams play everyday. Basketball a bit easier cause you only lock in for 3-4 games a week.

One more factor to consider is that if your starter breaks his leg in a game, you can't run to the computer and pick up his backup. So on the one hand your hands are tied, on the other it takes some of the advantage away of sitting at your computer watching all the games (as many experience in NFL with running to pick up the hot RB vs. leagues where everyone is locked at 1 PM on Sunday).

ESPN - does have same day transactions without freezing people, so thats its main difference in this area as BH will surely tell us.

I had some nibbles earlier about Yovani Gallardo who I've had every intention of keeping, but with the acquisition of Jimenez, Gallardo has become slightly more available.

A first rounder might just do it. Or a high draft pick and a very good bat. Lemme know.

I am assuming that we are going to start the draft following keeper entry with no clock for the first day, same as last year.

I am flying cross country on the 1st so will have great difficulty making my pick that day. With me having the second pick that means that i will likely be holding the draft up for awhile. If that poses a problem let me know and we can try to work out a solution. Otherwise don't expect me to pick until the evening.

I would prefer to begin a few days later in order to have some time to evaluate the remaining players.

Yeah, its gonna take me a couple days to get everything entered as it is. Finding free time in the middle of moving can be tough. I expect we will start more like Thursday and leave it with no clock through the weekend.

I am traveling through the weekend so would be in favor of waiting a bit too. Next Monday be nice as still like the idea of getting it over early though. If the new drafttime is like the mfl site we used for RIFC, things should flow faster than normal too.

Yeah, like I said somewhere... we'll get it set up this week, get everyone signed up and keepers entered. That'll take a couple days I'm sure. Then start things up maybe Friday, no clock, no pressure... everyone can work on playing around in the new draftime, setting up ques etc. Then Monday we can turn the clock on.

Gonna keep an eye on how quick this goes. Thinking for next year we may be able to push the keeper deadling all the way out to like Ides of March, or St. Patricks Day or whenever the first game of March Madness is... cause I think on this new Draftime thing we can do the draft in 7-10 days at most.

PD posted late. can I help pick his keepers?! ;)

on a serious note, this deadline (excusing serious circumstances) needs to be enforced. If we are to have a good picture of keepers before the draft we need to see who has been kept. I've been late in the past... so I'm not trying to be a hypocrite, we need to settle on a 'real' punishment
